OUR TEEN MASS THIS SUNDAY

—FEBRUARY 9

Our next Teen Mass will be held in the Upper Church THIS Sunday, February 9 at 6:00 pm. All are welcome to come share in the Eucharist, ministered by our teens.

FIFTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME ~ FEBRUARY 9, 2020

FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK

It may seem strange to regard the 16th century as “the modern age,” but at least the

application of the term to the time when the Protestant churches separated from Catholic unity reminds us of how long the Church has existed. Soon after Martin Luther’s break, various Christian theologians and denominations came to interpret the Lord’s words over the bread and wine of the Last Supper as meaning anything from a true reality—but one confined to the time of the actual celebration of the Eucharist, to a spiritual presence of some kind, to total symbolism. To give an idea of the numerous competing explanations that arose, a book published in Ingolstadt in 1577 was entitled Two Hundred Interpretations of the Words “This is My Body.” The Church had to clearly state what its teaching on the issue was, and, at the Council of Trent’s sessions of 1551 and 1562, invoked the term “transubstantiation,” which Lateran Council IV (1215) had used to describe the Mass’s transformation of bread and wine into the true body and blood of Christ. Fr. John Hardon ably defined transubstantiation as

The complete change of the substance of bread and wine into the substance of Christ’s body and blood by a validly ordained priest during the consecration at Mass, so that only the accidents of bread and wine remain.

(An “accident” is what is not of the essence of something, that is, its merely external features, such as appearances and other outward properties.) Transubstantiation has remained the enduring and preferred term to describe the Eucharistic change from Trent’s time until now. But modern theologians, in attempts to understand it more deeply, began to explore implications of the Eucharist’s sign value and change in meaning by using terms such as “transignification” and “transfinalization.” This led Pope St. Paul VI to issue his 1965 encyclical Mysterium Fidei (The Mystery of Faith), which mentioned eight ways in which Jesus is truly present to us. He acknowledged the validity of the recently enhanced explanations but reminded us that the traditional understanding of the Real Presence retains its foremost status. One of my own favorite remarks about the Real Presence of Christ in the Eucharist is by the contemporary theologian Roch Kereszty, who says of Jesus that “He gives nothing else and nothing less than himself; the Eucharist is his full and direct self-communication.” It is something we should never

(continued above)

forget, and the main reason why the Mass is the irreplaceable and necessary encounter with the Lord. I also relish recalling an incident from the life of Flannery O’Connor, one of America’s greatest modern authors of fiction, who died in 1964 at the age of 39 from lupus, which then could not be successfully controlled. (Her stories abound in Christian meaning, and her letters are among the most valuable—and most entertaining—spiritual writings of our time.) Before her days of fame, she had a memorable exchange with the author Mary McCarthy:

I was once, five or six years ago, taken by some friends to have dinner with Mary McCarthy and her husband, Mr. Broadwater. … She departed the Church at the age of 15 and is a Big Intellectual. We went at eight and at one, I hadn’t opened my mouth once, there being nothing for me in such company to say. … Having me there was like having a dog present who had been trained to say a few words but overcome with inadequacy had forgotten them. Well, toward morning the conversation turned on the Eucharist, which I, being the Catholic, was obviously supposed to defend. Mrs. Broadwater said when she was a child and received the Host, she thought of it as the Holy Ghost, he being the “most portable” person of the trinity; now she thought of it as a symbol and implied that it was a pretty good one. I then said, in a very shaky voice, “Well, if it’s a symbol, to hell with it.” That was all the defense I was capable of but I realize now that this is all I will ever be able to say about it, outside of a story, except that it is the center of existence for me; all the rest of life is expendable.

To that: Amen!

Msgr. David Hubba
