2. SAINT PHILIP THE APOSTLE CATHOLIC CHURCH
A Message From Our Pastor Father’s Formed.org Suggestion of the Week LISTEN – Talks – ADVENT AND CHRISTMAS
The True Meaning of Christmas by Archbishop Sheen On behalf of Fr. Oscar and myself, I want to thank you all for your Christmas greetings, Masses and generous gifts. They will help out tremendously with our priestly ministry and personal things that we need to buy, espe-cially since Fr. Oscar will be going back to Ghana at the end of January for the ordination of his brother. I ask you to prayer for his safe travels and for the priestly ministry of his brother. One final thank you for your generosity: On your behalf, I was able to make a won-derful donation to the Diocese’s Seminary Burse that will help with the future education of our seminarians. Please keep them in your prayers as they discern God’s will and prepare for a life of priestly service to the dio-cese. Their names, birthdays, and addresses can be found on the poster in the foyer of the Church or online at www.victoriadiocese.org/seminarians so you can pray for them by name and even correspond with them. We conclude the Season of Christmas on Monday with the celebration of the Baptism of the Lord. The Lord has become present to us and we have celebrated that great event as we continue to pay him homage like the Magi did those many years ago. Christ becomes present to us in the Sacraments, especially at every Mass through the actions and words of the priest. We need good and holy priests that Christ be with us through the Sacraments. Please pray for the young men of our parish, even those of your own family to hear God’s will. If it be to enter the seminary, be an encouraging light for them to make this difficult and sometimes frightening decision. We have our vocation crucifix that can go home with you as a reminder to lift up this important petition. May God’s will be done on Earth as it is in Heaven.

the Lord
All kings shall pay him homage; all nations shall serve him. Psalm 72:11
3. NEXT SUNDAY’S READINGS JANUARY 14, 2018
FIRST READING - 1 Samuel 3:3-10,19 Samuel was sleeping in the temple of the LORD where the ark of God was. The LORD called to Samuel, who answered, "Here I am." Samuel ran to Eli and said, "Here I am. You called me." "I did not call you, " Eli said. "Go back to sleep." So he went back to sleep. Again the LORD called Samuel, who rose and went to Eli. "Here I am, " he said. "You called me." But Eli answered, "I did not call you, my son. Go back to sleep." At that time Samuel was not familiar with the LORD, because the LORD had not revealed anything to him as yet. The LORD called Samuel again, for the third time. Getting up and going to Eli, he said, "Here I am. You called me." Then Eli un-derstood that the LORD was calling the youth. So he said to Samuel, "Go to sleep, and if you are called, reply, Speak, LORD, for your servant is listening." When Samuel went to sleep in his place, the LORD came and revealed his presence, calling out as before, "Samuel, Samuel!" Samuel answered, "Speak, for your servant is listening." Samuel grew up, and the LORD was with him, not permitting any word of his to be with-out effect.
SECOND READING - 1 Corinthians 6:13-15,16-23 Brothers and sisters: The body is not for immorality, but for the Lord, and the Lord is for the body; God raised the Lord and will
also raise us by his power. Do you not know that your bodies are members of Christ? But whoever is joined to the Lord becomes one Spirit with him. Avoid immorality. Every other sin a person commits is outside the body, but the immoral person sins against his own body. Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God, and that you are not your own? For you have been purchased at a price. Therefore glorify God in your body.
GOSPEL - John 1:35-42 John was standing with two of his disciples, and as he watched Jesus walk by, he said, "Behold, the Lamb of God." The two disciples heard what he said and followed Jesus. Jesus turned and saw them following him and said to them, "What are you looking for?" They said to him, "Rabbi" — which translated means Teacher —, "where are you staying?" He said to them, "Come, and you will see." So they went and saw where Jesus was staying, and they stayed with him that day. It was about four in the afternoon. Andrew, the brother of Simon Peter, was one of the two who heard John and followed Jesus. He first found his own brother Simon and told him, "We have found the Messiah" — which is translated Christ —. Then he brought him to Jesus. Jesus looked at him and said, "You are Simon the son of John; you will be called Cephas" — which is translated Peter.
Key Scriptural Passage:
On entering the house, they saw the child with Mary his mother. (Matthew 2:10)
\ Questions for Discussion:
Adult: When have you found the presence of Christ in an unexpected place? Child: Where and in whom will you look for Jesus this week?

St. Philip the Apostle Bible Study
Forgiven: The Transforming Power of Confession
Have you ever received a “wake-up call” that inspired you to make a change in your life? Maybe it was some-thing significant like a health issue that forced you to make better choices. Or perhaps a comment from a friend con-vinced you to take a difference course of action on some-thing. When we go off course in life, God often sends us a wake-up call to draw us back. But sometimes it’s difficult – even painful – to stop, listen, and turn around. Thank-fully, God doesn’t ask us to do it on our own. He not only calls us home, but he also walks with us every step of the
way.
Please join us in discovering the merciful way that God seeks us out when we have sinned and calls us back to himself. This study will help us recognize the beauty of the Rite of Penance and the transformative power of the grace God offers us in this sacrament. This five week study begins the week of Jan. 8, 2018. All classes are held at the St. Philip’s Meeting House. Class options are Mondays @ 10 am, Tuesdays @10 am, Tuesdays @ 6:30 pm, and Thursdays @ 9 am. All students will receive their materials for this study in their classroom on the first day of the class. For more information contact Essie Leslie at
979/543-6570 or [email protected]
Solemnity of the Epiphany of the Lord…
Jesus is God’s epiphany, God’s self-disclosure. In Jesus, all people can walk in God’s ways as sons and daughters of God. Though Jesus illuminates the path to God, not eve-ryone follows it. The Herods of the world, who rule through domination and violence, are greatly disturbed by threats to their wealth and power. The dark clouds of fear and terror they create obscure the path to peace. Only the wise ones—women and men who can see with
the eyes of the heart—are able to perceive God’s appear-ance on earth. They speak God’s words to the downcast: “Look up and see!” Hearts that are broken throb with joy and gratitude. When we raise our eyes, we see God’s glory and walk by God’s light. No longer do we follow the paths of the world; we take another route, guided by the light of Christ, who leads us to our true home.
Thank you… St. Philip Church sponsored our annual advent drive for food and other items needed for the Blessing Cup. 221 bags of food and items were collected. Thanks to our parishioners who want to help those in need, to HEB who so generously donated 200 paper bags, to Andy who donated 200 more paper bags and to the confir-mation students sponsored by Polly Wilkins who helped load and unload the bags of food - Carly Oldag, Amber Sutton, Madi Montalvo, Peyton Stock, Kinley Bubela, James Anderson, Jerrid Berglund, Bethani Gold, and Clay Jung. A big thank you to all who make this possible from our church community to help others in need.
