STEWARDSHIP REFLECTION “He said to them, ‘Why are you afraid?

Have you no faith?’”—MARK 4:40

Most of us like to be in control. Loss of control makes us fearful. Try changing our perspective, let God be the pilot! There’s an old saying, “Do you want to make God laugh? Tell him your plans.” Put your trust in God, He always has a better plan!

TWELFTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME ~ JUNE 21, 2015

FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK

CATHOLIC WAR VETERANS FUND & MEMBERSHIP DRIVE

THANK YOU The Catholic War Veterans and Auxiliary of Fr. Washington Post #1710 of Paramus would like to express a heartfelt “thank you” to Msgr. David Hubba and the parishioners of Saint Joseph for your hospitality during our Cross of Peace collection and Membership Recruitment Drive last weekend. Anyone wishing more information on the CWV or if you would like to join our vibrant post, please contact: Patrick Young—Membership at 201-265-0653 Kurt Strobach, Commander at 201-741-9515 or CWV National Headquarters at 1-703-549-3622. We will gladly answer any questions you may have. Thank you again and God bless you.

For God, for Country, for Family

ESPECIALLY FOR OUR DADS In honor of Father’s Day, as a gift from Saint Joseph Parish, all fathers who are present at Mass this weekend are invited to take home a copy of the booklet Father’s Prayers. The book-lets will be available at the doors of the church or from the ushers.

PRAYER OF A FATHER Father of mankind, you have given me these children and entrusted them to my charge, to bring them up for you, and to prepare them for everlasting life. Help me with your heavenly grace to fulfill this sacred duty. Make me gentle, yet firm, considerate and watchful. Grant that, by word and example, I may lead them in the ways of true wisdom and piety, so that they too will know the joy of loving you. Grant that we all some day may be united in heaven, praising your glory forever. Amen.

(...from Father’s Prayers, Leaflet Missal Company)

In his memoir Always the Young Strangers the poet Carl Sandburg told of how fed up he was with people whose lives were con-sumed by pretensions and greed, and of

how he admired people whose plain lives of work and play stood in sharp contrast to that empty folly. Along the way, he paid grateful tribute to his own parents: … I look at the days and deeds of August Sandburg and say he was a somebody rather than a nobody even though he was never a committee chairman or even a member of a committee . … Peace be to your ashes, Old Man, where you were laid there in Linwood Cemetery out a ways from Main Street, to be followed later by the Old Woman who said so often, “There are so many interesting things in life— wonders made by God for us to think about.” … You were givers of life and did no wrong by any you met on your mortal pilgrimage. Every Father’s Day we have another chance to renew Our thankful reverence to our dads, whether they have Completed their life’s work or whether they are still with us, with so many opportunities of giving and re-ceiving love. As we wish our fathers all the best today, we also ask them to recommit themselves to the crucial work God calls them to. The late Pope John XXIII sum-marized it well when he said: Every family is a gift from God; it implies a vocation which comes from above and for which we must be trained. The family is the beginning of true and right instruction; it is everything, or almost everything, to a man. It is here that the child begins to make his first unforgettable experiments in living; adolescents and young people find in their families examples to imitate and a bulwark against the evil spirit of wrongdoing. The parents themselves find in it a protection against the crises and perplexities they encounter; finally, elderly people can enjoy in family life the well deserved fruit of long faithfulness and constancy.

“WALK-IN DINNER” PROGRAM THANK YOU!

The Saint Joseph Social Concerns Committee would like to sincerely thank our generous parishioners who supported our recent "Walk-in Dinner" at the Housing Health & Human Service Shelter in Hackensack. Whether you made a donation or helped prepare or serve the dinner, you made it possible for us to serve many in need with a good hot dinner, which they told us was delicious. They were very grateful and so are we! God bless you!

WELCOME BACK, BROTHER LUKE!

Saint Joseph Parish is pleased to welcome back Brother John Luke Gilchrist (known and loved by all as “Brother Luke”). A member of the

Congregation of Christian Brothers for 70 years, Brother Luke was part of our parish before and has a long and distinguished career in education in Bergen County and beyond. Brother Luke’s parents, John Gilchrist, a laborer at the City College of New York, and Mary Ann O’Leary, a maid in a doctor’s home, emigrated separately from Galway, Ireland and happily met and married in New York City. Young John Luke grew up in the Bronx. His first assignment as a Christian Brother took him to St. John’s, Newfoundland, where he taught elementary school. His 40-year career in high school education (English and Religion) began at Cardinal Hayes High School in the Bronx where he served for three years. He then taught at Bergen Catholic High School for nine years, at Rice High School in Harlem for four, at Bishop Kearney High School in Rochester, NY for four years, and at Catholic Memorial High School in Boston for 13 years. In 1989, Brother Luke retired from teaching and returned to Bergen Catholic to serve as Alumni moderator and Bingo moderator for four more years. At about that time, Brother John McPartland, a member of Brother Luke’s community, approached Saint Joseph’s pastor, Fr. George Reilly, about renting the parish’s Brothers’ Residence. (The residence on Grand Street between the church and the upper school had initially housed Brothers who taught at Saint Joseph School, then became a convent for the School Sisters of Saint Francis who taught here before resuming its life as a Brother’s Residence when the Sisters left). Brother Luke joined four other Brothers to form that first small community of Christian Brothers living apart from the larger community. It is to that residence that Brother Luke will be returning. And while he may have been living elsewhere for the last few years, Brother Luke has never stopped being active in Saint Joseph parish ministries, including Social Concerns, Cornerstone and New Hope for Children. We are blessed to have Brother Luke back at Saint Joseph and we wish him all the best. If you see him on campus, be sure to say hello!

PILGRIMAGE TO SPAIN & PORTUGAL —OCTOBER 12-21

Join Fr. Roy Regaspi on a 10-day pilgrimage to Portugal and Spain to celebrate the 500th anniversary of the birth of St. Teresa of Avila. In addition to visiting the medieval city of Avila, the church where St. Teresa had frequent visions and the convent that contains her relics, pilgrims will also spend time at Fatima and the Shrine of Our Lady where three local shepherd children saw the Virgin Mary. Departing from Newark, the pilgrimage will travel from Lisbon to Santarem and Fatima (and the Shrine of Fatima), to Alba de Tormes (the burial place of St. Teresa), to Salamanca (“the Golden City”) and Avila, then to Madrid (and the famous Prado Museum), El Escorial (built as King Philip I’s residence, which now serves as a monastery, royal palace, museum and school), and ending at Toledo (the ancient capital that so inspired the famous artist El Greco). For more information, see flyers in the church literature racks or contact Tour Director Buddy S. Deauna at 201-501-8388 or by email at [email protected]

SJS CLASS OF 2015 GRADUATING WITH HONORS

As Saint Joseph School principal Colette Vail welcomed the standing-room only audience assembled in Saint Joseph Church for the June 10th Commencement Exercises of the Class of 2015, she reflected on the achievements of this class of eighth graders. “The class of 2015,” she said, “has been blessed by God in many ways… . Each of them has grown in wisdom and in faith.” She noted that many of the students had received scholarships from various outside organizations and that still more had received scholarship offers from the various high schools based on their performance on the COOP (the Catholic High Schools cooperative admissions exam). “We tallied the dollar amount of scholarships that the class is accepting,” said Mrs. Vail, “not just the amount offered, since many students had offers from more than one high school.” Saint Joseph School is proud to announce that our graduates this year have received over $360,000 in scholarships!

SUMMER PRAYER (from Call to Stewardship, Archdiocese of Newark)

As we begin the summer months, gracious and loving Jesus,

Remind us of Your ever present guidance and love.

Give us confidence in Your presence, remembering all that we have

and let us live it in our summer experiences.

As we work, play and enjoy our family and friends this summer,

May we feel Your love within us, guiding us toward all that is right and just.

Let us be grateful for the gift of summer, Jesus. Allow us to enjoy it safely

and remind us daily of Your love for us.

Amen.
