“PRESIDENT’S CORNER”
Dear Goldenaires:
April opened with a sunny little “trip” to Italy
via the lovely Italian Luncheon for 80 plus members
who enjoyed the delicious raviolis (catered by Debbie
Ghiringhelli), chicken and cheesecake, and with the
help from Kitchen Crew #B-Effie Lee, Betty Bohman
& Cindylu & John Janisen!!
There is an awful lot of work getting all the
food prepared and served, (that day and every
luncheon we have) so I thank all who work so hard
putting everything together, and also by coming to
these events and enjoying them! We wouldn’t be
here without you!
The entertainment by Joanne Saltzgaber and
her friends Jeannie & Tom with nostalgic tunes of
“Arrivederci Roma”, “That’s Amore” and many more
certainly added to the festivities! We are happy to
report that they will be returning to entertain us at the
Summer Splash Luncheon on June 16th
– don’t miss
out so sign-up NOW!
I hope you got your taxes in on time so you
could enjoy Easter! I was getting ready for Easter
dinner when my sink clogged! Rather than have the
sink torn apart and useless, in desperation, I
remembered something my grandmother said about
pouring baking soda down the drain and following
with some vinegar, so having nothing to lose, I tried
it, watched it bubble and foam, repeated it, ran hot
water down the drain and lo and behold! It worked!
Pays to listen to your grandma! Easter was wet and
foggy, but kids still went on egg hunts! I was talking
to some “kids” (in their twenties) at the bank after and
they said they would still go to egg hunts if anyone
offered! So there you go! You’re never too old for
Easter Egg Hunts & CANDY!
Also, all you “foodies” – Effie is cooking
again on May 23rd, so join in on fun and food and
conversations! Looking ahead to June, there’s the
DELTA KING and OAKLAND ZOO trips and of
course our Summer Splash on June 16th
!
SAVE THE DATE-MAY 18th
, 2018 We will be celebrating the San Rafael Goldenaires
50th
GOLDEN ANNIVERSARY!!!!!
Details to follow!
Lastly, if you still have gift certificates from
the Goldenaires-please use them!!!
Best Wishes To You!

entertained at senior gatherings. For the past 25
years, the Kut-Ups have produced professional

PARAMOUNT
THEATRE
TOUR/LUNCH-
July 24th
(Mon)-$80 ITINERARY: We will
depart from the Park &
Ride at Smith Ranch
Road at 8:30AM and
from the San Rafael Community Center at 9:00AM.
We will travel to Oakland for a tour of the
PARAMOUNT THEATRE (10:30-12:30pm). Built
during the Depression and opened in December 1931,
this great Art Deco movie palace was the largest
auditorium on the West Coast, seating 3,476.
Designed by Timothy Pflueger of San Francisco, the
Paramount combines spectacular advertising with
stark functionalism. With its 110' facade featuring a
tile mosaic of two monumental figures, a stage 32'
deep and 50' wide, a mechanically elevated orchestra
pit, 20 production and dressing rooms, it serves all the
arts from symphony to dance to variety shows and
movies. The tour is approximately 1 ½ -2 hours.
You will also be taken throughout public spaces, to
the basement of the theatre and if there is not a
production loading into the theatre, groups can also be
taken back stage. The focus of the tour is on the
history of the building, architecture and
restoration. The docents are extremely
knowledgeable, and encourage cameras and
questions. *NOTE: Since this was erected in 1931,
there is no elevator to the various floors. There are
approx. 30 steps between each floor. However, you
can stay on the main floor if you wish. You will also
have an opportunity to sit for a while and listen to the
beautiful music from their famous ‘70s organ! After
our tour, we will arrive at HOTEL MAC
RESTAURANT in Point Richmond for a hosted
luncheon. MENU SELECTION at time of signups: 1)
Mac Club Sandwich-Turkey, Avocado, Bacon on
sourdough toast 2) Sirloin Burger 3) Southwest

Park & Ride at Smith Ranch Road at 8:45AM and from the
San Rafael Community Center at 9:15AM. From there, we

Everyone who attended last year had a fabulous time; they
have asked for a repeat! The Zoo itself sits inside 490-acre
Knowland Park and is home to more than 660 native and
exotic animals. There's a lot to see and do while you're
there. Explore the birds, mammals, reptiles, amphibians,
and arthropods. The African Veldt is a focal point of the
Zoo. Its central location makes an easily accessible meeting
point. Here in this large open area, you will find the
beautiful herd of giraffes, elands, Egyptian geese, and other
wild birds who have decided to drop in for the day. While
viewing the animals, feel free to rest on a bench and enjoy
a tasty treat or cool beverage from the ice cream/water cart.
The African Savannah is located up the hill to the left, just
behind the giraffes. Here you will find an enormous 4-acre
area for the amazing elephants, a spacious tree-filled
enclosure for our lions, an aviary filled with beautiful birds,
and a quiet home for our zebras. Grab a snack or refreshing
beverage from the African Savannah Café and take a
moment to eat or rest under the pavilion. Don't forget to see
the Vervet Monkeys, sneak through the Savannah Reptile
cave, spy on the Hyenas, and crawl through the special
Meerkat viewing tunnel. As you explore this area, please
take note of the beautiful and unique plant life that is native
to the African Savannah. As you explore this area of the
Zoo, you will notice naturalistic rockwork, vines, climbing
structures and lush foliage. Animals like our Chimpanzee,
White-Handed Gibbon, Siamang, Cotton-Topped Tamarin,
and Squirrel Monkeys live, climb, eat, and relax high in the
tree tops. You will also find several types of bird and
reptile species in this area as well as our majestic tiger
enclosure complete with pond and waterfall. Australia is
home to some amazing and unique animals. Here at the
Zoo you will find Emus and Wallaroos roaming about.

Living with Arthritis: Recognizing the Signs and Symptoms
Arthritis can make everyday tasks difficult and painful. Walking, driving, reaching for items in the grocery store and even getting dressed in the morning can become seemingly insurmountable challenges. May is National Arthritis Awareness Month, a time to learn more about this debilitating condition that affects one in every five adults in the United States. More than 100 different conditions affecting joints and surrounding tissues fall under the umbrella of arthritis, but they share a group of common symptoms. Recognizing the signs of arthritis is important for moving forward with diagnosis and treatment to improve your quality of life.
Types of Arthritis
The different forms of arthritis often share a symptom: inflammation in one or more joints. The primary signs of the disease are stiffness and pain in the joints that often get worse with age. The most common forms of the disease — osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis — cause damage in the joints through different mechanisms. Rheumatoid arthritis, an autoimmune condition, targets the joint linings, known as synovium. In osteoarthritis, cartilage in the joints begins to deteriorate. Other forms of arthritis are caused by underlying conditions, including infections. Treatment and symptoms can vary among the types of arthritis. However, the primary goal is to lessen pain and other debilitating
effects so individuals with the disease can remain independent. Recognizing the Symptoms
Individuals suffering from the early joint pain of arthritis often believe they’ve sustained an injury. They may spend time and effort attempting to treat themselves with over-the-counter medications and other readily accessible remedies. Recognizing the early signs of the disease is important for improving the long-term prognosis of arthritis. If you have any of the following symptoms, consult your doctor for further evaluation:
Pain or stiffness in joints
Tenderness, warmth or redness around joints
Constrained range of motion in affected joints
Unusual tiredness or malaise
Bumps or lumps around joints While different types of arthritis share common symptoms, your doctor will need to determine the specific form of the disease by examining you, reviewing your medical history and conducting diagnostic test
Living with Arthritis If you’re diagnosed with arthritis, it’s important to become proactive in managing the condition so that you can continue living a full and active life. Numerous treatments are available to help relieve your symptoms and improve the function of your joints. To determine the treatments that will work best, you may need to try several. Options include medications like nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and analgesics, physical therapy and surgery to repair or replace joints. Some people find success with alternative therapies such as massage and acupuncture. The Arthritis Foundation notes that exercise and a healthy, anti-inflammatory diet also help some individuals combat the disease. By recognizing the early signs and symptoms of arthritis, you can take steps to continue living your best life.

Teaching technology to Goldenaires since April 2016: I push buttons that I never pushed before. I’m not afraid to
just push buttons. I’m not afraid to experiment with the thought that I’m going to lose everything because if you hit the undo
button it goes back. I’m more “comfortable” which with a senior is a good “word.” ~ Elena
After just four weeks of classes (one time per week)…“I’m not as afraid to try things. I don’t feel like I’m going to totally
screw it up. I got my phone when my husband passed away. I was taking classes at night and wanted it for emergencies. As it
turned out, the places that I go don’t have very many bars so I didn’t use it as a phone as much as I thought I would. So I
learned to play games and take notes on it. Now, that I have you to be my little help desk, I’m not afraid to learn new things.

MEMORY SCREENINGS Are you concerned? Take Action!
Thursday, July 20th
9:00am – 12:30pm (half-hour individual appointments)
Who should be screened? Memory screening makes sense for anyone concerned about memory loss. Screenings are also appropriate for anyone who
does not have a concern right now, but who wants to see how their memory is now and for future comparison.
What is memory screening? Memory screening is as simple as a few short activities with a geriatric professional. How you do with the activities is not a
diagnosis and in no way does it replace consultation with a qualified health professional, but it may lead to a thoughtful
conversation about “next steps.” You have time to discuss your concerns with a professional. The screenings are individual
half-hour sessions just between you and a professional.
Why screen now? Why not? It’s never too early (or too late) to make lifestyle changes that can affect your overall
health: Nutrition -- eat lean protein, fruits, vegetables, foods high in omega 3-fatty acids and antioxidants
Socialization -- call a family member, visit a friend, join an organization, volunteer
Mental Stimulation -- read out loud, problem solve, play a game
Spirituality -- pray, meditate, go to a place of worship
Physical Activity -- walk, dance, garden
Memory Screenings are a national initiative of the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America. In our community, Senior Access,
Senior Helpers, Care Navigate and the Goldenaires are working together to bring this initiative to you.

Brain Fitness Workshop-no charge
JUNE 8th

As we age, we start relying more and more on the routines of life. We brush our teeth, we write our name or we drive the
same direction to the store. The challenge with routines? They don't require you to think about the activity.
There are many ways to exercise your brain:
Use your non-dominate hand to do a task * Drive a different way to go shopping
Learn something new * Play a Game
The Alzheimer's Foundation of American suggests the following five things to promote a healthy brain lifestyle:
Physical Activity -- walk, dance, garden
Nutrition -- eat lean protein, fruits, vegetables, foods high in omega 3 fatty acids and antioxidants
Socialization -- call a family member, visit a friend, join an organization, volunteer
Mental Stimulation -- read out loud, problem solve, play a game
Spirituality -- pray, meditate, go to a place of worship
Workshop: San Rafael Goldenaires & Senior Access will be offering a new way to accomplish these activities.
Join us for 1 hour of FUN activities. Our activity leader will lead you through a series of brain fitness exercises.
The event will provide you an opportunity to achieve:
