Jack Wade “Glass Edges”
The effects of light and color have always intrigued me. Glass reflects, distorts, absorbs, and refracts light depending on the color, texture, opacity and shape. So with glass as the medium, I use my graphic design knowledge and fine arts background to produce art that epitomizes my fascination with light and color. Bright colors, interesting shapes and intriguing designs are the things I concentrate on to create my art.
Background Born and raised in rural Kansas, I spent my childhood working on my family’s dairy farm, and dreamt of moving to a “Big City” to pursue a career in the Arts. After graduating with a BFA from Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri, I plied my artistic skills in Boston, New York and Houston.
Finally settling in San Diego in 1988, I now work for myself as a graphic designer. I also started as a fine arts painter. Then I decided to try working with kilned formed glass in 2003. Now I am devoting my artistic endeavors to this form of art. I create wall hang-ings, functional and display pieces, glass sculpture and jewelry using translucent, opaque, iridescent and dichroic glass. My designs start with computer renderings and patterns, then are transformed into works of art in glass through heat and cold working.

Maria Evangelina Rodriguez“Visiones Ecuestres”
Horses have captivated me since I can remember. I want to express their freedom, beauty and strength without barriers, halters, bridles or reins, maybe to restitute at least in my work what men has deprived them from. They have been the central theme of my paintings and ink the main ingredient in them.

The Gathering is a social, relaxed group where artists, aficionados, their spouses or significant others meet over potluck to discuss their latest work and adventures. Children are welcome but the work is not censored, so parental discretion is strongly advised.
The next Gathering dates will be:
May 5th and June 2ndDescription and schedule:• 3:30 to 4:00: bring artwork and check in.• 4:00: doors are locked (ring the doorbell after 4).• 4:30-5:30: artists break off into groups of 9 artists to
present their work. (If enough under-age artists bring work, they will be given a separate group and leader.) Non-presenters can continue socializing or join the group of their choice.
• 5:30 to 6:00: groups finish up, reconvene, socialize and/or help tidy up.
Artists can bring up to 3 pieces of artwork. All skill levels show work for fun, feedback, mentoring and exposure. In the UU tradition there will be a ‘question of the day’ (hereafter known as ‘the Molly’), which artists can answer or ignore when showing their work.
Artists are encouraged to bring show flyers, books, magazines, announcements, etc., to share. ‘Cost is just $5.00 per person.’ Everyone is also encouraged to bring food for the potluck. Jonathan will bring his famous guacamole!
New members: this is a great opportunity to meet other members, show your work and see the work being created in the San Diego area.
Everyone else: show us your work, whether you’re getting into the juried shows or not. We want to see what you are doing and have the opportunity to talk with you.
SDAI is continually growing and evaluating programs in order to provide the artist community with exceptional programming and opportunities. Feedback is always appreciated and, if you would like to do so, please email Lesley Anderson at: [email protected].
Co-Sponsored by:
The Paint-out is an SDAI-sponsored program to support and promote the art of plein-air painting (painting outside on location). Participating artists gather at designated San Diego locations to paint in plein air and socialize. An informal critique of a day’s paintings is performed with intent to provide a learning and supportive environment. SDAI members and non-members, of all skill levels, are welcome to participate.

The Graphite SocialThe Graphite Social presents an evening of life drawing with a fashion flair. Friday, May 31st from 6-10pm.
ArtGym SD presents:
Bare Artist Series*May 5
Personal Grooming(Richard ChauDavis moderating)
This is an exploration of the morning routine, brushing hair, teeth, etc. Recommended props are bathrobes, towels, toothbrush, shaving soap, make-up etc… Participants (see be-low) are welcome to bring any props that they would like to use. Stu is the professional support model. The square minimalist set will be defined by three blank rolling walls, adjustable lighting, and different sized white rolling podiums. Each artist-model participant will have at least 20 minutes to set up and shoot, more if time allows. As people arrive and are getting ready (change into morning-routine wear, dissolve make-up, etc.) Stu will be doing a perfor-mance piece (undressing, getting into a robe, brushing his hair, shaving, brushing his teeth, applying deodorant, getting into underwear, taking off underwear, trimming his eyebrows, brush-ing his hair, clipping his toe nails, being naked or somewhat ex-posed). When the session starts, around 6:30, Stu will fade off to the side to be used as a ‘prop’ by participants as needed or not.
$5, casual nudity, having a camera, having ideas, and being will-ing to sign a model release is all that’s required (you must be over 18). Be unafraid and have fun!
*Bare Artist Series:Artists often use themselves as models (so cheap and very ac-cessible). The Bare Artist Series takes this a step further and creates a space where a group of artists get together, and seri-ally set up, act in, and record a common theme creating a large number of diverse images to take home. Often a professional model is also hired to add an interpersonal element.
Photographs are created either in their own right to be refined into finished photographic/digital images or as documents to act as memory guides in other mediums. More specifically:· Artist/model quickly stages the shots they are in. This includes
themselves, any props, and any other models in the scene.· No pictures can be taken until the artist/model says start or
after the artist/model says stop.· Artist/model gets to have their camera (with timer and tripod
or assistant) where they want it (no other photographers blocking the view).
· Artist/model explores the theme, avoids artificial self-draping.· Participants get and give all-encompassing model releases at
the end of the shoot.

The Bride/Coastal Sensation #44 Hung Viet Nguyen, Torrence, CA Oil on canvas
Hung Viet Nguyen is a hiker. The ocean coast is his terrain and he paints what he sees.
No literal interpretation here in The Bride/Coastal Sensation #44. This is a painting of the senses.
Hung Viet Nguyen is a master of his craft, drawing influences from wood-block prints, Oriental scroll paintings, ceramics and stained glass.
sub-par, sub-conscious Matthew Steidley, Yamagata-shi, Japan Red ballpoint pen on paper
“Life is busy so I do not want to use valuable time preparing for art, as is such in other mediums.
Without hesitation, I put pen to paper. I carry a pen and a sketchbook at all times, everywhere I go and create every moment possible. Using a red ball-point pen is my way of bloodletting.”
Matthew Steidley
Halls of Justice Julie Garner, Marin, CA Mixed media (digital)
Julie Garner took hundreds of photographs from a stairway across from the construction of the new courthouse in San Diego.
The photos were printed and cut into 3/8¨ strips and woven as if in a tapestry using the photographs as the fiber.
Garner’s piece Halls of Justice reflects her view of our justice system in America…difficult to navigate and easy to get lost within._________

An International AffairPosted on April 23, 2013
A digital weaving of photographs, a watercolor of a ninety year old man and a textured landscape oil painting captured the prizes at the 52nd International Exhibition at the San Diego Art Institute.
One hundred pieces of art were chosen out of fifteen hundred entries, “I was up most of the night agonizing over which image to include in the show,” expressed juror Daniel Foster, Executive Director of the Oceanside Museum. “So much talent! Incredible!”
