MEDINA SPIRIT RUNS AWAY WITH AWESOME AGAINBy Bob Ehaltt @BobEhalt

Say what you want about Medina Spirit and trainer Bob Baffert—

they surely know how to create headlines.

About five months after the son of Protonico won the Kentucky Derby Presented by Woodford Reserve (G1), and about four months and three weeks since news broke that a banned race-day substance was found in Medina Spirit's system following the Run for the Roses, Medina Spirit and Baffert posted another newsworthy grade 1 win.

After sprinting to the lead shortly after the start, Medina Spirit stayed on top the rest of the way and pulled away in the stretch to capture the $301,500 Awesome Again Stakes (G1) by five widening and convincing lengths Oct. 2 at Santa Anita Park.

"It's just a very emotional win for me," Baffert said as his voice cracked. "He's a great horse and he showed it today."

For Baffert, who was flanked by his sons after the race, the emotion of the moment was obvious. Though the Kentucky Horse Racing Commission is awaiting a third and final test result before deciding whether or not to disqualify Medina Spirit in the Run for the Roses, the Awesome Again provided indisputable evidence that the 3-year-old ranks among the top horses in training.

"They don't give him much credit," winning rider John

Velazquez said. "The way he won today was impressive. So maybe they'll give him the credit he deserves. I keep saying and I probably sound like a broken record, but this guy, he has a ton of heart."

As for what's next, Zedan Racing Stables' Medina Spirit figures to take advantage of the free spot he secured for the Nov. 6 Longines Breeders' Cup Classic (G1) through Saturday's victory in the Awesome Again, a Breeders' Cup Challenge event. There at Del Mar, he could face his toughest race yet against a field likely to include fellow speedsters such as Knicks Go, Hot Rod Charlie, and Art Collector, along with several grade 1-winning closers in the field for the 1 1/4-mile Classic.

"He's going to be really, really tough," Velazquez said about the Classic. "He's a fighter. I love him. Right now, let's go."

The Breeders' Cup board commenced a review process as to whether Baffert will be permitted to participate in this year's Breeders' Cup World Championships, the organization announced Sept. 18. An update has not been issued since their initial announcement.

The win was the fifth in nine starts for Medina Spirit, who was third in the Preakness Stakes (G1) and then returned from a 3 1/2-month break to take the Aug. 29 Shared Belief Stakes at Del Mar in his prep for Saturday's debut against older horses.

Bred in Florida by Gail Rice and bought for just $35,000 from the Whitman Sales consignment at the 2020 Ocala Breeders' Sales July Sale of 2-Year-Olds and Horses of Racing Age, he has earned $2,525,200 and is the lone foal from the Brilliant Speed mare Mongolian Changa.

After scratching Medina Spirit out of the Sept. 25 Pennsylvania Derby (G1), Baffert kept him in California to face his elders Saturday and the 3-year-old handled them with ease as the 6-5 favorite.

Though the top two finishers and the betting favorite in the TVG Pacific Classic (G1) turned out for the Awesome Again, none of them factored in the finish as 54-1 longshot Stilleto Boy, who was third in the Shared Belief, was a distant second.

Up front, after beating Tizamagician to the front entering the first turn in the 1 1/8-mile Awesome Again, Medina Spirit ($4.60) cruised along with a lead of about a length through a half-mile in :47:72 and six furlongs in 1:11.76. When the field turned into the stretch, Medina Spirit was the only one motoring at top speed and turned the race into a rout.

Ahead by three lengths at the eighth pole, he extended the margin in the final furlong while completing the nine furlongs in 1:49.67 on the fast track.

Stilleto Boy, a Shackleford gelding owned by Steve Moger and trained by Ed Moger Jr., was second by two lengths over C R K Stable's Express Train, a Union Rags colt who was the beaten favorite in the Pacific Classic. The winner of that race, Tripoli, was another 1 1/4 lengths back in fourth.

It was the seventh Awesome Again win for Baffert."I'm happy for Zedan and what we have had to

deal with," said Baffert, who has been suspended by Churchill Downs through the conclusion of the track's 2023 spring meet and is battling the New York Racing Association in federal court over the organization's attempts to suspend him. "We stayed focused on the horses. The fans came out to see this horse and they are rooting for him. I could tell by the crowd noise. They are all pulling for him. It's an emotional win for us." BH

GOING TO VEGAS LEADS THE WAY TO RODEO DRIVE VICTORYBy Claire Crosbyt @BH_CCrosby

Going to Vegas is going to the Breeders' Cup.

The 4-year-old Goldencents filly bounded to the lead under Umberto Rispoli and stayed there Oct. 2 in the $302,000 Rodeo Drive Stakes (G1T) at Santa Anita Park, earning her first top-level victory by a head and securing an automatic berth in the Nov. 6 Maker's Mark Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf (G1T) through the Breeders' Cup Challenge series.

Going to Vegas came off a win in the Sept. 4 John C. Mabee Stakes (G2T) at Del Mar and has now won three in a row for Abbondanza Racing, Medallion Racing, and MyRacehorse.

Her fellow Richard Baltas trainee Luck, the 2-1 second choice off a huge Aug. 7 allowance win at Del Mar, made a bold run after racing off the pace under Flavien Prat, and even though she could not get to the winner in time, Baltas was beyond pleased with the result.

"I'm thrilled with both performances," he said. "Going to Vegas has the tactical speed and loves going a mile and a quarter, and she showed it. It was a great ride by (Rispoli). My other horse, Luck, really moved up in class. I was really happy with her performance. She really improved in a grade 1. I'm looking forward to the future with her.

"We will see how the two horses come out of the race tomorrow, but I feel that both horses are heading to the Breeders' Cup."

After galloping through splits of :24.35, :48.72, 1:13.49, and 1:36.35, Going to Vegas kicked into high gear upon Rispoli's cue turning for home to finish in 1:58.84 on a firm course. She returned $4.20. Dogtag finished third, 3 1/2 lengths in front of Neige Blanche.

"I was busy because I could feel Flavien was coming. I knew he was coming fast, but we handled pretty well," Prat said. "I credit the owners and Richard as well. She's a grade 1 winner now. The next

step is a Breeders' Cup."Bred in Kentucky by J.

Kirk and Judy Robison out of the black-type winning Johannesburg mare Hard to Resist, Going to Vegas notched her third graded stakes score to improve her record to 7-8-2 from 22 starts, with earnings of $634,151. She is the first stakes winner out of her dam, who also produced the winning Diabolical filly Very Cherry. The mare has a yearling Grazen filly named Brand Loyalty, produced a colt by Om Feb. 18, and was bred back to Grazen for 2022. BH

DR. SCHIVEL WINS SPRINT CHAMPIONSHIP ON ONE REINBy Tracy Gantz

Flavien Prat had only one useful rein to guide Dr. Schivel for almost the entire six furlongs of the

$200,500 Santa Anita Sprint Championship Stakes (G2) Oct. 2 at Santa Anita Park—and they won anyway.

After Dr. Schivel broke from the rail and Vertical Threat from post 2 took about a three-quarter-length lead, Prat appeared to bobble slightly. As trainer Mark Glatt explained later, the right rein came out of its keeper.

"I think he basically lost all control," said Glatt. "Prat said it happened when he grabbed him because when the horses cross over the chute, sometimes horses stutter-step there a little. When he took a little hold, it (the rein) popped right out of there."

Once that happened, Dr. Schivel decided that he needed the lead to do his job and win the race. He moved up inside of Vertical Threat and took the lead at the half-mile pole, surprising many onlookers, including co-owner Tim Cohen. In the past, when his jockey has had both reins, Dr. Schivel has come from off the pace to win, which had worked well for the past four consecutive races.

The 3-year-old Violence colt did what he'd been trained to do—go to the front—only in this case he decided when.

It didn't matter. Dr. Schivel drew away from the field and won by 3 1/4 lengths in a final time of 1:09.44 on the fast track. He paid $5.60 for a $2 win ticket.

He won so easily that it looked as if Prat was patting the colt on the right side of his head. In fact, Prat was trying to hold on to the right side of the bridle so that he could try to help guide his mount.

"I had just the left rein after we left the chute at around the 5 1/2-furlong mark," said Prat. "It was kind of scary. This has never happened to me before. The horse was very proficient. Everything was normal otherwise."

Glatt noted that they were lucky Dr. Schivel is "a good boy because if he had made any mistakes without any control…" The trainer then shook his head, recognizing how it could have gone so wrong.

"That's why Flavien kind of let him just roll because the last thing he can do is grab him at all," Glatt explained.

Flagstaff closed for second, a nose in front of C Z Rocket, the 2020 Sprint Championship winner.

Dr. Schivel was coming off a win in the July 3 Bing Crosby Stakes (G1), where he earned a Breeders' Cup Challenge berth to the Breeders' Cup Sprint (G1). Saturday's win was also worth a berth to the race.

His four-race win streak began when he broke his maiden at the 2020 Del Mar meeting and continued through the 2020 Runhappy Del Mar Futurity (G1) and an allowance/optional claiming race after a layoff and prior to the Bing Crosby.

William Branch, who co-owns Dr. Schivel with the Cohen family's Red Baron's Barn, Rancho Temescal and William Dean Reeves' Reeves Thoroughbred Racing, bred Dr. Schivel in Kentucky in partnership with Arnold Hill. The Cohens bought a majority interest in the colt after his maiden victory. Luis Mendez trained Dr. Schivel at 2, with Glatt taking over this year. The colt is out of the Mining for Money mare Lil Nugget, whose last reported foal is the placed 2-year-old colt Barsini Red, by Midshipman. The mare was bred to Anthony's Cross for 2022.

Now with a record of 5-1-1 from seven starts, Dr. Schivel has bankrolled $536,000.

If all goes well, the next stop for Dr. Schivel will be the Breeders' Cup. While he earned his berth in the Bing Crosby, winning with only one rein in the Sprint Championship may have really told the tale of Dr. Schivel's talent.

Or as Cohen quipped, "He's going to be really good with two reins." BH

MO FORZA, UNITED REPEAT IN SANTA ANITA TURF STAKESBy Christine Osert @BH_COser

Mo Forza came with a strong rally to run down Smooth Like Strait and capture the $200,000

City of Hope Mile Stakes (G2T) for the second straight year Oct. 2 at Santa Anita Park. It was the fourth consecutive graded win for the 5-year-old son of Uncle Mo—all under Flavien Prat—and his second since returning from a layoff of more than 10 months in August for Bardy Farm and OG Boss.

The timing of the win was special for the connections. Longtime horseman Barry Abrams of Bardy Farm, who also bred Mo Forza, died last October.

"This horse is continuing Barry's legacy. He means the world to us," said brother David Abrams. "He runs with an angel on his shoulder, I truly believe that. Look at his last two races, that's Barry bringing him home."

The win was also a birthday gift for trainer Peter Miller, who turned 55 Saturday.

"I was very worried the first minute and 30 seconds. I felt a lot better the last two and a half seconds," Miller said. "The pace was quick in the early going, then it slowed down and then they picked it up again. I didn't have any pre-race instructions for Flavien. I left the plans in Flavien's hands. It is up to him. He knows the horse. If the pace is fast, he'll lay back. If it's a moderate pace, we'll be up close. Our next stop is the Breeders' Cup."

Smooth Like Strait and longshot Red Storm Risen battled on the lead through fractions of :22.61 and :46.66 for the first half. Mo Forza was last of five at that point with 3 1/4 lengths to make up. Smooth Like Strait shook off a retreating Red Storm Risen to lead by 1 1/2 lengths as he ran three-quarters in 1:08.98. But once Prat tipped out Mo Forza, the bay quickly made up ground on the leader.

Mo Forza closed for a half-length victory, completing the mile on firm turf in 1:32.45. He paid $3.20 to win on a $2 ticket as the 3-5 favorite.

"It was a bit of an awkward race. First quarter was pretty fast, I felt like it was pretty fast. Then we hit the first turn and slowed down a lot, then we got to the backside and took off again, so it was a bit of an awkward race," Prat said. "After that they all came up to me around the far turn, I was trying to get him together, to regroup and get a good run down the lane and that's what he did. He showed a lot of class today.

"He's definitely one who always gives you everything. He has a great turn of foot and it's always a pleasure riding him. Peter did a great job of bringing him back off a long layoff last time and again today, it was a real pleasure."

Smooth Like Strait held for second by a head over Hit the Road. Red Storm Risen and Order and Law completed the order of finish.

Mo Forza was bred in Kentucky and is the first foal out of the Unusual Heat mare Inflamed, who dropped a full brother to Mo Forza this year.

Saturday's victory brought Mo Forza's earnings to $1,034,460. The horse holds an 8-3-1 record from 14 starts.

United Gets His Nose DownLNJ Foxwoods' United made it a close call, but

managed to get his nose down to take the $203,500 John Henry Turf Championship Stakes (G2T) for the second year in a row Saturday at Santa Anita.

Prat piloted the 6-year-old Giant's Causeway gelding to notch his fourth win on the card.

"I thought I got it, but I heard there was a picture, so I guess it was pretty close, closer than I thought," Prat said. "It took me forever to get him up, so I didn't see there was a picture actually. It's always great to win a race prior to the Breeders' Cup and it seems like he's doing great. He always does great actually, and it is really fun to be around him."

United raced in the last two editions of the Longines Breeders' Cup Turf (G1T), finishing second to eventual Horse of the Year Bricks in Mortar in 2019 at Santa Anita. Saturday's win left trainer Richard Mandella happy and confident ahead of another go.

"I didn't think he quite got there. I was accepting second, third, and another good race. But what a great feeling when they said I won," Mandella said. "I always expect it but it doesn't always happen. He couldn't look better, train better, so we expected him to run like he did.

"We'll aim for the Breeders' Cup. He's like part of the family. He's an old gelding, been around a long time. You tend to get to know him as well as you know people. He likes seeing us and we like seeing him."

Acclimate showed the way with splits of :22.70, :46.32, 1:11.42, and 1:35.01 through the first mile. United was back in eighth 4 1/2 lengths off the leader with a quarter-mile to run. Prat angled his mount five wide and United, with trailer Friar's Road in close pursuit, got up to claim victory by the narrowest of margins. Acclimate held on for second another nose ahead of Friar's Road in third.

United paid $4.80 as the 7-5 favorite. He completed the 1 1/4 miles on firm turf in 1:58.41.

An earner of $1,813,549, United has a record of 10-4-1 in 22 starts. He was purchased by Solis/Litt for $300,000 from the Four Star Sales consignment in 2016 at The Saratoga Sale, Fasig-Tipton's select yearling sale in New York. Previously he was bought for $240,000 by Glencrest Farm from Trackside Farm's consignment to the 2015 Keeneland November Breeding Stock Sale.

United was bred by Rosemont Farm in Kentucky out of the Pulling Punches mare Indy Punch. He is a half brother to graded stakes winner Harlan Punch, stakes winner Tensas Punch, and group-placed Royal Navy Ship. Indy Punch's most recent foal is a yearling War Front colt. The mare was bred to Into Mischief for 2022. BH

ART COLLECTOR EARNS GRADE 1 HONORS IN WOODWARDBy Bob Ehaltt @BobEhalt

Cutting back from three turns to one is hardly the textbook path to victory in a grade 1 stakes, but

such details do not seem to faze Bruce Lunsford's Art Collector.

"That's unusual," trainer Bill Mott said about the different type of trips. "I guess he's pretty smart. He's got a great disposition because it didn't confuse him."

Yes, Art Collector surely turned in a "smart" effort Oct. 2 as he grabbed the lead and never looked back under jockey Luis Saez in capturing the $500,000 Woodward Stakes (G1) at Belmont Park by 1 1/2 lengths over Godolphin's favored Maxfield.

"It was a strong race and he's put three of them together. He's a very nice horse," Mott said about Lunsford's homebred son of Bernardini.

Speaking of smarts, Mott has what can be considered a doctorate in turning horses into grade 1 winners and his third start with Art Collector was definitely the charm in several ways.

Since taking over the care of a horse who was a grade 2 winner for original trainer Tom Drury, Mott has run Art Collector three times. Each was at a 1 1/8-mile distance, but they covered two turns, then three, and now one.

Another common element, and the most important one of all, is that all three stakes ended with Art Collector in front as he prevailed in the Alydar Stakes at Saratoga Race Course and then the Charles Town Classic

Stakes (G2), the aforementioned three-turn jaunt.Next, if the next five weeks unfold as planned, Art

Collector may return to two turns with a long run to the first turn as Mott indicated the $6 million 1 1/4-mile Longines Breeders' Cup Classic (G1) at Del Mar seems a proper fit for the 4-year-old colt.

"I don't know what we have to lose. I'll run him a mile and a quarter. I'll talk with Mr. Lunsford, he makes the final decisions, but a mile and an eighth hasn't been a problem for him," Mott said.

A problem in the Classic could come from the prospect of a duel on the front end with the ultra-speedy multiple grade 1-winning Knicks Go, a front-running winner of the Lukas Classic Stakes (G3) Saturday at Churchill Downs, but Mott was not bothered by that prospect.

"I'm not afraid," he said about running in the Classic. The win was the eighth in 15 starts for Art Collector,

who posted five of those wins with Drury, including a victory in the 2020 Toyota Blue Grass Stakes (G2). In his first start of the year, and last for Drury, he was sixth in the seven-furlong Kelly's Landing Overnight Stakes at Churchill Downs. It was his third straight loss after a streak of four wins in a row.

"When he came to me, he had a race under his belt and was ready to go," Mott said. "With the racing, he got better and stronger and today was the result."

Out of the Distorted Humor mare Distorted Legacy, Art Collector is his dam's second foal and first stakes winner. The mare also has 2-year-old and yearling colts by Into Mischief, the former named Legionnaire, and a weanling Justify filly. She was bred to Medaglia d'Oro for 2022.

Art Collector's masterpiece saw him lead by a half-length through fractions of :24:02 and :47.78. Ahead by 1 1/2 lengths after six furlongs in 1:12.12, the main threat in the field of six came from 4-5 favorite Maxfield moved off the rail to take aim at Art Collector in the stretch, but the homebred son of Street Sense was unable to put much of a dent in the lead in the final furlong.

"It was a wonderful race. I had a lot of confidence in my horse. He always tries so hard. He always comes

with a run and finishes with run and today he ran his race," said Saez, who most likely will ride Godolphin's top 3-year-old Essential Quality in the Classic.

Final time on the fast track was 1:49.22 as Art Collector ($7.50), the 5-2 second choice, increased his earnings to $1,535,305.

For the grade 1-winning Maxfield, it was just his third loss in a 10-race career that has featured seven wins, two seconds, and a third.

"He never lets us down," said trainer Brendan Walsh. "All credit to the winner. He ran a good race and he's a good horse. We ran a good race to be second."

Walsh added that Maxfield figures to join Godolphin's Brad Cox-trained Essential Quality in the field for the Nov. 6 Classic at Del Mar.

"I can't see why not," he said about a trip to California. "He still hasn't done anything wrong. Every race is different and our day will come, too."

St. Elias Stable's Dr Post, a 4-year-old son of Quality Road who was third in the TVG Pacific Classic (G1) at Del Mar, was a length back in third Saturday for trainer Todd Pletcher. Grade 1 winner Code of Honor ran fourth. BH

JACK CHRISTOPHER TAKES COMMAND IN CHAMPAGNE STAKESBy Eric Mitchellt @BH_EMitchell

Running true to his odds as the 8-5 favorite, Jack Christopher captured the

$500,000 Champagne Stakes (G1) Oct. 2 at Belmont Park by more than two lengths over graded stakes winners Gunite and Wit.

The strapping son of Munnings, owned by Jim Bakke, Gerald Isbister, Coolmore Stud, and Peter Brant, stalked early leader and Hopeful Stakes (G1) winner Gunite in the early going, then took command as they rounded the turn. The colt trained by Chad Brown and ridden by Jose Ortiz pulled away to an easy victory, stopping the timer for a mile on a fast track in 1:37.31.

Jack Christopher stamped himself as a serious contender in his division when he won his debut Aug. 28 by 8 3/4 lengths in a six-furlong maiden special weight at Saratoga Race Course. His performance was so impressive that handicappers made him the heavy favorite over Gunite and Wit. The latter won the Sanford Stakes (G3) and was the only other stakes winner in the field.

Gunite shook free in the early going to take the lead but Jack Christopher moved quickly into a stalking position. Gunite, Winchell Thoroughbreds' homebred son of Gun Runner, led through an opening quarter in :23.57 and a half in :46.49 but in mid-turn he and Jack Christopher were bridle-to-bridle.

With the shake of the right rein from Ortiz, Jack Christopher pulled away and never faced a serious challenge. Longshot Commandperformance put in a strong run in mid-stretch to finish second, followed by Wit in third.

"He gave me a great kick," said Ortiz. "When he passed (Gunite), he stopped running a little bit. He didn't give me everything he had, I believe. I think first time going a mile this will help him for that next step."

Brown said Jack Christopher showed his exceptional talent as early as his first work.

"I was on the phone with the connections saying, 'This is potentially a really good horse. I can't believe what I just saw,'" the trainer said. "He's just been

brilliant in every work. There was some buzz around him before he ran, and he lived up to it."

Jack Christopher is Brown's third Champagne winner, following Complexity in 2018 and Practical Joke in 2016.

The Champagne Stakes is a Breeders' Cup Challenge race for the TVG Breeders' Cup Juvenile Presented by Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance (G1). Complexity went to be unplaced in the Juvenile and Practical Joke was third. Brown said he's hoping Jack Christopher follows in the steps of Good Magic, who was second in the 2017 Champagne and went on to win the Juvenile and 2-year-old championship honors.

"Where does he fall? I hope with Good Magic. He looks a lot like him," said Brown when asked to compare the three runners. "What I like a lot about him is that he switches off nicely. He's not a horse that pulls. If you drop your hands, he'll switch off and rate. Will he do that around two turns? I don't know, but we'll be sure to have him prepared in the morning to take a little dirt and sit. We'll see if he can do it at Del Mar."

Jockey Tyler Gaffalione aboard Commandperformance said Repole Stable and St. Elias Stable's son of Union Rags put himself in a great spot down the backside.

"I was able to see everybody in front of me. Going around the turn, I started to get him into gear and he kept responding," Gaffalione said. "His gallop out was great. He seems like he'll love the distance going forward."

Byron Hughes, assistant to trainer Todd Pletcher, said he was happy with Commandperformance's run.

"He had the outside post and Tyler took advantage of that. He kept him out there and kept his face clean. He was gaining on the winner at the end and had a good gallop out. We're happy with the effort."

Hughes also saddled Repole Stable, St. Elias Stable, and Gainesway's Wit, a son of Practical Joke, who was slow out of the gate and the trailer in the early going.

"It was his typical start," he said about Wit. "I don't think he's ever going to be that fast out of the gate.

Irad (Ortiz Jr.) got him into a good rhythm, but he had a little trouble there on the turn. He made up some ground but just couldn't get to the winner."

Jack Christopher paid $5.40, $3.40, and $2.70. Commandperformance paid $7.10 and $3.10, and Wit paid $2.60. A $2 exacta paid $45.40.

After his Champagne victory, Jack Christopher has earnings of

$330,000 from his two wins in as many starts. He was bred in Kentucky by Castleton Lyons and Kilboy Estate out of the Half Ours mare Rushin No Blushin, a half sister to multiple grade 1 winner and sire Street Boss, whose last reported foal is a yearling Mo Town filly. The mare was bred to Complexity for 2022.

BSW/Crow bought Jack Christopher for $135,000 from Paramount Sales' consignment to the 2020 Fasig-Tipton Kentucky October Yearlings Sale. BH

SAIL BY, ARREST ME RED TOP TURF ACTION AT BELMONTBy BloodHorse Staff

Treadway Racing Stable's Sail By, ridden by Junior Alvarado, returned to the grass Oct. 2 after an

off-the-turf start to capture the $200,000 Miss Grillo Stakes (G2T) at Belmont Park.

Trained by Leah Gyarmati, the Astern filly entered the 1 1/16-mile contest for juvenile fillies over the firm inner turf off a third-place finish in the P. G. Johnston Stakes, which was moved to seven furlongs on the main track Sept. 2 at Saratoga Race Course from the Miss Grillo distance on turf.

Breaking from the rail, Sail By tracked front-running longshot Charlee O as the two fillies quickly separated from their competitors through splits of :23.59, :49.40, and 1:14.46.

Alvarado moved Sail By closer to the leader as the field rounded the far turn and hit the front for the stretch drive with plenty in the tank. Sail By was able to hold off a late challenge from Chad Brown-trained runners—Kinchen and the heavy favorite McKulick—securing a one-length victory in a final time of 1:43.21. Kinchen completed the exacta by a head over McKulick.

"She broke very sharply," Alvarado said, "She was laying second beautifully and was relaxing nicely. I knew I was going to have horse turning for home."

Alvarado said he felt his filly would handle the added distance from her last start.

"I always thought she wouldn't have a problem stretching out," Alvarado said. "I was hoping she wouldn't get too sharp at the beginning. I knew she would get the distance for sure."

Gyarmati said the game plan was to take a wait-and-see approach.

"We really didn't have a big plan. We had the one hole and she looked in the paddock like she was pretty sharp," Gyarmati said. "I'm glad (Alvarado) did things just as he did. He let her break and she broke really well and the other horse went which was perfect because it got her to settle."

Gyarmati said she will confer with owner-breeder Jeff Treadway regarding a potential start in the Nov. 5 Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf (G1T) at Del Mar.

"Any time you're even thinking about having that kind of opportunity is wonderful," Gyarmati said. "I'll have to talk to Jeff, but I'm sure he is game and wants to go. That's a conversation we'll have to have."

Philly Eagles completed the superfecta. Hail To and pacesetter Charlee O rounded out the order of finish.

Sail By returned $26.60 for a $2 win bet and improved her record to 2-1-1 from four starts. She now sports earnings of $193,900.

Bred in Kentucky by her owner, Sail By is the first foal out of the Johar mare Fly By. The mare also has a yearling colt by Astern, a weanling colt by Oscar Performance, and was bred to Goldencents for 2022.

Arrest Me Red Takes Turf SprintLael Stables' homebred Arrest Me Red led wire-to-

wire to capture Saturday's $200,000 Belmont Turf Sprint Invitational Stakes (G3T), a six-furlong inner turf test for 3-year-olds and up at Belmont Park.

Trained by Wesley Ward and aggressively handled from post 2 by Irad Ortiz, Jr., the 3-year-old Pioneerof the Nile colt was sent straight to the front through splits of :22.33 and :45.75 over the firm footing with Guildsman pressing in second.

Pulsate loomed large through the turn with Chewing Gum also ranging in contention, but Arrest Me Red continued to find more at the top of the lane and stayed on strong for a one-length win in a final time of 1:07.86. Pulsate completed the exacta by three quarters of a length over Chewing Gum.

The victory marked the third Belmont Turf Sprint Invitational win for Ortiz following scores with Disco Partner in 2017-18.

"He relaxed so well. He did everything right, honestly," Ortiz said of Arrest Me Red. "He broke well from the gate, and I just stayed quiet and relaxed. I was on the front, so I just was biding my time to go. He was traveling perfectly and when I asked him to run, he responded really well. Wesley did a great job with him. He's a great guy to ride for."

Arrest Me Red was sent to post as the 2-1 mutuel favorite out of a neck score in the 5 1/2-furlong Mahony Stakes Aug. 11 at Saratoga. He paid $6.60 for a $2 win wager.

Rounding out the order of finish were Backtohisroots, Therapist, Guildsman, and Buy Land and See. Piedi Bianchi and Belgrane were scratched.

A Kentucky homebred, Arrest Me Red improved his record to four wins from six starts with earnings of $261,300. He is out of the Medaglia d'Oro mare Maraschino Red and is a half brother to stakes winner Hidden Treat. The dam has since produced Father Red, an unraced 2-year-old Quality Road colt, and a yearling City of Light colt. She was bred to Honor A. P. for 2022. BH

KNICKS GO TAKES LUKAS CLASSIC AHEAD OF BC CLASSIC BIDBy Bob Kieckhefer

If there was any concern about Knicks Go's performance in the $337,000 Lukas Classic (G2)

Oct. 2 at Churchill Downs, it might be whether he got enough out of it to set him up for the Nov. 6 Longines Breeders' Cup Classic (G1) at Del Mar.

It was that easy. After leading five rivals through leisurely fractions,

Knicks Go was looking at the crowd through the final furlong and jockey Joel Rosario was peeking back in search of nonexistent company.

Despite being geared down well before the wire, Knicks Go won by four lengths and finished the 1 1/8 miles on the fast track in 1:47.85, missing by about half a second the track record set in 1999 by Victory Gallop. That was despite an opening half-mile in :47.27, compared with the :44.68 clocked by allowance horses in the next race.

Independence Hall turned for home second after chasing Knicks

Go down the backstretch and finished there, never threatening the winner. Shared Sense, Knicks Go's stablemate in the Brad Cox barn, finished third and old rival Tacitus ran evenly to finish fourth.

Cox and Rosario swept both features on the Saturday card as Shortleaf Stable's Plainsman got through along the rail to post a minor upset in the $297,250 Ack Ack Stakes (G3) going a one-turn mile.

As easy as the Lukas Classic looked on the track, Jun Park, American representative for the Korea Racing Authority, said the horse entered the race with some question marks.

"We came here to this race with a couple concerns because he had never won at Churchill Downs," Park said. "He finished second in the Breeders' Cup (Juvenile, G1) as a 2-year-old. But this time, he won easily—and what a nice horse."

Knicks Go's last defeat was a fourth-place finish in the June 5 Hill 'n' Dale Metropolitan Handicap (G1) at Belmont Park. Since then, he is 3-for-3.

"He was training just as well working up to the Met Mile," Cox said. "Obviously, if he wasn't, we wouldn't have taken that chance. But it was a grade 1 and it was there. Didn't work out. Got him back around two turns and he's pretty solid around two turns, to say the least."

Asked about getting the 1 1/4 miles at Del Mar, Cox said, "Well, sure. That's his trip. That's what we're going to do—take it to 'em and see if it works."

Earlier in the week, Knicks Go leapfrogged stablemate Essential Quality back into first place in the Longines Breeders' Cup Classic Rankings.

Knicks Go, out of the Outflanker mare Kosmo's Buddy, was acquired by the KRA at the 2017 Keeneland September Yearling Sale for the bargain price of $87,000 out of the Woods Edge Farm consignment. Bred in Maryland by Angie Moore, he was originally a $40,000 purchase by Northface Bloodstock when consigned by Bill Reightler, agent, at the 2016 Keeneland November Breeding Stock Sale.

He started to return on the KRA's investment early, finishing third in the Arlington-Washington Futurity at Arlington International Racecourse, then romping home a 5 1/2-length winner in the Claiborne Breeders' Futurity (G1) at Keeneland, the latter at 70-1 odds. The punters remained unimpressed as he was dispatched at odds of 40-1 in the Sentient Jet Breeders' Cup Juvenile, yielding late to finish second to Game Winner.

He leveled off after that in a long stretch of disappointments that ended with a pair of victories, separated by a seven-month layoff—good enough to make him the favorite in the 2020 Big Ass Fans Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile (G1) at Keeneland, which he won by 3 1/2 lengths.

A win in the 1 1/8-mile Pegasus World Cup Invitational Stakes (G1) at Gulfstream Park then served as a prep for a fourth-place showing in the $20 million Saudi Cup and another fourth in the Met Mile and victories in the Prairie Meadows Cornhusker Handicap (G3) and the Whitney Stakes (G1) at Saratoga Race Course.

The name "Knicks Go," by the way, has nothing to do with New York's entry in the NBA. Rather, it refers to a proprietary nicking system the Korea Racing Association uses in long-range planning for its breeding program as it seeks to ascend the ladder in world racing.

Park also addressed the ongoing debate about whether the horse's name is pronounced "K-nicks" or simply "Nicks." He said leaving the "K" silent "sounds good."

Now with earnings of $5,553,135, Knicks Go holds a 9-3-1 record in 23 starts.

In the Ack Ack, Plainsman was reserved off the early speed, found plenty of room along the inside through the final furlong, and held off a late bid by the odds-on favorite, previously undefeated 3-year-old Beau Liam, to post his fourth win from his last five starts.

The 6-year-old son of Flatter out of the Street Sense mare S S Pinafore could be headed to a Breeders' Cup engagement too, although Cox said he will huddle with owner John Ed Anthony of Shortleaf Stable.

"We'll talk it over and come up with a game plan," Cox said. "See who shows up in California and see if it makes sense."

Bred in Kentucky by Joe Minor, Plainsman was purchased for $350,000 by Shortleaf from Taylor

Made Sales Agency's consignment to the 2016 Keeneland September Yearling Sale. He has

earned $729,207 with an 8-6-3 record in 25 starts. BH

SCIENCE FRICTION IS FIRST WINNER FOR OCEAN KNIGHTBy Eric Mitchellt @BH_EMitchell

Longshot Science Friction overcame a rough start in the second race Oct. 2 at Gulfstream Park to win in front-

running style, giving graded stakes winner and Louisiana-based freshman sire Ocean Knight his first winner.

The bay filly owned by Big Bang Racing and trained by Armando de la Cerda won the seven-furlong $23,000 maiden race for fillies by 1 1/2 lengths. The final time was 1:27.09. She won in her second start.

Bred in Florida by Debbie Walsh, Science Friction is out of the winning Imperialism mare Political Miss. The mare won $162,135 as a racehorse and now has produced two winners from as many to race. The family has produced Cryptic, a grade 3-placed stakes winner by Roberto. RDZ Farm bought Science Friction for $4,000 at the 2020 Ocala Breeders' Sales October Yearling Sale from Getaway Farm's consignment.

Ocean Knight is a grade 3-winning son of Curlin out of the Stormy Atlantic mare Ocean Goddess. He won his only start at 2 and at 3 won the Sam F. Davis Stakes (G3) at Tampa Bay Downs for Stonestreet Stables and trainer Kiaran McLaughlin. He also finished third in the Discovery Handicap (G3) at 3 and was third in the Kelso Handicap (G2) at 4. He was retired with 4-3-2 record from 15 starts and earned $390,000.

Ocean Knight stands at Averett Farm in Louisiana for $4,000. BH

TRUESHAN TURNS BACK STRADIVARIUS IN PRIX DU CADRANBy Lee Mottershead/Racing Post

We had to wait almost an entire season to see it, but on an autumn afternoon in Paris the clash

between Trueshan and Stradivarius finally happened. After Trueshan's triumph and Stradivarius's honorable defeat, it may not happen again.

They had met once before, when 62 lengths separated the two star stayers on British Champions Day. This time the margin was 4 1/2 lengths, but while Trueshan will surely be a racecourse force for many years, his Oct. 2 Qatar Prix du Cadran (G1) victim may have raced for the final time.

The gluey ground was much better suited to Trueshan than the gallant runner-up, but even taking that into account, Stradivarius's owner Bjorn Nielsen sounded more than ever before as though the time may have come to retire the most prolific winner of European group races there has ever been.

A decision will be made after talks next week with joint-trainer John Gosden. The latter was absent from ParisLongchamp, as were Trueshan's trainer Alan King and the horse's suspended regular rider Hollie Doyle.

In her absence, James Doyle did a marvelous job, driving Trueshan to his second group 1 victory after a duel up the home straight with Stradivarius that eventually became rather one-sided.

"He stays all day and has a good kick on this ground as well," said Doyle, who described the success as "fantastic" but qualified that with words of commiseration for his namesake.

"Hollie has been a big part of this horse's career and to miss out today through suspension is pretty tough," he added. "I'm thinking of her, but it's not the first time it's happened in racing and it won't be the last. She has a lot to look forward to with him."

Trueshan could return to Longchamp for the Prix Royal-Oak (G1) if he does not seek to defend his QIPCO British Champions Long Distance Cup (G2) crown at Ascot, where last year's Cadran heroine Princess Zoe heads after this time finishing fifth.

"We're proud of her and we'll have another go at Ascot," said trainer Tony Mullins. "Hopefully we can get

a crack at them there but the winner is a champion."So, too, is the runner-up."I think we got beat by a better horse on the day, but

he ran a great race," said Nielsen, who as good as ruled Stradivarius out of another Champions Day challenge, given the Ascot ground is almost certain to be soft or worse. We will not see Stradivarius there. We may not see him anywhere else.

Asked if his superstar would remain in training at 8, Nielsen added: "I don't know. He has been going a long time. He was so dominant across '18, '19, and '20, but age will ultimately get to you and he obviously isn't as dominant as he once was.

"I don't want to race him on like an old boxer who still thinks he's got it when everyone can see he doesn't. I'm not saying we're at that point, but at some stage you have to pull up stumps and say he isn't what he was. Again, I'm not saying that's today, but that day comes for every horse, even him.

"For as much as I want to see him stay in training, the worst thing would be for him to go downhill."

Nielsen then made clear his wish that, when the time comes, Stradivarius stands at stud in England. That would mean shorter visiting trips for Frankie Dettori, who parted with one champion in the Longchamp paddock when Enable bowed out there 12 months ago. He may well have parted with another.

"You tried so hard for me," he said, patting the horse's rump and adding: "I love you."

He may have been saying au revoir—but it could well have been goodbye.

LOVING DREAM GETS THE EDGE IN ROYALLIEU THRILLERBy Scott Burton/Racing Post

Loving Dream showed determination to battle back and nab Believe In Love in a nail-biting

conclusion to the Qatar Prix de Royallieu (G1) Oct. 2 at ParisLongchamp.

Andrea Atzeni looked to have timed his challenge just right on Believe In Love after Frankie Dettori, rider of Loving Dream, had cut out the pace for most of the 1 3/4-mile trip, but Lordship Stud's homebred fought back in the final strides to add to her Royal Ascot success earlier in the season.

"She may not have been 100% at York and she never got into that rhythm she usually does in her races and wasn't able to put her best foot forward then," said

Thady Gosden, joint-trainer of the winner. "She's enjoyed getting her toe in a bit more here.

"Frankie is a genius from the front, as he always tells us, and luckily today he was able to show us."

Atzeni was understandably disappointed to be edged out close home but hugely proud of the way Believe In Love put a poor performance at Goodwood behind her.

"Beforehand if you'd said I would finish second I'd have been happy, but when you're beaten a short head in a photo-finish it's hard to take," said Atzeni.

"The filly loves soft ground and although she's not the biggest she's got a massive heart. She disappointed for some reason at Goodwood but I think she's a better filly in the autumn."

SAFFRON BEACH DELIVERS FOR CHAPPLE-HYAM IN SUN CHARIOTBy David Milnes/Racing Post

Saffron Beach gained handsome revenge over her QIPCO One Thousand Guineas (G1) conqueror

Mother Earth in a rematch in the rain on the Rowley Mile Oct. 2 to give trainer Jane Chapple-Hyam her first top-level win in the Kingdom of Bahrain Sun Chariot Stakes (G1).

William Buick stepped in for the spare ride on the 5-1 chance and took no prisoners from the moment the gates opened, making all from his low draw to come clear of market leader Mother Earth, who finished a short head in front of gallant outsider Dreamloper.

The first and second were separated by a length when Mother Earth won five months ago over the same course and distance, but Saffron Beach turned the tables with a three-length romp.

A first win at the highest level was a long time coming for Australian Chapple-Hyam, who took her license out in 2005, and there could be more to come as Saffron Beach is set to race on in 2022.

The trainer had previously enjoyed group 3 success with not only this horse but Klammer, Mull of Killough, and Energia Davos.

She said: "It's fantastic to finally have our first group 1 winner and especially for it to be at our local track. That is some compensation for being beaten in the One Thousand Guineas, but we knew Saffron Beach was in top shape coming into the race today.

"The last furlong was a hard slog to watch and the whole race felt like it was two miles instead of one, but it's good to get the group 1 win next to her name.

"She knocked on the door at this level before, including when second in the One Thousand Guineas. We've always thought there was a group 1 for her and today is the day. You don't mind waiting if they do it in the end."

On the front-running tactics, the trainer added: "I left it entirely to William. I just said beforehand that she loves the track and was fit and strong and won't mind the ground.

"We dropped her in class to give her a confidence boost at Sandown last time to prepare for this and it couldn't have gone any better."

Buick, who later doubled up in the mile maiden on Al Mubhir, said: "She traveled nicely all the way through and did that very well. She was a nice spare ride to get and when the rain came we knew it would play to her strengths.

"Obviously, she's Adam Kirby's ride but he had to go to Ascot today. I spoke with him this morning and he

told me a lot about her and was a big help."

As to the immediate future, Chapple-Hyam added: "The owners, Ben Sangster and James Wigan, tell me she stays in training—but she won't be going to the Breeders' Cup as there's nothing for her. I believe there is the QEII Challenge Cup (G1T) at Keeneland on Oct. 16,

which has been discussed, but we'll have to see how she is on Monday."

Kevin Buckley, spokesman for Coolmore, owners of Mother Earth, said: "Mother Earth always turns up in these races and she's run another good race. The rain is now getting into the ground, but that is no excuse and we're delighted for Jane to win her first group 1."

Kieran Shoemark, rider of third placed Dreamloper, said: "She's run an absolute blinder to be honest and that is a career-best for sure. I was told to ride to try and get a place, and it's worked out a treat. She enjoyed the ground and fair play to Ed Walker."

Tattersalls Falmouth Stakes (G1) winner Snow Lantern was under pressure a long way out and trailed home last under Sean Levey.

MONTEFILIA, INCENTIVISE LIKELY TO MEET IN CAULFIELD CUPBy ANZ Bloodstock News Staff

There were never any questions surrounding Montefilia's talent,

but ahead of Randwick's Heineken Metropolitan Handicap (G1) a few had reserved judgement as to whether she could see out the 2,400 meters (about 1 1/2 miles) effectively. But Oct. 2, the daughter of Kermadec proved her many critics wrong, staying on strongly to clinch her third win at top-flight level and also providing her jockey Hugh Bowman with a century of group 1 victories.

A winner of the Darley Flight Stakes (G1) and Moet & Chandon Spring Champion Stakes (G1) last year, the 4-year-old mare entered the race having attempted the distance on two previous occasions last season, running fourth in the Bentley Australian Derby (G1) and fifth in the Star Australian Oaks (G1) and Saturday she cemented her claim to be considered among the very best middle distance horses in Australia with this latest group 1 success.

Winning trainer David Payne said he always retained faith the mare was a bona fide stayer and he is hoping she can repeat the feat on her next start and etch her name in the record books when she takes a shot at the Caulfield Cup (G1) on Oct. 16.

"Everybody said she couldn't stay a mile and a half, but I had no doubts. That's why she was in the race today," Payne said. "She is a special filly and we will go to the Caulfield Cup now. Why not? I'm pretty confident she gets the trip."

Having her third run this preparation, Montefilia settled nicely for Hugh Bowman back in ninth place before tracking up behind Entente at the 600-meter mark.

Urged by Bowman with 300 meters left to cover, the mare responded well and after battling bravely up the straight, hit the line a nose ahead of favorite

Entente, with Harpo Marx finishing another length and a quarter away in third.

In winning his 100th elite-level race, Bowman becomes only the fourth jockey to achieve the feat in Australia, joining George Moore, Damien Oliver, and Jim Cassidy.

Bowman is perhaps best known for his association with the great champion Winx, whose 25 wins at group 1 level equate to 25% of the jockey's wins at top-flight and he was very quick to propel her to the center of his celebrations.

"I must admit, I am very proud to have achieved it," Bowman said. "Obviously one horse was involved in a quarter of those 100 victories, which in itself is amazing."

It was Bowman's second win on Montefilia, having guided her to her Flight Stakes victory last season and he was quick to heap praise on her talent.

"She is a mighty mare. I have had a wonderful association with her," Bowman said. "Twelve months ago we were unexpected winners of the Flight Stakes and she has gone on to achieve at the highest level since then and also run consistently."

Incentivise wins the Turnbull Stakes at Flemington Racecourse

Montefilia was purchased by Dean Harvey's Baystone Farm as a weanling for AU$62,000 (US$46,128) at the 2018 edition of the Inglis Great Southern Sale from the Tyreel Stud draft, she was then subsequently re-offered by the same farm at the Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale the following year and was snapped up by Payne for AU$130,000 ($93,210).

The filly is one of four winners out of the British-bred stakes placed Shirocco mare Bana Wu, who was sold by Tyreel Stud for AU$92,500 ($71,984) at the 2018 Inglis Australian Broodmare and Weanling Sale to Victorian breeder Sean Duke. Her other winners include group 3-placed filly Nice For What.

The filly's third dam is group 3 winner Ausherra, who in turn produced group 2 winner Strategic Prince and the listed winner and group 2-placed Yorkshire.

Bana Wu's 2-year-old is a colt by Haunui Farm shuttler Ribchester and she missed to that same sire the following season. Last November, the mare was covered once again by Kermadec, who stands at Darley's Kelvinside base at a fee of AU$11,000 (inc GST).

When Montefilia lines up in the Caulfield Cup in a few weeks' time, she will most likely clash with the Peter Moody-trained Incentivise, who booked his ticket to the group 1 with a fine win in the TAB Turnbull Stakes (G1) at Flemington Saturday.

The 5-year-old gelding had been the talking horse ahead of the group 1 contest, largely due to his last-start victory in the PFD Food Services Makybe Diva Stakes (G1) on Sept. 11 and he did not let his many supporters down, fending off the strong threat of Young Werther, beating him by half a length. Chapada finished another length and three-quarters away in third.

The well-supported multiple group 1 winner Verry Elleegant finished 3 1/2 lengths adrift of the winner in fourth.

Having started his career with co-owner Steve Tregea in Queensland, Incentivise stretched his winning sequence to eight with Saturday's victory, his last two for new trainer Peter Moody.

"He's a bloody tough horse, isn't he," Moody said. "This will really bring him on for the Caulfield Cup.

"He came into this slightly soft, and I'm still learning about the horse and believe that this will just top him off lovely.

"He'll just stay at home for the next two weeks at Pakenham. The team do a great job."

Bred by Tregea's Windermere Stud, Incentivise, by Shamus Award, is the eighth of nine foals out of the deceased mare Miss Argyle (Iglesia) and half brother to group 3 winner Waikato Stud stallion Ardrossan and Queensland stakes winners Bergerac and Cheyenne Warrior.

Shamus Award is the sire of 16 stakes winners and Incentivise is one of four top-flight winners for the Rosemont Stud-based sire, who is standing at the Victorian farm at a fee of AU$33,000 (inc GST).

Later on in the afternoon at Randwick, Private Eye handed his sire Al Maher with his fifth group 1 winner when he prevailed in a close finish to win the TAB Epsom Handicap (G1).

Prior to Saturday, the Proven Thoroughbreds-raced gelding's biggest win came when he took out the Treasury Brisbane Queensland Guineas (G2) and he opened his account as a 4-year-old when he landed the Mostyn Copper Show County Handicap (G3) on Aug. 21.

However, the Joe Pride-trained gelding's last few starts this preparation have failed to live up to expectations, when running seventh in the Chandon Theo Marks Stakes (G2) and he was last seen finishing fourth in the Bill Ritchie Handicap (G3) on Sept. 18.

But Saturday he regained his winning thread, showing a brilliant burst of speed to come out on top of a blanket finish, beating Aramayo by a head, while Dalasan was another nose further back in third.

Pride—who was forced to watch the race from his home due to coronavirus restrictions—said: "You need luck in these Epsoms. They are hard to win but it all panned out beautifully and he has got an engine this horse. He's a ripper.

"When he won first-up, he signaled to me that day he had come back bigger and better than ever.

"In his last two starts, it's just hasn't worked out for him, but I knew in an Epsom, they are high-pressure races and it would suit him."

The victory provided Proven Thoroughbreds' Jamie Walters with his first group 1 winner and he expressed his delight at the result.

"I watched the race from my study at home and probably caused a noise issue in the street," Walter said. "I gave the horse a lot of encouragement over the final hundred or so.

"To win my first group 1 after so many years of trying is very satisfying. I bought my first horse as an owner about 40 years ago, but have been syndicating for about 20."

Walter, who splits his horses across three stables in two states, is the brother of Hall of Fame trainer the late Guy Walter, and it was his recommendation that led him to Pride.

"When Guy passed away Joe pretty much took over his stable and we earlier had a lot of discussions about trainers and he (Guy) really rated Joe," said Walter.

"I have about 100 horses on the books—about 20 or so with Joe, 60 to 70 with Steve O'Dea and Matt Hoysted, and now have a bunch of horses with Kerry Parker.

"Joe is a great horseman. He's not hard on the horses and he's very hands on. If you have a good horse there's no one better at prolonging a career. He's probably got 50 to 60 in work and he doesn't want to get any bigger so he doesn't lose that hands-on style."

Purchased for AU$62,500 ($44,269) at the Magic Millions Adelaide Yearling Sale in 2019, Private Eye is one of two winners out of Shamardal mare Confidential Queen.

Further back the gelding hails from the same family as listed winner Snippets' Lass, who is better known as the dam of group 1 winner and multiple champion sire Snitzel and his group 3-winning half brother Hinchinbrook, who stood at Yarraman Park Stud until his untimely death in 2018.

Confidential Queen's 3-year-old is called Secret Spy (Al Maher) and is unraced and she has most recently been covered by Arrowfield Stud shuttler Shalaa, having missed to that same stallion in 2020.

Private Eye joins Delicacy, Almalad, Fat Al, and Diamond Drille as Al Maher's other top flight winners and his overall stakes-winning haul stands at 34. The son of Danehill stands at Stockwell Thoroughbreds for a fee of AU$8,800 (inc GST).

Sire Tivaci Gets Breakthrough in FlightWaikato Stud's exciting young stallion Tivaci

entered uncharted waters Saturday when he sired his first group 1 winner courtesy of the the Gai Waterhouse- and Adrian Bott-trained Never Been Kissed, who flew through the torrid conditions at Randwick to seal a surprise victory in the Flight Stakes.

Unraced as a 2-year-old, Never Been Kissed broke her maiden first-up at Hawkesbury on Aug. 19, before adding to her winning record at Newcastle on Sept. 4. The filly then surrendered her unbeaten record on her previous start, when finishing a well-beaten ninth in the Darley Tea Rose Stakes (G2) two weeks' ago, but she put that defeat behind her with a brave victory Saturday.

After jumping smartly from barrier 3, Reagan Bayliss settled Never Been Kissed in third on the rails, stalking the early leaders. Hitting the front with 100 meters to go, she was headed by Hinged inside the final 50 meters, but fought back eventually beating that rival by a head. Startantes was a further two lengths further back in third.

It was the second win in the race for Waterhouse and Bott, with their first win in the 1600-meter (about one-mile) contest coming when Global Glamour was victorious in 2016 providing the co-trainers their first top-flight as a training partnership, while the daughter of Tivaci handed Waterhouse with her 10th win in the race overall.

"The Flight Stakes was our first group 1 in partnership, so it will always be a special race for us," Bott said.

"This is where it all started for us with Global Glamour.

"We just thought she would be a nice filly once she got out to this sort of trip," Bott said.

"She didn't quite have the brilliance of these fillies, or wasn't quite seasoned enough to be taking them on over the shorter, sharper trips. We were able to link in once she got over a bit further.

"I thought she ran well in the Tea Rose. Unfortunately, she was caught wide and covered plenty

of ground. They weren't making up much ground that day, so I felt she stuck on very well."

Never Been Kissed was beaten in the Tea Rose by the John Sargent-trained Four Moves Ahead, but that filly was unable to repeat those heroics Saturday, finishing sixth, 4 1/4 lengths off the winner, and her jockey Nash Rawiller said her chances were thwarted by her wide gate.

Bred and raced by Waikato Stud, Never Been Kissed is the first runner and first winner out of the three time-winning Savabeel mare Movie and her Sacred Falls 2-year-old will be offered by Ohukia Lodge at the New Zealand Bloodstock Ready To Run Sale next month. The colt is cataloged as Lot 218.

Movie herself is out of group 3 winner Tootsie, making her a three-quarter sister to three-time group 2 winner Ocean Emperor.

Tootsie herself is a sister to group 2 scorer Legless Veuve, while their three-quarter sister Far Fetched produced three-time group 1 winner Probabeel and their half sibling Eudora is the dam of Savvy Coup, whose two top-flight victories included a win in the 2018 Al Basti Equiworld Dubai New Zealand Oaks (G1).

Having drawn a blank with his first runners last season, Tivaci has hit the ground running with his 3-year-olds, siring six winners so far this season. Luckily for Waikato Stud, the son of High Chaparral has proved a very good match with daughters of his senior barnmate Savabeel, with Never Been Kissed being one of three winners out of Savabeel mares.

Savabeel himself is carving out an impressive record as a broodmare sire, with Never Been Kissed joining Savatoxl as the stallion's other group 1 winner in this category and she became his 14th stakes winner as a broodmare sire overall.

€1.2 MILLION PENJA TOPS ARQANA ARC SALEBy BloodHorse Staff

Group 3 winner Penja, entered in the Oct. 3 Prix de l'Opera Longines (G1) on the Qatar Prix de l'Arc

de Triomphe (G1) card at ParisLongchamp, topped the Oct. 2 Arqana Arc Sale when she sold to German connections for €1.2 million (US$1,391,020).

The 11th of 34 horses to pass through the ring, Penja was the cause of a long bidding battle between Stuart Boman of Blandford Bloodstock and an online bidder. The daughter of Camelot won the Prix de Psyche Sky Sports Racing (G3) in August and was second that month in the Prix de la Nonette (G2), both at Deauville.

"I bought her for Mr. Jurgen Sartori, a German customer," Boman said. "We are very happy with this purchase, it is an exceptional filly with a very nice acceleration. We had to fight, but it was worth it. We are delighted."

There were 19 horses sold for an average price of €261,842 ($303,522) and a turnover of €4,975,000 ($5,766,920).

In a joint statement issued after the sale, Arqana president Eric Hoyeau and executive director Freddy

Powell commented: "We would like to thank all of our salespeople for their loyalty as well as all buyers who have shown active on site or on Arqana Online for their confidence. We now wish good luck to all who have starters tomorrow and hope everyone will enjoy a beautiful day of racing." BH

GODOLPHIN LOOMS WITH ARC RUNNERS ADAYAR, HURRICANE LANEBy Scott Burton, Peter Scargill, and David Jennings/Racing Post

Impassioned cries of 'allez les bleus' are commonplace in Paris and they

are likely to be yelled with as much fervor at ParisLongchamp as they would be when the French national teams play, because this year Godolphin mean business in the Oct. 3 Qatar Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe (G1).

In Cazoo Derby (G1) winner Adayar and dual classic star Hurricane Lane, Godolphin make their strongest assault on Europe's biggest race for nearly two decades in a bid to add a crowning achievement to a season that has heralded a return of the operation to superpower status.

Trainer Charlie Appleby, who supplies both Godolphin runners, has spearheaded the rise of Sheikh Mohammed's behemoth back to the top of the world, delivering 11 group/grade 1 wins this year before the start of the weekend, and standing within touching distance himself of claiming a maiden British trainers' title and a first for a Godolphin trainer since 2004.

Leading the charge in the world's biggest races is where those associated with Godolphin feel it should be, with the back-to-back victories for Sakhee, bred and initially raced by the late Hamdan Al Maktoum, and Marienbard in 2001-02 ready to be added to on Sunday afternoon.

Adayar, who has been vying with Tarnawa for favoritism all week, is the chosen one for Appleby's first-choice rider William Buick, but he will need to overcome a less than helpful draw in stall 11.

Yet, the prospect of soft ground and a wide draw for Adayar have not created any concern for Appleby, as his 3-year-old seeks to emulate the likes of Sea The Stars, Workforce, and Golden Horn in winning the Arc in the same year as the Derby.

"Adayar showed as a 2-year-old he likes soft ground," Appleby said. "In the King George he showed his class, as the ground was plenty quick enough that day. We are certainly happier being on soft rather than quick ground going into an Arc. With his draw, it will come down to what the pace is on the day.

"Adayar has not missed a beat since the minor setback (before Arc trials day) and I couldn't be happier with his wellbeing."

With Buick riding Adayar, James Doyle takes the mount on Hurricane Lane as the rider seeks to go one better than when an agonizing second on Sea of Class in the 2018 Arc behind Enable.

"It can't have been an easy decision for Will, there's not too much between the two," Doyle said. "He's proven on soft ground and the trip's fine, back to a mile and a half should be perfect. He's won the Grand Prix de Paris (G1) round there, so he's had a good look at the place before."

Appleby is in agreement with Doyle about softer ground benefiting Hurricane Lane, with his stamina proven after winning the Cazoo St. Leger (G1) last month, though no Leger winner has gone on to Arc glory in the same season.

"We know the soft ground is going to suit Hurricane Lane," Appleby said. "But as a bonus, we know if it becomes a stamina-sapping Arc, he has already proven he has stamina in abundance.

"It's a double positive for him and I'm very pleased the way he has come out of the St Leger. He's had a busy season, so it has been a simple prep to have him ready for the Arc."

He added: "William and James know the horses well. They know their strengths. When the gates open, they will know where they should be placing their horses."

Tarnawa Weld's Biggest Chance for Arc ScoreHe has won 26 European classics, conquered the

Melbourne Cup (G1) twice, the Hong Kong Mile (G1), the Secretariat (G1T), and Belmont Stakes (G1), but the Arc still eludes one of the greatest trainers Ireland has ever produced. Could Tarnawa be the one to crown the stellar 49-year training career of Dermot Weld?

This is unquestionably his best ever chance of landing Europe's biggest prize.

Tarnawa is vying for favoritism with Adayar and few could argue with her position at the top of the market. This has been the ultimate aim for the 5-year-old daughter of Shamardal, who was purposely held back for an autumn campaign.

Last year's Prix de l'Opera Longines (G1) winner has since proven herself to be every bit as good as the boys on the biggest stages of all.

A stunning late surge saw her land the 2020 Longines Breeders' Cup Turf (G1T) at Keeneland in November. It was not any old Breeders' Cup Turf either, it was one that contained the seven-time group 1 winner Magical as well as Lord North and Mogul. She came widest of all, late and fast, and won a shade snugly at the line under Colin Keane.

The Arc is a "Win and You're In" race for the Breeders' Cup Turf, which will be held this year Nov. 6 at Del Mar.

Her first start at 5 was as straightforward as her starting price suggested when she won the Grant Thornton Ballyroan Stakes (G3) at Leopardstown by 6 1/2 lengths.

We presumed she would defend her Qatar Prix Vermeille (G1) crown after that but Weld thought otherwise. Tarnawa was back over a mile and two furlongs for the Irish Champion Stakes (G1), a bold move by a trainer who is never afraid to shirk a challenge. She was beaten but, if anything, in getting within three quarters of a length of the recently retired St Mark's Basilica she enhanced her reputation.

Over a trip short of her best, on ground that was faster than she would like, she was just denied having been carried across the track by the wayward winner.

This is her date with destiny.Weld said of Tarnawa: "She's a tough, very genuine,

and consistent filly and her preparation has gone very well. She takes her training well and it's been straightforward since Leopardstown. We've just kept her ticking over. She's a fit filly.

"It's an above-average Arc and I'm well aware of the strength of the 3-year-olds as well as the Japanese filly (Chrono Genesis) who will be as tough to beat as any."

What would it mean to Weld to win Europe's most prestigious prize? "It would be absolutely wonderful for everybody involved with the horse," he replied.

Harzand, the horse who Weld said gave him his greatest day in racing when landing the 2016 Derby under Pat Smullen, was the legendary trainer's last Arc runner. He finished ninth of 16 behind Found in 2016.

Given she won the Prix de l'Opera on what was officially heavy ground at this fixture last year and has a pair of group 3 wins on yielding to soft ground, the forecast rain shouldn't inconvenience Tarnawa, who seems able to adapt to whatever underfoot conditions greet her.

Christophe Soumillon, the Aga Khan's retained rider in France, takes over from Colin Keane who has

been on board for her last three starts.Soumillon has a 100% record on Tarnawa, having

been on board for both her French wins last autumn in the Prix Vermeille and Prix de l'Opera.

Field Carries Depth of International TalentThis year’s Darley Yorkshire Oaks (G1) winner

Snowfall, runner-up in the Vermeille last month, joins with the battle-hardened Broome to form a two-pronged Ballydoyle attack for Aidan O’Brien. The latter comes off a short head loss in the Tattersalls Gold Cup (G1) at the Curragh. O’Brien was also set to saddle 2020 Investec Oaks (G1) winner Love, but the filly was withdrawn Saturday evening due to a temperature.

MACRAE: Frankie Dettori Without Arc Mount as Temperature Forces O’Brien to Withdraw Love

Also of interest is Chrono Genesis, a four-time grade 1 winner in Japan who seeks the first Arc win for her home country. She must overcome a 98-day absence—no Arc winner in the last 55 years has won off such a prep—but her connections have deliberately chosen not to run in a trial, while Oisin Murphy was delighted with how she felt in an easy piece of work on Wednesday.

Saito said: "She hasn't run since June but that doesn't concern me. In Japan she only runs once every two months so this is largely what she's used to. She needs time to recuperate between races and she's really well at the moment.

"Nor am I too worried about the ground. She will give her best whatever the conditions. I am very honored that in France, Chrono Genesis is considered to be one of the favorites.

"But my job is simply to get the mare to the start at 100%. If we win I will be very happy. I think she is capable of winning but in these kinds of races you need some luck."

Deep Bond has undergone a more conventional preparation, arriving in Chantilly in late August and then turning away the persistent attentions of Broome for an all-the-way win in the Qatar Prix Foy (G2) three weeks ago.

Raabihah Heads French ResistanceIt has been obvious since midsummer that the

French challenge for the 100th running of Europe's biggest race would be down on numbers.

The sidelining of Prix Ganay (G1) winner Mare Australis, the injury induced retirement of In Swoop, and the sale to Australia of Gold Trip almost guaranteed there would be a major hole in the senior ranks.

Raabihah flies the flag for the older generation and in many ways boasts a similar profile to her former stablemate Sottsass, winner of this race 12 months ago.

She too looks to build on an encouraging effort when fifth as a 3-year-old, and her trainer Jean-Claude Rouget has seen extremely positive signs that she is running into form at just the right time.

"Last week she worked really well with (Emirates Poule d'Essai des Pouliches, G1, winner) Coeursamba," said Rouget. "She isn't among the favorites, but she could end up beating the favorites because she is very fresh and well, whereas there will be horses in this field who will have had a very tiring season.

"More rain won't bother her as she ran well on very deep ground in last year's Arc. She was a bit far back,

but was finishing fastest of all."Raabihah has yet to win at group 1 level

and the question remains whether she has the same innate class as Sottsass, although Rouget's comments could not be more encouraging. The fact that Raabihah is the shortest price of the four French-trained runners (best price 28-1) tells its own story.

Sealiway (40-1) leads the trio of 3-year-olds who join Raabihah's attempt to keep the prize on French soil. Two other sophomore colts punched their ticket when finishing first and second in last month's Qatar Prix Niel (G2). Baby Rider (200-1) hit the front with a fair turn of foot in the Niel before being gradually reeled in by Bubble Gift.

AUDARYA TAKES SECOND RUN AT PRIX DE L'OPERABy Lewis Porteous and Tom Collins/Racing Post

With a furlong to run in last year's Prix de l'Opera Longines (G1), Audarya looked set to follow

up her first top-level success in the Darley Prix Jean Romanet (G1) and provide Newmarket trainer James Fanshawe with his second win in this race after Speedy Boarding's 2016 score.

After traveling smoothly, Ioritz Mendizibal produced her towards the far side of the track and she briefly put her head in front. There is no denying she battled all the way to the line on heavy ground, but she went down by just a length when passed close to home by star fillies Tarnawa and Alpine Star. With Tarnawa a leading fancy for the Qatar Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe (G1), Audarya looks well placed to go two places better than last year as she attempts to land a third group 1 success.

Bleak weather forecasts indicate the ground will be even deeper this year, which could prove an issue for last year's third. For all that she went through the mud, Audarya certainly wasn't able to showcase the turn of foot we witnessed on firm ground at Keeneland on her next start, when she won the Maker's Mark Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf (G1T). Wootton Bassett's progeny don't tend to appreciate too much cut, either.

The winner of the Opera will receive a berth in this year's Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf Nov. 6 at Del Mar.

Audarya enters this year's edition of the Opera Oct. 3 on the back of a winless campaign, but was headed only in the final stride by the reopposing Grand Glory in the Romanet at Deauville in August, and the pair are sure to be closely matched once again off identical weights.

"She's in good shape and I think her draw in three is probably better than being stuck on the outside," trainer James Fanshawe said of the 5-year-old mare, who was just three-quarters of a length behind Love in the Prince of Wales's Stakes (G1) at Royal Ascot back in June. "It was very firm ground when she won the Breeders' Cup but she's run well on every type of

ground and that won't be a problem.

"There are 15 runners and you just hope you get a smooth passage but we'll let Ioritz Mendizabal get on with it. She traveled over well and is ready to go."

Runners from Britain or Ireland have won five of the last six runnings of the Opera and Audarya is joined in the field by Thundering Nights, Joan of Arc, and Zeyaadah.

Joan of Arc enjoyed her finest hour when landing the Prix de Diane Longines (G1) at Chantilly in June but was seventh in the Sept. 12 Qatar Prix Vermeille (G1).

"We thought there was a chance she wouldn't get a mile and a half last time, but we had to try it," trainer Aidan O'Brien said of the 3-year-old daughter of Galileo. "We think that was the reason for the disappointing run but she's very comfortable at a mile and a quarter.

"She's uncomplicated, genuine, and won't mind an ease in the ground."

Since the turn of the century, 3-year-olds have won 14 editions of this race.

Andre Fabre, who hasn't won this race since 1997, has a good chance with Vermeille fourth Burgarita. The similarly unexposed Frankel filly Sibila Spain, who finished fourth in the Diane behind Joan of Arc, may be best suited by testing conditions.

SUESA AND GLASS SLIPPERS TO CLASH IN PRIX DE L'ABBAYEBy David Carr and Tom Collins/Racing Post

Favorite backers look away now. Aside from Battaash's 2017 romp as 9-4 market leader, you

have to go back to 2008 (Marchand d'Or) for the last winning jolly in the Prix de l'Abbaye de Longchamp Longines (G1). Couple that with a regular low-draw bias, and market leader Suesa faces a stiff task on trends.

It is fair to say that based on what we have seen so far this season Suesa is the most likely winner of the Oct. 3 test for trainer Francois Rohaut, who seeks a first victory in this prestigious sprint. The return to France after a spin on the Knavesmire, a track which clearly didn't suit her, should be the catalyst to an improved effort.

While she lacks the early speed of her Coolmore Wootton Bassett Nunthorpe (G1) conqueror and reopposing rival Winter Power, the heavy ground should see Suesa in striking distance to deliver a power-packed finish.

Sprinters drawn in the lowest five stalls have dominated the Abbaye at ParisLongchamp in the last decade—Mabs Cross' 2018 victory from gate 13 is the anomaly—and Suesa's rider Olivier Peslier will have his work cut out from stall 12 to get near the favored stands' side rail.

The same can be said for most of the major form players, though, with Glass Slippers (stall 9), Winter Power (8), Berneuil (14), and Romantic Proposal (13) all drawn higher than ideal.

However, Glass Slippers and Winter Power have the gate speed and acceleration to navigate their way across from middle berths. The former will look to make amends for a narrow defeat in this race 12 months ago, and shaped extremely well when she did best of the prominent racers in the Derrinstown Stud Flying Five (G1) last time out.

Berneuil ran out an impressive winner of the Qatar Prix du Petit Couvert (G3) over this course and distance last month, but Christophe Soumillon's mount was drawn far better that day and readily saw

off the reopposing Wild Majesty, Mo Celita, Air de Valse, and Lady In France.

'Forget York' for SuesaWhat a strange year. France appears to have little

hope in the Qatar Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe (G1), which it wins frequently, yet it has the favorite for the Prix de l'Abbaye, which it rarely wins.

There have been only five home-trained winners in the last quarter of a century, yet Wooded won it for Francis Graffard last year and the Francois Rohaut-trained Suesa tops the betting 12 months on.

The market is no surprise to anyone who saw Suesa bolt up in the King George Qatar Stakes (G2) at Goodwood, showing blistering speed and scoring by an emphatic three lengths.

She was a beaten favorite in the Nunthorpe at York on her next start, but Rohaut believes breaking from stall 14 of 14 was an issue that day, and said: "We'll just forget that race as she had a bad draw. She looks great and everything's perfect. She's as well as she was before Goodwood."

Yorkshire Pair Bidding for HistoryGlass Slippers will make history if she can land a

second Prix de l'Abbaye as no horse has won this race, lost it, and then returned to reclaim the crown.

She took this impressively in 2019 and, though narrowly beaten 12 months ago, a mare who always comes to herself at this time of year shaped as though her turn may be near once again when a close third in the Flying Five last month.

Trainer Kevin Ryan's son and assistant Adam said: "She traveled well in Ireland but the pace collapsed and she was left out on her own.

"She's been there and done it. She goes there in good health, and we couldn't be happier with her."

Nunthorpe winner Winter Power bids to emulate Lochsong, who was the last to win that race and the Abbaye in the same season, 28 years ago.

She was 10th in the Flying Five at the Curragh next time, and trainer Tim Easterby said: "I don't know what

happened in Ireland, but she's in great form. The ground doesn't worry me as she won on soft at Newmarket."

The Prix de l'Abbaye will award the winner a berth in the Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint (G1T) Nov. 6 at Del Mar. Glass Slippers won the Turf Sprint last year when the World Championships were held at Keeneland.

SPACE BLUES LEADS BRITISH CHARGE IN PRIX DE LA FORETBy Tom Collins and Sam Hendry/Racing Post

Charlie Appleby is expecting a "war of attrition" as he prepares for a three-year plan with Godolphin's

Space Blues to finally come to fruition in the Oct. 3 Qatar Prix de la Foret (G1) at ParisLongchamp.

The Foret brings up the rear of proceedings on Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe Day and the ground could be severely testing by that point if the expected heavy rainfall arrives in Paris.

Space Blues has established himself as a seven-furlong specialist and has won seven times at the trip, including a valuable contest on Saudi Cup night in February and the Aug. 21 Sky Bet City of York Stakes (G2) last time out.

Appleby said: "This is a race I have been trying to get Space Blues to run in for the last three years, but unfortunately he has met with a setback on each occasion. We have put him in bubble wrap since the City of York Stakes, and he goes into this in great shape. He looked fantastic in his work during the week.

"He loves soft ground but it's the last group race of the day and it could be a war of attrition looking at the forecast. I'm pleased with his draw in stall 10 and William Buick knows him inside out."

The son of Dubawi is unbeaten at this track (1-1), recorded his sole previous top-level success in the LARC Prix Maurice de Gheest (G1) at Deauville last August, and sets the bar high with an official mark of 117.

Appleby has always thought Space Blues was versatile as to the ground, but both of his starts on soft resulted in fourth-placed disappointments, so he has something to prove.

In contrast, Kinross, who beat Space Blues by three quarters of a length in the Unibet Lennox Stakes (G2) in July, relishes autumn ground and has been targeted at this race since his Glorious Goodwood success.

"We've had this race in mind since Goodwood and it seems like we're going to get the ground, which is lucky," said Jamie McCalmont, racing manager for owner Marc Chan. "He's good with gaps between his races, and we took a bit of a shot running him in the Maurice de Gheest. He didn't run badly though, and seven furlongs appears to be his best for now."

Frankie Dettori, who rode 2014 Foret winner Olympic Glory, returns to the plate after partnering the Ralph Beckett-trained sprinter to victory in the Betway John of Gaunt Stakes (G3) in May.

Deep ground will also suit Irish challengers Njord and Thunder Moon, who has had a disappointing season but performed with great credit for a runner-up finish in the July 11 Haras d'Etreham Prix Jean Prat

(G1) and shouldn't be overlooked.Qatar Prix du Pin (G3) winner

Sagamiyra will look to follow in the footsteps of the aforementioned French greats but has about six pounds to find with a peak Space Blues once the sex allowance is taken into consideration.

Speak of the Devil, who finished two places behind Sagamiyra last time after enduring a troubled passage, could be the value option at a double-figure price. She ticks more boxes than most.

FABRE MAY BYPASS PRIX MARCEL BOUSSAC WITH RACLETTEBy Scott Burton/Racing Post

Raclette has been hailed as one of the most exciting fillies in training after impressive displays at

Deauville and Chantilly, both of which came on ground with a give in it.

But a threatened deluge ahead of the Oct. 3 Qatar Prix Marcel Boussac (G1) means Andre Fabre—who

also has Fleur d'Iris and Zellie in the nine-runner line-up—could yet switch the daughter of Frankel to next week's bet365 Fillies' Mile (G1) at Newmarket.

"Raclette has not beaten much so far but in very good style," said Fabre. "She has been more tenderly campaigned than

the other two. I'm a bit worried about the ground and she'll be entered at Newmarket next Friday and so I could take her out at the last moment."

Oisin Murphy takes the ride on stablemate Zellie, who has a 1 1/2 lengths to find on Fleur d'Iris from their meeting in the Prix d'Aumale (G3).

Fabre said: "Zellie and Fleur d'Iris are two good fillies and they both have decent chances. Fleur d'Iris might be the tougher of the two, whereas Zellie's style of racing makes life a bit difficult, though she is very good as well."

Agartha has been a model of consistency during a busy campaign and comes here in fine heart after chasing home Discoveries in the Moyglare Stud Stakes (G1) last month.

"She's been running really well all year," trainer Joseph O"Brien said. "This looks a very good race, but she's in great form and we're looking forward to seeing how she gets on in this. She has form on good ground and a softer surface so she's quite versatile with regard to the going."

Without doubt the best bred filly in the line-up is the John and Thady Gosden-trained Natasha, a Frankel half sister to Almanzor, while Ryan Moore is back onboard Oscula for the first time since she won the Prix Six Perfections Sky Sports Racing (G3) at Deauville.

"(Natasha is) an exceptionally bred filly who has won her last two starts well," said joint-trainer Thady Gosden. "She very much deserves her chance and hopefully there won't be too much rain overnight. She'll handle the ground as it is now but we'll have to find out about that if it gets worse."

Of Oscula, syndicate manager Nick Bradley said: "We had her in the (Prix Jean-Luc Lagardère, G1) and this race until Wednesday. I think the track will suit her, I spoke to George (Boughey) the day after (she ran third in) the (Unibet) Rockfel (G2) and she was bucking and kicking. You can never be 100% but all the signs look good."

Acer Alley went into plenty of notebooks after beating the colts in the Prix la Rochette (G3) over seven furlongs and is likely to be delivered late by Olivier Peslier.

"She's had four weeks since the group 3, which is perfect, and she's a filly I've always thought a lot of," trainer Francis Graffard said of Acer Alley. "It's the right race for her and if the ground gets soft that won't be problem for her. In terms of staying the trip, a lot will depend on how fast they go. She's becoming easier to ride and I don't expect the extra 200 meters to catch her out."

The Boussac will award the winner a berth in the Nov. 5 Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf (G1T) at Del Mar.

ANCIENT ROME UP AGAINST EBRO RIVER IN PRIX JEAN-LUC LAGARDEREBy James Stevens and Graeme Rodway/Racing Post

Andre Fabre has not run many in the Qatar Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere (Grand Criterium, G1) in

recent years, but it is notable when he does because his three runners in the last decade have resulted in two winners and a second.

Fabre had Territories take the runner-up spot in 2014 and has since been successful with Ultra, who landed it in 2015, and Emirates Poule d'Essai des Poulains (G1) winner Victor Ludorum in 2019.

All three were owned by Godolphin, but Fabre's representative in the Oct. 3 race at ParisLongchamp this year, Ancient Rome, carries the colors of Michael Tabor and most of his siblings were trained by Aidan O'Brien.

It has been 16 years since the Coolmore partners teamed up with Fabre for Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe Lucien Barriere (G1) success with Hurricane Run and he wasn't a precocious juvenile. Could Ancient Rome be their next star?

"He would be better over an extra furlong but this gives him a chance to prep for either Saint-Cloud (the Criterium International, G1) or the Breeders' Cup. He's in very good form," Fabre said.

The Lagardere will award the winner a berth in the Nov. 5 Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf (G1T) at Del Mar.

Ebro River definitely falls into the precocious juvenile category and the son of Galileo Gold confirmed that when landing the Keeneland Phoenix Stakes (G1) at the Curragh in August.

He was only one pound below that form, judged on Racing Post Ratings, when third in the Goffs Vincent O'Brien National Stakes (G1) over this seven-furlong trip at the Curragh last time and that suggests he probably stayed the trip. However, he set the pace that day and lost places late, shaping as if he wasn't strong over it.

It may be that he is more effective over sprint distances, but we should find out for sure here.

Stone Age will definitely stay and the three-race maiden drops to seven furlongs for the first time in his career. All his runs so far have come over a mile or further, but he doesn't lack speed.

He is trainer O'Brien's only runner in the race and the Irishman is only 1-11 in the last 10 seasons. However, Gleneagles would have made it two but for being disqualified in 2014.

Ebro River Primed to End Palmer's DroughtHugo Palmer is battling with a dreaded bout of

seconditis, but what better place to end that spell than in a group 1 race worth €400,000.

The Newmarket trainer fields Ebro River, the likely favorite as the only one of the nine runners to have won at group 1 level. He outbattled Dr Zempf to win the Phoenix Stakes at the Curragh before returning to the track with a fine four-length third with only the two market leaders for next year's QIPCO Two Thousand Guineas (G1), Native Trail and Point Lonsdale, in front of him.

Palmer, who has endured five seconds and a third since his last success 19 days ago, trained subsequent Guineas hero Galileo Gold to finish third in this race in 2015. Now his star son Ebro River has a fine opportunity.

"We're looking forward to it, he's got a nice draw and seven furlongs at the Curragh is very different to seven furlongs at Longchamp," the trainer said.

"He was absolutely fine on soft ground earlier in the year, all we know is he doesn't want it very firm. We'll try and go two better than his dad."

He added: "We haven't had too many runners of late and sometimes you go through these frustrating periods, but the horse is in great form, so we're very happy."

UNBEATEN ECHO ZULU TACKLES A MILE IN FRIZETTEBy Bob Ehaltt @BobEhalt

The arrival of fall brings with it a change in the scope of 2-year-old racing.

For the quickest and most talented members of the juvenile divisions, the challenge shifts from sprinting to handling longer races and navigating a two-turn distance.

In just two races, Winchell Thoroughbreds and L and N Racing's 2-year-old filly Echo Zulu has surely displayed an abundance of speed and a bright future, which will be put to a tougher test Oct. 3.

Though her first trip around two turns will have to wait until the Nov. 5 Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies (G1) at Del Mar, the grade 1-winning Echo Zulu will stretch out to a mile distance Sunday while facing eight rivals in the $400,000 Frizette Stakes (G1) at Belmont Park.

A daughter of red-hot freshman sire Gun Runner trained by Steve Asmussen, Echo Zulu will be asked to travel an extra furlong Sunday. Based on the way she set the pace and then pulled away in the stretch to win the

seven-furlong Sept. 5 Spinaway Stakes (G1) at Saratoga Race Course by four lengths in a fast 1:22.51 on a good track, that may not be a major issue in Sunday's Breeders' Cup Challenge "Win and You're In" stakes that will award a fees-paid spot in the Juvenile Fillies.

"She's very fast and we'll see how far she can carry that speed," said David Fiske, racing manager for Winchell Thoroughbreds. "All of them have limitations somewhere, but our expectations are that the Gun Runners will get better as they go farther, and I hope we are right about that. We're hoping she turns out to be something special. There's always hope."

Gun Runner certainly has the pedigree to produce winners at two turns given that he won the 1 1/4-mile Longines Breeders' Cup Classic (G1) in his career and compiled career earnings of $15.9 million while being named 2017 Horse of the Year. The early returns from his first crop have been dazzling with 13 winners, four graded stakes winners—two of them at the grade 1 level—and earnings of $1,494,931.

"It's a little surprising. I don't think anyone expected results like that at this point," Fiske said.

As for why Asmussen opted to keep Echo Zulu in New York for a one-turn test instead of shipping to Kentucky for the two turns of the Oct. 8 Darley Alcibiades Stakes (G1) at Keeneland, Fiske said timing played a key role.

"There were some timing considerations. Obviously the goal is to get her to the Breeders' Cup and I think Steve wanted to give her a little more time between races," Fiske said.

Bred by the conglomerate of Betz/J. Betz/Burns/CHNNHK/Magers/CoCo Equine/Ramsby, the daughter of the Menifee mare Letgomyecho was bought for $300,000 by Winchell Thoroughbreds from the Betz Thoroughbreds consignment at the 2020 Keeneland September Yearling Sale.

Also among the field of nine is Magic Cap Stables' Frosty Brew, a Sept. 9 debut winner at Laurel Park. Trainer Shug McGaughey had hoped Echo Zulu would run in the Alcibiades and there would be a smaller field for the Frizette, but he's hopeful that she can take a step forward on a major stage.

"I thought her first race was pretty good," McGaughey said, "and when I made up my mind to run I was thinking Steve's horse was going to go to Keeneland and it would come up a short field here, but she worked well for this race and we'll get her up here and see how it goes."

Though he's rooting for Frosty Brew to win the Frizette, McGaughey has a bit of a vested interest in seeing Echo Zulu turn in a big effort since in time he will be training her half sister for another owner, Joe Allen. Northshore Bloodstock, agent, bought the American Pharaoh-Letgomyecho filly named Doing Justice for $1.4 million on behalf of Allen from the Betz Thoroughbreds consignment at the recent Keeneland September Yearling Sale.

"If I can't win it, since I have the half sister, I wouldn't mind seeing Echo Zulu win," McGaughey said.

Born in 2002, Letgomyecho has produced nine winners from 13 foals, including grade 3 winner J Boys Echo (Mineshaft) and grade 3-placed Unbridled Outlaw (Unbridled's Song).

Trainer Todd Pletcher has entered a pair of fillies in The Elkstone Group's Jester Calls Nojoy and MyRacehorse Stable and Spendthrift Farm's maiden, A Mo Reay.

Jester Calls Nojoy, a Maclean's Music filly named after a character in the movie "Top Gun," ran like a jet was attached to her saddle in her second maiden start to win by 10 lengths on the Spinaway card. Her time was :1.02 slower than Echo Zulu with seven furlongs completed in 1:23.53.

"The surprise is that she didn't win her debut," said Pletcher when asked if the lopsided win caught him off-guard, "because she trained so well. In her first start, she ran against a filly with a few starts under her belt and she got a little tired in the last part (finishing second) but she did what we thought she would do in her second start and we hope she can stretch out."

A Mo Reay, a daughter of Uncle Mo, was third in her Aug. 29 debut at Saratoga, rallying from 11 lengths back to finish a half-length behind at six furlongs to Klaravich Stables' Frizette starter Gerrymander.

"I thought she ran a winning-type race in her debut," Pletcher said. "She just didn't get quite there and we believe the mile will suit her." BH

ANNAPOLIS MAY OUTRANK OPPOSITION IN PILGRIMBy BloodHorse Staff

Though the Oct. 3 $200,000 Pilgrim Stakes (G2T) at Belmont Park is not an official Breeders'

Cup Challenge series qualifier, its impact as an instrumental prep is unmistakable. Three of its last five winners have captured the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf (G1T): Oscar Performance (2016), Structor (2019), and Fire At Will (2020).

This year's field is headed by the regally bred Annapolis, who passed his maiden test with aplomb and now steps into stakes company for Hall of Fame trainer Todd Pletcher. Sunday's Pilgrim is at 1 1/16 miles over the inner turf.

Owned and bred by Bass Stables, Annapolis was a stylish winner on debut going 1 1/16 miles over the Saratoga Race Course inner turf Sept. 4. The bay son of prolific sire War Front and second offspring out of graded stakes winner My Miss Sophia was eighth early before picking up his pace and drawing away to a 4 1/2-length win.

"He trained like he was going to run well in his debut, but it's hard sometimes to win going a mile and a sixteenth first out," Pletcher said. "He did everything right, settled in well, put in a good run, and kicked on. He moved up on a nice field of horses and I couldn't have asked for more on debut."

Irad Ortiz Jr. will return to the irons from post 3.

Pletcher also entered Repole Stable's Midnight Worker (Outwork), who makes his turf debut under Luis Saez following a stakes placing.

Chad Brown will seek his fourth Pilgrim triumph when saddling Portfolio Company, who seeks to build on a runner-up effort in the With Anticipation Stakes (G3T) last out at Saratoga.

Owned by Seth Klarman's Klaravich Stables, Portfolio Company was a debut winner July 17 there before growing rank in the With Anticipation.

Brown said the Kitten's Joy colt has been training with a new bit in advance of the Pilgrim.

"We've been working with the horse," Brown said. "After that debut, he got a little keen with us and Irad had some trouble with him in that race, especially after he didn't break that well and he was trying to catch up. It just was a big mess. We're doing our best to get him to settle and changed some equipment on him. The horse seems to be doing pretty well."

Joel Rosario will pick up the mount on the inside-drawn runner.

Limited Liability, another Kitten's Joy colt who ran third in the With Anticipation, will attempt to give owner Stuart Janney III and Hall of Fame trainer Shug McGaughey their second collaborative Pilgrim victory after teaming up with Air Support in 2010.

Completing the six-horse field are Doctor Jeff and the maiden City At Night.

Brown Chases Fifth Waya WinAnother graded turf stakes on the Sunday card at

Belmont is the $300,000 Fasig-Tipton Waya Stakes (G3T), a 1 3/8-mile inner turf test for fillies and mares.

Brown goes for his fifth career Waya win and third straight in the marathon turf race. Peter Brant's My Sister Nat, who won the Waya last year for the trainer when it was contested at Saratoga, returns, and Brown also starts Orglandes for owners Michael Dubb, Madaket Stables, Wonder Stables, and Michael Caruso.

Christophe Clement will saddle a pair of formidable contenders in R Unicorn Stable's Call Me Love and Moyglare Stud Farm's Beautiful Lover.

Repole Stable homebred Always Shopping also figures to contend for Pletcher.

The remaining two entrants are Lovely Lucky and Sister Otoole. BH
