Our Best Sunday So FarFor sometime the Ceres Sunday Bi

GOALS IN GIVINGThe congregation has grown to know

and love Au re l ino Mendes . So whenhe moved to Gpiania to givelcadershipto the Insti tute residence program our

OsOTio Gonzalves, wife Lidia anddaughter Lucimar , whi le in Ceres fora Sunday.people felt identification with thework. They responded well to the appeal to give suppor t on a regularmonthly basis. First offering was in April .

Then May 7 Osorio Gonzalves, president ofthe area evangelizingassociation, was p re sent with hi s family andpresented the work and plans of theevangelizing association. Again theresponse in individual commitmentswas good. So we now have two Sundays a month set to give special outr ea ch o ff er ings . God has blessedabundantly. This year ha s been an exceptionally good year in our agr icultural region. People are becoming moreprosperous. It is time to give God

ing together about an eachone winone program. Earl preached a sermonrecently that brought it to a launchingpoint. Six months was set as the timefor each member to win one other perso n to the Lord. Every Christian canbe a channel of blessing. Every truedisciple must be a witness or lose hi switness. Everyone ha s friends--some-one to whom they can speak or withwhom they can work God using theman d th eir i n t e r e s t and love to reach asoul. Our people have taken well tothe id ea and several have already expressed plans to win two persons toChrist this year. Will you accept thisa.s a challenge to meet the same goal?

F acts F rom Brazi lInteresting analyses of the Brazil

ian census and statistics findings arestill being published. For ins tancein 1971 in Goias there were 432 000students- -? 100 enrolled in superiorcour ses; 27 000 in secondary education and 21 900 enrolled in primarycourses. Of that t ota l 56, 000 were enrolled in Goiania. In a populat ion thatis at least 5 of school age thatmakes just a little over 15 in school, and thus leaves yet much to be desired. Government literacy programsare making good gains, however.

Fifteen companies are already atwork preparing the Brasilia-Belem roadfor hard surface al l the way. Almost1,800 kilometers 'l l 19 miles) is included in the contracts. Some companieswill have finished their part in twoyea r s

iNumber of automobi le s on th e roadsin Brazil is increasing more rapidlythan roads and parking places If youparallel park on the curb in Goianiayou are likely to be trapped by carsdouble parked.

    MERRY CHRISTMASand a

H PPY N EW Y E RC hr is tma s time is always a happy season. The ending of a year and the be gi nni ng of

another brings its own excitement and enchantment. Holidays and a chance to rest andrelax, time to watch special programs and games on televis ion, p arties and the ann ualchildren s program p re par ed by the church offer a ch an ge of pace and a peaceful satisfact ion with l ife.

It was the birth of Jesus of Nazareth which brought good news of a great joy .. . toall . .. people. Even our calendar proclaims the good news, as it marks the number ofyears since Jesus birth to ary and J os ep h, God s c hos en s er va nts for this special mission. Without Him we would no t even have the words th at a re most common in ou r vocabulary. Time is divided and ordered by the movement of the planets which in the beginni ngChrist helped God the Father create and syncronize into the order that we call universeand over which He now ha s all authority, administering and rul ing with benevolence ,chari ty and compassion.

May this season offer an opportunity for you, dear reader, to consecrate, or reconsecrate, your life to Him without whom it is impossible to receive salvation an d see God.And may you sing with the angels:

Glory to God in the highestand on earth peace

    good will among men.

    > I W EN T A LO NG FOR THE RIDE: It was on emergency trip. We had received a t e leg ram and a phone call urging1 th e necessi ty fo r David to come to th efarm north of Alvorada, s ome 7 00 km. upth e Belem-Brasil ia highway. One of ouwomen h ad t ak en to o m an y s l eep ing p i ll st and th e e nt ir e c ou nt ry -s id e w as anxiousand upset. Sh e had five small ch ild renno one to care fo r them, no way to ge t toth e hospital, no doctor. . . It was d ec id edthat David would go an d I pe rh aps cou ldalso b e o f h el p. So I went along fo r th eride an d th e possibi l i ty of need. This was t he first time in 14 years thaI had mode t hi s par ti cu la r t ri p n ort h

Jus t once before, with a c ou pl e o f ouChristian I n st it u te s t uden ts an d David, had gone and we held Bible schools fot he c hi ld re n each da y along t he r oa d w it hpreaching every night. We took twow eek s th at time, th e road had not ye; been graveled. Now there is paving asfa r as Ceres (where th e McAfee's live)an d from there much of t he r oa d is graveled , but the difficulty l i es in all the detours necessary while work is being doneto prepare th e main road fo r asphalting.Arising at 4 a.m., we made the trip upan d back, over a thousand miles, inthr ee days. Th e b reath- taking hea t, t he s ti ck y, c li ng in g dust, th e rou^ washboard shaking road, made the trip anexper i ence to remember .T her e were t hr ee things which impresse d me greatly. First, th e immensebeauty of Brazil 's country-side. It istruly th e Grea tGreen Cont inent . Onevery side were t al l, g re en palm trees, green plants of e very type on th e richgreen velve ty l am i. The red;yellow,o ra nge, a nd lavender mimos a and bougan-v il la t re es were i n f ul l bloom. The h i ^ ,rolling hil ls (o r low moun ta in s) we re avariety of green grass and trees , brownplowed fields, an d cattle grazing. Allalong th e road were fruit t re es , h eav il yladen with oranges, bananas, mangosan d papaya. The second impression was of recentprogress . I re me mb er ed w ha t a n u nc omfor table, long rough trip it had been 14yea rs befor e, with no stop-over placesalong the way. We had stopped in a wayside village an d th e four of us , two menan d two women had had to sleep in thesame room with e igh t t ruckers (enrouteto Belem). We slept in ou r clothes an dtraveled on the next da y in th e sameclothes. Now filling stations a nd sma llroad-side dormitories have sprung upa long the way. We spent ou r f ir st n ightin Porangatu in a smal l hotel with afairly comfortable be d in a private rooman d a place to show er o ut under th ewater box. The road is cut all th eway through to Bel em , w it h paving asfa r as Ceres , and anothe r 150 km . s tretchalmost ready to open.My t hi rd and very v iv id impres s ion wasthe abject poverty in th e rural areas, of ft he h ig hway .
