he Feast of Corpus Christi is one of five occasions in the year during which a diocesan bishop is not to be away from his diocese except for a grave and urgent reason. By tradition, Catholics take part in a procession through the streets of a neighborhood near their parish following mass, and pray and sing. The Eucharist, known as the Blessed Sacrament, is placed in a monstrance and held aloft by a member of the clergy during the procession. Afterward, parishioners return to the church for benediction. On May 29 the Corpus Christi procession in Santa Fe included the six parishes of the city: The Cathedral Basilica of St Francis of Assisi, Cristo Rey, Our Lady of Guadalupe, St Anne, St John the Baptist, Sam Isidro-San Jose and Santa Maria de la Paz. Parishioners from each stood at the St. Francis altar with their banners and joined in the procession with the Archbishop around the city block of the Cathedral, escorted by the Santa Fe Police Department. Corpus Christi is the time when Catholics recognize the body of Christ in the Eucharist. Its celebration was suppressed in Protestant churches during the Reformation, and today most Protestant denominations do not recognize the feast. The Church of England abolished it in 1548 as the English Reformation progressed, but later reintroduced it. Catholics venerate the Blessed Host through benediction. We present faith in the body and blood of Christ to public on the feast of Corpus Christi every year at the Cathedral. The Santa Fe Fiesta Council, Caballeros de Vargas, La Cofradia de la Conquistadora and the Knights Of Columbus have a long history in presiding in this processional with the faithful of Santa Fe. Fr. JohnPaul Oluchi Afuecheta, 32, is from Obeagu Village in Nigeria. He has one sister and one brother. Fr. Afuecheta has always felt called to the priesthood. He started seminary studies at St. Dominic Savio seminary in 1996 and then went to St. John Bosco Seminary in 1999. From 2003 to 2005 he served various parishes seeking to be admitted into his diocese – but he was rejected! (There are so many vocations in that diocese they simply cannot take everyone!) Soon after he met the Pallottines, then, through the advice of his good friend Fr. Vitus Ezeiruaku, he applied to the Archdiocese of Santa Fe, where he got a very favorable response from Archbishop Emeritus Michael J. Sheehan. Fr. John Paul started studies at Holy Apostles Seminary in August of 2013. He has served as a deacon in various parishes, including Sacred Heart in Espanola and Holy Ghost in Albuquerque.

Fr. Ted Butler, 56, is the youngest of seven children, with three brothers and three sisters. Both of his parents have passed away. He was raised in Arch, NM, and on a farm in Portales. When Fr. Ted was 18, he got his GED and joined the Navy, serving in the Advanced Electronics Field as a Submarine Sonar Technician for six years. Later in returned to Portales and joined St. Helen Catholic Church, where he was baptized and confirmed a brand new Catholic. Fr. Ted started attending daily Mass and became more involved in this parish. When Fr. James McGowan came to St. Helen’s Church Fr. Ted discovered he had a strong interest in the priesthood. With the archbishop’s blessing, he studied at Holy Apostles Seminary. He has served in various parishes around the diocese including Annunciation Parish and San Miguel in Socorro.

Fr. Angelo Marquez, 25, comes from a very supportive family and has one sister. He was born in Gallup but moved to Las Vegas, NV, when he was 5. His family later moved to Rio Rancho, where he called the Church of the Incarnation his home parish and was part of Life Teen. While attending the University of New Mexico he started having thoughts of the priesthood. Fr. Angelo transferred to the Franciscan University of Steubenville in Ohio, where he received a bachelor’s degree in philosophy. Fr. Angelo has served in various parishes around the archdiocese including: Our Lady of Guadalupe in Taos and the Aquinas Newman Center at UNM.

Fr. Michael Niemczak, 25, was born in Alamosa, CO, to newly immigrated parents from Poland. He has two older brothers and one younger sister. He lived in New York and in Poland before finally moving to Rio Rancho. Fr. Michael comes from a very strong Catholic family and fell in love with the Mass. While in high school, he was very much involved in his parish of St. Thomas Aquinas. After graduating from Cibola High School, Michael went to the Josephinum to study philosophy and then to the Pontifical North American College in Rome to study theology. Fr. Michael has always felt called to the priesthood. He has served in various parishes around the archdiocese including the Aquinas Newman Center and St. John Vianney.

Happy Birthday, Brother Knights! at the Santa Fe Shelter

During Lent,

Knights are encouraged to share what their councils are doing in response to Pope Francis’ call to grow in faith by performing the corporal and spiritual works of mercy. With so many Knights of Columbus programs and initiatives being expressions of the works of mercy —including 40 Cans for Lent, Coats for Kids, and Food for Families— Knights should lead their parishes in Lenten observances during the Holy Year of Mercy.

Knights can start small, by simply hanging the printable Works of Mercy poster in their homes, council meeting spaces, and parishes, to be reminded daily to perform the works of mercy.

Post your pictures and stories to Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram with the hashtag #KnightsKnowMercy, and you might be featured on one of the Supreme Council’s official social media accounts!
