    Preparing students for Speaking Tests

  • How is it done at present?

    A common methodology is;

    • STEP 1 – The teacher creates a list of typical questions for each topic along with suggested answers.

    • STEP 2 – The students take a copy and add their own answers during class and at home.

    • STEP 3 – The teacher conducts a series of one-to-one mock test sessions.

... as shown in more detail on the following slides.

  • The teacher creates a list of typical questions for each topic along with suggested answers.

  • The students take a copy and add their own answers during class and at home.

    Je m’appelle Paul

    J’ai quinze ans

J’habite à Bradford près de Leeds

  • The teacher conducts a series of one-to-one mock test sessions.

This is a tried and tested method for MANY years so why do we need to change things?

  • The need for change ...

    • SAVE TIME

    – How much time does it take to interview students one by one?

    • IMPROVE STUDENT ORACY

    – Students don’t actually hear themselves speaking very often

    • MEET YOUR STUDENT EXPECTATIONS

    – Students want to make use of technology anytime, anywhere

  • How can Study 1200 help?

    • It builds upon tried and tested methods – it does not replace what you already do!

    • Students can practice as often as they wish in order to improve their oracy skills in their own time

    • It makes use of familiar technology in the home

    • It significantly reduces student anxiety

    • It can definitely improve results

school to carry on or have another go• Students send (via email or VLE usually) the teacher their file• Teachers use Voice Insert to provide qualitative feedback and

    this iterative process continues ......

    • Click the loudspeaker icon to listen to a typical audio file created using the above sequence. Beeps have been inserted to highlight the various stages listed above. Many apologies to any linguists for my poor effort !!!
