Sandpaper is defined as a sheet of paper or cloth with an abrasive material attached to one side. Early sandpaper was made with natural materials - such as seashells, sand, or seeds - attached to paper with either glue or varnish and had a relatively short useful life. Modern sandpaper is made with man-made, synthetic abrasives that are available in a wide variety of products that are more versatile and durable. There are a number of purposes for sandpaper: t To remove a material from a surface - such as finish or paint t To remove mill marks and flaws in raw wood t To remove sanding marks - in preparation for, or to complete a finish t To make a surface rough - in preparation for glue t To make small changes to the shape of the surface There are four components of sandpaper - the backing, the bonding agent, the abrasive particles, and the form - each contributing to the use and function - and ultimate success of sanding. While the basics remain the same, the manufacturers of sandpaper will create unique and proprietary formulas and designs for each component to improve their products and remain competitive. THE BACKING The backing used for sandpaper is as individual as the task the sandpaper will be performing. The backing needs to accommodate the heft of large abrasive particles; stay intact with wet sanding; withstand intense friction heat and pressure of machine sanders; and flex to contours when needed. PAPER Paper backing is the most common and most economical. Paper is rated A through F by weight, with A being the lightest and F the heaviest. Light weight papers (A-C) are typically used for hand sanding. Power sanders (disks and sheets) may use any of the weights. Belt sanders use only the heaviest (E- F) weight papers. Some lighter weight papers may be treated with chemicals to be waterproof and will be marked appropriately. FIBER Fiber backing is made by fusing several sheets of paper together by a process called "vulcanizing". The result is a very strong paper backing used for fiber or vulcanized discs. Fiber backing is not typically waterproof.
