M y t h o l o g i c a l l y aMother Earth isregarded as ShriBhoodevi, one of thetwo consorts of LordVishnu, (the other oneShri Devi, Laxmi) whosustains life on thisEarth by supplyingeverything that weneed. Sometimes shegets violently angry forthe reasons we don’tknow yet and her

wrath is expressed in the form of earth-quakes,hail-storms, torrential rains and floods, volcanoes,Tsunami and landslides causing heavy damageto life and properties. In insurance there is onephrase called “Acts of God” which means “Allthis is the decree of God,” to mean “Fate”. Butamidst these disasters there are/were someexceptions and we are unable to explain why theywere so especially the undernoted instances:1. The Earthquake on 25th April, 2015 of themagnitude of 7.9 in Richter Scale that took avery heavy toll in Kathmandu, Nepal did not spareany thing. But to every-body’s amazement, to ShriPashupati Nath Temple, the Temple of thepresiding deity of Nepal no harm was caused. Inthe words of the Temple Authorities, even ifsomeone wants to examine with a magnifyingclass not a single crack can be seen in the wallsof the temple or the roof. According to the historicalaccounts the temple was constructed in the 4th

Century A.D.2. In the month of November 2013 in Kedarnath inthe Himalayas there were unprecedented rainsresulting in flash floods causing widespread

NATURE & CALAMATIESdestruction which affected hundreds of pilgrims. It was felt that the Shrine of Shri Kedarnath, wascompletely washed away. But the recent reportsin the media have declared that the shrine is intact as a big rock from the mountains came rollingdown and stood on the way of floods giving fullprotection to the temple! This shrine was statedto have been built by Pandavas during theMahabharata times and subsequently renovatedby the Great Guru, Shri Adi Shankaracharya.3. On 26th Jan., 2001 there was an earth-quake ofsevere intensity in the Bhuj Region of Gujarat andthe effect of this was felt even in Ahmedabad Citysome 500 Kms away. Dwaraka, the pilgrimagecentre of Lord Krishna, though much closer toBhuj was spared!4. There is one more mythological event relatingto Shri Krishna’s Dwaraka. At the end of theincarnation of Shri Krishna the whole island townof Dwaraka sank inthe sea but the Sea-God was careful in sparingthe Palace where Lord Krishna had dwelt. It isstated that the present Temple of Dwaraka standson the very same blessed place.5. On 26th Dec., 2004, for the first time many ofus came across a new word Tsunami to denotepowerful tempest that made the seas and oceanscause very high billows to bring about damage tolife and properties in the sea-shore wherever itmoved. The current of the sea went everywherebut very surprisingly it left Shri Rameshwaram, the holyplace of Shri Ramayana fame, untouched!6. Years ago the River Yamuna was in spate andthe entire Mathura Township, where Lord Krishnawas born, was under flood water. But as reportedby the Press those days, no flood water camenear the temple, the exact spot where LordKrishna was born!

Causes of Earth Quake

According to the belief of ourforefathers this Earth is flat but circular inshape and that is why it is called the“Dharani Mandala” and is carried by EightGreat Elephants, standing in eight directions(Ashta Diggajas) and they stand on the backof a huge tortoise called, “Kamatha” whichis constantly moving in endless waters.Whenever the Elephants feel tired ofcarrying the load, they tremble and in turntheir load, this Earth.

The second version which is morepopular is that Sheshanaag, the thousand-hooded serpent on which Lord Vishnu rests,is carrying this Great Earth of ours. As andwhen he is tired he will shake a bit to relaxand that in turn makes the Earthtremble.(Please refer the picture above)

The third version is, our Earthwhenever overburdened with the sinscommitted by human beings tries to reducethe burden by shaking itself causing anearth-quake that would result in colossalloss of life and properties. We feel the thirdversion needs to viewed carefully andseriously by all of us-the Earthlings.

through different lands during different periods.Though he was a disciple of Shri Kavle Math, hewas an admirer of all the Saraswat Maths andparticipating in their programmes in Mumbai (in thetrue spirit of AISCO, as a Member). His best cameas the History of Saraswats in general and RajapurSaraswats in particular which was included as theSecond Part of the book, “Rajapur Saraswats”published on the occasion of Dombivli Conventionof AISCO held in the year 2003, sponsored byRajapur Saraswats(Chief Convenor: Shri SadanandD.Nayak). He had written about Shri Kavle Mathand more particularly about the celebrated ShriGowdapadacharya, the Founder of Shri Kavale Mathand also the great commentetor of MandukyaUpanishad. Before he joined Syndicate Bank,Nayakmam had started his career as a journalist inTimes of India, Mumbai where he had opportunitiesto interact with his boss, late Shri M.V.Kamath onmany topics. Beautiful and Benevolent Nature

In our garden a croton plant, of itsown, has turned itself into a beautiful shapeof Lord Shri Ganesh, our family deity andalso the deity of daily worship. This shapewas there for about a fort-night andthereafter it changed into only a plant withoutany shape! K.G. Mallya
