ANDHRA MEDICAL COLLEGE- GRANITE JUBILEE CELEBRATIONS(IT DIDN'T JUST ORIGINATE, IT EVOLVED)AMC-An unquenching

flame set along theblue coast of Visakhapatnam, on thesand hills, igniting many brains &charging them with passion to serveand to enlighten many lives, redeeming them from their sicknessand suffering.

The Rajah of Panagal building, houses the 6th oldest premiermedical institutions of India, theAndhra Medical College, affiliated toDr.NTR University of HealthSciences.

Medical education in this citystarted with the establishment ofVictoria Diamond Jubilee MedicalSchool in 1902, offering L.M&SDiploma, with the support ofMaharajah Sir Goday NarayanaGajapathi Rao andMaharani Lady GodayChittijanakiammah. Laterthe School was shifted tothe present Anatomyblock. Finally, in July1923, the college wasformally opened asVizagapatam MedicalCollege by The HonorableDiwan Bahadur RajahPanugantiRamarayaningar, the thenChief Minister of Madras,TN state and Minister ofhealth with CaptainFrederick Jasper Anderson,IMS, officiating as the firstprincipal.

The first batch had 32students. Cottages said to havebeen built specially for Englishpatients of the District CivilHospital were given asaccomodation for students.Dr.M.V.Krishna Rao & Dr. P.Manikyala Rao of this batch had aunique distinction of being studentand teacher simultaneously. Theuntiring efforts of Dr. M.V.KrishnaRao & Dr. Sundararammurthy andthe head clerk Sri S. V. Srinivasa Raowere responsible for the college inachieving an independent status. Thecollege when affiliated to AndhraUniversity in 1940 was renamed asAndhra Medical College by the thenVice Chancellor of AU C.R.Reddy.Since then the college has beenflourishing and exploring newadvances in health care andstretching out to secure the sick.

Major Dr. John A.W.Ebden, M.D,M.S, F.R.C.S, the second principal ofthe college was highly qualifiedphysician & surgeon and also thechief architect of the college in itsformative years. He was a keensportsman and is said to have eventaken the spade and shovel himselfalong with many of the staff andstudents to level the nearby Sandyhilland make it into a ground. Thecollege paid tributes to hisenthusiasm by naming the sports

arenaafterhim as"MajorEbden" sportscomplex. He wascommemorated byconducting a Crickettournament, inviting teams fromcolleges of Andhra & Madras states.Incidentally, this tournament was aforerunner of Cricket activity inCoastal Andhra.

Dr. T. Bhaskara Menon, M.D,D.Sc, FRCP of Pathology and Dr.Krishna Rao, FRCS of Anatomy werelegendary teachers of this college. They are revered to this day andhave their respective departmentsnamed after them.

This day,the college comprises 34departments with dedicated facultytraining 164 PGs and 200 UGs everyyear along. The teaching hospitals

associatedwith AMC

are KingGeorge Hospital,

Hospital for Mental care, RaniChandramani Devi Hospital ,Government Hospital for Chest andCommunicable diseases, RegionalEye Hospital and The ENT Hospital.

The college has always been leadby diligent principals, right from itsfirst principal Dr. F.J.Anderson to theexisting, 48th principal, our belovedDr. Kalpana Subramaniam.

The first principal Dr.F.J.Anderson who was also professorof Anatomy and Surgery, designedthe emblem which exhibits thecollege grandeur. The deep bluebackground reflects the serene Bay

of Bengal suggesting the depth ofknowledge imparted by the college. The redcross, an accepted sign ofambulance services stands for themotto of the medical profession.Trident is a sceptre of power held byNeptune, the Lord of seas. It is aninvocation to the Lord of seas toguard the college. Serpent stands forknowledge and wisdom. Its windingaround the Trident signifies that thepower of the college arises out ofknowledge and wisdom. The dolphinin the emblem reminds us of theDolphin nose hill nearby, denotingpermanence of AMC. The sheaf ofwheat denotes prosperity. "Ne QuidNimis" our motto implies "Let there benothing in excess" pertaining tobalance in everything.

The Alma Mater of AMC isvast, prestigious, and evergrowing. Doctors manufacturedin this college are well knownfor their all round excellence. It includes legends like Dr.Bendapudi VenkataSatyanarayana-'the doyen ofDermatology 'Dr. VulimiriRamalingaswam, Dr. P.Brahmayya Sastry, Dr.Chavali Vyaghreswarudu-

I'm Sure Of It !!!(ONCE AN AMCIAN,ALWAYS AN AMCIAN..)

Well, how to start? After twobusy and boring years of hardwork, I ended up with anaverage rank of 1000 plus, not atall a good rank to even think ofgetting an admission in the bestcollege of Andhra Pradesh -ourAndhra Medical College. But, Iended up landing in this shrine(Thanks to my 'BC' reservationthough many curse it).

Yeah, by fortune (or) fate, Istepped into this college. The feeling of being ragged hauntedme for the first few days, but hey! Everybody gets over it soon,so did I. Soon, I started enjoying even the stink of a cadaver.Wearing an apron, I walked with pride (even though I didn'tenter the clinical, I enjoyed the feeling). The culture of medicos, the feeling of being part of a fraternity, is addictive. The aura ofdoctors and the aroma of medicines, irresistible.

The best thing : I get to be a part of this college. Its richheritage fills me with pride. This is a college, impeccable in itsbeauty (a beach view, beat that!), and standards. One cannothelp but admire it.

Time flies and you'll never know. It's time for exams, the timeto prove my (our) mettle. The atmosphere has surely changedme (well, it can bring out the fragrance of hidden talent) and I'msure to fly with bright colours. Waiting eagerly to get to the otherside of the hill….Ooo…. way to go… I'm sure this is a feelingevery fresher experiences, everyone who was once a first year-AMCIAN .

TIPS FOR SUCCESSFULPRACTICE

Watch your body language. Facepatients. Smile. Don'trush. But,walk fast. Don't hunchyour shoulders.Maintain eye contact. Make aconscious attempt to keep youreyes focused on the eyes of yourpatients. Maintaining eye contacttells your patients that you arepaying attention to them.Say one encouraging thing to everyone (if possible). "You're doingbetter." "Your kidney function is improving." "Everything looksstable." It's often difficult for patient's to tell whether they'reimproving or not. Even simple words of encouragement can liftsomeone's spirit.Get to the hospital ridiculously early. Wake up at 4 or 5 AM.Getting in early has advantages - it's easier to concentrate andaccomplish tasks if there are fewer people around.Time yourself. Set a specific time to spend with each patient: say,5 - 15 minutes with a follow up patient, and 30 minutes with a newpatient.Make a game of remembering names. Attempt to memorize asmany of your patients' names as you can. It's a skill worthimproving. Try memorizing the names of all the patients you see.Connect with other people who are on call with you. There's acertain friendly familiarity that comes with being one of the fewpeople working in the hospital. Also, you may need them forconsults, and they may need you.

Came to know a few days back thatthe 'Granite Jubilee' of Andhra

Medical College is going to be celebratedon 19th July2013. Thefeeling couldnot be expressed inwords, the joy knewno bounds when Irealized that I had been a part ofthe Silver, Golden, Platinum and now theGranite Jubilee of our college. Being part of thisgreat institution where we entered as shapelessrocks and came out as beautiful sculpturescarved out by our teachers is somethingphenomenal.

I wanted to figure out not only in thecelebrations but also in the souvenir - So Ithought I would scribble a few words and titled itas 'Granite Gladiators'.

Entering into this medical college is just likebreathing in the mother's womb on the very firstday of life as an unicellular organism. Later as

hours, days, weeks, months and yearspassed by She fondled us, caressed us

and nurtured us to become'Gladiators' to fight our battles in the

Colosseum of life and emerge triumphant -As symbols of the Noblest profession with

all the qualities of a kind doctor-sympathy, empathy, and humanityof great properties just like the 'Bay

of Bengal' on the shores of whichour AMC is concreted.

The proudest moment ofour life is nothing but

emerging outas an'AMCIAN'and to don

the cap wherever we are in the world. Our rootslie in every nook and corner of the world and werepresent the culture and heritage of our motherAMC.

As the saying goes "Institution is greater thanthe individual" we have to strive hard to keep our

mother's head high and not to bow down in anysituation of adversity or calamity.

The reason why I sketched this article wasnot only to pay rich tributes to our mother AMCas well as our teachers but also to say that allthe children of the mother are not alike. Thereare many AMCIANS who have the Everest ofGlory but there are a few who are really indoldrums and abysmal depths with claws

clinging to the walls and battling with their backsagainst the walls.

My appeal is to try to identity these brothersand sisters and lend them a helping hand andmake our mother AMC shed 'tears of joy'.

We can repay her by imparting solace andbliss on her which in itself is a rich tribute.

Let us keep the ball rolling. Conclusion :I asked God to keep our AMCIANS happy and

God said "Okay, only for four days"I said "Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter"God said "No, only for three days"I said "Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow"God said "No, only for two"I said "Day and Night"God said "No, only one day"I said "Okay, Everyday"God laughed and said 'OKAY'.

I swear to fulfill, to the best of my ability andjudgment, this covenant:I will apply, for the benefit of the sick, all measureswhich are required, avoiding those twin traps ofovertreatment and therapeutic nihilism.I will remember that there is art to medicine aswell as science, and that warmth, sympathy, and understanding may outweigh thesurgeon's knife or the chemist's drug.I will not be ashamed to say "I know not," norwill I fail to call in my colleagues when theskills of another are needed for a patient's recovery.I will respect the privacy of my patients, for their problems are notdisclosed to me that the world may know. Most especially must I treadwith care in matters of life and death. If it is given me to save a life, allthanks. But it may also be within my power to take a life; this awesomeresponsibility must be faced with great humbleness and awareness of myown frailty. Above all, I must not play God.I will remember that I do not treat a fever chart, a cancerous growth, buta sick human being, whose illness may affect the person's family andeconomic stability. My responsibility includes these related problems, if Iam to care adequately for the sick.I will prevent disease whenever I can, for prevention is preferable to cure.I will remember that I remain a member of society, with special obligationsto all my fellow human beings, those sound of mind and body as well asthe infirm. If I do not violate this oath, may I enjoy life and art, respected while I liveand remembered with affection thereafter. May I always act so as topreserve the finest traditions of my calling and may I long experience thejoy of healing those who seek my help.

Proud to be in MEDICAL PROFESSION!

Drink more water.Try drinking atregular intervals - say, every threehours. Set a timer to go off everythree hours, and drink at least eightounces of water. You mightdiscover that this improves yourmental acuity and performance.Take humour in your daily activitiesand your practise. After all,we arethe ones who coined 'kissing'disease,'mask'face or a'strawberry' tongue.Don't overburden yourself.Though,we vow to theHIPPOCRATIC OATH that we attend to the need ofpatient at any hour,we all know that it is better to helpmore people in the long run or treating them effectivelywith a fresh mind than to attend merely for the sake ofattending.Ofourse, emergencies and placebos areexceptions.

"To live long, live slowly. - Cicero'Get outside at least once a day. Vow to get out for atleast five or ten minutes every day (weather permitting,of course). Staying in the hospital too long can makeanyone claustrophobic.

The saying goes-"Never go to a doctor whose office plantshave died"

Consciously relax. Doctors are often at their moststressed when on call. Every few minutes, relax yourfacial muscles. Let your shoulders drop.

"If you do not believe in yourself how can you expectother people to do so? If you have not an abiding faith inthe profession you cannot be happy in it-Sir William Osler"

Hello Sir : Firstly heartycongratulations on yoursuccess. How were yourfeelings when you cameto know theresult?(Cracking PGentrance in first attempt)Did you expect this?

Thank you. I Was really happy.Actually I didn't expect it. Iexpected my rank to bearound 50-100 .

It's tough to managetime during Internship. How did you managestudying as well as yourduty as an Intern? (Anytips?)

Absolutely not! It wasn'ttough. The problem is thatmany of us do not believe wecan get through the exam thefirst time and that duringInternship we get too tired tostudy. Of course taking rest isequally important but 4-5 hrsin the evening and 2-3 hrs inthe morning for studying aresuffice.

What's your study plan?(Did you take any PGcoaching when you arean UG)?

(If not, do you advice such

practices? Dothey really help)?

No coachingrequired as an UG.My idea was toread theappropriate topicsat the appropriatetime. The problemwith the PG bit books is thatby the time you finish tworeadings you get bored andfeel routine with the bits for thethird time. So, a good planwould be a complete readingof the bit book by the time ofour entrance exam and thatshould be done duringInternship.

How to prepare Sir? (Canyou suggest any book, inparticular?)

Concentrate on standardtextbooks in U.G and go solelywith the bit books duringinternship. But for easycompletion and revision of bitbooks you need to be verysound with the standard texts-Harrison, Bailey and Love etc.

Two hypotheticalquestions Sir

a. Suppose, if you haven'tsucceeded in the first

attempt, what wouldhave been yournext step?(Self preparation?Or would youchoose any PGprogram? Andwhy? ) I Joined DAMS,

Delhi after Internship; thinkingI wouldn't get a rank in APPGbut was a bit disappointed byits teaching methodology.Coaching centers dump a lotof information. After all, whatmatters is how much weremember after 6 months ofcoaching and if it's the sameas after self-preparation, thenwhat is the use of privatecoaching?b. Suppose, if we get a seat

in a branch that we areinterested in but, not sostandard College and aseat in a branch we arenot interested but in aCollege of our choice...How should we proceed?

It all depends upon how muchan individual wants to becompromised. All that mattersat the end is how satisfied andhow happy we are.

What is the specialty ofyour interest? (Anyparticular reason?)

Gen medicine; not muchinterested in surgicalbranches.

What are your futureplans?

(Any super specialization /interest to settle in foreigncountry / others)(Big Smile…:) Super

specialization …!!! My thoughtsnever went that far yet!! Afraidof USMLE steps at PLAB sojust wanted to settle here…Thank you Sir..wishing you

the best all your way..ALL THE VERY BEST

Thank you.. my bestwishes to all my juniors !

ANDROID MEDICAL APPSMEDSCAPE (SPECIALLY FOR DOCTORS)Medscape was just recently released on the Android Market and hasalready become the number one downloaded medical app for theAndroid platform. The amount of free content provided by Medscapeis absolutely mind numbing and seems to continuously growwith each update.Medscape is a great drug referenceapp but it does more than an adequate job ofproviding clinical pearls from the most common toless common pathologies. On top of this, theapplication has instructional medicalprocedure videos and pictures.Standard Dictations(SPECIALLY FOR INTERNS)The tedious work of internship is bothchallenging and overwhelming. For thoseof us who are soon-to-be interns an applike Standard Dictations is a welcomedanxiolytic. This app has basic templates to readwhile dictating. Everything from admissionorders to discharge summaries, along withnumerous exams, procedures, and severaldifferent types of H&P formats for differenthealth care settings. Of note, many EMRs offersimilar templates. So, residents who work with arobust EMR may not have as much need for this app.Eponyms (SPECIALLY FOR MEDICOS)Eponyms are the bane of many students. Eponyms are medicalphrases or pathologies that are named after key people, such as"Beck's Triad". There are hundreds, if not thousands, of them, and it'snear impossible to keep them all straight.

This app contains over 1,700 of the most popular Eponyms and is agreat resource to both help refresh your knowledge, and to also useas a reference material.

MEDICAL APPS FOR "i"MEDSCAPE:Medscape is the top free iPad medical app.

It has done a great job of building their app specifically forthe iPad. This is evident with the comprehensive

search functioning, allowing you to quickly lookup a drug or how to do a lumbar puncture

with lightening speed. The app also enables users to have

offline access to its contents. One of the more subtle surprises ofthis app is the ability to look upherbal drugs - something you'll bepressed to find with any otherfree drug reference too.MedPage TodayTo those not familiar, MedPageToday is an online medical newsservice for physicians and

healthcare professionals. The siteenables physicians to keep up to

date on breaking medical news, aswell as providing CME activities within

the app.If MedPage Today can optimize the user

interface on their drug monographs and diseasepathology information, this app could eventually rival

the Medscape iPad app.Sorry symbian users, the editors are users of android & 'i' only..

And Dan Brown does it again;again being the keyword.Inferno is yetanother masterpiece from the master story teller. He narrates a thrillingadventure of the well known(fictitious,of course) Harvard symbologistRobert Langdon, accompanied by a born with 298 IQ geniusbeauty,Sienna Brooks, both of them play key parts in an impendingcatastrophe ,which might affect the entire world(as always). At the coreof all this havoc is a brilliant scientist-cum-transhumanist,who throwsan artful symbolic puzzle to those who come in his way which RobertLangdon is recruited to solve.

From Florence to the ever crowded Istanbul,we are virtuallytransported along with the characters trapped in the unpredictable, butoh-so-interesting story line. There ,all the characters talk likeencyclopedia and there are lengthy descriptions of the variousplaces, where an average reader may get impatient and bored ! Youcan always skip the pages and get through with the story, avoiding theinformation overload. But if history and science are your things,Infernois the perfect read. - K.SRI BHARATHI, 2011

"TECHNOLOGY THAT CHANGES LIVES"

Khaled Hosseini's third novel " Andthe mountains Echoed" is a book aboutties. A tale of all the different kinds ofrelationships one can think of - Siblings,Parent-child, Master-servant, offorbidden love and broken families.Heshows us both sides of a coin, thebeauty as well as the burden ofloyalty.Loyalty that comes thoughrelation of blood or words.

The book centres around a brother-sister, Abdullah and Pari and whathappens after the fateful day when thesister is sold away to a wealthy family .Itspans generations and traverses countries. It can rather be seenas a collection of several small stories linked together by loosethreads. The linking together of all the characters and subplotswas a let down and the initiall few chapters seem to drag abit. The story is told through too many voices and it is a littleconfusing for the reader.

It differs from the author's previous books in that it is lesscentred around Afghanistan. There is war but the authorfocuses more on the issues of health workers in aid of thevictims rather than the atrocities of war.It beautifully portrayshow, out of no choice people adapt to a different world, a differentculture, yet stick to their roots.

It will give you a glimpse of the ugly side of the world, howeverthere are parts which instill hope and speak of compassion. Ialso felt that the book tells us not to judge people, that eachhave their own twisted tales.Slow and dark, Read only if you area fan of the author's works. -Snigdha K, 2011
