Please send submissions to [email protected]. “From the Pastor” Looking back… Looking ahead… Lots of you know enough of my story to know that my father was a Lutheran Pastor who died in middle age 50 years ago. All of that has become grist for my religious mill, but that is not what this is all about. It is though, given the whole anniversary thing, grist for my personal history mill. I have been invited countless times to preach at anniversary services, not just for my former churches but for those where I was the preacher’s kid. Perhaps you have heard enough of this to know that I worry about the focus on the past inevitably associated with church anniversaries. No, I am not going to point it out again. Perhaps it is even more important. After many years of carrying around and shoving into our small storage places some unlabeled boxes of family keepsakes and “pictures”, in August I opened a plastic bag that had been stuffed in one of those boxes. It was filled with hundreds of loose photographic slides. Now my family from grandfather to father and finally me rarely took simple snapshots that were printed on photographic paper… So most of the pictures we took will be on those slides. I have long believed that most of the slides from my father (and for that matter grandfather) had been lost in a minor flood event when we were in the process of getting ready to move to Lutherville. When I reached into that bag, I expected that anything I found would be badly damaged. But the first slide I looked at was an image of me as a very small child with a family dog that I could no longer picture. It didn’t take long to find picture after picture that opened up my history. That is the personal stuff… a childhood brought back to life… maybe that is what anniversaries are all about! But it doesn’t stop there. Mixed with the family pictures were slides taken in the four churches where my father served in the late ‘40s and early ‘50s… building construction projects… Bible Schools… churches decorated for Christmas…perhaps most startling confirmation classes. All of the pictures paint a picture of a glorious period… adding the four churches together the confirmation pictures from 1954 include at least 50 confirmands in white robes. I will find a way to forward these pictures to those churches… a bit of history. More disturbing is the comparison that it is easy to draw between what was going on 75 years ago and what is going on now. None of this is new. It has been happening over all of those years. One way to deal with it is to simply lament what is clearly a decline in numbers. Another way to deal with it is to look to the future, not to rebuild what once was, but to find ways to proclaim the good news of the Gospel to a very different generation… a very different world. That has taken a long time to sink in on me, but I think that I am finally approaching a vision of a community of discipleship devoted not just to community life, but to serving our Lord by bringing his love to the world around us. That at least is the vision that I pray for as I look not back but forward to St. Paul’s church in the years to come. Pr Carl Myers

Sunday, September 8

September 8th was our rally day kick off for the Sunday School year. We had a beautiful day, clear and warm. A

picnic was held at the pavilion, followed by a puppet show. The show was put on by the Grannies of Carroll Vista,

from Taneytown. They did their version of Rumpelstiltskin. Young and old enjoyed the show, and afterwards the

youth got to go behind the stage, and hold the puppets. Thank you Ms. Patti for finding the Grannies. Time was also

spent by the children on the playground and a game of ultimate Frisbee.

(continued…) To help celebrate this milestone, the children will play a selection of songs using the Hand Bells at the luncheon. There are a few things needed for this to be successful:

Attend Sunday School – practice will be during music time

– Confirm that your child is available and will be at the luncheon

the number of children determines the songs that can be played – to be sure that the performers are comfortable with the music

Please advise if your child can participate in the program at the luncheon on November 10th. RSVP to Susan Fleming at 443.744.6511 or susanf795@gmailcom. Similar to our new Sunday School Registration Form, you can also submit your response by using this link: https://forms.gle/gkLczsp7mLDEMySu7

Youth Sunday Message from EP3-20 (our friend from 2019 Vacation Bible School!)

Families are an important part of the life, mission and ministry at St Paul’s. Especially the children! We welcome children and all their energy and enthusiasm! Youth are part of our church and we want them to actively participate in worship. So to help accomplish that, the 1st Sunday of each month (Oct – May) is Youth Sunday! We collect non-perishable items for NESAP Food Pantry and the youth have different roles throughout the service. To allow time to review and practice the readings, the Lectors are scheduled in advance. The other tasks (Head Usher, Greeter, Offering...etc) are assigned that morning – please arrive by 8:50am. There is something for all ages! The schedule for the first four Sundays is listed below. If you want to read on one of the four remaining Sundays, then let us know! Being a Lector is great practice for school reports and presentations! We hope you come to our Youth Sundays and be involved in the worship service. Attending church services help your child’s spiritual education. Also, coming to our Youth Sundays is just one way to show support for our Youth Program. This is a great time to invite friends and family to join you at St. Paul’s! We appreciate ideas and suggestions for other possible ways to include children during the service. We hope that being a part of the service will give them more connection with the worship experience. We want all children to feel comfortable and welcomed.

October 2019 – January 2020 Youth Sunday Lectors If you are not able to read on your scheduled weekend, please find a replacement and let the ‘report to’ person know.

Remember to bring a canned good donation for the Food Pantry – one of the Youth Sunday tasks is for the children to take NESAP donations to the altar with the offering and gifts.

On November 10th, we will collect a 2nd offering for Farmers & Hunters Feeding the Hungry (FHFH).

OUR STORY "For I was hungry and you gave me meat, I was thirsty and you gave me drink..."

Matthew Chapter 25

I was driving down a Virginia highway in late September 1997 to meet with some friends. We were planning to clear a little brush at the farm where we hunt and

celebrate the landowner's birthday with a barbecue. About five miles before turning down the gravel farm lane I spotted a woman standing by her car with the trunk open. I was a little late and tempted not to stop. I'm glad I did.

From her dress and the appearance of her car it seemed she was not doing well. When I asked if her car was broken she said, "No could you please help me over here beside these bushes.’’ What was waiting for me over beside those bushes? Hesitantly, I followed until I spotted a fat but slightly battered 6 point buck beside those bushes. She slowly asked , "Could you please help me put it in my trunk?"

When I asked if she had hit it with her car she said, "No." Next I explained that unless she reported the deer to the State Police or a Wildlife Officer she could be issued a citation for transporting an untagged deer. She looked into my eyes and slowly answered, "I don't care...my kids and me are hungry." Too much talk and too little action...we loaded the deer into her trunk.

As she closed the lid of her trunk I asked one last question. "Would you like me to field dress it for you?" Her reply answered all, "No, since my husband left, me and my kids are gettin' good at it... and they don't bleed all over my trunk anymore." Standing there as she drove away I knew I had just looked into the eyes of Jesus.

OUR MISSION Inspired by a passion for the outdoors and compassion for the needy, Farmers and Hunters Feeding the Hungry (FHFH) is committed to addressing America's hunger problem in a unique and relevant way. Established in 1997, FHFH enables hunters and farmers in states nationwide to provide nutritious meat to feed the hungry of their communities.

HOW FHFH WORKS FARMERS and HUNTERS

Hunters in some parts of the country are able to harvest more deer than they can eat or share with their friends and family. Farmers are issued management permits to reduce deer numbers that are damaging their crop yields. Some also have livestock they are willing to donate.

MEAT PROCESSORS Farmers and hunters are invited to donate their deer, other big game, or livestock to inspected, approved meat processors that participate with FHFH. Individuals, businesses, churches, clubs and foundations make contributions to FHFH to help cover the costs of processing, packaging and freezing the meat.

FOOD BANKS and FEEDING MINISTRIES This nutritious, low fat, high protein meat is then given to community agencies such as church pantries, church feeding ministries, the Salvation Army, community food banks, emergency assistance programs, Rescue Missions, children's homes to distribute or serve to their clients.

FHFH CAN HELP Many church feeding programs and soup kitchens tell us that fresh meat is one of the hardest commodities to acquire due to its high cost ($3 - $5 per pound). Since venison is low in fat, naturally nutritious and costs about

$0.25 per serving, it is a perfect low cost substitute for other meats. By

supporting FHFH, you provide the help needed to create a bridge between donated venison (a renewable food

resource), and the hungry within our communities.

FHFH is a non-profit 501c3 organization (EIN: 52-2151919)
