SANDING TIPS 1. Don’t use coarser than you need to The coarser the sandpaper you use, the more you sand off. But at the same time, the coarser the paper, the greater the surface scratching and the more finishing work you will have to do with finer papers. 2. ‘Test-sand’ your job before you start The finer the finish you require, the more it pays to start with finer grade abrasives. 3. Double the grit size for each successive job Many jobs require you to progress from a coarse to a finer grade of sandpaper to achieve the desired degree of finish. In each case the rule of thumb is to double the grit number for each successive stage, until the desired degree of finish. For example you could start with 60grit and follow with 120grit and 240grit for finishing. 4. Straight line sanding scratches least Orbital or circular sanding leaves whirl marks. Where the finish is not critical, and on metal, this may not be so important. But where a smooth finish is required e.g. preparation for paint, varnish or polyurethane, oiling and staining, straight line sanding is the preferred method. Go with the grain. If you sand across the grain, scratches appear more prominently. 5. Careful with hand and finger pressures While sanding use constant, even pressure. Sanding with a piece of sandpaper in your fingers can lead to trough marks on soft surfaces because it is very easy to underestimate the pressure you can exert with your fingers alone. Use a sanding block with fine grade sandpaper to get a smooth, even finish. 6. Use a Painters Tack Cloth to remove sanding particles and residue. SAFETY WARNINGS 1. All power tools should be unplugged when changing sheets or discs. 2. Always wear safety glasses to protect eyes from dust and flying objects. 3. Do not breathe dust or expose skin to dust created by sanding or grinding. Dust created from some ground material may contain hazardous chemicals. 4. Follow all safety procedures in your power tool operator’s manual.
