UChrist Is Victor! Easter Feasting until Pentecost

Since Easter Sunday we have been rejoicing in the victoryof Christ over sin, death and all that oppresses us. Easter isone great feast: fifty days of festivity and celebration, culminating in Pentecost and the coming of the Holy Spirit. On each of the Sundays and weekdays of the Easterseason we are being regaled by the accounts of the Lord’s

resurrection appearances; mysterious and startling appearances that led hisdowncast and disheartened disciples, witnesses of the crucifixion, fromdisillusionment to joy. The readings from the Acts of the Apostles retell for us thespread of Christianity throughout the Mediterranean area by the great apostlesPeter and Paul and their missionary companions. Throughout this festive season, the Easter “Paschal” candle (first lit at theEaster Vigil Mass) is placed prominently in the sanctuary near the pulpit. The risenChrist has illuminated our world of darkness with his glorious light, triumphantover the great enemy death. The candle is a symbol of the presence of the risenChrist among the people of God. Fifty days of living in the Easter victory and luxuriating in it! Fifty days ofabandoning ourselves in joyful love and deepening faith as the Spirit of God takeshold of our lives! But this Easter feasting is not as the world might understand festivity. “It is atime of intensified consciousness, finely tuned awareness, awakened memory. Thegreat fifty days... are not an unwelcome, unrealistic, obligation to “party on,” even ifwe don’t feel like it, but an invitation to explore more deeply..., to awaken our memoryof God’s presence and power in our lives, to look more closely at all the rich andvaried textures of creation. In short, (the 50 days) are a season for learning how to say‘yes’ in a culture that wants to keep on saying ‘no’.”(Nathan Mitchell, A BlessedPentecost) Because of the victory of Christ we can live life more intensely, celebrate lovemore generously, and die one day more courageously. “Oh death where is yourvictory, oh death, where is your sting?” In less than fifty days we will celebrate the birth of the church – PentecostSunday. Once more we will sing out: “Come Holy Spirit fill the hearts of yourfaithful, and enkindle in them the fire of your love!”

Easter peace, Father Bruce

“Jesus came and stood in their midst and said tothem, ‘Peace be with you.’” This greeting from theresurrected Christ must have been a profound one for thedisciples. They were living behind locked doors “for fear ofthe Jews,” which really meant for fear of their own lives. They had seen what happened to Jesus and didn’t want toface the same fate. Imagine the paralysis of this fear, keeping them locked inside a prison of their own making.

But even the walls and the locks could not keepJesus out! He came “although the doors were locked” andbrought them a message of peace. And then their fearturned to gladness for they “rejoiced when they saw theLord.”

This transformation from sadness to joy, from fearto peace was not just a gift for these first disciples. It is agift for all of the followers of the Lord, ourselves included! When we are afraid of what might happen in our lives, where we are trapped or paralyzed by the burdens of ourown habitual sins, Jesus wants to step in and offer uspeace. This is what we celebrate today on this feast of themercy of Christ. His love and peace—the gift of hismercy—is meant for all of us, weak, sinful, and scaredthough we may be.

And we who receive this great gift of mercy fromthe Lord are also called to be merciful to others. We arecalled to be peacemakers and to forgive others as we havebeen forgiven. Our celebration of Divine Mercy need notstop at the doors of our own hearts. We can seek ways tobe ministers of God’s mercy to others, reaching out withthe love of God, bringing comfort and consolation to thosewho need it most.

For the elderly on Long Island, Meals-on-Wheels is a lifesaver. Every weekday, theprogram delivers hot, nutritious meals to seniors who are homebound in Nassau andSuffolk counties. Meals-on-Wheels case managers can also assist these clients inaccessing other services they might need.“I knew something was wrong as soon as I saw him,” explains Steve, a driver forCatholic Charities’ Meals-on-Wheels. Steve had been delivering meals to Ed forseveral years and upon arriving that fateful day, immediately observed that he seemeddisoriented.

Steve knew Ed was diabetic, so he checked his blood sugar and saw that it was low. Hepoured him some orange juice but sensed there was something more serious going on.“I kept asking him to let me call 911 but he resisted. I couldn’t accept that so I justcasually stuck around, making my case. He finally admitted that he didn’t haveanyone to care for his dog if he was hospitalized, so I promised I would, and that’swhen he gave me the green light to call.”It was a good thing, too. At the hospital Ed was diagnosed with a serious bloodinfection that kept him there for nearly four months. In the meantime, Steve cared for thedog until Ed’s sister arrived from out of town.

Due to the constant unchecked flow of data andinformation through the Internet, it can be hard to knowwhen a story is real news or rubbish. It never ceases toamaze me when someone I know has bought into somecrazy fake news story. Sometimes the story is just sounbelievable: celebrities who gained two hundred poundsin a month, women having babies who were neverpregnant, or people actually being seen who are dead!Like Elvis!

The apostle Thomas found the news that Jesus was alivejust too far-fetched to believe. But he didn’t first hear thenews on the Internet or read it standing in the grocerystore checkout line. His friends told him. His fellowapostles told him they had actually seen the Lord withtheir own eyes. Their testimony was not enough. Heneeded proof.

The resurrection of Jesus gives us not only hope, but alsoa reason to be his disciples. We have not seen with ourown eyes but, like Thomas, we have a community, theChurch, that has relayed the truth to us. This same Jesusnow calls us to go forth to spread the Gospel. Moreunbelievable than that, we have, through the gifts wehave been given, a chance to change and even save lives. The day may come that you, moved by this news of therisen Lord, will be an agent of his love to the point wheresomeone will tell the tale that you, a follower of Jesus, actually helped to change his or her life. Prettyunbelievable, right?

LIVE THE LITURGY - INSPIRATIONFOR THE WEEK

Breathing is necessary for living. Without airand the ability to breathe, we would die. It isno wonder then that Jesus breathed on thedisciples and gave them the Holy Spirit. As ourphysical breath is essential to physically live, the Holy Spirit is essential to personally andsocially live. Jesus shows his friends that Godis within them, sustaining them with his giftsand providing them with the fullness of life andlove. We take God’s role in our lives forgranted and we give ourselves more credit thanwe ought. Much of what we treasure andaccomplish every day is due to God’s innerpresence moving and acting within us callingus to new life.
