Welcome to ALF 2018! We are delighted to present to you the details of this year’s Abbots Langley Festival; we think you’ll agree that the programme is diverse, interesting and fun, and there’s lots for everyone to enjoy.Congratulations to Daniel Garrod, who designed our eye catching logo in our competition for children last summer! We’d like to thank a number of people for making the festival happen this year, in particular the participating groups and individuals who are giving time and effort to bring you more than 30 different events this year in 13 venues. We are indebted to Three Rivers District Council for their support, and to our other sponsors and advertisers. Abbots Langley Parish Council has provided practical advice and support too, which also is much appreciated. It’s now time to enjoy 6 weeks of great local activities and entertainment. We hope you have a great summer!Festival Coordinator, Henderson HUB

Every effort has been made to ensure the accuracy of the information contained within this guide but it is subject to alteration without notice.

A brief history of the Abbots Langley FestivalThe first festival was conceived in 1991, organised by a small committee comprising Philip Joslin, Alan Johnson, Claire Stevenson and John Sutton. The committee had recognised the wealth of local talent in the village, and the first festival was a great success. The Association of Abbots Langley Performing Arts Societies was formalised, and the unbroken pattern of biennial ‘festivals of the arts’ became established. The first festivals were fairly modest in scope but always included performances by the Abbots Langley Players and Abbots Langley Gilbert & Sullivan Society in the Henderson Hall, and other regular favourites. After the 13th festival in 2016 ALPA, the organising committee decided to stand down after 25 years of dedicated work, and the Henderson HUB was asked to take on the organisation of future festivals. We are delighted to do so and thank Paul Goggins, John Sutton and all the other members of ALPA for all that they have done to organise the festival over so many years.

Giles Abbott is one of the UK’s leading storytellers, beguiling audiences of adults in the UK and internationally with storytelling for grown-ups who love the wonder in a good story. In this cycle of tales, one of the oldest in the Arabian Nights, a fisherman and a genie trade tales as each tries to outwit the other. Tales are funny, ghastly, cruel, devious and sometimes bizarre. You will thrill at the twists and go home feeling like you’ve been on a wonderful journey.

Kan Beng (one voice in Mandinka) is a band whose music blends traditional melodies and rhythms from various cultures with Western styles of music to create a unique and intoxicating concoction of traditional Mandinka folk, Berber folk, Jewish folk, funk, drum, & bass and rock. Their influences are eclectic and far-reaching, making for exciting, unpredictable music that mirrors the harmonious message at the band’s core: that music is a universal language that can unite all cultures. One voice born from many.

An opportunity to find out how to take cuttings of your garden plants – drop by to learn from keen members of the Gardening Society. All materials provided, but bring a piece of your favourite plant if you wish.

International landscape designer, Tom Stuart-Smith from Bedmond, will talk about making ephemeral gardens at flower shows, and how this relates to his work making gardens that last a bit longer. He’ll also talk about his work at the 2018 Chelsea Flower Show, as shown on TV. Tom has an international reputation for creating gardens that combine naturalism and modernity. Eight of these have been awarded gold medals, and three have won ‘Best in Show’ at Chelsea.

venueno.1Three middle-aged couples are trapped in the suburban way of life bored with themselves, their spouses and their daily routine of job or family or household chores. They are six very ordinary people, but they are portrayed with sensitivity and sympathy. There’s excitement and revelations, yet in the end they must return to their routine. Middle-Age Spread was produced in London’s West End to great acclaim, winning the 1979 Laurence Olivier award for Best New Comedy.

And finally…Our thanks to all the organisations, groups and people who have come together to produce the 2018 Festival. It’s been a pleasure to pull together such a wide range of events with something to suit all tastes and age groups, and we do hope that you’ve found things that appeal to you and your family.

Looking ahead…We sincerely hope the 2020 Festival will build on what we’ve achieved this year and on the foundations of previous festivals. If you have some ideas about an event that you, or your group, could add to the next festival, please let us know!

Finally, the task of coordinating the festival does take time and effort and will start in the autumn of 2019. We will need volunteers to help take on this role. If you could help us, please contact us at [email protected]
