OUR FIELD:What are some of the most important, relevant,

pressing challenges and dilemmas we are facing as a community of practice today?

Biggest Take-outs• “Don’t work alone! Also teaches the client about collaboration - working in

teams should be in our DNA”

• “Help ‘slow’ get some publicity again – be advocates for slow”

• “You should really have to force the client to understand what they need before you can be helpful”

• “Stay open to other philosophies and fields (we are working on the same issues) – we must not become a cult”

• Principle of reverse mentoring – Y Generation mentoring CEOs; specifically in the realm of technology.

• The importance of acknowledging excellence – something that is done well in the performance space but so seldom in organisations. Almost everyone feels undervalued, well-timed ‘applause’ will go a long way!

OUR WORLD:What does OD mean and provide currently to the

World both locally and globally?Biggest Take-outs

• Collaboration is not as easy as we often pretend

• Where to start? – Find the frustrated people; it’s not about trying to convince everyone to come to the table

• Don’t focus on what is desirable, but on what is possible – take an experimental approach, try multiple solutions

• In order to this kind of work, need to go beyond the idea of professionalism; be a part of the situation, not an expert. Approach with curiosity!

• “Ghost Roles” in organisations – marginalised roles in organisation – when ‘problematic’ person is removed from the group/team, yet the issue remains…

• Keep the language simple!

OUR IMPACT:How can we make a difference in our

organisations and in the World?Biggest Take-outs:

• South Africa – “A miracle and a mess”

• Witnessing without judgement the power of story, of being present and open to different worldviews and the profound nature of reconciliation

• We are no longer agents of change, we are now agents of connection, living in the age of innovation

• For teams – setup, follow through, refresh (often)

• Use team gatherings to determine nature and tone of operating rhythm (especially important for virtual teams)

• Transformation is a shift at the ‘level of being’

What did you learn from the way the conference was designed and hosted?

1. 400 attendees, 36 countries, 3 days –polished and professional execution (down to finest details)

2. Agenda and content from beyond the boundaries of what would be deemed traditional ‘OD’

3. Co-chairs (from ODN and IODA) with a shared vision for the conference – good combination of different organisations’personas

What did the experience and hosting mean to you personally as an OD practitioner?

1. The work we are doing and the challenges we are facing are not dissimilar from our colleagues across the globe

2. We have a very wide network of like-minded individuals, who care about us and want to connect!

3. Exposure to a global network, including some of the silverbacks of OD, invaluable experience

4. Feel truly privileged to have had this opportunity and look forward to collaborating with IODA for the 2017 conference in Cape Town
