THE MEANING OF OUR BAPTISM

L ent is the time of year that we devote to scrutinizing our lives in the light of our baptism into the death and resurrection of Jesus.

Today’s readings are a nice shorthand catechism of what our baptized lives mean. As Noah passed through the waters of the flood to a covenant with God, so did we enter into a covenant, a promised relationship with God through our baptism. The psalm reminds us that if we truly keep the cove-nant, the way of life God expects us to follow will not be a burden, but a source of love and truth. Peter’s letter gives one explanation of what our baptism means: it is an appeal that we make to God for a clear con-science. How do we obtain this clear conscience? The words that Jesus proclaims immediately following his temptation show us the way: “Repent and believe in the gospel.” It might be a good spiritual exer-cise to keep these readings before us throughout the entire season of Lent, a means to help us return to a life lived in our baptismal promis-es. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION

F asting may be a priority in your Lenten spring‑cleaning regimen. Almost every religious tradition recognizes that fasting is a key to

heightened spiritual awareness. You know this from your own experience. When you are engaged in a hobby, painting a room, keeping vigil near a delivery room, or standing watch at a sickbed, you may simply forget to eat. What you are doing so fills you that the intensity of the action is itself nourishing. In fasting from food, or drink, or habit-ual behaviors, you make room for what is truly important. Even though Lenten Sundays stand apart from the Lenten fast, you will notice traces of fasting in our liturgy. We fast from singing the Gloria and Alleluia, we fast from flowers bedecking the altar, and there may be a noticea-ble drop in the number of infant baptisms as parents elect to wait until Easter. This hints that fasting is a prelude to feasting, and the vigor of our Easter alleluias is rich fare after a long silence. LENTEN MESSAGE FROM POPE FRANCIS “If one member suffers, all suffer together” (1Cor 12:26)

T he Church. The love of God breaks through that fatal withdrawal into ourselves which is indiffer-

ence. The Church offers us this love of God by her teaching and especially by her witness. But we can only bear witness to what we ourselves have experi-enced. Christians are those who let God clothe them with good-ness and mercy, with Christ, so as to become, like Christ, serv-ants of God and others. This is clearly seen in the liturgy of Holy Thursday, with its rite of the washing of feet. Peter did not want Jesus to wash his feet, but he came to realize that Jesus does not wish to be just an example of how we should wash one another’s feet. Only those who have first allowed Jesus to wash their own feet can then

offer this service to others. Only they have “a part” with him (Jn 13:8) and thus can serve others. Lent is a favorable time for letting Christ serve us so that we in turn may become more like him. This happens whenever we hear the word of God and receive the sacraments, especially the Eucharist. There we be-come what we receive: the Body of Christ. In this body there is no room for the indifference which so often seems to possess our hearts. For whoever is of Christ, belongs to one body, and in him we cannot be indifferent to one another. “If one part suffers, all the parts suffer with it; if one part is honored, all the parts share its joy” (1 Cor 12:26). The Church is the communio sanctorum not only because of her saints, but also because she is a communion in ho-ly things: the love of God revealed to us in Christ and all his gifts. Among these gifts there is also the response of those who let themselves be touched by this love. In this communion of saints, in this sharing in holy things, no one possesses anything alone, but shares everything with others. And since we are unit-ed in God, we can do something for those who are far distant, those whom we could never reach on our own, because with them and for them, we ask God that all of us may be open to his plan of salvation. Excerpt from Message of His Holiness Pope Francis for Lent 2015.

CHILD ABDUCTION: TAKING ACTION

A recent study of the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children® revealed that 83% of

children who escaped their would-be abductors kicked, yelled, and pulled away to escape. Teach your child these and other abduction prevention skills, such as: Asking for permission before changing plans; asking for permission before ap-proaching or getting into vehicles with anyone; recog-nizing the tricks would-be abductors use, such as of-fering rides or asking for help; telling a trusted adult whenever anything or anyone makes them uncomfort-able. When it comes to keeping your child safe, YOU are your child’s best resource. The more you know about abduction prevention, the better protected your child will be. Use your knowledge to make con-versations about personal safety a regular part of your family’s routine. For more information, visit:

L a Iglesia.
