The concept of Saturday in Design – to entertain visitors in your own showroom, with your own culture – took off in a big way when it launched in Singapore last year. It was especially heartening to witness the extent to which the local design community, suppliers and showrooms came out and embraced the idea.
This year, the second edition promises an even greater action-packed line-up of programmes. We will play host to a number of internationally renowned guests, and are honoured to once again have the strong support from the industry. The response from participating exhibitors has also been exceedingly enthusiastic.
Singapore is the perfect environment to hold a boutique-style event like Saturday in Design. Its design scene is thriving – established local architects and designers are carving a name for themselves on an international scale; young creatives who have received their education abroad have returned to build their careers and establish themselves; creative
talent from near and far see the country as the central design hub of Southeast Asia and are making their way here to live and work.
The pool of creative talent and knowledge in Singapore continues to grow, which can only bode well for the industry and the community. And because Saturday in Design is fundamentally based on the aggregation of ideas and the collaborative efforts of many, this second edition in Singapore will doubtlessly be our most memorable one yet.

Dream’s showroom will transform into an exhibition space with three unique installations that will pique your curiosity and promote interactivity. Duct Tape Objects, a collaboration with Asylum, features an interactive exploration of material and architecture. The Hanging Cubes installation from Studio Terre is another sight to behold, as a series of 15 floating white cubes are suspended in mid air to resemble a pixelated cloud. Stick your head – literally – in the clouds and take an insightful peek into Dream’s product and brand representation. There is also the collaborative window display by Dream X Elixr, a mixture of shapes and textures inspired by Dream’s furniture brands and home accessories. Enjoy your 30 seconds of fame as you stand ‘under the light’. Lastly, Dream hosts the relaunch of Kvadrat’s Hallingdal 65 exhibition, featuring presentations by Todd Bracher Studio, Henrik Tjærby, David Taylor and Ministry of Design. theasylum.com.sg

Interior Design Creative Director, Tina Lai will be at the APS Lifestyle showroom to demonstrate her unique approach to cooking. Lai’s hybrid mesh of food and design will also be on display in the “What’s Inside Your SMEG?” exhibition; take a peek inside the Smeg refrigerators that she has ‘interior designed’ to match its colourful exteriors.
The Contrac-Image/Interface installation reflects an amalgamation of the senses – emphasising a hybrid of innovation, design and teamwork. Your senses will come alive as you get a first-hand experience of the company’s commitment to social responsibility and the environment. tp.edu.sg
Take a walk through the quirky mock home set up at Park Mall’s Atrium space. Weave through the 3D cardboard cut-outs of interior staples, including furniture for the living and dining rooms, the kitchen and the bedroom. The installation features the newly launched Ximula Black Series that stretches throughout the entire exhibition. Whether it’s the console table in the living room, the shelving cabinets in the kitchen or the wardrobe in the bedroom, this installation accentuates the modular system’s integration into any home space. momoandpartners.com

Zen-Kei, which literally means “Panorama” in Japanese, provides the point of departure for this particular installation. Layers of vertical fins expand and compress, giving an almost trellis-like feel that frames your viewpoint in very specific ways. The fins eventually lead you to an abstract planter bed of white pebbles, TOTO shower sets transformed into metallic plants, and a combination of suspended lights and chair fixtures that resemble foliage. The entire installation is set against a backdrop of recycled wood pellets, suggesting a certain hybridity and strangeness. fuur.com
