SAINT JOSEPH CHURCH ORADELL/NEW MILFORD, NJ

RITE OF CHRISTIAN INITIATION OF ADULTS (R.C.I.A)

PERIOD OF PURIFICATION AND ENLIGHTENMENT

We congratulate our RCIA Elect and Candidates who last weekend were presented to our Archbishop, Joseph William Cardinal Tobin, at the Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred Heart, in Newark, celebrating the Rite of Election and the Rite of Continuing Conversion. During the Rite of Election, the Catechumen now called “the Elect” – those awaiting baptism and full initiation into the Catholic Church, affirmed their intention to join the Church and, in the presence of Cardinal Tobin, they inscribed their names in the Book of Elect at the cathedral as a pledge of fidelity. Those who have already been baptized, the Candidates, were also recognized for their desire to be fully initiated into our Catholic Faith during the Easter Season. They now begin a Period of Purification and Enlightenment – the final preparation for the reception of the Sacraments of Initiation. Over the course of the five weeks of Lent, three Scrutinies (rites for self-searching and repentance) and the presentations of the Creed and the Lord’s Prayer take place. This period concludes with the celebration of the Sacraments of Initiation at the Easter Vigil. Please continue to pray for them as they journey with us through Lent.

SECOND SUNDAY OF LENT ~ MARCH 17, 2019

FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK

Tuesday is the feast of St. Joseph, our parish’s patron saint. In addition to our usual daily Masses, we will have an

evening Mass at 7:30 for his feast day. St. Joseph is mentioned only a few times in the Gospel narratives, and no words of his are recorded. And yet he is one of the foremost examples the Church has presented to us of how to live the life of Christ. Devotion to him has caused him to be invoked as the protector of workers, and also as the patron of social justice, of chastity, and, (since tradition says that he died in the presence of Jesus and Mary) as patron of a happy death. No wonder Pope Pius IX proclaimed Joseph to be the Patron of the Universal Church in 1870. As we meet him in the Gospel of St. Matthew, Joseph is described as a man who is just, or upright (Mt 1, 19). He is someone of great sensitivity when it comes to hearing God, and of great insight when it comes to discerning God’s will. We see this when he recognizes that Mary’s child is a direct consequence of divine favor and when he takes swift action to protect Jesus against the murderous designs of Herod (Mt 2, 13-15). If, as Rom 1, 17 says, “the just man shall live by faith,” Joseph is a clear and admirable example of doing so, every bit as much as Abraham was when he followed God’s call to leave his native land and to even be willing to sacrifice his son Isaac (Gn 12; Gn 22). And Joseph’s faith never rested at the level of mental views. It was always something he put to service in

(continued above)

all the practical challenges of living. He did so with instancy of response and with complete self-disposal in his willingness to give of himself. We see these qualities not only in his special assignments from God, but also in his steady commitment of work in his occupation as a carpenter, which would have made him a key person in his community, even if it wouldn’t have made him rich. He would have been, in all likelihood, what we would today call a general contractor, able to handle work ranging from fashioning things from wood (such as furniture and plowing equipment) to building and repairing houses. St. Joseph was a strong man who cherished his faith, and a man who

worked reliably in whatever difficulties and challenges life brought him. We can rely not only on the quality of his example, but also on his effective intercession. Father Frederick Faber, a contemporary of Blessed John Henry Newman, has verses that say a great deal about St. Joseph and what he should mean to us:

Dear husband of Mary! Dear nurse of her child! Life’s ways are full weary, the desert is wild; Bleak sands are all round us, no home can we see; Sweet spouse of our Lady! we lean upon thee.

SEMINARIANS VISIT US —NEXT WEEKEND, MARCH 30-31

Behind and before every vocation… is always the strong and intense prayer

a mother, a father, a community…

—Pope Francis Next weekend, we will be treated to a visit from five current Seminarians from the Church of Newark, including one who attended our own Saint Joseph School—Matthew Gonzalez. Come welcome the future priests of our Archdiocese and hear them speak at all Masses. Please also keep them, and anyone who might be discerning a vocation, in your prayers

HAVING A MARY HEART IN A MARTHA WORLD

—TUESDAY, APRIL 9 9:15-10:30 am

or 7:30-9:00 pm Find out how you can have intimacy with Christ

in your busy everyday life.

Join Barbara D’Arrigo, former Pastoral Associate for faith formation at Our Lady of Visitation in Paramus with over 30 years’ experience in faith formation for adults and children, as she talks about the spirituality of Mary and the service of Martha, with prayer included from the best-selling book by Joanna Weaver. Barbara will help us to explore scripture to see what Jesus said 2,000 years ago about how to put Him first. In addition to scripture, attendees will use the Lectio Divina during reflective prayer time to help deepen our prayer lives. The workshop will take place at Saint Joseph’s Retreat House (on Grand Street behind our church). In addition to scripture and prayer, there will be activities and discussion. This very special hour and a half is open to everyone, both women and men. Please let us know which session (morning or evening) you would like to attend by calling the Parish Office at 201-261-0148 by April 3. You are encouraged to bring your own Bible, but scriptural passages will also be available on handouts. Don’t miss this wonderful opportunity to deepen your faith life as we move toward the celebration of the Lord’s Resurrection on Easter.

STEWARDSHIP REFLECTION “ I am the Lord who brought you from Ur of the Chaldeans to give you this land as a possession.”

(Genesis 15:7) Just as the Lord gave Abraham, Moses and the Israelites a land to possess, He has also given each of us a home. Whether your home is grand or humble, it is a gift from God. Abraham prepared a great sacrifice to the Lord in gratitude for the home God gave him. How do you show your gratitude to God for the home He has given you? Do you make a sacrifice of any kind? Do you return any of your finances to God, investing equally in your eternal home just as you invest in your earthly home?
