    BRAZIL:Impressions and Observations

Bill NaylorThrough 19 days in Brazil, there

were many impressions, bu t which onest o w r it e a bo ut How abou t th e vas tnessof th e country, th e hot days, or t he rainwhich came almost every day? Therewere many impressions, bu t these ar ethe ones that stand ou t in my memory: The people who did their best tomake us welcome and explain family andBrazilian cus toms Our missionaries, all of whom wentou t of their way to make ou r visit asenjoyable and informative as possible. Surely th e conference at Uberlandiawas a high point of our visit. Anytime 90Christians gather together for 5 days, allare going to be uplifted .

Probably what was most impressivewas th e d ed ic a ti on o f our missionariesand our Brazilian brothers and sisters toour faith in Jesus Chris t . Whethe r i t wasdemonstrated by a little girl sitting onmy lap singing about Jesus , or by ayouth group s inging praise to God, or aminister preaching the Word.I was impressed by their dedicationand love of the Gospel. As I said manyt im es w he n we visited in hom es andchurches, when you ar e with fellowChristians, i t doesn t matter whetheryou ar e in Brazil, Haiti or Wichita,Kansas...you feel at home. Althoughone's home and family ar e veryimportant, I can hones tl y say I felt athome with our brethren in Brazil andthank you all for a very impressive visit. Our prayers ar e with you.

OUR TRIP TO BRAZIL(Continued from page 2)for me, because I was able to renew oldfriendships with many of the missionaries present.

After Uberlandia, we returned toBrasilia with David and spent the nexttwo days with the missionary familiesthere. Much was accomplished in thesetwo days in laying plans for the future ofthe church there an d fo r we threereturning to the U.S.After a quiet flight to Sao Paulo, withhotel re servat ions in the TropicanaHotel there, we left at 8 a.m. fo r theshort flight to Rio, then eight hours toMiami. This was a very meaningful trip forthe three of us. We experienced firsthand the problems of logistics the missionaries encounter every day, even thesimple act of shopping for food. Milk andbread must be bought every day, youmust s tand in line for medical appointments, wait tw o or three hours fo r bustickets, etc. Public transportation inBrazil is very efficient, but i t is crowded.Private tranport is very costly. Low

Below, we visit in front of th eMesquita's lovely home in Brasilia.Missionary David Sanders is secondhrom le f t .

octane regular gasoline (50% alcohol)is about $3.50 pe r gallon. All the missionar ies we ta lked togave us the impression that this wasgood for them also, that we came. It le tthem know that there were people that

w e re i n te re s te d in the ir work and i tmade them as well as us feel that theLord can use al l of us in H is w or k.We were convinced of th e mightyworks of the Lord done through hispeople there in th e past thirty someyears and, as we heard L. David Sanders

say, that he felt th e Lord was notthrough with him yet. Though there aremany cultura l differences, th e missionaries and the people ofthis great countryhave great love and respect for oneanother

The church that is Glenn Park, realizes the need fo r more communication with Christians of other cultures, and as a direct result of our t rips andreports we have made to the churches,ar e increasing th e amount set aside forsuch a purpose. We thank God for the opportunitythat wa s ours, and will share ou rexper iences w ith those who so desire.

Note: If you would like to scheduleone of these gentlemen to share theirtrip experiences and impressions fromthe field, they may be contacted in careof th e Glenn Park Christian Church, 2757S. Glenn, Wichita, KS 67217.

TURMOIL IN CEILANDIAPeace on earth among men of good

w i l l W e have passed some days ofturmoil in our church growth. Whilesome work hard, planting th e Word, cultivating the new bel ieve rs , or inharvesting, Satan manages to s tun t thegrowth in diverse ways. Thus it has beenin Ceilandia t hi s pas t month. Nevertheless, along with barriers to meetingdeadlines, we have also had barriersthrough local preachers, so that the verypurpose and spirit has been challengedby the evil ones.

Even though th e foundations of reinforced concrete ar e in the ground, asth e above ground foundations werebeing put in place, the enemy (a groupof men and boys) came at different timest o b re ak down concrete fo rms an d breakup building blocks and to threaten the

life of the night guard. So for anotherprecious period of weeks, we havestopped construction, continuing to seekthe Lord's direction in how to accomplishH is w or k.As we seek solutions for this specificproject, th e Lord has provided opendoors in tw o othe r l oc atio ns o f thissatellite city of 200,000 people. One is ledby a member of the Brasilia congregat ion and the other by the First Church inGama. Remember, this, our leadingCeilandia project with special prayersThe Lord is working.. .May we enterinto His work We press on against thewiles of Satan and seek to resist him, knowing there is Victory

    CEILANDIABACKWARD - FORWARD

BACKWARD: Looking backward, itseems we can se e that hopes, plans, calculat ion, act ion somehow did not fi ttogether. What can we say?

First: We have been se t back a yearin our development and goals.Second: It is difficult to explain how

the invisible enemy has wayla id us.Third: I t was ou r hope to meet th e

first deadline. After studying these pastmonths fo r the best solution, humane rr or ent er ed in and th e plans andprojec ts , as well as the cooperation ofth e congregation and community, allwent astray and the work came to a stopfo r a lm o st f ou r m on th s.

BUT NOWFORWARD: Your prayers continueto empowerThe construct ion deadl ine has been

revised fo r October '81.The deadline for the completion of

th e construction is July '81.The financial plan has been revised:

Funds bor rowed through ass is tance of the Mission, Norton, KansasChr ist ian Church and other volunteerchurchesThe local congregation is in process

of reorganization and putting in order ,with plans for revival .The conclusion is that we are going

forward in Ceilandia an d on to otherareas in the growing capital of Brazil.

    KEEP PRAYING AND GIVING

Brazil Christian Mission is sorry tohave to announce the resignation ofSteve and Patty McAfeeeffective May 1.Because of th e difficulty of obtaining avi sa to Brazil (it is not impossible, bu ttakes time and requires th e assurance ofliving link and service link support whilein Brazil), Steven and Patty havedecided that they will seek a ful l-timechurch in the U.S.

We of the Brazil Chris t ian Missionar e sorry that it ha s to be that way. There ar e many places they could workhere. Steve already knows the languageand understands th e people better thanwe wh o were not ra ised here , but we aresure tha t the Lord will use them inwhatever situation they find themselves.

Steve is asking that his supportingchurches (those that had promised andwere sending monthly to them) transfertheir support to Philip, who is already onthe field and working. In this way youwill s ti ll be a part of th e evangelization ofBrazil and be blessed by progress madehere

A ft er over 25 years of being affiliated with B.C.M. itisn t easy to separate. Aftergiving our hearts and lives to the work of preaching and teaching, and all the support work

connected with a mission, we find it di ffi cu lt to make the change. After the experience ofprolonged close personal relationships we find even the thought of severance unwelcome. After many years of residence in Brazil, where weleave two maiTied children,we find ithardto make th e move . But with a firm c onv ic tio n of doing right we do hereby submit ourresignation. It is impossible to express sufficient gratitude to those who have served on the B.C.M.before 1970, Board of Representatives, and since then. Board of Trustees, who gave andcontinue to give voluntarily and freely of time, counsel and of their own resources to makeour position as missionaries possible. To th e faithful supporters, many of whom have heldthe ropes of prayer and financial sustenance the w ho le 20 years we have been affiliated asmissionaries, our t han kful ness is com pl et el y inadequate. We pray believing in thesufficiency of God's providence for His reward in your lives.Brethren in Christ in Brazil have been called into the Master's service. We bid farewell,bu t hold them up before God's throne for His perfect work of grace to be done in theirlives. We trust completely in your taking care of the d et ai ls of our separation, and of carrying

on th e work in progress. So , as of December 20, we release all responsibilitieswe have beencarrying, wishing you God's speed with your share of the Lord's vineyard.Sincerely yours in Christ,

Philip McAfeeFinally, be strong in the Lord and inthe sfrengfh of his might. Eph. 6:10. Thiswas the key verse for our XVI area wideyouth rally. Wehadan average 400 people

for eachsession, from 14 different congregations. Our speakers spokeon thepowerof prayer, praise, testimony and sanctifi-c a t i o n

As vice-president Tabita and I went toBrasilia a week aheadinordertohelpwithlocalarrangements and preparations. TheBrasilia youth group worked very hardputting in longhours in order to be readyforour visitors. Wewerepreparedfor500outside people. The DepartmentofHealthand Education loaned us 500 mattressesand several members of the church loanedmoney in order to buy food ahead I hadthe privilege of leading a Bible knowledgetest. The winner was a young manstudying law, member of the Pires do Riocongregation. Second and third placewere won by Brasilia youth.

We many times underestimate thestrength we have in the Lord, and liveliveswithout excitement and adventures for theLord. Our missionaryBruce Colson gave

    - Mli ii ir , Bn

Philand Tabita infront of the gate that leads to their apartment in Goiania.an excellent sermon on the power ofsanctification. God beingholy, and sanctifying everything that has to do with Him,we then forget that we too must be holy, and this then divides the church becausewe do not live lives worthy of our calling. One of the national preachers gave asermon in which he_wsua ized the difference between a ceremony and a true

service All of us need to be aware of thisdanger and must remember th e teachings of Jesus concerning the leaven ofth e PhariseesGoiania is an exciting city and itspeople are veryadventurous. Our youthgroups in Setor Fama an d in Setor UriasMagalhaes are constantly doing things. They are visiting, celebrating birthdays,

Left youth carried 50 0 mattresses/o r sleeping, not to mention stoves, pans, food, and all the things needed tofeedthat many Lower left, Tabita and Lindahelped receive and take registrations.Lower right, Phil led the Bible Knowledge test at the Area Rally.

having meetings, going on picnics, andsinging for the Lord. The Brasilian peoplelove to sing, more so than the Americans. We are always having a difficult timekeeping up with the new choruses thatappear. I do praise God that many of thenew songs and choruses are scripturesongs. At the rally we learned two newones Psalms 96 and Daniel 2:20. Thesetwo passages ar e powerful and memorizedfor good because of the song. There aremany other passages being sung also.

Tabita and I have been adapting toGoiania quite well. I have been workingwith Tom Fife at the Fama church andhelping with preparations of the newextension in Urias Magalhaes. These twocongregations have cooperated in all theirprograms. The Fama church can praiseGod for its progressive growth andmaturity In Christ Tabita and I studied thelast course offered by the Theologicaleducation by extension, so that Icould beprepared to teach next year at UriasMagalhaes.

I have been meeting inhomes to studywith people that have expressed a desireto receive Christ as their Saviour November 8 is to be the first baptism as a resultand in the new bapti stry just built TheFama church had been using the baptistryof a neighbor church but because of itsown need we gathered ou r resources an dbuilt a baptistry. Itcost over$600dollars tobuild this little and simple baptistry

The Urias congregation had beenrenting what used to be a smallstore, butwhen the contract (1 year) expired, wewere asked to move out, so now we aremeeting in homes again. This is rather inconvenient since on Sunday evenings wehave an average of30 people present, andnone of our homes are large enough tomeet this requirement. We are hoping to
