STEWARDSHIP REFLECTION

The theme of this Sunday’s Scripture readings is two-fold: God manifests Himself and man responds to that manifestation with gifts of gratitude and conversion of heart.

The Magi, who were likely astrologists and magicians, made the long journey from somewhere far away to see the Savior, and when they saw him, they gave Him themselves. The gold, frankincense, and myrrh were likely “tricks of the trade” they surrendered to the Lord upon meeting Him. Then, the Gospel tells us, they departed from another way.

Such language tells us not simply that the Magi traveled home on a different route, but on a deeper level, that their lives were changed that day. Their encounter with Christ made a huge impact on their lives, calling them to give of themselves and then to live the remainder of their lives accord-ingly.

Their story is a great example to all of us. It speaks of some universal truths.

As Christian stewards, we live for God. Everything we do and say ought to proclaim the Gospel and bring others closer to Christ so that one day, as the psalmist sings “Every nation on Earth will adore” Him.

God has given each one of us many good gifts. As stewards, let us use the gifts He has given us – our time, our talent, and our treasure – at home, at church, at work, and wherever else we find ourselves, to glorify Him and, in so doing, call others to encounter Christ and live for Him.

Year-end Contribution statements will be available “upon request” only. To have a statement mailed to you, please call the rectory office (during regular busi-ness hours, M-F) with name and envelope contribu-tion number or drop us a note with this information in the collection basket. Thank you.

“HERITAGE DAYS”

Mrs. Graves’ 5th Grade students from St. Michael's School participated in “Heritage Days” at school. The class studied a Heritage Unit in Reading and learned different ways in which others celebrated their heri-tage/customs. The 5th graders wanted to bring their own heritage/customs to school to share with each other. Each student brought in food or items that re-flected their heritage and shared it with the class.

Pictured above are Jaden Durbin, Mitchell Lawless and Eden Bruhns with various items that they brought in representing their heritage.

Lay Carmelite Formation Classes to Begin

Are you a Catholic, man or woman, in good stand-ing, between the ages of 18 and 70, and drawn to a committed life of prayer? Is our Lord calling you to a more intimate relationship through a vocation to the Lay Carmelite order? If so, you should consider join-ing the new formation class of the St. Teresa of Avila Lay Carmelite Community that begins on January 7th, 2012, February 4th and March 3rd. The classes will begin on April 7th and this will give you three months to find out about the Carmelites.

Formation includes one year of preparation for re-ception, two more years of preparation for temporary profession, and three additional years of preparation for permanent profession. Course of study includes Carmelite spirituality, teachings of St. Therese of Lisieux, St. Teresa of Avila, St. John of the Cross, other saints and blessed or the order, history of the order, Christian doctrine, and scripture. There is no cost for the classes, but candidates are expected to purchase their won books and study materials.

Instruction and meeting take place in Mendota at the St. Therese House at 807 Michigan Avenue and are held once a month - on the first Saturday - follow-ing the 8:00 AM Mass, from 8:30 AM until 3:30 PM. For more information call Joyce Loebach at 815-795-5142, Rose Rogalla at 815-795-5587 or Sandee Donahue at 815-539-6323.

Many thanks to Mrs. Ann Harcharik who donated “Happy Birthday Jesus” Christmas bracelets to the Religious Education students. May God bless you!

TEENS ENCOUNTER CHRIST

The weekend is sponsored by the Roman Catholic Diocese of Peoria and is Catholic in its doctrine and liturgy. However, any teen, regard-less of religious faith is welcome and invited to partici-pate. TEC follows the guidelines of the Diocesan Di-rector, and each weekend is led by a “team” made up of adults, teens, a priest, deacon and sister.

The program includes a variety of talks, the Sacra-ment of Reconciliation, Mass, fun and fellowship. There is time for reflection on serious questions of life. This retreat offers participants the experience of form-ing Christian Community. On TEC the message of Christ reaches not only the intellect but the heart.
