BAFFERT GOES INSIDE, OUTSIDE IN STARLETBy Lenny Shulman
Trainer Bob Baffert has his foes surrounded in Los
Alamitos' $300,000 Starlet Stakes (gr. I). Baffert,
who has three victories in the race formerly known
as the Hollywood Starlet, starts Treasuring from the
rail and Pretty N Cool from the outside post in the 1
1/16-mile event for 2-year-old fillies.
With champion-to-be Songbird sitting out, the
race is highly competitive. Pretty N Cool took the
Sorrento (gr. II) in August and shipped to New York to
annex the Matron (gr. II) before stopping late in the
Desi Arnaz. She tries two turns for the first time.
Treasuring, from a strong female family, has the
speed to gain the lead from the inside, and showed a
strong late kick when second in the Arnaz.
Trainer Jerry Hollendorfer also has a formidable
pair: multiple stakes winner Stays in Vegas, who
switches back to the main track after two turf scores,
and Anoakia Stakes winner Surfside Tiara. Pacific
Heat and Mama's Sugar, who have been brilliant in
their young careers, adds more spice to the field. BH

MOBILE BAY A GIANT IN LA CHAMPIONSBy Ron Mitchell
Irwin Olian's Tigertail Ranch's grade II winner
Mobile Bay is a running machine, having won or
placed in 11 of his 12 starts, including four stakes.
As the 9-5 morning-line favorite, the son of Lone
Star Day takes on older horses for the first time
in the $150,000 Louisiana Champions Day Classic
Dec. 12 at Fair Grounds Race Course & Slots.
Trainer Victor Arceneaux said the Louisiana-bred
colt is actually a gentle giant who turns on the com-
petitive juices when he goes to the gate.
"It's unbelievable how laid back he is," Arcene-
aux said. At 17 hands, Mobile Bay is not only one
of the best horses he's trained but also one of the
biggest. "This horse eats up all his feed and then
just literally lays down and sleeps. A lot of time we
think there might be something wrong with him."
Once on the track the homebred is all business.
"He doesn't waste any energy in the stall and I
think that is a big part of his success," Arceneaux
said. "He's amazing." BH

FOUR-WAY BATTLE FOR JAPAN'S FRESHMAN SIREBy Naohiro Goda
The race to be Japan's 2015 leading freshman sire
seems to be a four-way blanket finish.
As of Dec. 6 Japanese-bred Victoire Pisa, winner
of 2011 Dubai World Cup (UAE-I), led the list with 12
winners and earnings of ¥134,398,000 ($1,109,663).
Next in line is U.S.-bred Casino Drive, winner of
the 2008 Peter Pan Stakes (gr. II), at ¥123,560,000
($1,020,179). He has eight winners including Konei
Temma, who was second in the grade II Hyogo Junior
Grand Prix.
British-bred Workforce, winner of the Epsom Der-
by (Eng-I) and Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe (Fr-I), is third.
His juveniles have earned ¥120,550,000 ($996,281).
The top four are rounded out by Japanese-bred
Danon Chantilly, winner of the 2010 NHK Mile (Jpn-I),
with earnings of ¥113,873,000 ($941,099).
The final Japan Racing Association racing pro-
grams for 2015 are scheduled for Dec. 27 at Nakay-
ama Racecourse and Hanshin Racecourse. BH
FIRST-CROP BC WINNER AS SUCCESS INDICATORBy Madison Scott
Uncle Mo's siring 2015 Breeders' Cup Juvenile
(gr. I) winner Nyquist in his first crop is a notable
accomplishment, especially from a historical perspec-
tive. After 32 editions of the Breeders' Cup Juvenile
and Juvenile Fillies (gr. I), 10 stallions have sired
winners from their first crops. This achievement has
been a useful indicator of future success.
Danzig, Fappiano, Unbridled, Street Cry, and Uncle
Mo all sired Juvenile winners in their initial crop.
Chief's Crown (1984) took the inaugural running for
Danzig, followed by Fappiano's Tasso (1985). Unbri-
dled sired Unbridled's Song (1995), and Street Cry
sired Street Sense (2006) from his initial runners.
The Juvenile Fillies has been an inconsistent pre-
dictor of sire success. Meadowlake sired Meadow
Star (1990), and a decade later Honour and Glory's
Caressing (2000) won. Folklore (2005) won for Tiznow,
and Tapit sired champion Stardom Bound (2008)
from his first crop. She Be Wild (2009) took the Juve-
nile Fillies for Offlee Wild. BH

MEXICAN TRIPLE CROWN WINNER STEPS OUTBy Claire Novak
American Pharoah may be retired, but another
Triple Crown winner chases history Dec. 13 in
the Clásico del Caribe at Panama City's Hipódromo
Presidente Remón.
Mexican Triple Crown winner Huitlacoche
targets the 1 1/8-mile race for 3-year-olds bred in
five Central American countries. He won nine of
13 starts, including seven in a row before finishing
second by a neck last time out Nov. 6.
Bred by Germán Larrea's Rancho San Jorge,
Huitlacoche descends from familiar North Ameri-
can bloodlines—his dam is the Tabasco Cat mare
Sonora Cat and his sire is multiple graded stakes-
placed Free Thinking, an Unbridled half brother to
five-time graded winner Bedanken. Free Thinking
placed in the 2006 Firecracker (gr. IIT) and
Kelso (gr. IIT) handicaps.
Luis Contreras will ride Huitlacoche in the Clási-
co for trainer Fausto Gutierrez, who won the 2013
edition with Diamante Negro. One of about 140
horses Gutierrez trains for San Jorge, Huitlacoche
could be Florida-bound if he runs well Sunday.

PREVIEWwith Frank Angst
BETTING TREASURING'S SECOND TWO-TURN TRY
Bettors thought they had it all figured out when
Treasuring stretched out to two turns for the
first time in a maiden race Aug. 27 at Del Mar.
After finishing third in her six-furlong debut
July 26 at Del Mar, the well-bred Smart Strike
filly trained by Bob Baffert figured to thrive at a
mile in her second race.
Bettors sent her off
at 3-5, but Treasuring
faded to third after
leading for a half-
mile.
Treasuring's
second two-turn
attempt is scheduled
for today when she
jumps up in class
for the 1 1/16-mile
Starlet Stakes (gr. I)
at Los Alamitos Race
Course. That class
jump has four horses listed with lower morn-
ing-line odds than the 6-1 for Treasuring.
But those bettors disappointed by Treas-
uring's one-mile August race might be wise to
give her another chance. They did have the
right idea as her two-time leading sire has sired
classic winners Curlin and Lookin At Lucky.
Also, Treasuring is out of the winning Storm
Cat mare Teeming, a half sister to Belmont
Stakes (gr. I) winners Rags to Riches and Jazil.
Treasuring's full sister, Streaming, won
the 2013 Starlet at Betfair Hollywood Park.
She also has a stakes-winning half sister, and
two stakes-placed half sisters.
What leads me to believe that breeding
will come together today? Treasuring ap-
pears better prepared for this race and has
a win over the track for good measure—she
rolled to a 7 1/4-length score Sept. 19 going
5 1/2 furlongs. She received nearly two months
off before coming back with a runner-up finish
in the seven-furlong Desi Arnaz Stakes Nov. 15
at Del Mar.
That was a pretty nice effort off the layoff and
Treasuring has added to that score with a nice
work pattern at Santa Anita Park. Nine days after
the race she handily completed four furlongs in
:47 2/5 (4/38 at distance that day); six days later
she went five furlongs in
:59 2/5. (4/61) and she
added what appears to
be a long maintenance
work—going six furlongs
in 1:14 1/5—Dec. 6.
The play: $25 to win
on Treasuring. Value
seems to be in the win
bet here—at least for
me—as I struggled to
find much difference in
the other horses in this
field and would have to
play many of them in the
exactas. I'll stick with the win pool, where I'm most
confident the value resides.
Last week: The two turf sprints came off
the turf, forcing a no-bet. For the year, $477.50
wagered, $1,826.20 paid. BH
