Basic Definitions

Definition (Group Action)

A group action of G on a set S is a map G× S −→ S which satisfies thefollowing axioms:

a. For any s ∈ S , e · s = s.

b. For any g , g′ ∈ G and s ∈ S , (gg ′) · s = g · (g ′ · s).

Definition (Orbit)

Let group G act on a set S. For any x ∈ X , the orbit of x is the set

Ox = {y ∈ X | ∃ g ∈ G s.t. g · x = y} .

Definition (Stabilizer)

Let group G act on a set S. For any x ∈ X , the stabilizer of x is thesubgroup of G

Gx = {g ∈ G | g · x = x} .Sally(Tingting) Bao (Mentor: Xiyuan Wang) SL2(Z) May 1st, 2019 3 / 15

Group Action of SL2(Z) on the upper half plane

The special linear group,

SL2(Z) =

{(a bc d

): a, b, c, d ∈ Z, det

(a bc d

)= 1

}.

The ‘upper half plane’,

H̄ = H ∪Q ∪ {∞}, where H = {x + iy | y > 0}.

Now, we can define an action of SL2(Z) on H̄ by(a bc d

)· z :=

az + b

cz + d, z ∈ H̄.

Group Action of SL2(Z) on the upper half plane

To check this is a group action,

(a) If Im(z) > 0, then Im(

az+bcz+d

)= ad−bc|cz+d|2 Im(z) = 1

|cz+d|2 Im(z) > 0.

(b) SL2(Z)× H̄ −→ H̄ is a group action.

Let z ∈ H̄ and

(a bc d

),

(e fg h

)∈ SL2(Z).

(i)

(1 00 1

)· z = z

(ii)

(a bc d

Fundamental Domain F

Suppose we have a group action of G on S .

Definition

A fundamental domain F is a subset of S which contains exactly onepoint of each these orbits.

Fundamental Domain F

Back to our example that the group SL2(Z) acts on H, we claim

F = {∞}∪{z ∈ H̄ | −1

2≤ Re(z) <

1

2if |z | > 1; Re(z) ≤ 0 if |z | = 1}

is a fundamental domain.

Fundamental Domain F

Q: How to prove F is a fundamental domain?

(a) Show that, for any z ∈ H, there exists a point x ∈ Oz, such thatx ∈ H.

(b) Show that, for any z1, z2 ∈ F , Oz1 6= Oz2 .
