Glorifying God by … Reaching, Building, Serving
March 2015
From Randy...
Ladies Tea Saturday, March 14, 2015
2:00-4:00 pm
"These boots are made for walking..." Rev. Lynn Litchfield of GraceInside, a Virginia prison ministry, will be our guest speaker.
She will tell us how her shoes have taken her many places in her life and how God has led her every step of the way.
For we walk by faith , not by sight. 2 Corinthians 5:7
To reserve your seat or table, call Sharon Band @ 775-2456
God calls particular people to particular places for particular purposes….Thank you for your positive com-
ments regarding our sermon series on Jonah. We have found Jonah to be a story of people like you and me. We
have walked with Jonah while identifying with his struggles, his calling, his prayer life. As we close out our se-
ries on March 1st, we will have also looked at his successes, failures and a second chance. Thanks for being
GOOD LISTENERS and RESPONDERS.
Redeeming the time….Look at the opportunities that are ahead of us in the month of March to invite and bring
friends to Shiloh. Events like our Children’s Movie Night, our annual Women’s Tea, and our choir’s cantata on
Palm and Easter Sundays are great outreach opportunities. As we prepare to set our clocks ahead one hour on
Sunday, March 8 (Spring Forward), let us as a church redeem the time wisely.
Early on the first day of the week while it was still dark….Easter week comes early this
year. Let me encourage you to consider attending the Wednesday night service on April 1st that
follows the Wednesday night dinner. Each attending adult will be given a crucifixion nail to
handle during the service and to take home as a means of preparing ourselves for sunrise and
Easter worship on April 5. The service will focus on Jesus’ saying from the cross.
Go into all the world….Remember the Annie Armstrong offering for missions as you anticipate your response to
our church’s endeavor to support mission work in North America. Remember when it comes to the giving of
tithes and offerings that God loves a cheerful giver.
Bless the Lord, O my soul; and all that is within me,
bless his holy name. ~Psalm 103:1
Shiloh has a new phone number (540) 775-4646 The old number will disconnect in a few weeks. Please start using the new one!

An Approved Workman for the Lord by Joe Parker
A familiar childhood nursery rhyme provides a
working analogy of combining words and
action: “Here’s the church and here’s the steeple;
open the doors and see all the people.”
As we search for a new pastor, this little rhyme
reminds us of our responsibility to God and His
church. The first portion of the rhyme reminds us
of the structural characteristics of the church.
When we open the doors and see the people, we
are reminded that we are the church: Matthew
18:20—“For where two or three are gathered in
my name, there am I in the middle of them.”
The history of Shiloh, The First 150 Years, tells
of a poem penned in the old scriptwriting and sta-
pled to Rev. Montague’s obituary. Rev Montague
presumably wrote this poem titled “Dedicated to
the Shiloh Church of King George by her Pastor.”
Pastor Montague evidently thought an awful lot of
his relationship with the people of Shiloh Church.
These poetic excerpts eloquently sum up his rela-
tionship between the church and himself:
Through many a long and weary year,
My wants you have supplied;
To smooth my path, my heart to cheer,
You’ve left no means untried. Through winter’s cold and summer’s heat,
You’ve battled by my side;
The hosts of satan to defeat
With all their boasted pride.
As we look to the future, may we be guided by the history of our
past. Our Board of Directors and Deacons have already acted in a
timely and prudent manner in selecting Rev. Randy Allensworth as
our supply pastor. They also elected to increase the hours and re-
sponsibilities of Rev. Ray Tubbs, Jr., our current Minister of Chil-
dren, to help with the transition.
The next responsibility falls upon the “people” of the church to
support the pastor search team, church staff, and supply pastor dur-
ing the process of identifying a new Workman for the Lord, in ac-
cordance with 2 Timothy 2:15: “Study to show thyself approved
unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly divid-
ing the word of truth.” Dr. Fred Anderson, Executive Director, Vir-
ginia Baptist Historical Society, made a similar remark regarding
Rev. James O. Kirk who pastored Shiloh 1876-1887: “He was a
workman who was not ashamed….” As we “open the doors and see all the people,” may we be of one
accord and support the search team for our 20th pastor and may we endeavor to ask the Lord to provide His guidance and wisdom in search for His approved workman.

“Precious Memories” series
Last month when I wrote about Julia Lumpkin, I was troubled by the fact that I didn’t include a photo of her grandson, Michael. That’s
the incentive for our Precious Memories series that will appear in several future issues on this page. We never want anybody to forget
those who meant the world to us. Although we believe they are in heaven, we want to honor and remember their earthly lives. So send me
one photo of your loved one, along with a short biographical paragraph no bigger than the size of the entry below. I’ll use my grandmoth-
er as a sample. I’m always looking for some reason to write about her. We’ll try to fit several entries to a page. Please submit the photo
and paragraph to either the church office or to me at [email protected] or call 775-9434 if you need a photo scanned. Thanks.
Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort—2 Corinthians 1:3
Mary Maude Frank Edwards, my grandmother, was born in 1891 at Graball in Wel-
come, King George County. Her parents were Almenia Bertha Lee and Jeremiah Andrew
Frank. She attended the public schools of King George County and State Normal and
Industrial School for Women, now University of Mary Washington. She taught in the
public schools of King George for 7 years. She then went to work at the Bureau of Print-
ing and Engraving in Washington, D.C. She married John F. Edwards in 1917 and reared
eight children. During World War II, she returned to her teaching profession. She was
devoted to Shiloh, faithful in her attendance and service. She taught a men’s Sunday
School class and was active in WMU and the Baptist Training Union. She led me on my
Christian journey for which I am forever grateful.—Cynthia King Miller

Children’s Ministry Is March already here? Wow time flies when
you are having fun. So far this year we have had a
family game night and a couple of roller skating
events. On March 6, 5-7:30 pm we are going to
have a Children’s Movie Night (that’s right youth,
only children this time). We will be watching Big
Hero 6 on the big screen using the sound system. It
will be just like being at the movies. We will have
pizza, popcorn, and maybe even some candy in our
concessions booth. Our Easter Eggstravaganza will
be Saturday, April 4th, from 10-12. There will be
lunch, crafts, an Easter story with a special guest,
and of course CANDY. Please invite all your
friends, neighbors and family! On a different note, I
am looking for some volunteers to help out during
2nd hour on Sundays. Please contact me if you
would like to know more.

Youth Group The youth are continuing their Bible studies on
Wednesday nights and Sunday evenings.
Sixteen youth and 4 adult chaperones will be go-
ing with World Changers to Philadelphia, PA on a
missions trip. Be looking for emails concerning the
Bible study times and prayer events that will be
coming up for this trip.
Great job to all the youth that participated in
Youth Sunday. Lots of compliments were received
on the wonderful job the youth did. Youth are al-
ways invited to help with services. See Ray Tubbs
for ways to help.
Remember to check the bulletin and website for
any upcoming events.
Missions Focus Annie Armstrong North American Missions
and Prison Ministries
In March, Southern Baptists celebrate our mis-
sionaries who serve in North America. Please pray
for these missionaries as they serve the Lord. There
are offering envelopes for the Annie Armstrong
North American Missions offering available for you
to give as you feel led.
We will also focus on Prison ministries. The
speaker for the Ladies Tea (Saturday, March 14,
2:00 pm) will be Rev. Lynn Litchfield. Lynn is em-
ployed by GraceInside, a Virginia prison ministry
whose purpose is to provide full-time chaplains for
prison facilities. Virginia is unique in that our chap-
lains are not state employees. Our chaplains are pri-
vately funded by caring individuals, churches, de-
nominations, foundations and businesses. We will
have socks available for you to fill with coins for
this ministry. There will be boxes for you to deposit
your filled socks. The socks will be given to Lynn
during our tea. If there are any late donations, the
money will be sent to GraceInside at the end of the
month.

Music News Hi Everyone! I hope you are staying warm in this
crazy cold weather and enjoying a snow day or
two. February was a fun month with the Top 4
Countdown of Shiloh's Favorite Hymns! In case you
missed it, here is a little statistical info from our
game.
I received 44 responses to the survey and 104 dif-
ferent hymns were listed! There was one vote differ-
ence between the top 2 hymns and I actually didn't
vote so maybe I could have tipped the scales!! The
all time favorite hymns of Shiloh Baptist Church
were:
#1 Amazing Grace! How Sweet the Sound
#2 How Great Thou Art
#3 The Old Rugged Cross
#4 What a Friend We Have in Jesus
Some other popular hymns were:
Have Thine Own Way, Lord
Holy, Holy, Holy
In the Garden
It Is Well with My Soul
There Is Power in the Blood
Thanks for participating in the survey, it was real-
ly fun! I also received lots of suggestions for other
hymns, so you will be singing more of your favor-
ites.
Church Resource Center March is a good month for spring cleaning. The
Church Media Library will be clearing out some out-
dated and duplicated materials to empty shelf space
for new books and CDs/DVDs. A table will be
placed in the Family Life Center. Please take any-
thing your family or friends would enjoy. We appre-
ciate the many generous donations from the Shiloh
family. We have found some true treasures for the
library in your generosity. Sadly, we are unable
to keep everything. Check the table often as we
will be adding items throughout the month of
March.
On March 29, we will present For Such a One as
This. This musical will depict the last few days of the
life of Christ. It will feature Sounds of Praise, our
instrumentalists and actors, coached by Elizabeth
Lee. You won't want to miss this one. We will start
with the days before the Crucifixion on Palm Sunday
then we will proclaim the Resurrection on Easter
morning!
As always, it is a great time to join a choir or
share some special music. Let me know if you want
to get involved!
