Definition: A sentence is a group of words that makes a complete

sense.

A sentence always begins with a capital letter.

A sentence always ends with a full stop, question mark or an

exclamation mark.

Note: A group of words that does not make any sense will not be

called a sentence.

Example: Surbhi is an intelligent girl.

It is a sentence as it derives some meaning.

Girl is Surbhi intelligent an.

Though this is a group of words having capital letter in the

beginning and full stop at the end, but still it is not called a

sentence because it does not make any sense.

SENTENCES

Remember: A sentence is not a written line finished in one line

only. A sentence may have many lines or can finish in the middle

Definition: Every sentence has two parts:

1. Subject

2. Predicate

1. Subject: In a sentence, a noun or a pronoun we speak about is called a subject. Example: Eshaani sings well. (Here, Eshaani is a subject.)

2. Predicate: What is said about the subject is called a predicate. Example: Eshaani sings well. (Here, sings well is a predicate.)

Example 1: Just around the corner was the parade.

(Here, the parade is a subject.)

Example 2: The birds are flying in the sky.

(Here, the birds is a subject.)

Example 3: Snow White’s step mother and her step sisters were going to the party. (Here, Snow White’s step mother and her step sisters is a

subject)

Things to Remember: The subject does not always come at the

beginning of the sentence. The subject also includes articles

written before the nouns.

Sometimes, subject is enlarged due to an adjective or a noun

but that will also be counted in the subject.
