The following slides are my team’s version of lesson plans for the math topic of study.

They are shared as suggestions ONLY…please consider sharing your plans on the dropbox...

we’d love to see how other teachers are using the program

We use some of these slides during our lessons to incorporate different math practices as we do number talks to help our students practice on skills they need to develop.

Please adjust and use these plans as you would like or

toss them in the trash HSamuelson

Grade 2 ~ Back To School Formative AssessmentsTime Line: August 4 – August 8, 2014

CCSSM:Operations and Algebraic Thinking2.OA.1. Use addition and subtraction within 100 to solve one- and two-step word problems involving situations of adding to, taking from, putting together, taking apart, and comparing, with unknowns in all positions, e.g., by using drawings and equations with a symbol for the unknown number to represent the problem.Number and Operation in Base Ten2.NBT.5. Fluently add and subtract within 100 using strategies based on place value, properties of operations, and/or the relationship between addition and subtraction.

Mathematical Practices#7-Make sense of problems and preserve in solving them.

Learning Targets*I can choose when to use addition or subtraction in a word problem.*I can represent addition or subtraction word problems using objects, drawings, and equations with unknowns in all positions.*I can add and subtract numbers within 100 with ease by applying strategies (decomposing numbers into tens and ones, using commutative and associative properties) based on the numbers being added subtracted.

Vocabularyreview words from first grade vocabulary for math add in task and craftivity

Math Toolsvarious counting tools as well as 120 chart and red/yellow counters

Procedures and Formative Assessments

Tuesday

Aug. 5

Procedures and Formative AssessmentIf You Take a Mouse to School – read story or listen to video of story. Discuss and allow students to work on activity sheets that go along with story to pre-assess math skills. As students are working on sheets, meet with individuals or small groups to do more assessment of skills such as adding to 10, subtraction to 10, place value knowledge, etc.

WednesdayAug. 6

Procedures and Formative AssessmentIf You Take a Mouse to School – continue with sheets and small group/individual assessments.

Thursday

Aug. 7

Procedures and Formative AssessmentGiraffes Can’t Dance Math Task – read story or listen to video of story and discuss thoughts about math and how different people solve things and see things in different ways. Create a Gerald Giraffe and have student begin to solve the problems using red/yellow chips…discuss how different people had different answers and talk about accountable talk.

FridayAug. 8

Procedures and Formative AssessmentGiraffes Can’t Dance Math Task –continue with Gerald’s craftivity and tasks…students can create a Gerald to hang in hall…variations of how the finished product will look are acceptable.

Gerald the GiraffeMath Tasks

After reading the book, “Giraffes Can’t Dance”

by Giles Andreae, students complete a

craftivity of Gerald that will help them solve math

tasks. HSamuelsonhttp://swampfrogfirstgraders.blogspot.com/

Page 5: Samuelson Aug.4 Math Plans

Create Gerald the Giraffe and manipulate the circle and triangle cut outs on Gerald’s body. Show and discuss solutions to different problems that are projected to read or read outloud.

The last math story is a math task that has the kids creating ten spots on Gerald’s body using the circle and triangle cut outs… (Great for composing and decomposing concepts>)

Students use the D.E.W. to solve the math task as a way of practicing for the CRAs in the future…Draw a model, write an Equation and Write an explanation of how they got their answer as well as describe how they know it is the right answer.

Page 6: Samuelson Aug.4 Math Plans

To prepare for this Craftivity, you’ll need

to pre-cut the giraffe’s body from yellow paper. You can also choose to create templates of

the giraffe’s body for the kids to trace and cut out on their own. Each child will need

10 circles and 10 triangles (both about the size of a quarter). I like to pre-cut the circles and triangle for continuity in size

and shape. However, you could provide templates of the shapes for the

students to trace and cut out on their own

as well.

Page 7: Samuelson Aug.4 Math Plans

Print out one of these

giraffe templates to

create a pattern that

will be the size of an

8X10 sheet of paper to

trace the giraffe body

for the project.

Gerald has some circle spots on his body. He has 3 triangle spots too. He has 8 spots altogether. How many circle spots does Gerald have on his body? Draw the shapes and write an equation.

Gerald has 2 circle spots on his body. He has some triangle spots too. He has 8 spots altogether. How many triangle spots does Gerald have on his body? Draw the shapes and write an equation

Gerald has 4 circle spots on his body. He has 4 triangle spots too. How many spots does Gerald have altogether? Draw the shapes and write an equation.

Gerald has 7 circle spots on his body. He has 1 more triangle spot. How many spots does Gerald have altogether? Draw the shapes and write an equation.

Print and cut out the small

task cards to read during

whole group lessons on how to

best solve the story problem…

Students use the precut circles

and triangles spots as

manipulatives to work out

each problem.

Use dominoes during the first lesson to create a station that can last all quarter…dominoes can be used to create addition and subtraction sentences as well as to search for a certain sum on a domino and record the different choice.
