Pastor’s CornerPastor’s CornerPastor’s Corner Rincón del PastorRincón del PastorRincón del Pastor In the comic strip “Peanuts”, Snoopy is sitting by the din-ner table while Charlie Brown tosses him a treat. Snoopy devours it with a few chomps. Then Snoopy says: “I kind of like leftovers now and then. The only hard part is wait-ing for there to be something left over.” Most of us are softies. Is there really anyone who has not, at one time or another, secretly slipped a treat under the table to the family dog or cat? What a joy to feel the happy nuzzle of that soft, whiskered mouth as your pet gratefully receives your gift. Yes, we know the rules: “Don’t feed the dog from the table.” Yet, you know that they are down there on the floor with their hungry eyes fixed on your hand. In today’s Gospel, a persistent Canaanite woman re-minds Jesus that even the dogs receive the scraps from their master’s table. At that point, Jesus declared: “O woman, great is your faith! Let it be done for you as you wish.” The Gospel of Matthew was written some 50-60 years after the death of Jesus. It emerged from a community of believers struggling to deal with two major concerns: First, the role of the “gentiles” or “foreigners,” people of different cultural and ethnic backgrounds. What should we do with these people? How should we behave towards them? Second, the role of women in the early church community. The matter of how to treat people who are not “one of our own” - immigrants or those different than ourselves - has been very present in the news in recent times. Coun-tries all over the world are grappling with the issue of refugees. Who is to be accepted? Who is to be rejected? Who will not even be considered. In today’s Gospel Jesus himself is struggling with these very questions through an encounter with a woman - a very persistent woman, who refuses to take “no” for an answer. At first, Jesus demonstrates how uncomforta-ble he is with her because she is not Jewish. She is part of another culture, another country, another religion. At first he stays with “his own kind,” and states: “I was sent only to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.” Ultimately it is not her persistence that transforms Jesus. Instead it’s his amazement at the depth of her love for her daughter and her recognition breadth of God’s love for all humans. It’s her belief that God loves all peo-ple and will heal all people. What Jesus finds remarkable is the woman’s faith. That’s our lesson from today’s Gospel. It will be our faith that will lead us through all the heartaches and the de-mons that torment us. It will be our faith that will over-come all our many biases and prejudices and give us hearts large enough to welcome everyone. It will be our faith that will transform us. Just as it did for Jesus. This weekend we have a Missionary speaking at all our Masses. The church is larger than just our faith com-munity here at Saint Paschal’s. We are all being given an opportunity to be missionaries by supporting the mis-sionary work of the church in places where Christianity is not the predominant faith nor is the culture the same as ours. What is the same is that all of us are God’s people and we are being given an opportunity to help others. Your generosity would be most welcome to help Fr. Gudime Devasahaym from Cuddapah, India. Thank you for caring. Father Michael Rocha

Padre Michael Rocha

Stewardship

Online Giving Through Faith Direct In addition to saving paper (and trees!) here are some other benefits to setting up automatic offertory giving online: • Intentionally - By having your weekly or monthly

offering taken out of your account on a recurring ba-sis, you are giving your “first fruits” to God, Online giving is a tool that will help you make giving a pri-ority by scheduling your donations

• Simplicity - You won’t have to worry about whether

or not you remembered to turn in your check. When you go out of town or miss a mass for any reason, your gift to St. Paschal will continue automatically.

• Security - Giving online is even more secure than

using checks, because electronic gifts cannot be lost or stolen.

• No Distractions - On Sunday morning you can come

ready to worship without all the distractions of writ-ing a check because you know your gift is already taken care of.

• Easy Tracking - On line giving is easier to track for

our administrative staff and requires less processing since information is automatically logged and depos-ited. You can more accurately track your records es-pecially for tax season.

Giving online is an easy and convenient way to support St. Paschal Baylon. Simply visit www. Faithdirect.net (St. Paschal’s Church Code is CA592) to set up your weekly or monthly gift. You personally select either the 1st or 15th of the month for your offering. You receive a confirmation email for each transaction. For assistance with this, please contact JoAnn at the Parish Center.

Did You Know?

Teach kids when to say something It is important to help children understand the difference between telling on others and sharing information that could help keep themselves or someone else safe. Teach children about secrets that are okay (a surprise birthday party), and secrets that are never okay (don’t tell mom or dad that...), and, perhaps most importantly, what to do if someone asks them to keep a bad secret. Speaking up can save a kid from harm or abuse. To request a copy of the VIRTUS® article “To Tattle or Protect” email [email protected] or call (213) 637-7227.

St. Paschal Baylon Catholic School

Hello and Happy August.

Welcome to 2017-2018 academic school year. I arrived in July excited to carry on the legacy of pride and academic excellence Suzanne Duffy has built for the last 20 years. I feel blessed to be a part of this school and parish community. Thank you for making me feel welcome. Last year, under the guidance of Suzanne Duffy, our computer teacher David Lynch and teachers Julie Roland and Molly Bostic s applied for a C3 Ignite Grant through the Archdiocese of Los Angeles. This grant is providing training and implementation of IPads throughout the student body and faculty at Saint Pascal Baylon School. The IPads will be used to support learning within the classroom and take student above and beyond! Our faculty is currently receiving trainings that focus on IPad essentials, formative assessment tools, classroom management using technology and digital citizenship. We welcome visitors! Please call the school to make an appointment and we can show you the C3 Ignite Grant working in action! Thank you, Suzanne, David, Julie, Molly, and the Archdiocese of Los Angeles. CALLED TO ACT IN GOD’S NAME

“Let all the nations praise you!” (Psalm 67:4) today’s psalm response exclaims. In the psalms and other Hebrew scriptures, this kind of invocation is actually an invitation to God to act, to intervene in human lives in a manner that will cause everyone—not just the Chosen People—to give praise. Stated a bit more strongly, it is something of a “put up or shut up” challenge to God, the sort of strong statement the psalmists of Israel, trusting in their intimate and loving relationship with God, were not afraid to make. The Gospel has its own exclamation, announcing the appearance of the Canaanite woman with “Behold!” (Matthew 15:22) “Behold!” is a scriptural flag that tells us that God is about to act or announce something through an individual or a situation. In the case of Jesus, God was going to act through this woman, whom nobody among Jesus’ followers would have believed to be an agent of the divine will. Like the psalmists, we might passively inform or perhaps even actively challenge God to do something so that everyone will come to belief, but God will always turn the tables on us. It becomes our calling, our duty (as it was for Jesus) to behold the situations and persons of our daily lives so that God can act through us, so the Kingdom can be announced through our living. Second Reading — The gifts and the calling of God are unable to be revoked (Romans 11:13-15, 29-32). Gospel — Jesus told the Canaanite woman of great faith, “It shall be done as you wish” (Matthew 15:21-28). Once the way was cleared for additional Eucharistic Prayers, those who were appointed to compose them had to look deep within the tradition for sources. One of the prescriptions for new prayers was that they be “unencumbered by useless repetition.” From the start, therefore, the writers knew that the old Roman Canon, which had the priest bowing and crossing himself many times in a long, complex prayer, was not a model of simplicity. Aside from the prayers treasured by Eastern Christians, there is an obvious model from ancient Rome. For about a hundred years now, the historical text “Apostolic Tradition” has shed some light for us on the shadowy shape of worship in the early church. In it, its author, Hippolytus, took care to record the actual texts of worship used at the time. He himself has a shadow side, since he was so ardently conservative in his tastes that he broke ties with the Bishop of Rome and became first in the line of history’s anti-popes. At the eleventh hour, however, he reconciled with his enemies and actually died a martyr. In fact, he was shipped off to the Sardinian mines as a slave with the true pope as his companion in chains. Because his tussle with the pope was over theological innovations and not liturgical texts, we are sure that his account of the style of Eucharistic Prayer in the third century is accurate. It forms the core of today’s Eucharistic Prayer II. —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

No interesa.
