FR. BAKAS TO BE HONORED BY ARMENIAN CHURCH
His Eminence Archbishop Hovnan Derderian has announced
that our own Fr. John Bakas will be honored for his ministry
and general outreach to the community on December 4th at
7:00pm at St. Leon Armenian Cathedral, 3325 N. Glenoaks
Blvd., Burbank, CA 91504.
Our Saint Sophia choir will be singing a number of our Greek
Orthodox hymns, joined by the St. Leo Armenian choir.
Please attend this unique event, as we celebrate common
traditions with our Armenian brothers and sisters. As we say
here in our Byzantine Latino Quarter, “We are each angels
with one wing and we can only fly embracing one another.

We Appreciate You All
To my brothers and sisters in Christ the Lord,
We extend our deepest thanks for all of your efforts in
making our LA Greek Fest a great event. Indeed we are
extremely grateful for the time offered by our faithful
volunteers, the financial contributions made by our
generous donors, and the publicity extended by our social
media experts.
This year’s event was a success in a number of ways. Our
patrons greatly enjoyed the vocal talents of Father John
Bakas and our musicians, the home cooked dishes of our
parishioners, the delicious foods offered by the kitchen
staff of John Kopatsis, and the informative tours offered in
our beloved Cathedral by our clergy and volunteers.
Good Christian stewards are more precious than vaults of
rubies; more valuable than mountains of gold. Thank you
again for your service to the Lord and His Church.
We will be hosting a Volunteer Appreciation Day Sunday,
November 25. Please RSVP by email Jessica
[email protected] or call Vickie 310-279-3722.
In Christ the Lord,
The Clergy of St. Sophia Greek Orthodox Cathedral and
Parish Council

As we start the new liturgical year, I would like to remind
everyone that the choir is always looking for new people to
join our ministry!
Do you sing? Did you once sing in college or high school?
Did you play an instrument? Do you find yourself singing
along during liturgy? If you love to sing, we welcome you!
Although there are a number of experienced singers who
have committed to membership in the group, you do not
necessarily have to be a trained singer or musician to sing with
us. Our primary purpose for existence is spiritual – we strive
to glorify God with our melodic prayer. The choir at Saint
Sophia is a ministry that has been a tradition that goes back
prior to the opening of the cathedral in 1952. We continue
this ministry tradition by singing at our Divine Liturgy every
Sunday, Holy Week services, presenting an annual Christmas
Concert (Dec. 2 this year!) and participating in special projects
as they come up.
But...I don’t know Greek!
While we are a Greek Orthodox Church, we sing at least two
Liturgies a month completely in English and the music in
Greek is also written in phonetics.
If you are interested, please contact Choir director Jim
Kollias at 714-337-7352 or [email protected]
