    A BETTER CARWASH

SALUTE! Get the inside story on local businesses and organizations in your community2West

    February 14, 2013

Car washes are every-where! In fact, Colorado weather is terrible for cars which means there are probably more car wash businesses in Colorado than other states. How does a car wash business suc-ceed when every gas sta-tion on every corner has a machine that squirts water on a car? Jim Beetham is the owner of two car washes that do well in this tough econo-my because he believes that to succeed in any business, one must simply stand out as doing a better job!

The locations for A BET-TER CARWASH are quite busy in Golden and Arvada and, in fact, they were voted as BEST OF JEFFCO in 2011 and recognized year

after year as a local favor-ite. That was not easy consid-ering that there are probably a couple hundred carwashes in the county. So, Better is more than just part of the name, says Mr. Beetham. It means that we actually must do everything better than the others in order to live up to our claim...and our name. The facilities must be cleaner, well lighted, and maintained better than the

rest. The equipment must be only the very best that money can buy. The chemi-cals that clean cars must be the best that technology of-fers. The water used must be heated, softened and fi ltered through reverse os-mosis. Everything must be as earth friendly as possi-ble. If something is ever less than the best, you should be able to call and reach the owner anytime, 24/7, in order to be satisfi ed. Your vehicle must be cleaner and you must be happier than if you went anywhere else. It means a lot!

Henry John Heinz once said that To do a common thing uncommonly well brings success, and those words have led to a philoso-phy applied to car washing at A BETTER CARWASH. Get your car good and dirty driving in Colorado and then stop by one of the 2 lo-cations that will get it clean-er better than anywhere else.

    Better car washing brings success

29 years ago in 1984, Ap-plewood Quality Builders started their business in the general contracting indus-try, providing mostly remod-eling work for residential customers, commercial ten-ant fi nish, general roofi ng replacement and concrete work. Applewood Qual-ity Builders continued in this area of work until 1993, when they were contracted to install RTD bus shelters throughout the metro-Den-ver area. The RTD shelters kept the company busy for several years and Apple-wood Quality Builders de-cided in 1998 to scale down the volume of residential and commercial projects.

The construction business that they decided to con-tinue with was the concrete related projects.

In 2000, Applewood Qual-ity Builders took over the property maintenance for its sister company, Applewood Offi ce Park, and to this day handle all the ongoing ten-ant fi nish, offi ce remodeling work, and building opera-tions for several commercial buildings.

Today, Applewood Quality Builders does only concrete work such as concrete drive-ways, sidewalks, steps, ga-rage fl oors, basement fl oors and concrete structural re-pair. Applewood Quality Builders has the equipment to do the excavation, prepa-ration, forming and pour-ing for any type of concrete related work. They also do color and patterned stamp concrete work.

Addenbrooke Classical Academy is excited to open as a new Jeffco Charter School the Fall of 2013 that combines musical disci-plines with rigorous college preparatory academics; a unique option for Jefferson County, having researched driven results.

Addenbrooke Classical Academy will provide in-struction at both the junior high and high school lev-els. Music instruction will be blended with technology and academics, consisting of Core Knowledge and the Classical model. Further-more, Addenbrooke Clas-sical Academy will develop and implement educational programs that are directed toward developing high ethical standards, along

with building social skills and upright character. The emphasis on good charac-ter will further the students academic skills which, in turn, will help to build the necessary competencies of self-esteem, respect for themselves and others, and personal discipline. Bal-anced combinations of these skills equip students with the ability to choose wisely. These expectations, though high, can and will be achieved. Students, when expectations are high, will generally be equal to the task at hand, as long the ex-pectations are realistic and logical.

Addenbrooke Classical Academy will strive to culti-vate a thriving student body that is active and longing to learn. Most courses will be presentation-oriented to display actual learning and development of thought through seminars and musi-cal performances.

Addenbrooke will part-ner with iSchool to become a SMART School campus. iPads will be provided for each student with total in-tegration into the instruc-

tion and curriculum of the Academy. This will be in conjunction with and guid-ance from iSchool. Each teacher and student will be taught how to integrate the iPad into the curriculum so that the iPad will not be sim-ply an attraction or gimmick for students, but will also be used to close the achieve-ment gap between students and assist in differentiation. The campus in the iSchool company name refers to each person adopting the technology and hopping on board. It has been our expe-rience that when everyone in the building jumps in with both feet and the technology just works every time, the adoption rates and overall value of a technology transi-tion is greatly enhanced. We are truly excited for the fu-ture of Addenbrooke Classi-cal Academy and the oppor-tunities that are before us.

We begin accepting en-rollment applications for the second window of en-rollment on February 19th and will continue through August 31st.

Weve got walls fi lled with Best of bar-becue awards (too many to count!), but its the smil-ing faces on our customers that really makes us happy. Thank you to all of our loyal Bennetts customers for your kind wishes and support af-ter the fi re at our Arvada restaurant last month. We

2012 Home Performance Contractor of the YearBizFACTSBestway Insulation Broomfi eldFounded: 1976Owner: Debbie Weingardt

Bestway Insulation has been in Business since 1976. We are a company that always experiments to get the highest results in the state. We strive to educate our em-ployees to all become Building Per-formance Institute educated and certifi ed. We feel by education and experimentation we can give your home the best results. I have just recently worked with NREL and the Department of Energy to de-velop the New National Standards of Insulation and Weatherization using our techniques.

We have developed methods of compressing fi berglass in walls for the 70s, 80s, 90s, 2000 homes and re-blowing it with cellulose to stop wind penetration. We can even do this on a brand new home and get their bills 40-50% reduced. We have proved this numerous times with the energy makeover contests with Xcel and the Energy Effi cient

Building Coalition. We have do-nated, redoing over 11 homes in donations to the community to show testing scores. For the Easter Seals homes in Empire, Colorado, there were 40 of us in the Auditing, Insulation, Solar and Air Sealing fi elds that went up there to donate our time to make the cabins more comfortable for the kids and fuel effi cient for the organization. Each company was given two homes to do. Where the others were getting 50 to 200 CFM reduction, we got 1300 and 1500 CFM reduction on the cabins we did. In other words, we reduced their natural air chang-es per hour hugely.

We are always striving to give back to the community, but most-ly to our planet. Thus our slo-gan SAVING OUR PLANET ONE HOUSE AT A TIME.

In the past with new construc-tion contractors it has always been how fast you can insulate a home and take whatever short cuts you can without getting caught.

I am not that way because you need to be slower and precise to do the job correctly and make the home energy effi cient so we stop heating up the planet and wasting energy.

We have been to several Global Climate Conferences to help slow

down the heating of this planet if possible. We were one of two com-panies invited to Arnold Schwar-zeneggers in California and lis-tened to people all over the world talk about the droughts in their countries and though we cant do it all at least we are making a dent in Colorado.

We are a family business that re-fuses to be bought out by corpora-tions that would ruin what we are trying to do. Its not all about the money. Its about the results we are getting. My two sons will take over the business sometime in the future to make sure that homes are going to be done correctly. I be-lieve we have instilled quality not quantity and know how important air sealing is, the best and proper materials for each job, and the im-

    portance of knowing building sci-ence.

When asked to give a bid on in-sulating the governors mansion, I was told there was a 2000 sq. ft. at-tic to be done. I was also told that no one could live in the mansion during the winter, but the Ritters wanted to. I knew the attic had to be much bigger than 2000 sq. ft. and the walls went straight up. It wasnt an A-frame home. I looked outside the box. I asked if we could bring in infrared cameras and blower door and with the help of Nancy Kelloggs blower door and camera, we found a 4000 sq. ft. at-tic space that was hiding behind a wall in the main attic. We got past that and found three other add-on attics. We found an elevator shaft, two dumb waiter shafts and four

4x4 chases that went down four stories. We also found 250 sq. ft. of chases behind the knee walls. I was told that the Ritters would use up to 14 blankets each to watch TV to keep from freezing and they had up to 85-mile-an-hour winds blowing through their home with all the wind tunnels we found. In order to sleep, they would have to turn their electric blankets up to 10 and pile fi ve regular blankets on that in order to make it through the night.

I bet Governor Ritters daughter that she wouldnt need those blan-kets when we got done.

I won the bet. We reduced the governors mansions utility bills 10 fold.

In 1945, Joe and Ruby Meyer moved from Nebras-ka and settled in Golden where they bought a hard-ware store from E.G. Son.

It was then that the Meyer Hardware legacy began. Their daughter and son-in-law, Marilyn and Harold Schaefer, eventually joined them and helped to create one of the best hardware stores in Metro Denver. To-day, the Schaefers sons, Steve and Jim are carrying on the family tradition. Jim works as a salesperson, and Steve is President of the Cor-poration.

After expanding over eight times since 1945, the busi-ness now operates out of a

21,000 square foot building. Customer service has always been Meyer Hardwares most important competi-tive advantage. It employs knowledgeable and friendly people and maintains a staff of 20 with a total of 355 years of service. As Steve states, We pride ourselves on be-ing a service-oriented store. If you cant fi nd something here, we will try to order it for you.

In late 2012 the city con-ducted the citys fi rst-ever Business Walk visiting al-most 200 businesses. The walk gauged the pulse of business in Wheat Ridge. Four questions were asked that are being used for re-tention, expansion and at-traction efforts.

Hows business? How do you think busi-

ness will be in the next 12-24 months?

What do you like about doing business in Wheat Ridge?

How can business be made better?

The 2-person teams can-vassed every part of the city

including retail, service and industrial business sectors. The teams provided the business with a package of materials containing infor-mation on city, county, state and other business assis-tance programs.

How is Business?88% indicated that busi-

ness is at least good or steady. Of those businesses that reported that business is poor, a variety of reasons were cited but generally re-lated to a shift in consumer spending, a lack of custom-ers, and the general econo-my of the U.S.

How will business be in the next 12-24 months?

75% stated they believe that business will get better over the next year or two. The optimism related to im-provement in the economy, housing starts, better plan-ning, and even the local, state and national elections.

What do you like about doing business in Wheat Ridge?

46% indicated it was the location. The second most common single response was the community of Wheat Ridge. Many own-ers live in Wheat Ridge and plan to stay in the area for an extended period of time. Clientele was the third most-mentioned response. 20% of respondents listed more than one reason they liked doing business in Wheat Ridge.

How can business be made better?

Creating a healthy busi-ness environment and working along-side our partners such as the Wheat Ridge Business Association, Wheat Ridge 2020, Wheat Ridge Business District and the Wheat Ridge Housing Authority is making Wheat Ridge a premier location for business. In Arvada, the sentiment I love that place! is said often and proudly. Arvada is a community unlike many others. Arvada consistently competes with the larger metropolitan areas in the areas of business and commerce but retains its small-town charm that other suburbs cant replicate.

Thinking along those lines, and wanting to develop a stronger way to market and promote our beautiful city, the City of Arvada and the Arvada Chamber of Commerce are pleased to welcome the newly created Arvada Visitors Center (AVC). The AVC will serve as a resource for residents of Arvada and those guests visiting the area. Located in Historic Olde Town Arvada at 7305 Grandview Avenue, the AVC is primed to be a one-stop

shop for all activities, events and promotions happening in the area. The AVC employees will be able to provide recommendations about where to shop, eat and play in Denvers premier northwest suburb.

The decision by the Arvada City Council to support the Arvada Visitors Center demonstrates an investment in promoting information about our great community to visitors who will discover some of the assets that make Arvada such a great place to explore, said Mayor Marc Williams.

The AVC will offer a wealth of information (free of charge) to include maps, brochures, directories, local menus and special discounts and offers from area merchants. Secondarily, the Visitors Center will be working with local businesses and organizations to ensure Arvada is appropriately represented and positioned to attract major events, tournaments and competitions in the coming years. Relationships will be developed to create new

partnerships and promotions on a statewide and regional level to raise the overall level of awareness of our city and encourage guests to visit.

The AVC will also be managing a website and social media outlets to keep the information fl ow current. The new website, visitarvada.org, is set to launch in February.

We look forward to connecting with all local retailers, restaurants, and organizations. We encourage local businesses to stop by and say hello. The more we know about what exciting events and activities are taking place around town, the stronger the Visitors Center will be, said Jean Gordon, Executive Director.

The Arvada Visitors Center is open 8:30 a.m. 5:00 p.m. Monday Friday and 9:00 a.m. 3:00 p.m. on the weekends. For more information about the Arvada Visitors Center, contact Jean Gordon at 720-898-3380 or [email protected]. In the increasingly frag-mented media world, news-papers reach the highest-quality citizens. Despite the notion that newspapers are dead or dying, commu-nity newspapers with their hyper-local news, enjoy a sustainable readership. Residents report reading their local community paper from cover to cover, and fi nd the news more relevant than in bigger metro papers.

Colorado Community Media embraces all things local.

We are nearly one year into our new venture, combining 22 Denver area community newspapers and media sites covering more than 185,000 residences. Often, our pa-pers reach readers that big daily papers do not, creating a better and more profi table response for our advertisers, large and small.

In 2012, our publications won more than 90 awards in the Colorado Press Associa-tion Better Newspaper Con-test. Better content is draw-ing more readers to both our print and online outlets.

The Arvada Center for the Arts and Humanities is one of the na-tions largest multidisciplinary cultural centers welcoming over 350,000 visitors a year to its 144,000 sq. ft. building. With award-win-ning theater, visual art exhibitions, outdoor amphitheater and classes for children and adults alike, the Arvada Center is recognized as a premiere venue for arts, culture, and education in the Rocky Moun-tain region. In recent years, the Ar-vada Center expanded its range of programming and regional base of support through creative collabo-rations and strategic alignments with cultural, civic and commer-cial organizations throughout the state. The Centers cooperative business approach has been dem-onstrated throughout the entire

organization, highlighting part-nerships in the Centers theaters, galleries, educational division and outdoor summer programming.

The Arvada Center is one of the largest employers in the City of Arvada operating with an annual $10M budget and employing over 300 people on a year round and seasonal basis. From administra-tion to education, visual and per-formance, many artists, actors, teachers and staff have helped the Center become one of the pre-miere venues for arts employment.

Coming into 2013, exciting changes are happening around the Center. The 526 seat Main Stage, home to award winning musicals upgraded with new theater seats offering better cushioning and support. The response has been terrifi c as patrons settled into an-other great season of theater.

The Centers Main Gallery is go-ing through a transition by replac-ing existing carpeting with pol-ished concrete fl ooring, making the area more aesthetically pleas-ing.

The most signifi cant change is the announcement of a new Ex-

ecutive Director. In February, the staff will welcome Philip C. Sneed to the top position at the Center. Sneed has an extensive arts back-ground, most recently serving as Producing Artistic Director at Col-orado Shakespeare Festival.

The Arvada Center provides the best in arts education with over 900 classes and well regarded spring and summer camps. The popular childrens theater program is cur-rently offering No Dogs Allowed which will be seen by as many as 1,000 school children daily. Many students stay after the show to par-ticipate in an Arts Day program - a fun, educational hands on experi-ence that enhances their theater experience. In 2011 more than 35,000 children participated in Arts Day or an Outreach program that goes directly into schools.

The Arvada Center Education division includes integrated pro-gramming that provides young artists the opportunity to receive advance training. The Drama Academy offers students instruc-tion in all aspects of theater arts. Last fall, the Center launched a new initiative, the Arvada Center

Theater Academy Company, an in-tensive program offering students the opportunity to work alongside professional educators.

Young dancers eagerly sign up for training in ballet, jazz and modern dance offered through the Dance Academy and perform in spring recitals each year. Aspir-ing musicians study with the Front Range Youth Symphony Orchestra, an enhancement to school music programs offering advanced train-ing in symphony and chamber orchestras and concert strings. Students perform three annual concerts on the Main Stage.

The Arvada Center is recognized for the quality of its shows created at the Center and was recently awarded Best Season for a Theatre Company from the Colorado The-atre Guild. The theaters popular series averages 5,700+ season sub-scribers. The current season con-tinues with the musical, Man of La Mancha, followed by the hilarious play Dividing the Estate and clos-ing with the whodunit musical comedy Curtains in July. The up-coming season will be announced in spring and promises to be fi lled

with great selections for all theater enthusiasts.

The Galleries at the Center offer some of the best visual art in the region and the current exhibition is no exception. Art of the State, a juried exhibition of 160 Colorado artists is showing in all three galler-ies (over 10,000 sq. ft.). In April, the 42nd Annual Jefferson Foundation High School Art Exhibition will fea-ture works from Jefferson County high schools.

The Arvada Center is home to the Arvada History Museum. The museum offers the opportunity for visitors to learn about the history of Arvada through its extensive col-lection of artifacts and displays.

The popular CenterFest Sum-mer Series returns to the 1,600 seat amphitheater. CenterFest pro-vides collaborative opportunities to area performing arts groups to perform in a beautiful outdoor set-ting. Concerts will also heat up the amphitheater with national acts produced by Nobody In Particular Presents.

In 1964, Mountain Vista was opened in response to the need for nursing home care in Colorados Wheat Ridge area. Initially, Moun-tain Vista served 90 residents in the newly constructed Health Care Center. Over the years, we have contin-ued to grow in order to meet the needs of the outside community. We have added affordable cottages that of-fer residents all the benefi ts of independent living with-out the hassles of yard work and home maintenance. These one and two bedroom apartments surround a won-derful clubhouse, a hub for activities and social events.

We also offer Assisted Liv-ing care where residents can relax in the privacy of their own apartment or socialize with friends at meals and activities knowing that as-sistance is always available should they need it.

Short term Rehabilita-tion is one of our areas of expertise, offering residents access to physical, occupa-tional and speech therapies. Our newly remodeled Tran-sitional Care Unit (TCU) comes with many amenities, including a new 1400 square foot gym with state-of-the- art equipment as well as private rooms and private dining. All of our rehabilita-tion programs are designed with the goal of getting resi-dents back home as quickly as possible.

Originally created to serve the needs of King Soopers employees, Sooper Credit Union provides convenient and rewarding fi nancial ser-vices to over 450 select em-ployee groups in Colorado, Wyoming, Utah and New Mexico.

Throughout 2012, Sooper Credit Union expanded their product line, adding student loans and emerging as the fi rst solar-garden lender in the country. Additionally, the Mountain West Credit Union Association recog-nized Sooper Credit Union as the Credit Union of the Year for the $100 to $500 mil-lion category. Sooper Credit Union was chosen from a pool of over 40 credit unions

on the basis of fi nancial strength and performance, new services to members, new activities or programs, innovation, and legislative and grassroots advocacy.

In addition to providing its members with conve-nient products and ser-vices, Sooper Credit Union strives to continually serve the communities in which it operates. In 2011, Sooper Credit Union became the title sponsor for the Summer Wine Classic - a wine event that raises money to sup-port Stride. Stride is a Lake-wood nonprofi t that serves over 150 families in Jefferson County. They offer fi nancial, career and education coun-seling to low-income and homeless families. They also provide housing assistance to these families as they help them work to become self-suffi cient and attain middle class status.

According to Mike Litzau, Executive Vice President of Corporate at Sooper Credit Union, the partnership be-

tween Sooper Credit Union and Stride was a perfect match. Strides mission to provide families with servic-es and a personalized plan to attain economic indepen-dence and break the cycle of poverty goes hand in hand with the credit union philosophy. Credit Unions as a whole have a motto of people helping people and thats exactly what Stride is all about.

The Summer Wine Classic is an annual event presented by Stride and Sooper Credit Union. Held at Balistreri Vineyards in Arvada on June 28, 2013, the event offers hors doeuvres, wine tast-ing and the chance to make a difference in the lives of struggling Denver families.
