Senator Warren, speaking of the workof the national Republican convention, said:

"The platform adopted by the conven-

tion conveys to the people of my state, and of every western state and terri-

tory, the most hopeful tidings giventhem for many years. This is containedin the declaration that, 'in further pur-suance of the constant policy of theRepublican party to provide free homeson the public domain, we recommendadequate national legislation to reclaimthe arid lands of the United States, re-

serving con trul of the distribution ofwater for irrigation to the respectivestates and territories.'

NO IDLE PROMISES."The fact that the Republican party

puts no idle words in its platforms andredeems every promise it makes to thefullest degree is appreciated in thewest, and, with the positive declarationthat the party is committed to reclama-tion of the arid lands of the country, alldoubts that this will be done, and donespeedily, are removed.

A STRONG DECLARATION"Had I had such a declaration to back

me up at the close of the fifty-fift- h con-

gress, when I attempted to secure anappropriation for the building of stor-

age reservoirs in the west, successwould have been assured. With such adeclaration now, a plank in the plat-form of the Republican party, successis in sight, and I confidently believethat before the fifty-sixt- h congresscloses it will provide means for the In-

auguration of a system of reclamationof our arid lands which will do as muchfor the arid west as the adoption of thehomestead law did for the middle west
