Living

Students and staff at Saint Paul Catholic School have se led into the familiar rou ne of car lines, lunch,

recess, classwork, and homework. The use of masks is now second nature as are the other safety protocols that are

part of our daily rou ne. As we move forward in the 2020-2021 school year, Saint

Paul Catholic School is dedicated to the spiritual, intellectual, physical and social development of each

student, as we have been since 1887. Saint Paul strives to educate the whole child and welcomes students of all

faiths. Our rigorous and classical curriculum prepares children for a life me of learning and leadership built on a solid founda on of faith. Our students learn to listen

carefully, explore fully, and think cri cally. Most of our students are receiving instruc on in person,

in our classrooms, while students who cannot a end physically can a end these same live classes remotely.

In school or learning from home, we are together at Saint Paul Catholic School.

THE CROSS OF JESUS

The percep on of a cross changed drama cally a er Jesus’ crucifixion. Before that event, death on a cross was not only horrible, it was degrading. It was a penalty reserved only for the most wretched of criminals. The word “glory” would not have found its way into the same sentence containing the word “cross.” But all that changed with Jesus. Over me, believers began to venerate and honor the cross. They painted, sculpted and carved images of it. Many lost their own lives for their associa on with it. Today our reverence for and rela onship with the cross recalls li le of the contempt originally associated with it. As it has been through the ages, it is our percep on of the cross that determines how we follow Jesus. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

Please con nue to pray for Saint Paul Rosary Makers and join us if you are interested. A very special thank you to those who donated funds to our ministry. Rest

Dynamic Saint Paul - Funding A Third Century

Over the next few weeks, you will be hearing about the upcoming Dynamic Saint Paul - Funding A Third Century at Saint Paul Catholic Church. This effort is very important as we move forward with the mission and vision of Saint Paul Catholic Church. We, as a parish family, have changed so many lives in our community! In order to con nue our mission and ministries, we encourage all parishioners to spend me in prayer and discussion with your family reflec ng on the work we do. Our special Commitment Weekend will be celebrated on September 19th and 20th. If you have any ques ons regarding the Dynamic Saint

Paul - Funding A Third Century, please feel free to contact the parish office.

Sister Monique Dissen, IHM

We are one month away from Sister’s departure from New Bern a er 22 years. With gra tude to Almighty God, we regard her talents, virtues and her prayers as great blessings for us individually and for the parish.

Please reserve Sunday, September 13 from 3pm to 5pm for a drop-in “Photo Art Show” to see her photos (and some of Dr John McQuade’s Photo Art) and talk about the meaning and the beauty.

Other means of honoring Sister’s friendship are upcoming: for example, a scrap book to which you can contribute a short story, photo or anecdote. She will treasure notes and cards that share with her how God has blessed you. Please contribute something!

The Catholic Bishops of the United States are pleased to offer once again to the Catholic faithful Forming Consciences for Faithful Ci zenship (y en Español), our teaching document on the poli cal responsibility of Catholics. This statement represents our guidance for Catholics in the exercise of their rights and du es as par cipants in our democracy. We urge our pastors, lay and religious faithful, and all people of good will to use this statement to help form their consciences; to teach those entrusted to their care; to contribute to civil and respec ul public dialogue; and to shape poli cal choices in the coming elec on in light of Catholic teaching. The statement li s up our dual heritage as both faithful Catholics and American ci zens with rights and du es as par cipants in the civil order.

GENERAL QUESTIONS 1. What is the connec on between our faith and the desire to change the world for the be er? (For help, see excerpts from Pope Francis in Part I.) 2. What kinds of leaders does our society need? For what should they stand and how should they lead? (For help, see no. 14.) 3. Why do the bishops encourage all Catholics, whether able to vote or not, to be involved in poli cal life? What are other ways, in addi on to vo ng, that you can be involved in advocacy for important issues? (For help, see no. 16.) 4. How might public policies and laws be different if the moral principles from Faithful Ci zenship were used as a basis for poli cal decisions? 5. What is conscience? What is prudence? How does one develop a well-formed conscience and the virtue of prudence? What role should they play in our decisions about who we vote for and how we advocate for change? (For help, see nos. 17-20.) GOING DEEPER 1. What do the bishops mean when they say, "Both opposing evil and doing good are essen al obliga ons" (no. 24)? Why are both (not just one or the other) important for Catholics? What are examples of intrinsically evil acts and why must they always be opposed? What are examples of t basic needs of our neighbors which we must ensure are fulfilled? (For help, see nos. 21-25.) What might your own ac ons to avoid evil and to do good look like? 2. Some people ques on whether religion and poli cs should ever interact. What do the bishops say in response to this cri cism? What is the role of the Church in poli cal life? (For help, see nos. 1, 5 and 9-12.) 3. Name the four principles and seven themes of Catholic Social Teaching. How can these principles and themes help us to think about policies and laws? Name some of the issues discussed in the statement and describe how the principles and themes relate to these issues. (See nos. 43-56.) 4. What advice might you give to a friend who is trying to decide between two candidates, neither of which fully share the Church's commitment to the dignity of the human person? (For help, see nos. 34-39.) 5. The bishops describe two "tempta ons in public life" that voters can fall into: first, "moral equivalence" which "makes no ethical dis nc ons between different kinds of issues involving human life and dignity," and second, the misuse of moral dis nc ons "as a way of dismissing or ignoring other serious threats to human life and dignity." (See nos. 27-30.) Describe a situa on in which you witnessed one or both of these lines of thought. Why are they both distor ons of the Church's teaching?
