Joseph V.
Birthday: 10/2000 Grade in School: 3rd Heritage: Native American
ALL BOY, is the best way to describe this friendly kid. Joseph is a very athletic child who loves football but enjoys anything played with a ball. He would do very well and is looking forward to someday playing on a sports team. An intelligent guy, Joseph likes to tinker, draw, fi gure things out, learn new things, and play with LEGOS. When Joseph feels relaxed and comfortable in a situation, his silly side seems to come out. When this happens Joseph very much enjoys this “hang-out” time. He is a very observant kid who happens to notice little details in things. Some of Joseph’s current interests are animals and Transformers.

Greetings! We wanted to thank everyone who contributed to the success of our very 1st Annual Utah Foster Care Foundation Symposium held April 21st and 22nd in Midway. We had a great turnout and enjoyed several presenters’ views on trauma and attachment. Foster parents attending were eligible for three hours on Wednesday afternoon and six hours on Thursday to be credited towards licensure renewal. Clinicians were also able to obtain 9 CEU’s toward their licensure renewals.
Dr. Doug Goldsmith from the Children’s Center was the keynote
speaker. His presentation, “Attachment in Perspective: Keeping the Big Picture in View,” included case studies as well as grounded ideas of how to help families struggling with attachment and trauma issues. We want to thank him for his time and expertise and received numerous evaluations thanking him for all he shared. Foundation trainers Liz Rivera, MS, Les Harris, LCSW, Mick Woolsey, LCSW, and Nancy Zelenak, MSC explored other areas of attachment. Topics included Discipline with Traumatized Children, Reactive Attachment Disorder, Secondary Trauma & Foster Parents and Matters of the Heart from Children in Care.
We look forward to next year’s Symposium and hope you can join us!

Utah Foster/Adoptive Families Association Update
UFAFA is coming to a region near you!
Correction: UFAFA is coming to YOUR region!
We want all regions of the state to feel that they are represented by Utah Foster/Adoptive Families Association (UFAFA) and their needs are addressed. We felt that creating regional committees that are modeled after and report to the executive committee would be the best way to accomplish this goal. These committees would coordinate various endeavors in each region that would help fulfi ll the purposes of UFAFA. We need volunteers to staff these regional committees!
We are also looking for volunteers to create and staff “resource centers” throughout the state! Northern Region has a great one that is supervised by the Utah Foster Care Foundation. It has been such a success that we would like to spread it to all other regions. Basically, it is a place
where donated clothes and other items are sorted, stored and distributed (by appointment) to foster/adoptive families in need of the items.
Please check out our website (www.myufafa.com) to get more details on these Volunteer Opportunities.
ALSO – we have emailed questionnaires about child welfare to all candidates that are running for state legislative positions. To see how the candidates in YOUR district responded, please email Jenn @ [email protected] with your voting district (found on your voter registration card – there will be two, a house and a senate) as the subject line.
Thanks for all you do every day to make the world a better place!

Foster/Adoptive Dad of the Year Runs for Kids in Care
By Tina Porter, UFCF Retention Specialist, SLV Region
We would like to congratulate foster parent Mike Millgate who was chosen as the Salt Lake Region 2010 Foster Dad of the Year.
Mike will join other winners from across the state at an award ceremony at the Utah Foster Care Foundation’s Chalk Art Festival on Sat., June 19th at noon at The Gateway. Everyone is welcome to attend and help us show our appreciation for the exceptional job these dad’s do on a daily basis.
Mike was not only nominated by his family members, but also family members of the children he cares for, along with his wife. Here are some excerpts from those nominations:
“Mike truly cares about helping children, and he shows it every day. It was his idea for us to become foster parents nearly two years ago, because his heart is so big and he wants to give every child he can a piece of it. Mike is continually trying to fi nd ways to help Utah’s kids, and he puts those desires into action. He is an example of what true dedication is, and our two foster sons have truly loved and adored him.”
“He knows that he can’t personally help each child, but he is searching for ways to do it anyway. He has decided to run his fi rst marathon this summer, and has set up a website (http://www.run2100.com/) to try and raise support and funding for the Utah Foster Care system in his name. He loves in a big way! He is a great example of what a father should be. Our son’s fi rst words were Da-Da and Mike is still his hero.”

Continued from page 5
“Mike has all of the important qualities of being a great Dad, but he is also able to demonstrate them in action not just words. Mike participates in all aspects of caring for the children who have come through his home.”
“I admire him for his willingness to give his whole heart, without reserve, to a child who may one day leave him. Mike rejoices over every triumph and gets right down on the child’s level and makes them feel good about themselves and what they can do to
contribute to the activity. He lets his child see, by example, what kind of a man he is and never holds back when it comes to fatherhood. I have never seen a man who gives more of himself to fatherhood than Mike does.”
“Mike gives his all to everything he does and when I see him pick up his son and cuddle him close, with love written all over his face, I feel so touched to know that he loves these children without end, through that love, he is teaching them that the world can be a safe place.”

“I knew what I wanted to do and I am in exactly the right place doing what I love best,” says Naomi Martinsen.
Utah Division of Child and Family Services (DCFS) and Utah Foster Care Foundation are very proud to honor Naomi as 2010 Foster Mother of the Year. This award recognizes the valuable role mothers play in nurturing our children and supporting families. Foster moms in the Salt Lake Valley do a fantastic job, and Naomi represents them well!
Our resource families are everyday people, willing and able to open their homes to provide children with safe, supportive and loving e n v i r o n m e n t s . The children the
Martinsens have fostered are thriving with Naomi’s support and devotion to them. They now have stability in their lives that they didn’t before. She’s one of the most caring, loving and giving people I know.

Attachment and Trauma Series
Two of the most common issues that children in care bring are a history of trauma and compromised attachment. These two series of three classes each will be offered on an ongoing basis.
Trauma & Development Series:
Class 3: Preventing Secondary Trauma June 29th; 6-9pmLiving with a traumatized child can affect other members of the family. We’ll discuss how this occurs and how to minimize it.
Attachment Series:
Class 1:Introduction to AttachmentJuly 19th; 6-9pmClass one is a basic overview of attachment theory and its application to children in foster care.
Class 2:Disorganized AttachmentAugust 30th; 6-9pmOf all the attachment outcomes, disorganized attachment is the most problematic, and probably the most common, for children in care. We’ll discuss what it is and how to best support children with a compromised attachment history.
