AS MORE Singaporeans competeto get into America’s most prestig-ious universities, an increasingnumber are turning to tuition tohelp them ace the SAT.
Catering to the trend, a groupof young Singaporeans – four ofwhom graduated recently fromIvy League universities – have setup a SAT centre called Ivyprep.
While the concept of SAT tui-tion is not new, Ivyprep brands it-self as one that serves Singapore-ans as it is run solely by Singapore-ans who are well versed in both lo-cal and US education systems.
The four Ivy League graduatesare part of a five-per-s o n g r o u p t h a tlaunched Ivyprep lastM a r c h w i t h j u s t$5,000 in start-upcapital, breaking eveni n a r o u n d t w omonths.
The SAT, formerlyknown as the Scholas-tic Assessment Test,is an entry test for UScolleges.
The five Singapore-ans saw the businessopportunity as achance to make use oftheir own undergradu-ate experiences in theUnited States.
It started with MrSim Ping Khuan, 27, a DartmouthCollege graduate, who spentabout three years helping stu-dents prepare for the SAT duringhis undergraduate years.
At the end of 2011, he felt hecould not “handle the overwhelm-ing demand”. This, in turn, spurred him to launch the busi-ness with his friends.
The other co-founders are MrAlvin Foo, 28, a Yale graduate; MsJoanne Teh, 28, (Harvard); MsGlenda Tan, 26, (Brown Universi-ty); and another individual whoasked not to be named due to com-pany policy. All five hold jobs in
banks and the civil service. While competitors like Study-
works, Testtakers and Prep Zonecater primarily to internationalstudents, Ivyprep plans to stick toSingaporeans. “Being on the sametrack as our students helps usteach them better,” said Mr Foo.
Ivyprep has more than 50 stu-dents. Most are locals; the othersinclude Americans, Britons and In-dians. Classes are held at a rentedroom at Suntec City Mall, andeach student pays $1,400 foreight four-hour sessions.
The tutors designed a syllabusmodelled on their SAT experienc-es, with methods they say willhelp Singaporeans better.
For instance, theyhelp students changetheir writing styles tosuit the preferencesof US graders bypointing out stylisticdifferences betweenAmerican and Singa-porean writing.
Examples includewhere to place thesisstatements and usingshorter or longer sen-tences with clauses.
Last year, morethan 4,500 Singapore-ans were enrolled inAmerican institu-tions, the highest fig-ure in 11 years.
The SAT is offeredsix times a year here. It consistsof a reasoning test and subjecttests. A perfect score is 2,400.
Mr Reuben Ramen, 23, whohopes to enrol in New York Uni-versity this September, said hefelt at ease with Ivyprep’s tutors.“They knew how Singaporean stu-dents work.”
But some, like former RafflesInstitution student Jasmine Liu,19, feel that prep classes are not amust. She said: “It is possible tostudy for the SAT on your own, us-ing library books. I did that andscored 2,300.”
[email protected] co-founders (from left) Alvin Foo, Sim Ping Khuan, Glenda Tan and Joanne Teh graduated from top US colleges. They designed a syllabus modelled on theirexperiences of taking the SAT which they say will help Singapore students better prepare for the test. ST PHOTO: NURIA LING
