Bachelor of Architecture

Academic Dissertation for Bachelor of Architecture I was graduated is the project "Samsen Fire and Rescue Station" ( Marine and Land Rescue Base). My research is about public incidents preparation in Bangkok and Nonthaburi province and design to respond firefighters in an organization and society along the Chao Phraya River and Canals. The reconstruction of the full Samsen Fire and Rescue Station is the result of a needed planning and implementation process to respond the emergency generator. Their new workplace that does not meet its ever simple, especially in “Continuous Service” and “Continuity” for the benefit of the operation. Functional, economic and future-oriented, the new station and firefighters can now work.

INTRODUCTIONINTRODUCTION Since the housing living characteristic along the Chao Phraya River and Canals with high dense of population is likely to create the public incidents any time which we have learned from the his-tory of fire , floods , and also other accidents related to water. The officials, and citizens of Bangkok and peripheral provinces were made aware of the needs of its Fire and Rescue Boat Station. The research found that Samsen Fire and Rescue Station is the most appropriate station to provide fire boats and rescue boats according to the Main Fire and Rescue Department‟s plan. The reason is that the station can go to extinguish fire and rescue people along the waterfront area of Chao Phraya River and Bang-kok Noi Canal that have poor or limited access by land ,and also support the new building parliament for security. The problem that prompted this research project was that Samsen Fire and Rescue Station at present is aging and has not been considered for the further development to respond the future needs of increasing responsibility and to support the surrounding society. Accordingly, the station needs to prepare the act of both marine and land rescue base. The purpose of refurbishment design project was to improve the operational efficiency of Samsen Fire and Rescue Station while regarding to public security.

Page 7: Samsen Fire and Rescue Station

BACKGROUND AND SIGNIFICANCE The living of Siamese Kingdom was related to the Chao Phraya River in which people located their settlements along the prosperous land and used the river for transportation. The tidal direction of river was swirling, which made the transportation inconvenient. The kings realized to solve this problem that canals must have been excavated to create shortcuts of Chao Phraya River. This helped the boat transportation save time. After that the expansion of people was scattered along the canals due to trading, and travelling by boats. When the time passed by the river tide was changed , the canals turned into a river , and the west bank of the river became canals in nowadays.

City plan of housing is disorganized as the people at that time mostly used river transportation and did not considering the access by land. Increasing of population impacted the extension of housing along the river and canals. Waterfront com-munities became crowded , and many houses intruded on some parts of the river and canals made narrow access to get in. Meanwhile living along the Chao Phraya River and Canals could create unexpected public incidents whether caused by nature or human such as fire , flood , and other disasters that cause physical harm to people , or damage to public property , stated from Bangkok Fire and Rescue Department. Thereby, fire boats and rescue boats become crucial to the waterfront city.

Intension

Objective

Thesis quesion- How the function oriented building could offer into specificity to link with surrounding environment ?

- To develop Samsen Fire and Rescue station design that would meet the needs of firefighter’s duty in the future of refurbishment project and give the efficient operations.

- The intention was to place emphasis on the crucial function in respect of security , and also respond to the society around the station.

Analyze in Samsen Fire and Rescue Station

- The whole functions are discriminated against the firefighters , and not in arrangements has led to the point where to design equal facilities.

Practice area ( Drill yard )

The site is situated on the Chao Phraya River that could be flood from the water tide level , therefore the office is on the 2nd floor to avoid the flood problem that occurs every years. On the ground level is a storage area , and apparatus. The vertical circulation is created like a translucent bar penetrated from the upper floors to the ground floor of stair-case and fire tubes. The connection is by a ramp pathway ,and stands for firefighters and visitors for the use of fire drill , and training.

SAMSEN FIRE AND RESCUE STATION RECONSTRUCTION PROJECT

PARK+STATION

A proposal to provide a continuouse space for fire and rescue station , and a park over a station which candirectly access from the neignborhood in Samsen. Bridging ground and elevated promenade at the waterfront.Park bridge can link either side of the hotel , Nurse college , Dormitory , and local people. Firefighters andvisitors can walk onto the sloping roof of the addition , which will be planted to create an ecological atmosphereto fire and rescue station.

UNITY AND PARK OVER A STATION

All the functions radiate around the central area where firefighters stay for the radio call , direct access to the engines by stair , and ramp in the red color. In conclusion, the organization in one build-ing is good to manage , and either ramps or stairs directed to their vehicles which face two sides become convenient and quick for the operation.

When reviewing the design gathered through the station inspections, and interviews, it was clear that they were all in agreement regarding the option in fire station design and construction to use this con-ceptual idea. Meanwhile, the station building design have to respond the functionality for personnel, and save more area to give to the firefighters , and public use of the exercise ,and practice court area. The final design is improved at the end from their aspect.

FINAL DESIGN : CONCEPT RELATIONSHIP PROGRAM , ARCHITECTURAL DRAWINGS

The reconstruction of the full Samsen Fire and Rescue Station is the result of a needed planning and implementation process to respond the emergency generator.

An exploded axonometric diagram shows how the firehouse is designed for the efficiency operation. Because they work as a team , and stay in a same area for waiting radio calls . Therefore, the design of the main station empha-sis on their working in a red oval color of the 2nd floor. All routine facilities embrace this room , and link to the appara-tus floors of vehicles , and equipment depots shown in a green box by circulations of stairs ( yellow ) , lift ( brown ) , and fire tube shaft ( red ). Training room is in the front faces to the Chao Phraya River which is used for scheduling of the team to report for fire chiefs. Upper floors are their break room or bedrooms to stay in a purple color , and fire chiefs‟ bedrooms in a blue color. At the center is a recreation room , open patio allowing natural light to the space. Firefighters can play a pool , watch TV , read books from the shelves. Technology room is provided computers for general contact of organizations. Conceptual axonometric diagram

Vehicle exhaust fumes, found in every fire station, is produced when an diesel engine burns diesel fuel. It is a complex mixture of thousands of gases and particles (soot) containing several toxic air contaminants. These include many known or sus-pected carcinogenic substances. It also contains other harmful pollutants, including nitrogen oxides. In the long term, repeated exposure is as dangerous as being sub-ject to cigarette smoke. The fumes spreads into the areas where firemen eat, sleep and reside. It penetrates the clothes. No wonder cancer rates among firemen are exceptionally high.

During design process, the author consulted with firefighters , and the chief architect who has the experiences to get the recommendation , and improve the design

to have the best one that can respond in reality. The possibility of the governmental project has changed the initial idea to serve more realistic.

Firefighters deal with people life in an emergency time, they are friendly and kind to give the information to this project. The author hopes that this architectural
