SAINT JOSEPH CHURCH ORADELL/NEW MILFORD, NJ

We are truly happy to have you with us at Saint Joseph Church today to help us celebrate the beautiful miracle that is the birth of Our Savior, Jesus Christ. If you are a visitor to Saint Joseph,

we hope you will take the time to look through this bulletin and see all the wonderful ministries, prayer experiences and Christian service opportunities Saint Joseph has to offer. You can also check us out on our website, sjcnj.org, and on our parish Facebook page (facebook.com/church.st.joseph) If you are one of our parishioners, please know how glad we are to have you with us today. You are a large part of the reason our parish is so blessed. I hope you will enjoy the many Christmas poems and reflections that I have included in this bulletin. They are ones that I have found especially moving and uplifting at this special time of the year...and I hope you will too. May I take this opportunity on behalf of the entire staff of Saint Joseph Parish to wish you and your family a wonderful Christmas and a blessed New Year.

Msgr. David Hubba

The House of Christmas

There fared a mother driven forth Out of an inn to roam; In the place where she was homeless All men are at home. The crazy stable close at hand, With shaking timber and shifting sand, Grew a stronger thing to abide and stand Than the square stones of Rome.

For men are homesick in their homes, And strangers under the sun, And they lay on their heads in a foreign land Whenever the day is done. Here we have battle and blazing eyes, And chance and honour and high surprise, But our homes are under miraculous skies Where the yule tale was begun.

A Child in a foul stable, Where the beasts feed and foam; Only where He was homeless Are you and I at home; We have hands that fashion and heads that know, But our hearts we lost - how long ago! In a place no chart nor ship can show Under the sky's dome.

This world is wild as an old wives' tale, And strange the plain things are, The earth is enough and the air is enough For our wonder and our war; But our rest is as far as the fire-drake swings And our peace is put in impossible things Where clashed and thundered unthinkable wings Round an incredible star.

To an open house in the evening Home shall men come, To an older place than Eden And a taller town than Rome. To the end of the way of the wandering star, To the things that cannot be and that are, To the place where God was homeless And all men are at home.

(From The Collected Poems of G.K.Chesterton; Dodd, Mead & Co., Inc.)

NATIVITY OF THE LORD ~ DECEMBER 25, 2019

The Prince of Peace

Can the stars return once more And light the skies so dark above? Can the song of angels ring To fill the world once more with love?

Can the Mother offer Him To all who walk this troubled earth: Reawaken in our hearts The wonder of His Promised birth?

Can our hatreds flee our hearts, Can the warring nations cease, Perish the evil thoughts once more And recognize the Prince of Peace?

Can our wisdom seek once more The source from which all wisdom flows To find the Child and Mother there To end our sorrows and our woes.

—Msgr. William Noe Field

The Christmas season doesn’t officially end until the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord on January 12. Come join us for our extremely popular “An Afternoon of Christmas Joy” on that very day!

The members of our parish music ministry—our professionally trained leaders of song, amazing adult and children’s choirs and gifted parish musicians (under the direction of Monroe Quinn)—will be showcasing their talents when they perform selections from a variety of styles of Christmas music. Be sure to keep Sunday, January 12 at 3:00pm open (and invite your family and friends too!) so that you can come and enjoy some wonderful music in our church. We’ll help you bring the bright spirit of Christmas right into the dark days of winter!

The Saint Joseph Care Corner (SJCC) is committed to helping people have access to personal hygiene and household products.

We focus on items not easily obtained through food pantries or food stamps. The SJCC is located in the basement of the Retreat House with the entrance on the Grand Street side. Items currently needed are laundry detergent, dish detergent, paper towels, shampoo, conditioner, shower gel and feminine hygiene products. Donations can be dropped off anytime and placed in the storage container near the top of the stairs (Grand Street). Any questions, contact Peg Kohli at 201-391-0224 or at [email protected]

ROSARY FOR VOCATIONS The Legion of Mary in conjunction with Saint Joseph’s Vocations Ministry invites your to join us as we pray the Rosary for vocations on the second Thursday of each month in Mary’s Chapel after the 8:30 am Mass. Each month we will pray for a different vocation.

THE BURNING BABE BY ROBERT SOUTHWELL SJ

As I in hoary winter’s night stood shivering in the snow, Surpris’d I was with sudden heat which made my heart to glow; And lifting up a fearful eye to view what fire was near, A pretty Babe all burning bright did in the air appear; Who, scorched with excessive heat, such floods of tears did shed As though his floods should quench his flames which with his tears were fed. “Alas!” quoth he, “but newly born, in fiery heats I fry, Yet none approach to warm their hearts or feel my fire but I! My faultless breast the furnace is, the fuel wounding thorns, Love is the fire, and sighs the smoke, the ashes shame and scorns; The fuel Justice layeth on, and Mercy blows the coals, The metal in this furnace wrought are men’s defiled souls, For which, as now on fire I am to work them to their good, So will I melt into a bath to wash them in my blood.” With this he vanish’d out of sight and swiftly shrunk away, And straight I called unto mind that it was Christmas day. DISCOVER THE SECRETS AND HIDDEN GEMS

OF SAINT JOSEPH CHURCH —JANUARY 22

Join Fr. Anthony Di Stefano on Wednesday, Januaary 22, 2020 at 7:30 pm for a very special tour of our beauti-ful church. Explore areas you don’t typically see and learn the history of this building that we call our spiritual home. Did you know that there is a hidden stained glass win-dow? Or that we had a small wooden church on this spot before the church we know and love was built? Don’t miss what promises to be a truly fascinating experience!

Parishioners of both Saint Joseph Church and Saint Catharine Church in Glen Rock had a wonderful time together on their Pilgrimage to Italy in November led by Fr. Anthony Di Stefano of Saint Joseph (4th from right) and Fr. Bogumil Misiuk (far right) of Saint Catharine. The photo was taken at the North American College overlooking the Vatican.

NATIVITY OF THE LORD ~ DECEMBER 25, 2019

STEWARDSHIP REFLECTION “Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth to those whom he favors.” And we are among the favored ones. He has showered us with blessings too many to count - and now at Christmas time, we remember the glorious gift of his Son. In how many ways can we offer thanks and gratitude for this awesome gift?

“CHRISTMAS SHOWS US THE TIES THAT BIND”

Christmas reminds us we are not alone. We are not unrelated atoms, jouncing and ricocheting amid aliens, but are a part of something, which holds and sustains us. As we struggle with shopping lists and invitations, compounded by December's bad weather, it is good to be reminded that there are people in our lives who are worth this aggravation, and people to whom we are worth the same. Christmas shows us the ties that bind us together, threads of love and caring, woven in the simplest and strongest way within the family.
