Navaratri is the festival indicating ninenights starting from 1st Day of the bright half ofthe month of Ashwin of the lunar calendar andconcluding on the 9th Day of the same monthand the 10th day is celebrated as Vijaya Dashami. This year it is from 25th Sept, to 3rd Oct 2014and Navami & Dashami are falling on one andthe same day. During the nine days first threedays are dedicated to offer poojas to MotherGoddess Durga or Goddess Parvati, next three

days for the worship of Mother Goddess Laxmiand the last three days for adoring MotherGoddess Saraswati and Vijaya Dashami is theday dedicated to Mother Goddess Saraswati. Asthe legend goes there was a fierce battle betweenMahisasura, a dreadful demon with a buffalo’shead armed with many boons and the MotherGoddess Durga had to fight for nine days andnine nights and She could slay the demon onthe tenth day which is celebrated even today asthe Day of Victory (Vijaya Dashami). It is a dayto remind all of us that ultimately the virtues will

prevail or win over the vices or it is a victory ofGood over Bad. Why She is worshipped asGoddess Parvati, Laxmi or Saraswati? The DeviBhagawat (Puran) tells that the Mother Goddess, the Supreme Deity who is the very source ofEnergy and Power that sustains the entireuniverse, known as “Shakti”—divided Herself intothree and became Goddess Parvati, GoddessLaxmi and Goddess Saraswati to become theconsorts of Lord Shiva, Lord Vishnu and Lord

Brahma respectively and in essence they areall rolled into one.During this particular period of Navaratri most ofthe temples will have havans, homas and yajnasdedicated to Mother Goddess and amongSaraswats there are quite a few Kulaswamini orKuladevata temples dedicated to MotherGoddess in Goa and other places celebratingNavaratri in a grand way.

This is not the only background ofNavaratri. We are told that there is another back-ground which states that Lord Rama conquered

STORY OF EKALAVYA

During the camp of H.H.Shri GokarnmathSwamiji at Kinnigoli from 8th May, 2014 to 11th

May, 2014 on the concluding day Shri Swamijinarrated the story of Ekalavya the hunter’s boy, noted for his devotion to Guru and dedication forlearning with fullest concentration. Shri Swamijistated that he had come across with anotherversion of Ekalavya’s story which is given herebelow:

“All of us know that Ekalavya tookDronacharya as his Guru and mastered archerypurely out of his faith and concentration. One cando anything by these two virtues. To tell the storyfurther all of us know that Dronacharya demandedhis right hand thumb as “Guru Dakshina” so thathe would not be able to shoot arrows properlythroughout his life! But we have come across withanother version of the story. Here Dronacharya, instead of asking for the thumb, demanded for anassurance that Ekalavya would not make use ofhis thumb throughout his life while shooting. Heagreed and learnt shooting arrows without usinghis right thumb. Later he participated in theMahabharata war taking the side of Kauravas andYudhishtira slayed him. As to the second versionof not making use of the thumb there are somehunting tribes even to this day who shoot arrowswith great ease, without making use of their rightthumb. They proudly claim they are thedescendants of the great archer Ekalavya and thatthey are still continuing with the example ofEkalavya.

(Incidentally the State Government ofKarnataka has instituted two annual awards inthe name of Ekalavya 1) For an achiever in Sportsand 2) for the veteran who has made life-timecontribution for the development of sports. Thepic above shows the Trophy with Ekalavya withhis bow and arrow ready to shoot.)

the powerful ten-headed Ravana, the evil incarnatein the battle of Lanka, released his wife Sita fromthe imprisonment and returned to Ayodhya by thePushpaka plane on this day. Thus in both thecases it is the triumph of virtues over the evildesigns. In both the cases the events might havetaken place centuries ago but we do celebratethem as festivals as though they have taken placeonly during the last year to remind us from time totime that atrocities can not live for ever! In the caseof Ramayan, even to this day on Vijaya DashamiDay in some quarters, huge effigies of Ravana &Kumbhakarna packed with fire-work powder areset on fire by two persons with the make up ofLord Rama & Laxman shooting arrows with the

flames of fire in the presence of huge crowds thatcheer the destruction of Ravana and Kumbakarna!Vijaya Dasami has one more significance. On thisday Mother Goddess Saraswati is worshipped asthe presiding deity of Speech, Knowledge,Literature and Education. And we the Saraswats, noted as the repositories of Vedic Knowledge holdHer in special esteem. That is why the emblemof AISCO & AISF is the Mother GoddessSaraswati.Surprisingly this issue is coming out duringNavaratri and we dedicate it at Her lotus feetand crave for Her Benedictory Blessings onbehalf of All Saraswats.

H.H.SHRIMAT SUDHINDRA TIRTH SWAMIJI & GSB SAMAJShri V.M.Pai, Bangalore

“We must make a mention of the laudableefforts of H.H.Shrimat Sudhindra Tirth Swamijiover the last 70 years, in reaching out the GSBSamaj all over India both in the traditionalsettlements of South India & Mumbai as well asthe newer settlements in the north. Swamijideserves the gratitude of the entire GSB Samajfor drawing our attention to the present-dayproblem of fast changes of giving up our traditionsand the need to restore them and also ourreligious practices. Through regular interactionswith the Samaj in Kashi Math Branches and intemples both in rural and urban areas he hasbeen able to propagate these values. Herejuvenated the tradition of Kuladevata worshipamong Kerala GSBs by establishing Kuladevatacomplex at Ambalamedu. By establishing newcentres at Delhi, Haridwar, Kalpi and Badrinath,His Holiness has spearheaded the movement forVyasopasana which incorporates all thetraditional values. Through establishing trainingcentres for vaidiks in Mangalore and Basrur, HisHoliness has ensured availability of competentarchaks for carrying out the religious rituals ofan expanding community. By establishing VyasaMandir complex in Haridwar and Bala VedavyasaMandir at Kalpi, the birth place of BhagavanVedavyas, he has highlighted the contribution ofShri Vedavyas to the entire Hindu SanathanaSamaj…

GSB community, a miniscule minoritycommunity in India traces its origin to Vedictimes. It is a community known for its periodicmigratory tendency all ovr India and nowestablished substantial presence in countriessuch as UK, USA and Australia. By and largethe community has been able to maintain itstraditions and food habits. The community hasstrong presence in commerce and trade and haspioneered the establishment of banking andeducational institutions. GSBs are generallyhelpful to the society in which they live. It has atradition of sacrificing material considerations forthe upkeep of religious traditions.

In common with other Indiancommunities GSBs are in the midst of turmoil intraditional values and is in the danger of losingthese. Maths, Temples and Samaj have workedclosely with each other to maintain traditions. There is an urgent need to mobilize the youthand motivate them in reviving our Vedic traditions. If the past is any indication, there is little doubtthat the community will be able to find a solutionto the ills plaguing it present. The sustained effortsmade in this regard by H.H.Shrimat SudhindraTirth Swamiji of Shri Kashi Math over the past 70years are loudable. The community is grateful toShri Swamiji and is looking forward to ShriSwamiji’s continued guidance and blessings forthe well being of the GSB Samaj.”

H.H.Shrimat Sudhindra Tirth Swamiji was initiated intoSanyas on 24th May, 1944 as the 20th Swamiji of Shri KashiMath by the illustrious Guru Maharaj H.H.ShrimatSukrateendra Tirth Swamiji, in Mulki in the precincts ofShri Venkataramana Temple. Seven eventful decades havesince rolled by and on 31st March, 2014 Shri Swamiji hascompleted 89 years also. Shrimat BhagawatGita—translated, means the eternalsong—which Icame to know onlyrecently! My fatherhad gifted me acopy of this greatbook just beforemy marriage and ithas been myeternal companionsince then. The richness of the

text, the variety of the topics covered, the splendourof God described by Himself, the way of life to belived and so much more who else could haveuttered it but the Lord?

The most amazing and unique part of thislovely poem is its newness and every time youread a new meaning emerges.

My father had said, if you do not findenough time to read each Chapter every day, readat least Chapter Twelve : Bhakti Yoga and thatalone is sufficient. But I took a different view and Idecided to read at least 5 pages every day. And ithas been a routine for me since then. However mypersonal favourite is Chapter Ten: Vibhooti Yoga. Here the Lord describes Himself as the best ofand in everything. He says, “Listen Arjuna as Iexplain to you My divine manifestations thatare prominent for, there is no end to the extentof My opulence….

I am the Self abiding in the hearts of allbeings…I am the beginning, the middle andthe end…

Of lights, I am the sunOf senses, I am the mind

Of the mountains, I am MeruOf weapons, I am the thunderbolt

Of rivers, I am GangaOf seasons, the flower bearing Spring

I am victory, effort and goodness of the goodOf secret things, I am silence, and of the

wise, wisdomKnow that in all cases whatever in existence ispowerful, glorious and beautiful issues frombut a spark of my splendour… But what needis there for all this extensive knowledge,Arjuna? I sustain this entire universe by a mereportion of myself…”

I have reproduced only a part of thechapter…but doesn’t it leave you wonderstruck inabsolute awe? Words fail and I find myself grosslyinadequate to describe the sheer beauty andmagnificence of the work!Because I love the bookso much that I have giftedcopies of Gita to many ofmy friends and relativesand young and old toshare the joy which I amexperiencing in reading itevery day.P.S: A bit of advice: Doinvest in this treasure. You will never regret it—God Promise!

Sulochana Puthli was born in a largeSaraswat Brahmin family in Kasargod then inKarnataka. As was the tradition at that time shewas married at the tender age of nine. Due tohigh child mortality a tragedy very soon renderedher a widow. She rebelled against the elder’s suggestion tospend her life like other child widows.

Shunned by society and with her brotherUmanath’s help got admitted to school after fouryear break in education. After passingmatriculation examination she completed herIntermediate Science from Government CollegeMangalore. She had stayed in an ashram calledSeva Sadan which was meant mainly for destitutewomen. As her family could not afford the feesfor boarding and lodging, she had to attend to alldomestic duties in return. She came to Bombayand as she could not study medicine due to lackof finances she decided to study microbiology, joined and graduated from the St. Xavier’s College,Bombay supporting herself financially by givingprivate tuitions and later teaching in a school.

In 1934 she met Mr. Anant Sheti amodern revolutionary actively involved in India’sfreedom struggle. After a long courtship they were marriedin 1938 under the Special Marriages Act againstfamilial opposition. The marriage being inter-castea rarity in those days made news and wasreported along with a photograph in the BombayChronicle of 6.2.1938 as an interesting inter-castemarriage.

Those were the days of protests andpicketing and ladies also joined in. Anant Shetiwas found leading rallies on the Chowpatty sandsurging people to unite against the British Rule. His provocative speeches landed him in trouble. He was externed by the British from BombayCity. The couple had to leave the city in a hurryand travelled towards Calcutta where obligingfriends offered them place to stay and helped themfind jobs. The police were soon on their heels andthey were compelled to move on. Till India’sIndependence the couple was hounded from placeto place. During these hard times she conductedadult literacy classes in towns wherever theystayed, mainly for women whose education wasmuch neglected in those days.
