Cruz ViewsExpert Tips for Santa Cruz Entrepreneurs: a Q&A with Nada Miljkovic

A media content creator and digital story-teller, Nada Miljkovic is the founder and CEO of Artists On Art, a weekly radio interview show. She also teaches entrepreneurship at UCSC and the Stanford Interna-tional Institute, working with 12 year-old middle school students up to 50 year-old grad-uate students.

I chatted with Miljkovic to get her best tips for Santa Cruz entrepreneurs. Here are the highlights of our conversation.

Cat Johnson: You classify the entrepreneurs you work with into three different categories. Will you tell me more about that?Nada Miljkovic: First, there’s the traditional, in-novative entrepreneur—someone who looks at the world, sees problem, and sees an opportu-nity for a business product or service that could be a solution. They just want to start their own business—they don’t want to work for someone else.

Then there’s the social entrepreneur—someone who has a passion to help the world in some way. For example, they may want to help home-less people. I teach them to then collaborate with organizations that are helping the home-less to find a solution together.

The third is the creative entrepreneur—some-one who has a creative, internal desire to ex-press themselves, whether that’s through paint-ing, sculpture, music, whatever. I teach them to start with that authentic passion, then look out at the world and find the market for what they have to create.

What are some of the key points you teach to entrepreneurs?Collaborating with your customers or clients. My students all collaborate with their market. I teach from the lean startup, which is the busi-ness model canvas. With the canvas, we start with your value proposition and who your cus-tomers are. Until we have that locked down—until you have the value proposition your cus-

tomers are looking for—we don’t move forward. That’s the heart of a business.

The biggest mistake novice startups and people new to creating their own business make is that they think they have the answer. This is, hands-down, the biggest reason businesses fail. They think they have the answer and they didn’t do the market research.

Through the market research you get to the real problem your customers are having—you come upon a solution that indeed is the solution your customers want.

How do you recommend people do market research? The heart of my classes is teaching my students to collect qualitative data that they then analyze to create their business model canvas, which is the precursor to a business plan. You do this through in-person interviews with as many people as pos-sible in your market because any data set is better the bigger it is.

You ask open-ended questions because you could very easily lead your customers into answering questions the way you want them to, which can skew your data. You also need to find out how often they need your service. I have students go through a typical day of their customer archetype, from the moment they get up to the moment they go to sleep. The 12 year-olds are much better at this than the 50 year-olds.

Why is that? The grad students have been working on this—they are invested in their solution. Now I’m telling them that they need to collaborate, and talk to people. But, if they don’t do that, they open up their doors and nobody is there because people don’t want what they’re selling. We’re constantly saying, “Get out of the build-ing, go find your market, go find your custom-ers and talk to them.” I have to really push the grad students. The 12 year-olds are like, “Yeah, I’ll call Obama!”

Not everyone is comfortable putting themselves and their ideas out there for comment.Founders are not necessarily the ones who are the inventors. Founders love to talk to people, love to network and do all that. Some inventors need a partner who can do that.

One of the biggest surprises that almost every class has come upon is that people love to talk.

They love to talk about their interests, they love to talk about possible solutions—especially if it’s a pain. I tell them to ask for 15 minutes and they’ll get an hour or an hour and a half con-versation.

What other tips can you share for doing market interviews? The second to last question should be, “Is there anything else you can tell me that I haven’t asked?” The last question should be, “Who else do you think would like to talk with me about this?” That’s where you get the next person, and the next person. That way, business owners are not only talking to their potential customers, they’re also talking to people who are experts in their field.

What’s your best piece of advice to Santa Cruz entre-preneurs?Santa Cruz is a very small market. When I was thinking about starting my business, it was purely videography, and I met with someone through SCORE. I highly recommend SCORE and the Small Business Development Center (SBDC). I was partnered with a woman who had done videography. She immediately told me I was going to go over the hill and she was completely right.

Unless you have a niche market that you know you’ve got enough of a customer that will bring in the revenue stream you need, chances are you’re going to have to go over the hill. It’s hard, and people don’t want to hear it, but that’s the reality.

How do you recommend people use SCORE & the SBDC? When you need help with overall career growth, SCORE is for you. You’ve got somebody who’s an expert and is able to see the bigger picture. Use SCORE when you need a mentor or need to work on your overarching career path.

When you need to go down into the nitty gritty, the SBDC will take the business model canvas and give you the skills you’re lacking: Quick-books, regulations around hiring, insurance needs, etc. When you need to know the latest laws, you go to the SBDC. n
