PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE
Dear Parents and Guardians,
Happy Holidays!! I appreciate all of our parents and students
that attended our Principal’s Talk Story (Community Meeting
#1) on December 1. We shared our STRIVE HI status,
WASC Accreditation timeline, and the development process
for our academic plan. We also shared how iReady, a
differentiation instruction program, can be used to increase
achievement in language arts and math. We will be having
another Community meeting in March, more information will be
forthcoming.
Our winter recess will begin on Thursday, December 22 through January 6. School will resume on Monday,
January 9, 2017. The school’s office will remain open during winter recess from 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
Monday through Friday, except on holidays. The second quarter and first semester will end on December 21,
2016. Your child’s 2nd
quarter report card will be sent home on January 25, 2017.
I would like to take this opportunity to wish all of the Salt Lake Elementary School Ohana a very Merry
Christmas and a Happy New Year! Please enjoy a safe and joyous holiday season.

PROMOTING A SAFE AND HEALTHY CAMPUS
STUDENTS ON CAMPUS AFTERSCHOOL
We are concerned about the safety for the large number of students remaining on campus well after 2:30p (MTThF/1:30 p.m. (Ws) on
a daily basis. The school office closes at 4:00 p.m. In order to prevent unnecessary stress, please communicate with your
families/friends should there be a change with regular transportation routines. Again, THERE IS NO SUPERVISION AFTER
SCHOOL. We have experienced incidences of theft, injuries and misbehavior among these students. For the safety of students, the
Honolulu Police Department will be called as a last resort when students are left behind unattended beyond the school day and
unsuccessful attempts to contact parents have been made. Kama’aina Kids continues to accept applications for their afterschool
program.
PLAYGROUND EQUIPMENT
For safety reasons, students are not allowed on the playground equipment after school unsupervised. Adult supervision by a parent or
guardian is required for playground equipment use.
TRAFFIC SAFETY
Please remember to practice safe driving while dropping off and picking up your child. Be aware of students in the vicinity when
driving near our school. Your child should be dropped off in a safe area (curbside) to prevent any accidents. Please be patient and
courteous toward other parents as they are also dropping off or picking up their child on campus. Curb area fronting the school office
is a drop off/pick up zone only. Please do not park or leave your car unattended along the main driveway and please SLOW
DOWN. Mahalo!
GIRL SCOUTS HELPING TO MAKE SURE OUR STORM DRAINS ARE CLEAR
On Saturday, December 3, Girl Scout Troops
100 & 286 volunteered their time to service
Salt Lake Elementary by sweeping and
clearing out storm drains drains on our
campus. These young girls understand how
important it is to give back to the community.

PROMOTING A SAFE AND HEALTHY CAMPUS - continued SALT LAKE DOLPHINS SCHOOLWIDE BULLY-FREE CAMPAIGN
At Salt Lake Elementary, our Positive Behavior Support team meets to plan and implement activities and projects to create a safe and positive learning environment. One of the activities was allowing our students to write an original pledge against bullying.
Four groups of writers were the winners of the Dol-friends Pledge Contest. The eight student authors decided that the final pledge would be a combination of the four winning entries. The students deconstructed each pledge and chose the two lines they liked the best. These lines were put together, and voilà! New Dolfriend Pledge!
The winners are: Kiana
Credo, Lanson Do,
Vaughn Osurman, Yasu
Ragasa, Jezarie Rio,
Xiaonan Trinh, Nathan
Yang, and Anthony
Zhong.
Congratulations to them
for excellent teamwork!
Salt Lake Dol-friends Grow Gratitude Trees As 2016 comes to an end, we have much to be thankful for here at Salt Lake! In November and December, classrooms are encouraged to make a "Gratitude Tree" showcasing what they were thankful for. Many students were grateful for their family, teachers, and 'ono food!
Special thanks to our PBS Bully-Free Committee (Counselor Laura Willcox,
Ms. Davalos, Mr. Meyer, Ms. Sisco, and intern Miss Ashley) for planning
activities for our students to promote friendship and kindness!

I pledge to be a Salt Lake Dol-friend. I will use the GLOs to be responsible. I will use the Habits of Mind to be respectful. I pledge that no one will be bullied or left out. I will be safe with my friends and my surroundings. I will be honest and trustworthy towards others and myself. Keep trying! Be yourself! Be a Dolfriend!

SALT LAKE ROBOTICS DISTRICT TOURNAMENT
This year we had 2 robotics teams, the Super Turtle Squad and the
Animals Activity Association. They participated in the FLL
Robotics District Tournament on November 11, 2016 at Kalakaua
Middle School. They were challenged with researching a problem
about animals and designing a solution. They also designed, built
and programmed a robot to complete missions.
The Super Turtle Squad won for overall robot design and the
Animal Activity Association placed in the top 10 of the robot
competition. Their success is attributed to their ability to be
complex thinkers, community contributors, effective
communicators and quality producers.
Let's give them a high frenzy for their hard work and dedication as
a team. Special thanks to advisors, Ms. Bulagay and Mr. Okumura.
