CHARLATAN'S ARKANSAS DERBY TEST RESULTS UNDER REVIEWBy Bob Ehalt and Byron King

Charlatan, a winner of the first of two divisions of the May 2

Arkansas Derby (G1) at Oaklawn Park, did not pass initial post-race testing and is having a split sam-ple reviewed, an individual with knowledge of the situation told BloodHorse May 26.

Bernie Hettel, state steward at Oaklawn, confirmed Tuesday that two horses that raced May 2 did not clear testing but, citing confidentiality, said he was unable to currently provide horse names or their connections. Horsemen have the right to call for split sample testing to see whether or not it confirms the initial sample test. Stewards and

regulators make no decisions before receiving the results of the split sample testing.

Based on an unnamed source, the Louisville Courier-Journal reported Tuesday that two failed tests were from horses trained by Bob Baffert, including one of his top 3-year-olds. Baffert conditions Charlatan, and also won the second division of the Arkansas Derby with Nadal. He took an allowance race that day with Gamine as well. Those were the only three horses he raced at Oaklawn May 2.

Baffert issued a statement midafternoon Tuesday, which was acquired by BloodHorse.

"The rules of the Arkansas Racing Commission mandate confidentiality concerning any investigation into an alleged rule violation until there is a written decision by the stewards," the

Hall of Fame trainer stated. "I am extremely disappointed that, in this instance, the Commission has not followed its own rules for confidentiality. I am hoping for an expedited investigation and look forward to being able to speak soon about any written decision of the stewards, if and when it becomes necessary and I'm allowed to under the Commission's confidentiality rules."

Charlatan earned $300,000 for his victory in a division of the Arkansas Derby, in which he defeated Basin by six lengths. The son of Speightstown is perfect in three starts and considered one of the favorites for the Kentucky Derby Presented by Woodford Reserve (G1). He races for the partnership of SF Racing, Madaket Stables, Starlight Racing, Stonestreet Stables, Fred Hertrich III, John Fielding, and Golconda Stables.

A split sample is typically requested when a horse tests positive for a prohibited substance, usually on findings that could result in a disqualification and/or loss of purse, or cause a suspension or fine for a trainer. The split sample provides the affected party due process and a means to potentially dispute findings if it is inconsistent with the initial lab findings.

A two-time Triple Crown winner, first with American Pharoah in 2015 and then with Justify in 2018, Baffert came

under scrutiny last September when it was revealed in the New York Times that Justify was found to have a prohibited level of scopolamine in his system after he won the 2018 Santa Anita Derby (G1) at Santa Anita Park in April 2018. No action was taken against the trainer or toward the purse, with the California Horse Racing Board never calling a positive because it attributed the lab's finding for scopolamine as environmental contamination tied to jimsonweed based on the expertise of its equine medical director Dr. Rick Arthur.

The scopolamine results were not confirmed by the CHRB until the New York Times article, more than 17 months after the Santa Anita Derby.

Hettel said a split-sample test can be returned as soon as five days, though COVID-19 conditions across the country have closed some state laboratories and could slow the process. If the new laboratory split sample disputes the findings of the first, there is rarely any means for the case to go forward. Confirmation, on the other hand, leads to stewards investigating the matter.

"Then we'd have a hearing, testimony, get lab reports, veterinary reports, people-involved reports, take testimony, and the stewards contemplate it and issue a ruling. That's a long way off," Hettel said.

If Charlatan is ultimately disqualified, it could have implications that go beyond the purse of the race, which would need to be redistributed. Winning a grade 1 is of importance for a colt's stud career, and qualifying points toward the Kentucky Derby are awarded to the official winners.

Earlier this month shortly after the two divisions of the Arkansas Derby, Hill 'n' Dale Farms secured the breeding rights to Charlatan.

A points system is used by Churchill Downs to determine preference when more than the capacity field size of 20 horses are entered in the Derby,

a common occurrence. The Derby this year is Sept. 5. Nadal and Charlatan are first and fourth, respectively, on the Kentucky Derby leaderboard with 150 and 100 points, having earned 100 points apiece in their Arkansas Derby divisions. Both horses are tentatively scheduled to run in the June 20 Belmont Stakes (G1) at Belmont Park.

Purse earnings used to determine the field for the June 20 Belmont Stakes (G1) also could be impacted. If a disqualification were to occur, that decision could be appealed.

According to the condition book, if the Belmont field is oversubscribed the field will be determined by giving the first eight starters preference based on highest earnings in graded stakes at one mile or longer. The next five would be based on accumulation of highest lifetime earnings in all non-restricted stakes. The remaining three starters in the field limited to 16 would be selected by the Belmont Stakes Selection Committee.

At this early juncture there are nine probable starters for the 1 1/8-mile Belmont Stakes, according to the New York Racing Association press office. BH

EFFORTS TO IMPROVE SAFETY OF TURF SURFACES CONTINUEBy Frank Angstt @BH_FAngst

As grass racing continues to grow in popularity in North America, track superintendents and indus-

try experts working to improve the safety and perfor-mance of racing surfaces are increasing their focus on turf courses.

Those efforts were outlined in a May 26 webinar, part of a series of discussions presented by Grayson-Jockey Club Research Foundation serving as a substitute for the 2020 Welfare and Safety of the Racehorse Summit, which was canceled because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

In Tuesday's webinar, hosted by Mick Peterson, executive director of the Racing Surfaces Testing Laboratory and a professor at the University of Kentucky, improving the safety and performance of turf surfaces was discussed as a new point of emphasis.

While the Jockey Club's Equine Injury Database has tracked a downward trend in catastrophic injuries in racing over the past 10 years, reaching a record low 1.53 per 1,000 starts (99.85% of starts are without incident) last year, the EID rate for turf surfaces saw a

30% increase in risk from 2018 to 2019 to 1.56 per 1,000 starts.

Even with that relatively poor year in 2019, turf racing risk has been reduced 20% since 2009 but Peterson and track superintendents want to reverse last year's trend.

"Turf is an important surface for us," Peterson said. "It's growing in popularity in North America.

We don't hear any complaints about the biomechanics of turf surfaces. You can hear that a turf is too soft or too hard but we know how to deal with that. We can aerate and water.

"As turf racing grows as a percentage of total starts, we need to understand the appeal of turf and see if we can even get better."

In a video presentation that was part of Tuesday's webinar, The Thoroughbred Center general manager Jim Pendergest, who in September 2019 was named director of racing surfaces for Keeneland, said track superintendents are focused on improving the safety of racing on the grass. He talked about recent work of an NTRA committee of prominent track superintendents.

BLOODHORSE DAILY PAGE 9 OF 22WEDNESDAY, MAY 27, 2020

"We've added a lot of information, a lot more requirements, and a lot more data to be recorded for turf tracks," Pendergest said. "With turf racing becoming so much more prominent, that's important. Trainers want more turf racing; they have more turf horses. I think the turf courses have become so much more important that we need more focus on them."

Peterson said that periodic turf surface testing has been enhanced, and efforts are being made to improve information on the top material used to replace damaged sod, documentation of watering and aeration, and existing and new surface testing methods.

Beyond those strides, Peterson said there is a lot of emphasis on keeping the turf in good shape by using different lanes to spread out the traffic. He said a better sod mix is being use to repair divots. There also is study looking at areas of heavy usage, typical of areas where the gate is placed.

Peterson later noted that an item that sounds as simple as filling in a divot with dirt and sod can be worthy of study.

"A key is that the divot mix should match the surrounding material to the extent possible," Peterson said. "That's a challenge right now. There has been some very clever work at Santa Anita Park and some other tracks on developing divot mix but we need to look at that. It can't just be loose sand that blows out

when a horse hits the same area."In a sport where equine deaths in racing already

are extremely rare, people are working hard to improve even those numbers. Peterson said discussion of seemingly small details like sod repair and gate placement can make a difference.

"Part of this is learning best practices between the tracks because if you look at some tracks, you'll see the damage to the surface in the area of the gate is minimal. Part of that is processes, part is design and equipment, part is using boards to go out on the turf," Peterson said. "We're going to document that. We have to learn from each other."

The presentation Tuesday documented significant areas in which the sport has moved forward when it comes to surface issues. Peterson noted that as more data collection becomes automated—through technology like sensors on trucks and tills that measure moisture content—better and additional real-time information will become available that he believes will help superintendents further improve the performance and safety of surfaces.

"If you had asked me 10 or 15 years ago, horse racing was well behind other sports," Peterson said of racing's data and understanding of its various playing surfaces. "Right now, I think that we have some of the best protocols and standards of any industry—and the data. That data we're acquiring for horse racing, I would put up against any sport." BH

SHANG DQ'D FROM 2019 IOWA DERBY SECOND, ASMUSSEN FINEDBy Christine Osert @BH_COser

Shang has been disqualified from his runner-up finish in the 2019 Iowa Derby at Prairie Meadows

after testing positive for the beta-blocker Atenolol, according to a stewards' ruling posted May 26 by the Association of Racing Commissioners International. Trainer Steve Asmussen has been fined the maximum penalty of $1,000 for the drug positive.

Atenolol is typically used to treat high blood pressure or prevent angina and improve survival after a heart attack, according to the National Library of Medicine. It relaxes blood vessels and slows the heart rate to improve blood flow and decrease blood pressure. The ARCI classifies Atenolol as a Class 3, Penalty B drug.

A report from the Industrial Laboratories Company, Inc. in Wheat Ridge, Colo., stated that 1.99 ng/ml of Atenolol were found in a urine sample taken from Shang after the July 5, 2019 Iowa Derby.

Asmussen, who trains the colt for Bill and Corinne Heiligbrodt, chose to send his split sample to a referee laboratory. The University of California Davis confirmed the split sample and showed Atenolol in urine at 1.2 ng/ml and in serum at 12 pg/ml. A DNA test was received Dec. 17 and on Jan. 22, UC Davis confirmed the sample containing Atenolol belonged to Shang.

The ruling notes there is no acceptable level for Atenolol in any sample, as there is no screening limit.

Prairie Meadows stewards did not suspend Asmussen, citing mitigating factors that the amount of Atenolol found in Shang was extremely low and that there was substantial persuasive evidence provided showing Atenolol can be an environmental substance.

"The board feels the contamination most likely came from a person closely associated with the horse, and not from the local water," the ruling read. "Mr. Asmussen feels prohibiting persons who are caring for his horses from urinating in stalls is 'a practice that is impossible to stop.'"

The ruling added: "Although it is likely that the horse carried the drug in his system due to an

inadvertent exposure, he nonetheless carried the drug in his system which necessitates the disqualification to ensure the integrity of racing, and to instill confidence in the betting public."

It also noted Asmussen is the absolute insurer of the horse entered and responsible for the horse's condition.

Asmussen and his assistant Darren Fleming attended a May 15 hearing via teleconference. Through legal counsel, Clark Brewster, Asmussen provided evidence as to the potential cause of the positive, but did not dispute

the test result, according to the posted ruling. The ruling also cited aggravating factors that led to

the maximum administrative penalty of $1,000, such as Asmussen's "extensive medication violation history" and "the fact that although much of the evidence provided purported to show Atenolol to be in the local water, there was not a single additional positive test for Atenolol the entire year."

The recommended penalty for Atenolol is a 15-day suspension absent mitigating circumstances, up to a 60-day suspension if there are aggravating factors. The administrative penalty is a minimum fine of $500 absent mitigating circumstances, and a maximum of $1,000 if there are aggravating factors.

In addition to Shang being disqualified from his Iowa Derby runner-up finish (he crossed the wire third and was moved up after Winning Number was demoted from first to third for interference), his earned purse money of $49,700 from the race is forfeited. He was also placed on the veterinarian's list and must pass a commission-approved vet exam before he is eligible to run.

Shang did not run again in 2019 following the Iowa Derby, but has run four times this year. He returned Jan. 10 to win an allowance race at Fair Grounds Race Course & Slots and finished second in the Feb. 29

Dixie Poker Ace Stakes, also at Fair Grounds. He was second last out in an April 19 allowance at Oaklawn Park. BH

SILVER SPRINGS TRAINING CENTER REVIVES BWAMAZON LEGACYBy Eric Mitchellt @BH_EMitchell

History is on the side of the new Silver Springs Training Center off Paris Pike, which has re-

stored the six-furlong training track built by re-nowned breed-to-race operation Bwamazon Farm.

"When I first came to Kentucky, whether you were at Churchill or Keeneland, people would tell you to never bet against a Bwamazon 2-year-old," said Steve Johnson, who owns the training center with his son Erik, farm trainer Kevin Noltemeyer, and bloodstock agent Matt Bowling. "The track is a really good mixture of sand, silt, and clay. We were thrilled to get the opportunity."

The partners lease the 280-acre training center property from B. Wayne Hughes' Spendthrift Farm, which has owned the land since 2015. More detail about how Silver Springs Training Center was developed can be found in the May 23 issue of BloodHorse magazine.

A key to Bwamazon's success, according to Johnson, was its training track. Bwamazon was founded in the 1970s by St. Louis real estate executive Millard Waldheim and later bought by Elmer Whitaker after Waldheim died in 1983. When Waldheim built the training track, he trucked in the same material used for the main track surfaces at Churchill Downs and Keeneland at the time.

Under Waldheim's ownership, Bwamazon became the second owner to

earn a gold pitcher through Keeneland's Milestone Trophy program. A gold pitcher is awarded for having 16 graded stakes winners at the track. Bwamazon made its presence felt at Churchill Downs, as well, earning a place as the eighth-leading owner with 63 total winners among owners who raced at Keeneland and Churchill Downs during 1980-88.

Bwamazon's 2-year-olds were especially tough to beat.

Between 1980 and 1985, Bwamazon was the leading owner by number of 2-year-old winners for four years at Keeneland and still ranks among the top 10 owners by total juvenile winners at Keeneland during 1980-2019 with 22. In 1980 and 1982, among all the owners of 2-year-old starters at Churchill and Keeneland, Bwamazon had the highest combined total of juvenile winners for the year. Bwamazon's top homebreds during this time included 1980 Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes (G3) winner Television Studio and Highland Park, who won the Kentucky Jockey Club, Iroquois Stakes, and Breeders' Futurity (G2) in 1982.

Whitaker shut down Bwamazon and dispersed his stock in 1988. As soon as the last horse came off the track, the surface was leveled and seeded with millet so the roots would prevent the material

from shifting due to erosion. Silver Springs began restoring the training track last year and now has the oval fully refurbished.

"They did a good job protecting it," said Noltemeyer, who runs the training center for the partnership that is also involved in a mare/foal and sales prep operation named Silver Springs Stud, which Steve Johnson started on two other pieces of property near Paris, Ky. "The track has a lot of cushion. When a horse gallops by, you can hardly hear it." BH

AGENT McGREEVY JOINS BREEZE EASYBy Ron Mitchellt @BH_RMitchell

Leading bloodstock agent Tom McGreevy has joined Breeze Easy—a partnership owned by Mike Hall

and Sam Ross—to select horses on an exclusive basis, beginning with the June 9-12 Ocala Breeders' Sales Spring 2-Year-Olds in Training Sale.

"We are delighted that Tom will be working with Breeze Easy as we continue to develop our racing and breeding operation," said Breeze Easy managing partner Mike Hall.

Breeze Easy racing manager Mike Mollica added that, "Tom's track record and reputation go before him, and we are extremely fortunate that the opportunity for him to join our team presented itself."

Among the horses selected by McGreevy, many during a lengthy tenure with Rick Porter's Fox Hill Farm, have been Horse of the Year Havre de Grace; Songbird, an Eclipse Award winner at ages 2 and 3; champion sprinter Midnight Lute; Las Vegas Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile (G1) victor Battle of Midway; Round Pond, who took the Emirates Airline Breeders' Cup Distaff (G1); and more than a dozen other graded stakes winners including American Anthem, Old Fashioned, Rockport Harbor, Winslow Homer, and King Jack.

"I am excited to work with Mike and Sam and also thankful for the opportunity," McGreevy said. "Our goal is to get to the big races on Saturday afternoon."

Breeze Easy made its entry into the industry in 2016 and among the horses it has campaigned are 2019 Breeders Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint (G2T) winner Four Wheel Drive; multiple graded winning and grade 1-placed Late Night Pow Wow; graded winner Imprimis, and stakes scorers Devine Mischief, Karak, Pretty Lady, and Curlin's Honor (in partnership with John Oxley). OSARUS PREPARES FOR ONLINE BREEZE-UP SALEBy Scott Burton/Racing Post

This has been a spring like no other for pinhook-ers and breeze-up consignors with the arrival of a

global pandemic laying waste to the usual calendar of sales.

Nor has there been much in the way of racing, which provides both those timely pedigree updates and the incentive for owners to invest.

Different sales companies have taken alternative approaches when it comes to trying to save the concept of ready-to-run, even as doubts have continued to surround where anyone will be able to run.

The sale staged by Osarus, whose majority shareholder is Tattersalls, traditionally falls fairly early in the European calendar and its April 8 and 9 dates never had much chance of surviving the onset of the COVID-19 shutdown.

But while delay was inevitable, Emmanuel Viaud and his team have used the extra time to implement an approach which has long been talked of but whose time may just have come.

With French consignors desperate to save the sale and ready to send their stock to a variety of different locations in order to breeze for the cameras, Osarus will on May 27 stage its sale online, a first for a breeze-up catalog and hot on the heels of digital auctions for yearlings and breeding stock hosted by Australian houses Inglis and Magic Millions.

"It's exciting and we know there will be a lot of people watching how it goes, so we know there is no margin for error," said Viaud, managing

director of Osarus and chief auctioneer."The advantage is that we have 70 horses to sell,

which is obviously easier than a sale of, say, 250 lots. That will enable us to refine the concept and should be extremely helpful when looking to stage more business online in the future.

"I think it's a perfect number and really the choice was to do it this way or to cancel the sale as has been done elsewhere, such as Baden-Baden."

Those tuning in to either the Osarus site or France Sire—who also filmed the breezes at a variety of locations around the country—will see Viaud conducting a sequential auction with each lot offered separately.

He said: "We had already spent quite a lot of time working on the online concept over the winter and we have been thinking of digital sales for two or three years now, though of course nobody could have foreseen the arrival of the virus.

"That head start we gained over the winter has been an advantage, though we have tweaked a few things and I'm sure we will have two or three more ideas to take away after tomorrow.

"But it's exciting and, while we may not have 30 Siyounis on offer, I'm confident in the offer, while this is really the sole French Breeze-Up of the year because the Deauville catalog has been moved to Ireland."

Joining the French-based horses in the catalog are three offered by John Bourke's Hyde Park Stud in Westmeath.

While the circumstances of the coronavirus outbreak means many of the French vendors were more than willing to embrace the concept, Viaud has worked hard to convince those with money to spend on the other side of the equation.

"We have put as much information, video, and veterinary details as possible on each page of he online catalog because transparency is paramount," said Viaud.

"To begin with many buyers said to me they would not be comfortable bidding without having seen a horse in the flesh but many have been able to go to individual farms to do their inspections.

"Even as we speak, there are agents and trainers looking at horses in the sale. Just because the sale is online that doesn't mean you can't see the horses for yourself."

The rate of business is traditionally a little more leisurely in a French ring than in other parts of the bloodstock world, a trend Viaud expects to be exaggerated by the arrival of bids online from more than 70 buyers who have registered through the Osarus website.

"It will be a slower process than normal and I will be careful that the hammer is not dropped too quickly. We will need to be sure that the last bid has been struck online.

"We will take our time—there won't be an egg-timer in front of me—but I don't want things to get too slow. I could imagine a rhythm where each lot might take a couple of minutes longer than usual but no more, otherwise it will become too long a process.

"We are very satisfied that by Monday evening we had 70 registered bidders—owners, trainers, and agents from France, Britain, and Ireland as well as Spain, Belgium, and the Czech Republic.

"There is a wide buying bench, just as you would want and I think that gives us a chance of achieving the best possible results for the vendors."

Selling begins at 12:30 p.m. BST or 1:30 p.m. in France, and interested bidders must register with the Osarus accounts department by email [email protected].

NEWCASTLE RECEIVES 369 ENTRIES FOR OPENING DAYBy Brian Sheerin and Bill Barber/Racing Post

Connections have greeted the planned return of British racing at Newcastle with

huge enthusiasm as a mammoth entry of 369 horses was received May 25 for the June 1 fixture.

The eight-race card, which could be extended to 10 races with divisions, has attracted powerful entries from the major yards in the north, with trainer Richard Fahey making 33 entries.

The behind-closed-doors meeting will be the first to take place in Britain since March 17 after which the sport was closed down due to the COVID-19 crisis.

Fahey, leading trainer at the track for the last five seasons, spoke of the boost it would give to get racing back on again.

"It's good for the team, good for everyone's morale that racing is not far away," he said. "All we are trying

to do is get back to work and I'm delighted that it looks like we are getting there. The prep is done at home and the racetrack is where we finish the job.

"It's very important that we get back racing and, if this had dragged out any longer than it already has,

it would have been catastrophic for the industry. It would have put many people in a position where they would never recover.

"I know it has been a horrendous situation for everyone but it's time we got back to work adhering to the right protocols so let's hope we get there."

Fahey said his stable would continue to be well represented as the number of meetings increased next week.

He added: "The owners have been great during all of this and let's hope we can get back racing on June 1 and things will remain that way.

"The BHA has been put in an impossible position trying to keep us all happy in terms of the program, but we have no preference with what horses we run, the main objective is to get everything out and find races

for them. You always like running your 2-year-olds, and we have plenty of those to run, which is a positive, but we've got to do what's best for all our horses.

"There are two meetings the following day and we'll be well represented there as well. The maximum that can run is 120, though, so it's not like everything will get a run. If we get two or three meetings on a day we won't be long about catching up."

There are also entries at Newcastle from champion trainer John Gosden, Sir Michael Stoute, Roger Varian, Marco Botti, Michael Bell, Hugo Palmer, Charlie Hills, and Simon and Ed Crisford.

Silvestre de Sousa, Andrea Atzeni, Jim Crowley, Danny Tudhope, and Luke Morris are among the jockeys who could be in action.

The British Horseracing Authority has said all races following the resumption will require final fields to be declared three days before meetings take place "until further notice," which means the final fields for Newcastle will be published on Friday.

Clerk of the course James Armstrong said the number of entries matched expectations and that they would be busy on Monday. The entry is around twice as large as would be expected for a meeting at Newcastle at this time of year.

"There's plenty of support from all over," he said."Given that we're not able to take overnighters

that doesn't look to have hindered many people. The maiden and the novice have 60-plus entries so I'd say it's looking extremely likely they'll divide and we'll have a declaration of 120 runners and ten races. We'll be very busy.

"We're putting in new procedures and all the protocols that the BHA have given us are being adhered to. Like anything on day one there will probably be the odd teething problem, but the key thing is trying to get races off on time with the new system. It will take a little bit of getting used to and we'll try and iron out any creases on day two.

"We're champing at the bit and it will just be nice to get up and running."

MAXFIELD ANOTHER GRADE 1 WINNER ON STREET SENSE RESUMEBy Alan Portert @pedigreeconsult

The 2006 Bessemer Trust Breeders' Cup Juvenile (G1) witnessed a remarkable run from Street

Sense, who, after having trailed by nearly a dozen lengths in the early stages, charged through to win by 10. Six months later after passing the opening half-mile in nineteenth position in a 20-horse field, he skimmed the rail under a patented ride from Calvin Borel and prevailed by 2 1/4 lengths under the Twin Spires to become the first horse to complete the Breeders' Cup Juvenile/Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (G1) double.

Last fall, Street Sense was represented by a colt that many felt could replicate that historic feat. Successful over mile at Churchill Downs on his debut, his son Maxfield followed up with a dominant display in the Claiborne Breeders' Futurity (G1), powering home by 5 1/2 lengths. Following that performance, Maxfield would have been the probable favorite for the Breeders' Cup Juvenile had he not been withdrawn three days out from the race due to ankle chips that required surgery for their removal. It appeared likely that the time needed for Maxfield to recuperate and return to fitness would also sideline him from the Kentucky Derby. But the intervention of the COVID-19 pandemic, and a Kentucky Derby rescheduled for Sept. 5, have dramatically reshaped the landscape. On May 23 Maxfield re-entered the classic picture, overcoming a near eight-month layoff to earn 50 qualifying points on the Road to the Kentucky Derby with a professional victory in the Matt Winn Stakes (G3).

Oddly enough, Maxfield is only the second grade 1-winning colt to emerge from the first nine Northern Hemisphere-sired crops by Street Sense. In a near-parallel, the previous one, McKinzie, was already a grade 1 winner at 2, and a major hope for the

Derby after his first two outings at 3. He was sidelined from the classics by injury, although he returned to take the Pennsylvania Derby (G1) and Malibu Stakes (G1) at the end of the season, adding the Alysheba Stakes Presented by Sentient Jet (G2) and Whitney Stakes (G1) last year at 4. Overall, Street Sense has been represented by 56 Northern Hemisphere-sired stakes winners, 24 graded, McKinzie and Maxfield being preceded as grade 1 winners by the fillies Aubby K, Wedding Toast, Sweet Reason, Callback, and Street Fancy. Street Sense has also sired five Southern

Hemisphere crops in Australia, which have yielded 11 stakes winners, seven group, including group 1 winners Hallowed Crown, Dixie Blossoms, Sense Of Occasion, and Politeness.

Although Street Sense was at his best on the two biggest days of his career, a remarkable number of horses in Maxfield's pedigree were—as Maxfield appeared to be—sidelined when they might have had a serious shot at Derby glory. Street Sense's sire, Street Cry, missed the race with an ankle injury, but returned at 4 to take the Dubai World Cup (G1) and Stephen Foster Handicap (G1). Maxfield's broodmare sire, Bernardini, who did win the Withers Stakes (G3), Preakness Stakes (G1), Jim Dandy Stakes (G2), and Travers Stakes (G1) at 3, might well have made the Derby had not a lung infection sidelined him for two months early in the year. A.P. Indy, the sire of Bernardini, was scratched on the morning of the race, due to a bone bruise. And A.P. Indy's second dam, Lassie Dear, is by Buckpasser, who was by far and away the best of his crop, but missed the classics due to a quarter crack.

The theme continues in Maxfield's female family, as his dam Velvety, by Bernardini out of Storm Cat's three-time graded stakes-winning daughter Caress, is a three-quarters brother to Sky Mesa (by A.P. Indy's son Pulpit out of Caress). Then an undefeated winner of the Hopeful Stakes (G1) and Lane's End Breeders' Futurity (G1), Sky Mesa loomed as the horse to beat in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile (G1). Unfortunately, the day before the race Sky Mesa wrenched a right front ankle, an injury that not only kept him out of the Breeders' Cup, but also off the Triple Crown trail.

In addition to Velvety and Sky Mesa, Caress also produced graded scorer Golden Velvet, herself dam of the Groupie Doll Stakes (G3) scorer Innovative Idea (by Bernardini, therefore another close relative to the dam of Maxfield) and of the Knickerbocker Stakes (G2T) victor, Lucullan. Another Caress daughter, Archeology, a sister to Golden Velvet, produced Japanese graded winner Archimedes.

Caress had a pair of talented full siblings in graded winners Country Cat and Bernstein, a successful sire in North and South America, including of Tepin and Karakontie. Their dam La Affirmed also produced Danzig's son Della Francesca, a group and graded stakes winner who was also classic-placed in Europe. La Affirmed is also ancestress of several other stakes winners, including graded winning Wiseman's Ferry, Good Samaritan, and Brave Nation.

A daughter of Triple Crown hero Affirmed out of the Round Table mare, La Mesa, La Affirmed is a sister to Lovelier, who took the Miss Grillo Stakes (G3T) at 2, and three-quarters sister to champion and Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies (G1) captress Outstandingly (by Exclusive Native out of La Mesa). This is a branch of the La Troienne family, and Maxfield's fifth dam, Finance, is a half sister to the previously mentioned Buckpasser.

Maxfield is one of nine stakes winners from 90 starters for Street Sense out of mares by A.P. Indy or his sons and grandsons, and as an obverse to his record with fillies against colts at the grade 1 level, eight of them are males. He also follows Callback and Castaway as the third graded winner by Street Sense from the La Troienne family. BH
