THE CHURCH THAT MEETS AT THEIR HOUSEAquilla and Priscilla, along with the

church that meets at their house , sentgreetings by Paul s letter to the brethren in the Irfrd at Corinth (I Cor. 16:19).Our concept ofthe nature of the Churchtoday must allow for those groups of believers, who living in somewhat isolatedcircumstances, no t of their own choosing, usually, still, under the leadership ofthe Holy Sp ir it, live pious and saintlylives awaiting the return of the LiordJesus (see II Peter 3:11,12). The Sandersand the Brasilia church have adopted asan evangelistic technique the beginningof house churches, and at present haveeight such.Alvorada, Goias

The new church in th e farming areaof Alvorada in the s ta te of Goias ismeeting from house to house in thatcommunity. Although seed plantingbegan several years ago, las t year 17were baptized in this community and 5others om t he a re a because of theirhouse to hou se w it ne ss . The churchthere continues to meet regularly bothmid-week and on th e first day of th ewee k in thehouse of believers, or att imes in the front yard. (See picture.)Gnvft I (satellite cHy of Brasilia)

Thehouse is full and running overis the word from the meeting house inGuara I, satell i te town closest toBrasilia. Last September regular meetings w ere begun (s ee Nov embe r-December issueB.C.M.) in th e home of afamily of Christians about 8 miles fromthe Brasilia house of worship. At firstonly members of the church were presen t bu t soon neighbors began to respondt o t h e calls and vis i ts . Famil ie s and theirchOdren began to at tend and crowded into sing happy choruses and l ea rn aboutthe Saviour. In January 3 converts werebaptized showing better results than inthree other older church building cent e r ed works . These bel ievers haveBible study every Tuesday night and ar ebeing strengthened in their fai th by witnessing regularly.

Brasil iaYoung married couples have experi

enced various house meetings lastyear in the Sanders home. Two brothersof th e BrasCia church wh o marr ied l as tyear are accepting the house churchchallenge as a means of church extensionand planting new churches and as ameans of developing their nfew youngmarried couples class. From this we seethe beginning of a new step for the growing church in Brasilia.Luziania (state of Goias, just across th estate line from Brasilia)

Luziania, although following the customary services of the traditional churchhas i niti ated two different t ypes ofhouse churches .One of these led by a leader of th elocal congregation meets in the home ofone o f the Christ ians on th e other side oftown. Here the Bible is taught and thegospel is preached with the pastor sometimes visiting the activities. Thus another area has a con ti nua l w i tne ss . Th i sone is a preaching-teaching service opento th e community.

The other house serviceis a n a ft ernoon Sunday School type of servicewhere the public is also invi ted. Thisaimed at attracting the children of thecommunity and through them theirparents . This work is also directed byone of th e elder s of th e local Luzianiacongregation.Ocidental City

The Tiago Moreira home is on a farmsome 3 miles removed from a small non-progressive town at the edge ofthe largecounty n am ed F ormo so . C ou nt ies are

called municipios in Brazil. It was hisfamily and that of his wife that formedthe Nova Gloria Church. And it was hiswife s father and mother and herbrothers and their families that formedth e nucleus of th e Sao Luiz church, andlater formed th e nucleus of th e Alvoradacongreation. Since Tiago moved in 1967to Mata Azul he has fai thfully gatheredhis family together on.a daily basis forreading ofGod'swordand prayer. Therear e 11 children. He didn t read the bookCheaper by the Dozen In fact hisreading ability is almost totally throughattending church services where ahymnal and Bible are heavily used.Large families are common in Brazil.Joel, the oldest boy. began preaching inFebruary 1974 after a spiritual retreathe attended at the camp grounds inBrazilia. Since August of that year heha s been active in th e Ceres church, living in the McAfee s home takingcare ofit while they were in the U.S. until July1976. Schirley, the oldest daughter, whoworked in th e McAfee s bookstore whilestudying inCeres, wasactivein teachingin th e Ceres Church Sunday School. During that timeshe married a Goiania BibleInsitute student . Sch ir le y and JoseAlves. he r husband, ar e now, a long withEdvaldo Cambui and his family workinginevangelism and planting of a church inRubiataba, where already 18 have beenbaptized, and new decisions are beingmade right along.Others of Tiago s children havegrown up. One daughter married an unbeliever and left the church, causing adeep estrangement with her father. Oneson sewed wild oats for awhile, butmarried and now lives and works on hisfather s farm. Their first child (Sampson)is the present joy of the clan. Samuel repented of his waywardness and soughtreconciliation with his f at he r a nd withhis Lord. Jose Alves (his brother-in-law)was helpful in this change in Samuel 'slife. His wife was evident ly deeply impressed with this change, and has apparently been fed in spirit as she has participated inthe family meetings around theword of God and singing Christian songs.Tiago and all the children have beautifulvoices. And, too, th e younger children, seeing the example of their father, andlistening to the messages, perhaps downa corn r ow wit h a hoe in their hands, orover the wash tub doing th e familylaundry, or working with the cattle inthe corral (milking, etc., a family cooperative project) have a beginning faith.

So when Carol and Dale and Joelvisited Tiago and family early inDecember last year there was rejoicingin the Lord. Two of the girls andSamuel s wife were buried in th e creekwaters on the farm in Christian baptismto be un it ed with Christ fo r remission ofsins and to receive th e g if t of the Holy

Spirit. That now makes eight baptizedbelievers in the church in Taigo shouse .CoaclusioD

House churches ar e being planted.Pray for this outreach. Several workersvisited Santo Antonio, on January 22 tostudy the field and possibilities of a newhouse church in that city also just ou tside of th e Fede r al D is tr ic t. Ruth and Mari a Sande rs we rein the U.S. on furlough.

Ben Alexander, of E.S.P. ministries,Corbett, Oregon, and Raimundo Donato,a Brethren preacher from Macapa,Amapa Brazilwere our special speakers. Both men were spi ri ti st mediums for atime, each practicing the occult arts for10 to 15years. Their personal testimonyof conversion to Christ an d thepreaching ministry , their Biblicalmessages warning of the dangers involved in seemingly innocent practiceswere a great help to we who attendedthe conference ^imundo gave helpfulinstruction on how to witness to practicing spiritists, and to people who aregreatly influenced, or have strong leanings toward spiri tism, to lead them toChri st and a Biblical faith.

There was ta lk a t Belem, and communication by letters beforehand, concerning the possibility of Dr. Donald A.McGavran, dean emeritus and professorof the School of World Missions,Pasadena, California, coming to Br azilfor conferences on church growth. Acommittee was formed, including DaleMcAfee, to make preparat ions towardmaking this a reality in July 1978.Woodrow Phillips, president of San Jose(California) Bible College and Carro llOsborne, professor at Harding College,Ser cy , Arkansas, will be specialspeakers for the next Brazil MissionariesConference - Convention to be held inRio de Janeiro January 5-11, 1978.

On e of th e members of th e church inCeres is Dona Maria Jorceiina. she ha s 3children, Amador , Onofre, andJorcelino. She has a husband, bu t lefthim last year a fter he t ried to s trangleher, an experience which was a sort ofculmination of many beatings and abusess he a nd th e children had received fromhim.Dona Mar ia had accepted Jesus asher Sav io r while we were in th e Stateson furlough. She is trying hard to live byfaith and trust Him, she was baptized inFebruary with 4 others here in Ceres.

Dona Maria needs help She is livingin a house provided by the CatholicChurch for indegent families. She suffersfrom a heart disease and has very littlestrength so that even the stand-by of allpoor women here , washing clothes forother people, is a task she can't do. Theoldest boy suffers from a very rare formof anemia and is in the hospital, at thiswriting, in Goiania for the third time(that I know of) to have extensive bloodtransfusions and treatment. We took herto Goiania last fall to put him in thehospital and he returned a li tt le betterbut th e Doc to r her e in Ceres told methat he needed thousands of dollarsworth of blood tr ansfusions etc. (if itwere to be paid for, which it isn't whatmedical help he receives is charity) andthat even given the best of treatment hewill never be well; he will always havethese given c ri se s and need medicala t t en t ion

The d oc to rs h er e in Ceres andGoiania have taken care of her an d th eboys completely free because they knowshe has no resources . The people of theChurch help out with food, but we supplymo st o f their food as well a s f und s fo r herto make the trip to Goiania.

She is in a s i tuat ion that seemsimpossible to us. She can't work, has tolive by asking help from others, isdiscouraged and blue and can 't really seemuch hope for betterment in the future.Sh e n eed s to be in Goiania where itwould be easier to ge t medical attentionfo r Amador

W e have never asked fo r funds tohelp support families because we havefelt it is best in teach them to helpthemselves, bu t this is on e case wherethere just doesn't seem to be any way forher to help herself She does know howto weave homespun, and as it is one ofth e folk ar ts of Brazil we would like tobuy a loom tind set it up in theEvangelical Cooperative center herewhere there are classes in sewing, crochet, knitting, classes for expectantmot he rs a nd once a month a medicalclinic. We hope that by having a loomwhere she could us e it Dona Maria wouldbe able to do some weaving. It would bew here she could us e it. Dona Mariawould be able to do some weaving,(which brings good prices here now) andalso teach some others the a rt ofweaving. It would be an experiment, but

    COMMENTSFROM CAROL

It doesn 't seem possible that it isalready the last of May. Irene, Sam, andDan are happy t he re a re only 3 moreweeks of school and then they will havethe month of July as a vacation (midsemester) . It h as b ee n difficult fo r th etwins to ge t back into their s tudies in th ePortuguese language. They have classesonly in th e afternoons from 12:30 - 4:30but have homework every day somornings a re spent with Mother, f ir streading a lesson in English and thendoing the homework from school.

Sam has finally begun to understandhis Portuguese reading and did well onhis first set of exams. In first grade theyare required t o wri te in cursive (whichthey learn in kindergarten), and on mostof their test it was necessary to copy thequestions off the board - leave space forthe answers and then give the correctresponses. Quite a task for first graders.I think. So we just give thanks that theyar e progressing and look forward to th etime when they will be able to do theirassignments with more facility

Onebatch, even to myuntrained eye, wasn't very good; it wasvery coarse and not very clean, but Da.Maria assured us it was good for somethings.Sheused this forher first projectto ge t the feel of th e loom. It seems thateach one has it s own peculiarities, and soshe had to see what it would do befo reshe made a piece of cloth that will do formen's pants, etc. The Brazilians call it acorte or a cut of cotton, and they do

    THOUGHTS TO PONDERSelected)

If a man love not the immigrant inhis own country , whom he has seen, howshall he love the foreigner in the heathencountry , whom he h as not s een?

Our prayers for the evangelizationofthe worldare but bitter irony so longas we give only our superfluity and thendraw ba ck b efo re th e s ac ri fi ce o fourselves . We are saved because of pastmissionary efforts. What of the cominggeneration?

If God wants you on the missionfield, neither your money nor yourprayers will ever prove an acceptablesubsti tute.
