COMMODORE’S CORNER I wish to thank all members who attended the Board and General Meeting on Saturday, June 6, 2015. I encourage more members to attend the General Meetings. At the July 11th General Meeting I want to acknowledge participants in the Frostbite, Ragtop/Stinkpot, and Clubhouse Clean up events. Come and get your brass plaques. At General Meetings, until they are gone, you can buy a jacket, t-shirt, Club burgee or pin and choose books from the giveaway box. On Saturday I was sailing my 36R in a typical race, except my boat had drifted to Motorboat Cove and was sliding along the shore when I went after it. Suddenly, the red canopy of the hot dog stand caught a breeze and ended up in the lake. Following that, the entire hot dog stand proceeded to enter the lake also. After staring in disbelief, I realized that my boat had just passed by the stand prior to this incident. If it had passed a few moments earlier, my boat “Black Magic”, may have met Davey Jones! Thanks to Ed Schoenstein for helping snag the canopy.

Hot Dogs on the Lake!

Thanks to Bob Heacock for the awards for Maker Faire volunteers. Thanks also to Bob for his past stewardship of the ORCA. The ORCA is now back in the Clubhouse! Enjoy the sailing and power events coming up! Dave Sands, Commodore

Member Profile: Rob Weaver Michael Fischer Born to the sea, he was—almost literally! Rob Weaver's father was a career sailor in the United States Coast Guard who served aboard ship in three wars: WWII, Korea and Vietnam. Rob came along between wars, when his father was based in New Orleans, patrolling the Mississippi and its Delta. From New Orleans, the family followed his father to Galveston for a few years. Then, in the late 50’s his dad was transferred to the other end of North America – Kodiak Island in the “Territory” of Alaska. While in Alaska, it became the 59th state, and that's where Rob spent several of his childhood years. In those days, the Coast Guard was pretty family-friendly, as Rob puts it. Starting at age 5, he would regularly spend time on various cutters with his father and even spent some time aboard the USCG Cutter Storis, the first US vessel to circumnavigate North America, including charting a navigable route through the Northwest passage. But sailboats in Alaska? No, not so much—at least not yet. After Alaska, the family moved to Boston where they nearly froze to death in the winters – yes, according to Rob, Boston was colder than Alaska. After a few years based in Boston, Rob's dad was transferred to his favorite post: Crissy Field, patrolling the Golden Gate (picking up “jumpers” and rescuing drunk sailors, according to Rob). So Rob grew up nearby, finishing junior high and then high school in Petaluma. Through his entire childhood, he stuck close to his father, learning dead reckoning, celestial navigation and powerboat operations in informal classes given by his dad and various other Coasties. As Rob puts it, "They taught me a lot of respect for the sea and the Coast Guard, and somehow managed to make it all fun and interesting." Indeed, Rob figured he was headed for the Coast Guard Academy after high school, with his congressional letters of recommendation all lined up. But the Vietnam conflict picked up, quite literally, his dad AND the 82' Point Comfort he was on and dropped them into the Mekong Delta for several hellish years. That experience radically changed Dad Weaver, and he returned home committed to moving to Canada should the military try to take his son. Coast Guard Academy? Not only no, but hell, no. OK, then, Plan B: off to UC Berkeley he went for his bachelor's degree, and on to Golden Gate Law School for his law degree. But that didn't keep Rob off the water, no sir! He started a 25-year career of actively racing sailboats as a member of a number of award-winning crews: Starting in 1970, virtually every weekend for the next 4 - 5 years found him sailing as crew in a Santana 37 (the Meltami) in the Danforth Series and the Big Boat Series. Then he shifted to a variety of other boats, crewing with anyone who needed someone to run the foredeck, including some time on a Bird Boat, the Cuckoo. During his law school years in the mid- to late-70s, he partnered with a classmate to campaign a Columbia Challenger, the Kulia. It was then that Rob and I first crossed wakes, so to speak, though we were too busy wrestling with the spinnaker poles of our competing boats to know it—I was an active foredeck hand on the winning Challenger Shay for almost 10 years, before my skipper moved his crew, including me, to a Catalina 27. After law school Rob handled the foredeck work for a couple of years on a Santana 35, the Spirit of Bombay, which won everything it entered. Rob got bitten by the Star boat, and bought Katastrophe in the mid 80’s, sailing it and crewing for a variety of other local sailors, for more than ten years, competing in Star races in the Bay and in Southern California. So it's no coincidence that his first Star 45 at the San Francisco Model Yacht Club is named Katastrof. Age and injuries, including those suffered when one of the boats he was on was dismasted off the SF lightship, finally took him off the water. He moved back to his first love, fast motorcycles. But he couldn't stay away: the boatbuilding bug got him, and he completed several sweet wooden rowing boats. But then the Big C (throat cancer) came along. While undergoing chemotherapy and radiation, he was looking for something that would keep him in the world he loves without being so physically taxing—and he stumbled onto a Star 45 blog and the SFMYC website. Since he lives only 10 minutes away from Spreckels Lake, he

wandered over and ran into Jim Forbes. Jim, the gracious fella he is, gave Rob a warm welcome, introduced him to the Star 45 fleet and...the hook was set.

Rob Weaver during the AMYA ODOM R6CR last month—intensely focused on finding the best lay line through the competitive fleet. Photo by Michael Fischer Now, Rob has two Star 45s, a Victoria and an ODOM, and he hopes to finish his model Bird Boat later this year. The three Victorias pictured in this issue of the SFMYC Newsletter were all built or restored by Rob. Gracious, friendly, welcoming, skilled, and married to his high school sweetheart (42 years and counting)—we're all delighted that his seafaring years have brought him to our shores. He has turned his skills to assisting and encouraging others to join the Star 45 fleet, and its growing numbers are testimony to his success. Wheelers at Spreckels Lake Dave Misunas Sunday, June 14th, the SFMYC hosted a Wheeler event on Speckles Lake in Golden Gate Park. We (Rich L, Dave M) arrived from Santa Cruz to a cool cloud covered morning with the strong wind already giving us a taste of what the rest of the day would be like. Jerry T was already in the clubhouse making last minuet modifications for his first race with a new Wheeler. Some not wanting to carry a 35 pound Wheeler from the clubhouse decided to setup at the lake side, by 12:30 there were 7 boats tuning up and making last minute adjustments. Another Wheeler had just been completed that very morning and thanks to Bryan S., Nancy B would be sailing this nice looking refurbished Wheeler for the first time. The races where officiated by Bernard Price with the assistance of Bruce Ettinger and Suzanne Patrick, after a skippers meeting the first race was started a little after 1 PM … the wind was now a bit stronger… On the ocean it was 18 mph SSW. On Spreckels it was coming from many directions at the same time which would cause undetectable (until you sailed into them) dead spots… if you add the very strong puffs this all made for some interesting (spelled challenging) sailing. The heavy winds took their toll on the Wheelers… out of the 7 boats 6 had issues, 2 with broken shrouds, 1 winch/sheeting, 1 with a hole that let in 3 inches of water. The last few races had 5 then 4 of the 7 boats on the starting line. Gary Boell a new SFMYC member took the day with an impressive Eight 1st place and Two 2nd place finishes. Jeff Depew finished in 2nd place. After the racing a meeting was held to firm up the rest of the Wheeler racing season.

Wheeler calendar 2015 1-Spreckels….April 19 2-Spreckels... June 14 The rest of the season looks like 3-Spreckels... Sep.5 4-San Jose.... Sep.19 5-Marin........ Oct.25 6- Spreckels… Nov. 7- Marathon. To be decided Wheeler Nationals in San Diego Race week...... Aug.11-12 Trolling the Web By Mary Rose Cassa I was browsing the Web for information about historical structures in western San Francisco, and was led to the San Francisco Public Library’s Historical Photograph Collection. While there, I typed in “Spreckels Lake” and found a few photos that I had not seen before. Check out the collection at http://tinyurl.com/m9cld4d. Included there are the following:

1947 news item about SF Model Yacht Club members wanting some trees cut down (things never change!)

An interesting black and white proof sheet showing 12 images of model power boats and their owners (undated, but appears to be 1950s [when men liked to wear fedoras]).

Use of the photos requires obtaining permission from the SF Public Library, which I did not pursue. Portland Model Power Boat Association Event Saturday, May, 23rd 2015 Bob van Vranken In response to Ken Valk’s notice in the May Nautical News, about the 4th Annual Weekend Float, by the Portland Model Power Boat Association for Saturday, May 23rd; my wife and I attended and really enjoyed it. Wonderful, friendly gracious people. Held at the beautiful Tualatin Commons Lake, a municipal pond, the event was very well attended by both sailing and power boat vessel enthusiasts. A majority of the power vessels were military; destroyers, cruisers, battle wagons, submarines, all of incredible detail, finish, and performance, some very large. Gorgeous sailboats too; I even saw a fully rigged gaff topsail schooner bowling along, on a broad port reach, with all sails pulling. Acting Commodore Bob Muller opened ceremonies with fitting benediction and tributes to Memorial Day, and with flag salute by uniformed boy scouts, and an adult, a cappella, seven member choral group. The membership hosted us to a sumptuous gratis lunch, followed by sailings all afternoon. Everyone was most gracious and we are sure we’ll come back there again.

News from the Star Fleet Rob Weaver, Fleet Captain Eight boats competed on the second Star 45 race day. Mary Rose Cassa twice took the entire fleet to school on the proper way to start a sailboat race. Recognizing the heavily favored port side of the start, she easily outdistanced the fleet to the first mark twice. It was an amazing sight to see her heavy Dumas boat lead the fleet by ten yards to the windward mark in two successive races. Winds were high, and created difficult conditions for the second time this year. Nancy Barbata’s boat lost its mast on the 5th race. Coming into the last race (race 8) Ryan Schofield and Rob Weaver were tied for the day. A wind shift on the last leg of the last race favored Rob over Ryan. Luck, not skill, decided the final results, typical for Spreckels Lake. Seven boats competed on the third Star 45 race day. The fleet was decimated by heavy winds (again). Only 3 boats managed to compete in all eight races, but with a few hasty repairs 4 boats competed in the final race. Jim Harrold and Rob Weaver spent too much energy fighting each other for position in race 4, and forgot to take the leeward mark as a gate. Jason Halaby casually advised them of their mistake as he passed them going in the opposite direction half way between the gate and the starting buoys. (He seemed altogether too happy to pass this information on to them as he was steaming by them at full speed!) Jason finished first in the race for his first “ace” of the season. This first place finish was overdue for Jason, who lost a mast in first place within sight of the finish on the first Star 45 race day in April, and lost a race earlier in the day to Rob by inches. It won’t be the last time everyone follows him to the finish. He built a fast boat and is quickly becoming an excellent skipper. Race Results: April 25, 2015 2st Rob Weaver, Angry Crow 1st Jim Harrold, Elysian 2nd Ryan Schofield, Brooklyn 2nd Rob Weaver, Angry Crow 3rd Jason Halaby, Night Owl 3rd Jason Halaby, Night Owl 4th Steve Ma, Pam 4th Henry Kullberg, Katastrof 5th Mary Rose Cassa, Reilly 5th Oscar Koechlin, Nut Cracker 6th Oscar Koechlin, Nut Cracker 6th Ryan Schofield, Brooklyn 7th Nancy Barbata, Elysian 7th Mary Rose Cassa, Reilly 8th

News from the Victoria Fleet Michael Fischer, Victoria fleet Captain First off, a mighty thanks to the seven Victoria skippers who helped out in the ODOM R6CR last month: Super, Peter, Tony, Charlie, Drew, Ed and myself. We were returning the generosity of the ODOM skippers who helped us out in the 2014 Victoria R6CR, and look forward to continuing the mutual inter-fleet support! (Of course, there were skippers from other fleets bearing a hand, as well, led by Jerry Turney and Nancy Barbata...) Here are our standings so far, halfway through the season: Jim Harrold, in front with 34 points; then David Gormly, 53; Michael Fischer, 68; Steve Bechtold, 75; Steven Sutley, 95; Bob Heacock, 103; Rob Weaver, 131; Charlie Roskosz, 153; Jonas Rowe, 156; Tony Dodson, 164; Dave Pollack, 170; Peter McElmury, 173; David Ogami, 176; George Shoblo, 187; and Drew Marshall, 187. A number of us are finding that vacation trips that take us away from the lake on race days are very costly in terms of points! Get out your calendars and checkbooks, Victoria captains: We have the annual Mad Duck Regatta coming up on August 8th, hosted by the Monterey Peninsula Yacht Club. Racing on Saturday in Lake el Estero, and bigboat cruising on Monterey Bay on Sunday—let's make a good showing! We will make our four Club-owned boats available for racing down in Monterey, so get your reservation in early, if you need to borrow a boat in order to compete. NORs and registration forms are in the rack next to the Boathouse door. Also, our own fourth-annual Golden Gate Challenge is coming up only a month after the Mad Duck: on September 12. Come on, skippers—we expect that at least half of our 32-member Victoria fleet will participate, eh? The NOR is up on the SFMYC website, and the forms are also in the rack next to the Boathouse door. Same story on our four fast-sailing Club boats. On the "good news" front: there's a new Victoria fleet a-building nearby, in Sausalito! A group of big-boat skippers on the Richardson Bay waterfront, led by US Sailing International Judge Robbie Dean, is just getting started. They have 11 boats fully rigged and racing, with two more a-building; about half Silver and half Gold. They sail in the Bluewater Yacht Harbor turning basin. Let's hope for some friendly back-and-forth competition from our neighbors across the Gate! On the "bad news" front: new Victoria kits are getting hard to come by. The US distributorship changed hands late last year, and there appear to be both manufacturing and distribution glitches. So please keep your eyes and ears open for opportunities to purchase Victorias—both new kits and older boats. Several of us are willing to build up a stock of kits and refurbishable boats so that prospective new members of our fleet won't be prevented from joining us because of a lack of boats. Here's a photo of what we mean: three boats, built anew or rebuilt by Rob Weaver—and they are ALL great-sailing boats!

Freesail Squadron Report Bernard Price, SSO The Freesail Squadron enjoyed a fine trio of races during late May and June with strong participation, the wind seeming to settle into a more predictable pattern and the algae bloom now mostly behind us. All of the fleets have completed at least half of their Season Championship races and the season point totals are close. I have posted a copy of the mid-season scores on the bulletin board in the clubhouse for your review. Be sure to mark your calendars for the upcoming Skipper’s Cup, Sunday July 19th. Boats from any of the three Freesail fleets may compete for The Skipper’s Cup during this fun, handicap, non-season scoring event. I hope to see you there with your favorite boat! M-Class Race Three, May 31, 2015 Pell Mell, sailed by Dave Misunas found her pace and kept out of trouble to finish on top of R3 by winning all of her runs and losing only one beat to second placed Aloha sailed by Jeff Stobbe who was only one point behind at the finish. Bruce Ettinger, sailing Shadow was also enjoying great sailing during the first three of four rounds winning all but one run until a sudden and significant gust from the south caused his boat to meet the north shore head-on while up on a plane resulting in a keel failure and a DNF for the day. Happily, the keel was recovered from the bottom of the lake and Shadow has been successfully repaired. M-Class R3 Results: 1st Dave Misunas, M-56, Pell Mell 5th Gordon Leighton, M-54, Elfin 2nd Jeff Stobbe, M-53, Aloha 6th Colleen Stobbe, M-48, Mmm-Good 3rd Mike Stobbe, M-50, Pocahontas 7th David Sands, M-43, Dart 4th Stephen Ma, M-51, Fulcrum DNF, Bruce Ettinger, M-41, Shadow

36R-Class, Race Three, June 07, 2015 The 36R fleet continues to prove popular with a record or near-record level of participation of fourteen skippers for R3. We also had the pleasure of welcoming Craig Carter, our Power Squadron Officer, sailing Bruce Ettinger’s Beamy Up to the fleet- Craig enjoyed a good day finishing his debut race in second place behind Mike Stobbe who had a near perfect string of beats winning all but one to Gordon Leighton. Mary Rose Cassa and Jason Spiller broke a tie for third and fourth places respectively. There was also a three-way tie for eighth through tenth and a two-way tie for thirteenth and fourteenth places. Great, well matched sailing overall! 36R-Class, R3 Results: 1st Mike Stobbe, 36R-48, Judy 8th Yuriko Sands, 36R-47, Kami Kaze 2nd Craig Carter, 36R-53, Beamy Up 9th Gordon Leighton, 36R-51, Bad News 3rd Mary Rose Cassa, 36R-28, Manzanita 10th Ed Schoenstein, 36R-39, Blue 4th Jason Spiller, 36R-24, Ruthless Robin 11th David Sands, 36R-34 Black Magic 5th Bruce Ettinger, 36R-55, Warp Speed 12th Colleen Stobbe, 36R-31, Grace 6th Jeff Stobbe, 36R-59, Has Beam 13th Bernard Price, 36R-49, Jazz & Cocktails 7th Stephen Ma, 36R-37, White 14th Julie Shryne, 36R-13

X-Class Race Four, The Virgil Cup, June 13, 2015 Eight skippers vied for the Virgil Cup on a foggy but otherwise delightful day for sailing. Sailing four rounds in groups of three made for a relatively short event with these quick boats covering the course in no time. Jeff and Mike Stobbe had a close battle for first place with only one point deciding the finishing order. Bernard Price finished several points behind in third place wining all of the beats but had less luck finding speed on the runs. The only casualty of the day was a bamboo pole which failed during a tack. Centuries old, simple and reliable technology will still surprise us while Freesailing! X-Class R4, Virgil Cup Results: 1st Jeff Stobbe, X-44, Imp 5th Bruce Ettinger, X-28, Colleen 2nd Mike Stobbe, X-34, ‘Spearment 6th Paul Staiger, X-90, Mary II 3rd Bernard Price, X-36, Emily 7th David Sands, X-76, Stars & Stripes 4th Jason Spiller, X-21, Storm King II 8th Phil Durfee, X-8, Molly Brown

The Petaluma Santa Rosa

International Plastic Modeler’s Exposition!

The Santa Rosa Hobby Exposition and Swap put on by the International

Plastic Modelers Society chapters of Sonoma County and Mt. Diablo with

help from the Fundemonium Hobby Shop was a blast! It was held on

Saturday, the 13th of June and I wish that more Club members could have attended this great hobbyist’s event.

Don Ciucci was able to put together Club participation for this the Expo in, quite literally, the very final

moments before the event. Besides himself, Don was able to get Don Gomez of The Irregulars, Club

members Gerry Bowen, Robert VanVranken, Blaine Russell and myself to grab some of our boats and go to the

Expo for the day and what a fine day it turned out to be! Getting up at 0’dark-thirty to meet up at the

Clubhouse and drive up was really worth it and not just because of the Napa Valley heat and sunshine.

The new facility, the Wells Fargo Center for the Arts, IS missing a pond, but it is larger, with LOTS of free

parking and was filled with hobbyists of all sorts and our display of six tables was right at the entrance. Expo

attendees had to go directly past us to get in and, since these were already hobbyists, the Club’s display

received lots of very interested exposure. My personal thanks to Don and everyone who was able to make it

and brought their boats at the last minute, who took their time to put their best foot forward for the Club!!!

Thank you all! The event promoters want us back and already plans are being made for our return next year!
