REMEMBERING RAJA HARISCHANDRA

We must congratulate Prime Minister NarendraModi not only for winning the recent electionswith a thumping majority for himself and his partybut also for the swift action in taking appropriatesteps to give Kashi (otherwise known as Varanasi)a grand face-lift to become the spiritual capital ofthe world and also a project for cleansing watersof the Sacred River Ganga, which he had assuredon the day of filing his nomination as a candidatefrom Varanasi constituency. The very word “Kashi” reminds us of:1. Lord Shiva known as Shri Kashi Vishwanathwho had made this place as His permanentabode making it stand on the tip of His tridentand so remaining indestructible even during thedeluge.2. Mother Goddess Parvati known here asAnnapoorna who had fed Lord Shiva andquenched His insatiable hunger and nowsymbolizing food for everyone in the entireuniverse.3. Mother Ganga, the River Goddess who washesaway all the sins of all the souls who touch evena single drop of her water. And4. Raja Harischandra the well known ruler ofAyodhya who sacrificed every thing for the sakeof honesty and devotion to duties cast on him.Now to tell more about Raja Harischandra, hewas a great ruler of Ayodhya known for honestyand integrity and also for keeping his promises. As the mythological story goes, the rivalrybetween Sage Vasishtha (preceptor ofHarischandra) and Vishwamitra resulted inVasishtha declaring that nobody would be ableto influence Harischandra to tell lies even under

great trying circumstances. And Vishwamitra tookit as a challenge. During a hunting expedition,Harischandra reached the hermitage ofVishwamitra where under certain circumstances,Vishwamitra compelled the king to donate hiskingdom to him. After the donation, the sageclaimed a fabulous “dakshina” which the kingcould not pay as the royal treasury had alreadygone to the sage while donating the kingdom. But the king took it as his duty to pay and withhis young son, Rohitashva and wife Taramatireached Kashi, the very flourishing pilgrimagecentre those days. There he sold his wife andson as slaves and he himself as a slave of thechief of the crematorium. He was given the dutyof collecting fees on every corpse brought forcremation. It so happened that the youngRohitashva died of a snake bite and Taramatibrought the dead body for cremation. She couldnot recognise Harischandra but he recognised her.He demanded a gold coin as fees for cremation. She expressed her inability as she was only aslave without any income! But his duty demandedthe collection of the fees. In such a situationTaramati could not control her grief and fortunatelyLord Vishwanath appeared on the scene anddeclared, “Harischandra, you have sufferedenough! I admire your qualities of honesty anddevotion to duties even under the most tryingcircumstances. I do not wish innocent people tosuffer unnecessarily in my place. You are freedfrom all your trials and tribulations. You will getback everything you have lost including your son.Go back to your kingdom and rule it as before!”At that time flowers came from heaven in a grandshower to mark the happy-ending.

Temples: Our temples are the greatest gift passedon to us by our forefathers as the Centre of God,Religion and our Culture. We the Saraswats wellknown for their intelligence and devotion must seethat the temples should always remain vibrant andtrue to the spirit of Devotion and Service to Godand His Devotees. They should lead others byexamples.

Utsavs & Festivals: By the word “utsav” we meanmultiplication of happiness and joy in Service ofGod and His Devotees. They bring happiness andjoy and bliss to all who attend and participate.

Safety Time Limit: These are not good days inthe strictest terms. Therefore while exhibiting anddisplaying costly ornaments especially to adornthe deities, we must take good care. Accordingto us it is advisable to not have the temple “utsavas”beyond 10.00 o’clock at night. It is good not onlyfrom safety point of view of our temples and deitiesbut also of the devotees, our women, returninghome wearing expensive ornaments. We havedirected all our temples in North Kanara to followthis directive strictly.

SAMYUKTA SARASWAT June 20145

The lost Saraswati river was the sheet-anchor ofthe Indian Civilisation and the mother of our Culturalethos that we have inherited through the manymillenia. Saraswati is invoked and eulogised manytimes as being the principal River, Devi and Motherof all civilised behaviour, besides being theembodiment of Speech (Vaak) and Knowledge(Vidya). The Rig Ved is replete with numerousevocative references which describe the SaraswatiRiver as the best of rivers, endowed with purest ofwaters and as the essence of speech. The Saraswati River system, encompassing theSapta Sindhu Kshetra, was not only the cradle ofthe earliest civilisation known to mankind, but wasalso the seat of eco-socio-political administrationand egalitarian governance. It hosted on its banksgreat institutions of knowledge and learning, besides being the germinator of noble and creativehuman impulses, so much so that the genesis ofmodern India’s creative genius can be traced backto the portals of Saraswati-civiliation. Saraswatiwas the nucleus of various disciplines of Science, viz, Physics, Chemistry, Metallurgy, Town-planning, Dock-building etc. It also hosted theancient world’s largest and earliest organisedmaritime trade and shipping industry. The Vedas, the mankind’s oldest spiritual document extant, originated on the banks of Saraswati River. TheSanskrit language, with an elevating musical pitchbuilt into it, emanated from the banks of Saraswatiand taught the entire mankind lessons in civilisedbehaviour. Saraswati River was thus truly thePresiding Deity of learning, knowledge and noblescholastic impulses. This river originated in the Himalayas rushed pastthe Shivalik mountains, entered the plains of whatwas the Sapta Sindhu Kshetra in the Vedic times, flowed through what is today Haryana, Rajasthan,Pakistan and discharged its contents in the GreatRann of Kachh and into the Arabian Sea. Aneastern arm thereof entered the Rann at thetrijunction of Pakistan, North Gujarat andRajasthan, proceeded southward along the coast

of North Gujarat and entered Saurashtra some 15Kms South west of Patdi and finally dischargedinto gulf of Khambhat via Nal Sarovar and Lothal. The course was appr. 2000 Kms long. However, in contemporary context, the questionis whether any such river did exist at all or whetherit was only a poet’s flight of fancy? And, if such ariver did exist in reality as described by the Vedas, whether the river can be resurrected through theapplication of various modes of science andtechnology ? The satellite pictures clearly showthe abandoned course of River Saraswati asdescribed in the Vedas. Archaeological researchand excavations show the existence of big urbancentres on the paleo channels of the now lostSaraswati River. The Saraswati resurrection will take much morethan a mere ordinary vision. With the applicationof modern techno-oriented methodology, it isperfectly possible to revive the flow of theSaraswati. It would however need a trend-settingevolution of approach involving a great deal ofpolitical will. The great extent of territory in the sub-continentcomprising Saurashtra, Kachh, Rajasthan, western Uttar Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh,Haryana, Punjab and the whole of what is Pakistantoday, once collectively hosted the world’s mostexpansive centres of political administration, learning, republican polity (Jana Padas) trade, commerce and agriculture through well-evolvedsystems of self-governance. If we can revive theSaraswati, which has fallen silent only in thestretch downstream of the lower Shivaliks but isstill functional in the upper stretch of theHimalayas, then we can very well recreate thegrandeur of ancient India and also regenerate theworld’s largest single surviving and functionalHeritage of Mankind.
