2. SAINT PHILIP THE APOSTLE CATHOLIC CHURCH

A Message From Our Pastor

Father’s Formed.org Suggestion of the Week READ – Nonfiction - TEACHINGS OF THE FAITH

Catholic Christianity by Peter Kreeft

We pick up our reflection from the booklet, I Give God a

Present at Mass, at the consecration. At this point in Mass, we

spiritually enter the upper room with Jesus at the Last Supper.

The gift Jesus gives us through the Eucharist is the gift of His

body and blood, soul and divinity. He becomes the Passover

sacrifice for us to the Father. He himself took bread, and, giv-

ing you (the Father) thanks, he said the blessing, broke the

bread, and gave it to his disciples, saying; Take this all of you

and eat of it, for this is my body which will be given up for you.

As we know Jesus did the same act with the chalice of wine.

I offer the consecration prayer to reflect on in light of “gift.”

Jesus offered to his disciples (we are included in the group of

disciples) the gift of life through the reception of his body and

blood as is understood from “the Bread of Life Discourse” in

John 6. We consume that which to our scenes tastes like bread

and wine, but in Truth is this very Bread of Life, Jesus’ body

and blood given to us that we might have life.

But to what end is this gift given to us? The offering of his

body and blood, though given to us to consume, is the sacrifi-

cial offering to the Father to satisfy the sin of Adam and Eve’s

consumption of what God forbade them to eat. Tying this sac-

rifice to the sacrifice Christ makes on the cross, we realize the

depth of the gift of the Eucharist. We receive eternal life and

salvation from damnation to eternal death through this gift, and

Jesus takes us into himself to offer us to the Father.

We then are wrapped up in the very gift of the Son to the

Father. As we are present at the Last Supper through the cele-

bration of the Mass, we are there also to present ourselves to

the Father with the Son in His Spirit. The booklet suggest a

heartfelt prayer as the priest elevates the body and then the

blood: “Dear Father, I give you Jesus. I give you myself.”

Then after the consecration is complete, and realizing the gift

offered also to you in the Eucharist, express your gratitude:

“Jesus, thank you for offering yourself for me, and for being

my Present to God. Help me to belong to God always.”

FIRST READING - 1 Samuel 26:2,7-9,12-13,22-23 In those days, Saul went down to the desert of Ziph with three thousand

picked men of Israel, to search for David in the desert of Ziph. So David

and Abishai went among Saul’s soldiers by night and found Saul lying

asleep within the barricade, with his spear thrust into the ground at his

head and Abner and his men sleeping around him. Abishai whispered to

David: “God has delivered your enemy into your grasp this day. Let me

nail him to the ground with one thrust of the spear; I will not need a

second thrust!” But David said to Abishai, “Do not harm him, for who

can lay hands on the LORD’s anointed and remain unpunished?”

So David took the spear and the water jug from their place at

Saul’s head, and they got away without anyone’s seeing or knowing or

awakening. All remained asleep, because the LORD had put them into a

deep slumber. Going across to an opposite slope, David stood on a re-

mote hilltop at a great distance from Abner, son of Ner, and the troops.

He said: “Here is the king’s spear. Let an attendant come over to get it.

The LORD will reward each man for his justice and faithfulness. Today,

though the LORD delivered you into my grasp, I would not harm the

LORD’s anointed.”

SECOND READING - 1 Corinthians 15:45-49 Brothers and sisters: It is written, The first man, Adam, became a

living being, the last Adam a life-giving spirit. But the spiritual

was not first; rather the natural and then the spiritual. The first

man was from the earth, earthly; the second man, from heaven.

As was the earthly one, so also are the earthly, and as is the heav-

enly one, so also are the heavenly. Just as we have borne the im-

age of the earthly one, we shall also bear the image of the heav-

enly one.

GOSPEL - Luke 6:27-38 Jesus said to his disciples: “To you who hear I say, love your

enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse

you, pray for those who mistreat you. To the person who strikes

you on one cheek, offer the other one as well, and from the per-

son who takes your cloak, do not withhold even your tunic. Give

to everyone who asks of you, and from the one who takes what is

yours do not demand it back. Do to others as you would have

them do to you. For if you love those who love you, what credit

is that to you? Even sinners love those who love them. And if

you do good to those who do good to you, what credit is that to

you? Even sinners do the same. If you lend money to those from

whom you expect repayment, what credit is that to you? Even

sinners lend to sinners, and get back the same amount.

But rather, love your enemies and do good to them, and lend ex-

pecting nothing back; then your reward will be great and you will

be children of the Most High, for he himself is kind to the un-

grateful and the wicked. Be merciful, just as your Father is merci-

ful. “Stop judging and you will not be judged. Stop condemning

and you will not be condemned. Forgive and you will be for-

given. Give, and gifts will be given to you; a good measure,

packed together, shaken down, and overflowing, will be poured

into your lap. For the measure with which you measure will in

return be measured out to you.”

Church Bible Study.. Please

join us for our 6 week Bible

Study beginning in March –

Disciples on the Journey. This inspirational lectionary-

based resource will…

♦ Help deepen one’s personal relationship with God.

♦ Inspire and encourage participants to live as Jesus’ dis-

ciples in daily life.

♦ Enliven faith by personal reflection on Scripture.

♦ Provide new insights into the Sunday readings through

the commentaries and discussion and sharing with oth-

ers.

♦ Enhance the ability to hear and be open to the Work of

God proclaimed at Sunday liturgy.

Feasts and Celebrations… Feb 22: St. Peter’s Chair (1st

century). We celebrate the establishment of the Holy See

and pray for the preservation of God’s Church. The “Chair

of Peter” refers to the relic of an actual chair of St. Peter

and to the spiritual authority of the Church, symbolized by

the chair.

Growing in Faith… Make every Sunday the Lord’s

Day…

“This is the day the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be

glad in it” (Psalm 118:24). God wants us to have a day of

rest each week. He felt it was so necessary that he made it

a Commandment. While it is non-negotiable for God’s

people, a busy person may find it hard to do Sunday right.

Try these tips for make Sunday the Lord’s Day:

Attend Mass. Both Jesus’ Resurrection and Pentecost

occurred on Sunday. There’s no better way to celebrate the

Lord’s Day than to worship him during Mass on Sunday.

Schedule chores. It’s not very restful to stand in line at

the grocery store or change the oil in your car. Try to ac-

complish chores and errands another day so you can spend

time relaxing on Sunday.

Alternate entertainment. Instead of turning on the TV

or zoning on the smartphone, take a nice long drive, curl up

with a good book, or visit friends or family. Do whatever it

takes to recharge your spirit.

Create a unique prayer habit. Offer prayers that you

only say on Sundays. Read Scripture. Listen to sacred mu-

sic. Take time to thank God for your blessings.

Protect the day. Make Sunday a priority. Don’t let

anything interfere with your rest, peace, or worship. Let

the Holy Spirit guide your day.
