The airport gets more and more crowded and is awaiting the opening of the new terminal, which will approximately double its capac-ity, sadly the building site has been stopped due to financial difficulties, so it looks like this will be available only in two years or so. In my opinion, Vienna airport is outdated and generally very unsightly (tasteless and very much patched together interiors). I think there is a gen-eral lack of seating here. Prices at bars and restaurants are outrageous. Considering this is their hub, the C lounge facilities offered by Aus-trian Airlines are unimpressive. The new CAT service (City Airport Train) to/from Vienna is a joke - it has roughly the same frequency and

A Century of Green Leaders

Today’s environmental leaders, such as Nobelists Wangari Maathai and Al Gore, stand on the shoulders of a long list of gi-ants. Across the years, scientists. explorers, head of state, activ-ists and others have made their case for how humans should manage their interactions with the natural world. A photo gallery explores some of the most influential members of this group.

TURNING POINT

You Can’t Take it with You

The turning point in my life came be-fore I was born. It was the day in 1912 when my Greek immigrant father came to America. He came as a teenager, without a penny or a word of English, and with only a third-grade education.

He took a job as a railroad dish-washer. He worked, ate and slept in a steaming caboose and saved eve-rything he made. With his savings he opened a restaurant, and kept it open 24 hours a day, seven days a week for 25 years in my hometown of Kearney, Neb. His hard work and thrift gave me extraordinary oppor-tunities. Had I been born in a dif-ferent country, at a different time, I would never have had the chances that gave me such good fortune.

I have lived the American Dream—I went to college, worked in the cor-porate world, served in government and became an investment bank-er. And that led to a second turning point, on June 21, 2007, at 9:30 a.m. That was the day the Blackstone Group—a private-equity, asset-man-agement and financial-advisory firm that I cofounded—went public. In an hour I became an instant billionaire.

What to do with so much money? I have much more than enough, and there seems little prospect that I can take it with me. So again I turn to my father’s example. When he had built a modest net worth, he gave generously to his old home in Greece and to the less fortunate in his beloved new home. Tears would come to his eyes when he sang “God Bless America.” He

Let me summarize three such challenges. First, as 78 mil-lion baby boomers reach re-tirement age, the costs of Social Security and Medicare will skyrocket, leaving us with unfunded promises of more than $44 trillion in today’s dol-lars—equal to about three times our entire gross do-mestic product. Income taxes would have to double to pay for it—an unthinkable burden.

I’m not sure if we re-member how to give up something for the long-term general good.

Second, our current-account deficits are unprecedented, fed by record trade deficits. Such dependence on for-eign capital is dangerous. America as a country, and Americans as a people, must be persuaded to save more.

Third, our health-care costs are metastasizing. We al-ready spend more than twice as much per capita as other developed nations, with no appreciable differences in health outcomes or longev-ity. These ballooning costs threaten the very competitive-ness of American industry.

These challenges all require

Blackstone’s Peterson made a mint, then chose to give it away to solve US economic challenges.

The “Greatest Genera-tion” that lived through the Depression of the 1930s and World War II confront-ed, overcame and paid for challenges more sobering than those we face today. We can do it again. I refuse to believe that we have be-come so selfish and self-absorbed that we don’t care about our children’s future and America’s leadership in the world.

How do we as a country, and Americans as a peo-ple, learn to save more and spend less? How do we educate the young about the crisis they will face if things aren’t changed, and then move them to do something about it? Or will it take a real and very costly crisis to force us into action?

We need to go where the young people are: new media, bloggers, You-Tube, Facebook, MyS-pace, MTV, and networks and Web sites that have not even been invented, and that is what my foun-dation will try to do. We will sponsor the produc-tion of films that educate people about the perils America faces (I have been impressed with what Al Gore accomplished with “An Inconvenient Truth”). We will have youth sum-mits to get young leaders engaged in the process. Maybe someone should develop an AAYP, an American Association of Young People, to counter-

If Wes Jackson, founder and president of the Land Institute in Salina, Kans., has one complaint, it’s what he calls “our deficit spending of the Earth’s ecological capital,” from oil and miner-als to water and trees. NEWSWEEK asked dozens of thinkers for their solutions, from 300mpg cars to us-ing enormous kites to help pull ships.

1. Zero waste:Recycling pa-per, plastic and aluminum is a start, but, oh, so 20th century.aEric Lombardi hates waste. “Landfills are like black holes, where resources go in and never come out,” says the execu-tive director of Eco-Cycle, a nonprofit re-cycler in Boulder, Colo. “As the world’s population explodes and its resource base shrinks, we can’t afford that.” In-stead, Lombardi wants manufactur-ers to make most or all of their prod-ucts fully recyclable, using materials

designed to be recaptured rather than ending up in junkyards. It’s not impos-sible, as companies like Shaw Carpets and office-furniture maker Steelcase are showing. Both make products with stringent C2C Certification, indicat-ing total recyclability—and 40 other other companies, tapping into the green building trend, are doing the same. “Waste is expensive and ineffi-cient,” says Lombardi. “It only appears cheap because the market doesn’t send bills to industry for groundwa-ter pollution and resource depletion.”

2. LED light bulbs: Never mind the cli-ché, they really might be a better idea.

Now that we’ve all dutifully stocked up on compact fluorescents, guess what? A new generation of even better bulbs may be on its way. LED bulbs burn just half the energy, last eight times long-er and contain no traces of mercury, as CFLs do. The best of the fledgling bulbs is the Pharox from Lemnis Light-ing. While LEDs have long been used for colored digital readouts and traffic signals, manufacturers have had trou-ble making white LED bulbs that are as strong as incandescents. Truthfully, the Pharox isn’t there yet. It produces only as much light as a standard 40-watt bulb, and it’s hugely expensive ($39.95 per bulb). On the other hand, it consumes a meager four watts, and a more pow-

The Natural No MoreThe greatest mystery in a mystifying campaign: what happened to Bill?

History may record primary day in Pennsyl-vania as the day Bill Clinton officially became the most tragic figure of the 2008 campaign. As voters headed to the polls to place anoth-er comeback in Hillary’s hands, her spouse was getting himself into trouble, yet again. When a reporter asked the former president to explain why he felt Barack Obama’s cam-paign had “played the race card” on him in South Carolina, Clinton was wrathfully indignant, denying he’d ever said such a thing. (Never mind the interview he’d given on a Philadelphia NPR station the day before saying ex-actly those words.) In an in-stant, the former president had proved himself not just out of step with the Inter-net and cable news cycles, but even ignorant to the re-alities of the radio age. By evening, the Clintons were in opposite narratives: Hillary was living yet an-other survivor’s tale, show-ing she could stay and fight. Her husband, however, was the same story he’s been for the whole campaign: off message, old news.

What has happened to Bill Clinton? For months, it’s been a great mystery in a mys-tifying campaign how the most gifted poli-tician of a generation could become an unceasing gaffe machine. Was it the Bub-ble—had a post-presidency spent with global do-gooders and fawning billionaires made Bubba lose his touch for the common man? Was it Freudian destiny, Hillary’s husband

Americans have never loved this side of Bill, but they’ve tolerated it when it came with a prom-ise of better things. Yes, a good portion of the country agreed that Bill was the victim of a vast, right-wing conspiracy in the ‘90s. Yet that wasn’t why Americans believed in him. They liked him because he fought that conspiracy and won, and in triumph had a smile on his face.

Winning this time, however, is Hillary’s job, which sometimes means whining is the only job left for her husband. It doesn’t matter that he may have good reasons to complain. His “fairy tale” description of Obama’s Iraq policy was not rac-

ist. The media are biased against him. The Obama campaign has,at times, played the race card with great effect. But no one will make those points for him. He has no allies in the lib-eral blogosphere where conspiracy theories about the mainstream media gain great traction. Nor does he seem to have many friends left in the black commu-nity. Rep. James Clyburn’s comment to The New York Times that Clinton had “in-censed” African-Americans caused a stir because of

the speaker (Clyburn had heretofore remained neutral in the Obama-Clinton fight), not be-cause of the point he was making. So Bill is left to point out his grievances himself. As a re-sult, he is forever playing Bartleby Bill, the man who cannot move beyond his own victimization, a doomed character in every American myth.

But Hillary can still set him free. After a high-mind-ed, dramatic start, the Democratic campaign has devolved into something vaguely sleazy, often dishonest and increasingly small bore. It is en-tering an arena, in other words, where The Natu-ral knows how to thrive. Hillary has long

Brownsville’s Bad LieThe fence is coming, and its causing Texas- size problems for the folks of one ity in particularFor five generations, the Benavidez family has lived on a seven-acre plot of serene farmland near the U.S.-Mexico border west of Brownsville, Texas. They’ve harvested cotton and squash and raised goats and pigs. They’ve helped sculpt the levee that snakes across the rear of the property. They’ve given birth there, married there and died there. Their connection to the land runs so deep that they can’t imagine parting with even a piece of it. So two weeks ago, when federal employees arrived asking to purchase a rectangular slice abutting the levee for $4,100 to make way for a border fence aimed at deterring illegal immigrants, they refused. “I don’t want to scare you,” Idalia Benavidez, 77, says one of the employees told her, “but whether you agree or not, the govern-ment’s going to make the fence.” If the Feds get their way, an 18-foot-high barrier will soon trav-erse the Benavidez property, cutting off their cows from a pasture south of the fence’s proposed path. “It’s going to be ugly,” says Benavidez. Worse still, she predicts, “it’s not going to work.”

The Philippines has long been regarded as an interesting sideshow in Southeast Asia. A former colony of Spain, then the United States, it seems to have more in common with Lat-in America than with its Asian neighbors. There are few exist-ing written records of its precolonial history and culture. It has no temples like Indonesia’s Borobodur or Cambodia’s Angkor Wat to indicate what civilizations existed on the 7,107 islands before their Western conquest. Artifacts on display at the Na-tional Museum and at the Central Bank Museum in Manila of-fer clues as to the islands’ original inhabitants, but the availa-ble scholarship leaves too many questions unanswered. More than a century after the Philippines became an independ-ent republic, the debate over the Filipino identity continues.

A new permanent exhibition at the privately owned Ayala Museum in the financial capital, Makati City, only heightens the mystery. “Gold of Ancestors” features 1,059 precious objects that are believed to date back as far as the 10th century. Most were acquired by a private col-lector, and have never been seen in public. Among the pieces on display are cutwork diadems, fu-nerary masks, ornaments and ritual containers. Their quality and scope suggest that ancient Filipinos had closer links to their Southeast Asian neighbors than is currently supposed. There is a gold vessel in the shape of a creature that is half-bird, half-woman: the “kimnari” of Hindu mythology. A plaque depicts a female figure in an elaborate headdress with a tree-of-life motif, her hands raised as if in worship. The centerpiece of the exhibition is an intricately crafted gold halter, weighing almost four kilograms, that is believed to be the Upavita, or Sacred Thread, of the sort worn by the elite Brahmin class in traditional Hindu society.

Hindu influences can be seen all over Southeast Asia, but the exhibit raises the burning question: who made these ob-jects? Were they created by the inhabitants of the islands now known as the Philippines, or were they brought in by foreign traders? “The answer is, ‘We don’t know’,” says Flo-rina H. Capistrano-Baker, curator in charge of the exhibition. “One of the reasons the collection is so important is that it provides a large body of works for comparative study with similar objects from Southeast Asia, such as those found in Oc-Eo in Vietnam and the Wonoboyo hoard in Indonesia. We assume that they are locally made until proven otherwise.”

Going For the Gold

Where have the objects been hid-ing all these years? They were collected by the family of the late National Artist and architect Le-andro Locsin, which for decades has funded archeological expedi-tions and research into the islands’ past. Reluctant to flaunt gold in a country where most of the popu-lation lives in poverty, the Locsins have been sitting on the collection for 25 years, waiting for the right conditions to publicly exhibit it. They finally got the chance when the Zobel de Ayala family inaugu-rated the new Ayala Museum in 2004, providing an appropriate fa-cility to house the collection. “This exhibition is not about present-day personalities and egos,” says a representative of the Locsin family. “It’s about our national patrimony and what it can tell us about who we are as Filipinos. The primary concern is its enlightened stew-ardship: ensuring that this knowl-edge develops in our people’s consciousness in a manner that is sustainable, secure and relatively free from possible manipulation.”

Scholars have long considered Fil-ipino culture marginal in compari-son with the better-known Funan, Angkor, Srivijaya and Madjapahit cultures of Southeast Asia. The “Gold of Ancestors” exhibit sug-gests that the islands may have played a larger role in regional affairs than previously thought. John Miksic of the National Uni-versity of Singapore, an authority on Southeast Asian prehistory, has said that this collection represents the single most valuable tangible heritage of the Philippines. It may shine a light on the continuing dis-cussion of Philippine cultural iden-tity. To paraphrase that famous fictitious archeologist Indiana

Just the Tree of UsDriven by public concern, all the candidates agree that action is needed to slow global warming. No matter who’s elected, America’s policy will be different a year from now.

At this vital juncture in the earth’s history, it’s clear that the American people are looking for a presi-dential candidate who will take climate change “very seriously.” One who favors “unbiased research” into the problem and promises to support regulations that are “based on science.” Someone, per-haps, like George W. Bush, who in 2000 managed (in those words) to convey just enough assur-ance of his good intentions to defuse global warming as a make-or-break issue in the campaign. After seven years of inaction on greenhouse-gas emissions, Bush can honestly claim that he hasn’t changed his position. “I take the issue seriously,” he told a news conference at the end of last year.

Even back then, of course, the leaders of environmental groups understood that their inter-ests aligned more closely with Al Gore, who would go on to win the Nobel Peace Prize for his campaign against global warming. This year, though, those leaders want to make sure there’s no confusion on the part of the voting public. The environment, which typically ranks some-where around “regulatory reform” among voters’ concerns, has emerged as a leading issue in this election cycle; last year more than three voters in 10 said they would take a candidate’s green credentials into account, according to pollster John Zogby, up from just 11 percent in 2005. “It was clear starting all the way back in Iowa and New Hampshire that this campaign would be much more about the environment,” says Dave Willett, a spokesman for the Sier-ra Club. “The questions weren’t ‘Do you think global warming is happening?’ but ‘How are you going to deal with it, what’s your approach?’ “ Willett presumably means questions from citizens. Climate-change skeptics and deniers sometimes charge that the threat of global warming is a conspiracy kept alive by the media, but the reality seems rather different. The League of Conservation Voters tracks how often candidates are asked about environmental is-sues in televised debates and interviews, and the current tally shows that of 3,231 questions by the leading political reporters from five networks, exactly eight concerned global warming.

The league, which generally calls the tune for most mainstream environmental groups when it comes to national politics, hasn’t chosen a candidate for 2008. Officially, it is keeping an open mind, while waiting for John McCain to elaborate on his global-warming plan. But it would consti-tute a major political upheaval if the league, for the first time since it began making presidential endorsements in 1980, chose the Republican. In its ranking of senators based on their positions on 15 votes in 2007 (including farm subsidies, gas mileage and biofuel standards), the Demo-crats are almost all clustered in the top half of the standings, while the Republicans, with a couple of exceptions (essentially, Susan Collins and Olympia Snowe, both of Maine), bring up the rear. Specifically, Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton are considered strong environmental candidates. In addition to the annual rankings, the league maintains lifetime standings, which may be more significant than those based on a single year’s votes. The Illinois senator has a 96 percent lifetime voting record; Clinton has a 90 percent lifetime rating and was endorsed by the league as an “envi-ronmental champion” in her 2006 re-election campaign. “It’s clear from both of their voting records in the Senate that they’re committed to supporting energy efficiency and slowing global warming,” says league spokesman Jay Natoli. “In fact, they’re too similar to say at this point that one is better than the other. [As for] McCain, his plan isn’t as strong, but he has sponsored and supported leg-

A Most Casual Addiction

Ask patricia obrian 36 about her college years and she readily admits to having had an addiction.

For molecules of a liquid to evaporate, they must be located near the surface, be moving in the proper di-rection, and have sufficient kinetic energy to over-come liquid-phase intermolecular forces.[1] When only a small proportion of the molecules meet these criteria, the rate of evaporation is low. Since the ki-netic energy of a molecule is proportional to its temperature, evaporation proceeds more quickly at higher temperatures. As the faster-moving molecules escape, the remaining molecules have lower aver-age kinetic energy, and the temperature of the liquid decreases. This phenomenon is also called evapo-rative cooling. This is why evaporating sweat cools the human body. Evaporation also tends to proceed more quickly with higher flow rates between the gas-eous and liquid phase and in liquids with higher va-por pressure. For example, laundry on a clothes line will dry (by evaporation) more rapidly on a windy day than on a still day. Three key parts to evaporation are heat, atmospheric pressure (determines the percent humidity) and air movement. On a molecular level, there is no strict boundary be-tween the liquid state and the vapor state. Instead, there is a Knudsen layer, where the phase is unde-termined. Because this layer is only a few molecules thick, at a macroscopic scale a clear phase transition interface can be seen.Liquids that do not evaporate visibly at a given tem-perature in a given gas (e.g., cooking oil at room tem-perature) have molecules that do not tend to transfer energy to each other in a pattern. An Operatic Debut for Robot Divas

Scientists at MIT are about to pro-duce the world’s first robotic opera. “Death and the Powers,” now in re-hearsal at the school’s media lab, is a story about an inventor who wants to live forever and decides to down-load himself into his household be-longings. The opera features an animatronic set, robotic performers and live musicians using “hyperin-struments”—traditional instruments embedded with chips that interpret and enhance a performer’s emo-tional emphasis. Singers may even use swallowable microchips that will change the way they sound.

Created by Tod Machover, an MIT-based composer who grew up with an engineer father and a pianist mother, the show boasts big-name talent. The librettist is former U.S. poet laureate Robert Pinsky, and the lead will be sung by James Maddalena, who sang the part of Nixon in the celebrated opera “Nix-on in China.” The show is funded by Prince Albert II of Monaco, and will open in Monaco next year before a U.S. tour. Machover says his aim is to use futuristic technology to make music more accessible. But he also wants an opera that’s about family, mortality and the meaning of life. By the ending, there may not be a dry monitor in the house.

Winning over the Values Voters

The first summit was held in 2006. Among the key issues for values voters defined by the organizers are opposition to abortion and to same-sex marriage, and a strong na-tional defense.[2][3] The Los Angeles Times describes the conference as combination rally, revival meeting, political convention and bazaar.”[4] The conference typically includes appearances from Republican potential presidential candidates vying for the support of the crucial social conservative base of the party.[5][6][7]

Featured guests at the summit have included commentators Sean Hannity, Bill O’Reilly, Ann Coulter, in ad-dition to numerous elected officials and other conservative figures. Co-sponsors of the event included other Christian political action groups, such as AFA Action (part of the American Family Association), the Herit-age Foundation, Liberty University, Liberty Counsel and Gary Bauer’s organization American Values.[8]

After a “civil war” over the inclusion of the gay Republican group GOProud led many conservative or-ganizations and activists to boycott the 2011 Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC), Politico reported that a group of conservative figures were beginning to organize to turn the Values Voter Summit into “a full-fledged rival to CPAC” by expanding its focus to include economic and national security is-sues.[9] Several of the boycotting organizations are already sponsors or participants in the Values Voter Summit.[9]

The Price of Friendship

I flicked Drew a sheepish glance as I pulled the key out of the door. “Sorry, I still haven’t worked out which key is which.”Drew laughed. “That’s okay, mate. Didn’t you say you only moved in yesterday?”I was happy when the next key worked. “That’s right. My parents told me I had to start school straight away.”“That sucks, big time.” Drew grinned. “At least you only have two days of school this week.” He paused and gave me a strange look. “Or did they make you go to school right up until you moved?”It was my turn to laugh as I pushed open the door. “No. I had Monday and Tuesday off to help pack, and yesterday was the move. You’re right, though. It could’ve been worse.”Before he could ask anoth-er question, I yelled out, “I’M HOME!”As I expected, my mum called back, “AND I’M NOT DEAF!”I’d have been wor-ried if she hadn’t done that. I grinned at Drew. “Come on, I’ll introduce you and then we can head up to my room.”I led Drew past the boxes in the hallway and down to the liv-ing room. Mum was standing in the middle of the room, staring first at the mantelpiece and then at the figurine in her hand. “Do you think this would look good up there, Rick?”“How should I know?” I looked at Drew and rolled my eyes. He grinned back.“You can still give me your opinion. Your father fled to the garage on the flimsy excuse that he needed to unpack his tools, so you’ve got the job of helping me out.” She put the small angel up and stepped back. She turned towards me and started to say something but stopped when she saw Drew.“I’m so sorry. I didn’t know there was anyone else here.” She wiped her hands on her apron and stepped forward. “Hi, I’m Jessica, Rick’s mum.”Drew took the proffered hand. “Hel-lo, Mrs. Wakeland. I’m Drew Canter.

Sense and SensibilityClothes that are stylish and sustainable are hitting the fashion shows. Will they get to your Jane Austen wrote the first draft of the novel in the form of a novel-in-letters (epistolary form) sometime around 1795 when she was about 19 years old, and gave it the title, Elinor and Marianne. She later changed the form to a nar-rative and the title to Sense and Sensibility.[3] By changing the title, Austen added “philosophical depth” to what began as a sketch of two characters.[4] The title of the book, and that of her next published novel, Pride and Prejudice (1813), may be suggestive of political conflicts of the 1790s.[5]

When Mr. Dashwood dies, his estate, Norland Park, passes directly to his only son John, the child of his first wife. His second wife, Mrs. Dashwood, and their daughters, Elinor, Mari-anne and Margaret, are left only a small income. On his deathbed, Mr. Dashwood extracts a promise from his son, that he will take care of his half-sisters; however, John’s selfish and greedy wife, Fanny, soon persuades him to renege. John and Fanny immediately take up their place as the new owners of Norland, while the Dashwood women are reduced to the position of unwelcome guests. Mrs. Dashwood begins looking for somewhere else to live.In the meantime, Fanny’s brother, Edward Ferrars, a pleasant, unassuming, intelligent but reserved young man, visits Norland and soon forms an attachment with Elinor. Fanny disap-proves the match and offends Mrs. Dashwood with the implication that Elinor is motivated by money rather than love. Mrs. Dashwood indignantly speeds her search for a new home.Mrs. Dashwood moves her family to Barton Cottage in Devonshire, near the home of her cousin, Sir John Middleton. Their new home lacks many of the conveniences that they have been used to,

In the beginning of the 20th century, a male Bengal tiger was shot in central India with a head and body length of 221 cm (87 in) between pegs, a chest girth of 150 cm (59 in), a shoulder height of 109 cm (43 in) and a tail length of 81 cm (32 in), which was perhaps bitten off by a rival male. In 1982, a sub-fossil right middle phalanx was found in a prehistoric midden near Kuruwita in Sri Lanka, which is dated to about 16,500 ybp and tentatively considered to be of a tiger. Tigers ap-pear to have arrived in Sri Lanka during a pluvial period during which sea levels were depressed, evidently prior to the last glacial maximum about 20,000 years ago.[20] In 1929, the British tax-onomist Pocock assumed that tigers arrived in southern India too late to colonize Sri Lanka, which earlier had been connected to India by a land bridge.[6]

In the Indian subcontinent, tigers inhabit tropical moist evergreen forests, tropical dry forests, tropical and subtropical moist deciduous forests, mangroves, subtropical and temperate upland forests, and alluvial grasslands. Latter tiger habitat once covered a huge swath of grassland and riverine and moist semi-deciduous forests along the major river system of the Gangetic and Brah-

The Sundarbans tiger project is a Bangladesh Forest Department initiative that started its field activi-ties in February 2005. The idea for creating such a project was first developed during a field survey in 2001, conducted by Md. Osman Gani, Ishtiaq U. Ahmad, James L. D. Smith and K. Ullas Karanth. They realized that the Sundarbans mangrove forest at the mouth of the Ganges River contained prob-ably one of the largest populations of wild tigers left in the world. As such, there was an urgent need to start measures that would en-sure the protection of this pre-cious area. The Save the Tiger Fund and the United States Fish and Wildlife Service generously donated funds to support the ini-tial phase of research that aimed to collect data on tiger ecology using telemetry, and study the ti-ger’s environment by assessing its habitat and prey. But manage-ment of a wilderness area needs more than just information on the species to be protected. Personnel with skills and resources to imple-ment conservation strategies, and the general support of the country are also required. So from the re-search base, the project is evolv-ing rapidly to also encompass ca-pacity building and conservation awareness activities. It has been able to do so through the forward thinking approach to management taken by the Forest Department, and the incredible support of the Bangladeshi people. The project is administered by the Forest Depart-ment. At the field level, there is a team of 8 persons, made up of For-est Department personnel and one wildlife consultant from the Univer-sity of Minnesota who advises on research strategies and trains staff

In the late 1990s, microsatellite anal-ysis was used to identify hybrids of Indian and Siberian tigers through polymerase chain reaction ampli-fication of hair samples. The study revealed that two tigers of the wild population of Dudhwa National Park had alleles contributed by both sub-species.[79] Both tigers had an In-dian tiger mitochondrial haplotype indicating that these animals had an Indian tiger mother.[80]

rian–Bengal tigers, which should neither be used for breeding nor being released into the Karoo, which for them is unsuit-able habitat.[89] Tigers that are not genetically pure will not be able to participate in the tiger Species Survival Plan, as they are not used for breeding, and are not al-lowed to be released into the wild.[90 The project has received controversy after accusations by their investors and conserva-tionists of manipulating the behavior of the tigers for the purpose of a film production, Living with Tigers, with the tigers

Both the warp frame-work and widgetkit lite are now responsive, so you should also notice the widgets scaling up and down as well. Pretty cool huh? The four tigers involved in this project have been confirmed to be crossbred Siberian–Bengal tigers, which should neither be used for breeding nor being released into the Karoo, which for them is unsuitable habitat.[89] Tigers that are not genetically pure will not be able to participate in the tiger Species Survival Plan, as they are not used for breeding, and are not allowed to be released into the wild.[90 The project has received controversy after accusations by their inves-tors and conservationists of manipulating the behavior of the tigers for the purpose of a film pro-duction, Living with Tigers, with the tigers believed to be unable to hunt.[87][88] Stuart Bray, who had originally invested a large sum of money in the project, claimed that he and his wife, Li Quan, watched the film crew “[chase] the prey up against the fence and into the path of the tigers just

As Manny Pacquiao slowly descended face first to the canvas Saturday night, something became clear even before he landed in such frightening fashion. It was over. It was over the same way it was over for Alexis Arguello after a 23-punch barrage from the hands of Aaron Pryor in 1982. In regards to the Pryor onslaught, late trainer Emanuel Steward said it best: “It will always be in the back of his mind.” Like Arguello, Pacquiao was eventu-ally revived physically, but the wounds from this fight won’t heal—ever.

Great fighters get knocked out toward the end of their careers. Some of them return; others try to move on. However, there is a huge difference between being knocked out and hurt. That being said, Pacquiao was hurt. Hurt in the sense that people feared for his safety. The hurt was magni-fied as those close to him clamored to be by his side. It is easy to blame the loss on carelessness and claim that Pacquiao was winning the fight, realistic to admit his skills have deteriorated and he will never be the same fighter again.

Whether he admits it or not, Pacquiao knows the consequences of walking into such a monumen-tal punch. All fighters innately know their capabilities and limitations, yet few are willing to admit them. He will never attack an opponent with such ferocity, never corner a man and refuse to let him escape, never land those devastating combinations in the same fashion, but, most impor-tantly, he will never arouse those legions of fans who have followed him religiously for so many years. Looking at his body of work, Pacquiao has given himself entirely to a sport, to his people. No knockout or loss can take that away.

For periods during the bout, Pacquiao showed glimpses of his old self. In fact, in the second and fifth rounds, Pacquiao landed that beautiful straight left hand with the same vigor as he had five or six years ago. By knocking Marquez down in the fifth, Pacquiao began to change the tenor of the fight. In the same round, the old fire returned as Pacquiao trapped Marquez against the ropes and landed hooks to the body and head.

Thus, if there was any question as to how Pacquiao would cope with the classic counterpunching of Marquez, he answered it early on through his movement and how he effectively used angles. Pacquiao adapted by no longer walking directly into Marquez’s comfort zone, so the straight right did not have the same derisive effect as it had in the past. With the exception of the third-round knockdown punch, Pacquiao had frustrated Marquez as if to confirm, “This time I will be better than you.” For a couple rounds, he was.

Then came the punch.
