My Fair (Little Old) Lady Is a Grand Slam of a Show.

George Bernard Shaw may be whirling in his grave, but members of ACBL-land gave a standing ovation last night to Peter Rank’s bridge musical version of Shaw’s Pygmalion, which opened last night in the Grand Hyatt’s Randle Room.

Four more shows are scheduled during the NABC – tonight, through Tuesday next week. All but the Sunday show will be at 11 p.m. You can watch the show Sunday at 6:45 p.m .

Rank’s clever and humorous play tells the story of Eliza Bidlittle’s inadvertent march to the top of the ACBL ladder with her expert partner, Henry Huddle.

In the process, Rank explores all aspects of the game we love – from the thrill of winning at a club game to the excitement of a win in the Blue Ribbon Pairs. He even gives us insight into the challenges facing directors in making their rulings “according to the book.”

The production is enhanced by the innovative direction of David A. Clark, who deftly explores the divisions we all experience at the bridge table – from masterpoint holdings to the battle of the sexes.

Best of all are the enthusiastic performances of the all-bridge-player-or-bridge-family cast, all non-professsional.

Diana Halliday as Eliza Bidlittle magically transforms herself from an English Sheepdog of a Junior player to a beautiful national champion (I Could Have Player All Night).

Nate McCay cleverly embodies the perfect expert attitude as Henry Huddle, who fi nally gives in to the charms and bridge skills of Eliza (I’ve Grown Accustomed to Her Bids). Melani Bruce is a hilarious Miss Ruling, the club director (At the Club that I Run) and Sheila Loftus as Alfa Bidlittle appropriates the tipsy and brassy bridge player we’ve seen once or twice. All this is coupled with an all-singing, all-doubling chorus of players – including three chauvinist male players (Why Can’t a Woman Play More Like a Man?).

JUST FOR NEW PLAYERS

Thinking bridgeBy Eddie Kantar

Dlr: North A Q 4 Vul: E-W Q 8 2 9 7 3 2 Q J 8 10 9 7 3 2 J 8 6 5 5 4 3 A 10 8 A J 6 4 10 6 3 A 9 7 4 K K J 10 9 7 6 K Q 5 K 5 2 West North East South Pass 1 1 Pass 2 Pass 4 All Pass

Opening lead: 10.Bidding commentary: North’s passed-hand

cuebid shows a hand too strong to raise to 2, typically 11-12 support points. A raise to 2 is an underbid. A jump to 3 is weak (jump raises of overcalls show good trumps but not good hands). The cuebid replaces the jump raise – the best of

both worlds. Defensive commentary: From East’s point

of view, with the 9 in dummy, the lead must be from shortness. If the 9 had not been in dummy, the lead could have been from 10-9-x-(x). East goes up with the A and returns the 4, suit preference for clubs in case West ruffs.

Play commentary: South should be aware of what is going on. West is now void in diamonds, and when East gets in with the A, he will give West a diamond ruff. That, along with the A, will be four defensive tricks. As declarer, you have an answer. After winning the K at trick two, overtake the K and discard the Q on the Q. A queen for a queen. Now it is safe to lead trumps because there is no longer a threat of a diamond ruff. East can play a diamond, but your heart spots are bigger than any outstanding spots. West is helpless.

When an honor card (10)

is led and the next lower card (9) is visible, assume the lead is from shortness.

When partner leads from known shortness and you, third hand, win the trick, the card you return in that suit is suit preference in case partner ruffs.

By Marti RonemusDear New Player:Yesterday I promised you I would share

one of my bridge pet peeves, but fi rst a small digression.

I always thought that as I grew older, I would become one of those nice old ladies with rosy cheeks, a smile for everyone, baking cookies and calling everyone “dearie.” You know, one of those nice old darlings everyone loves. Much to my surprise and dismay, it isn’t turning out that way.

Instead I’m becoming—oh all right, I’ll admit it—a curmudgeon. Every day, my willingness to Suffer Fools Gladly decreases along with the fuse on my temper. Just this afternoon, the only thing that stopped me from giving the idiot who cut me off in the parking lot a piece of my mind was the fear he might have a handgun under the seat. Clerks who can’t make change, doctors who keep me waiting, waiting, waiting, misplaced apostrophes on signs … the list goes on and on, getting longer every day. Eventually, I’m going to turn into one of those old ladies, sitting in a rocker on the porch with a nasty cane and a supply of worthless old beanie babies to throw at neighborhood children, cackling madly.

Meantime, nothing makes me happier than a platform from which I can air my pet peeves. And here it is … 750 words, all for me, every day. See me smile.

So, my bridge pet peeve, even more annoying than partners who can’t remember to bid over my takeout doubles, is card snapping. Yup. The sound of a card snap drives me NUTS. Every time I hear that sound, I mentally reach for the throat of the snapper.

Why? First of all, card snapping is just plain tacky. Picture cigarette-ash-covered card players with a ratty, fi lthy deck of cards. That’s what card snappers look like. Ugh.

Second, it ruins the cards. You’ll notice that a lot of cards these days have bar codes on them. That’s because they are dealt with a Duplimate dealing machine. Those bar-coded cards are hugely expensive, and when people snap the cards, it bends the corners and the card won’t go through the machine.

Third, snapped cards can carry a message: “There, take that!” “Ha! Gotcha!” “How do you like that!” It’s a nasty, passive-aggressive thing to do.

Classy players lower their cards to the table and then just let them go. Watch and see if I’m not right. The nicest people just play their cards with style and panache…no snapping from them!

Apparently I’m not the only one bothered by this. Here’s an actual e-mail I received recently:

“People with hearing aids (that’s me) have a very diffi cult time with people snapping the cards. It sounds like a shotgun in my ears when they snap the cards. After a couple of hours I get a splitting headache. And I know that I’m not alone in this. I’ve had many people tell me it bothers them too. I’ve read in the ACBL Bulletin that it is rude! I guess some people don’t read the Bridge Bulletin.

“I made a little sign and put it in the center of the table saying ‘Please don’t snap your cards.’ I needed to call the director three times about it in Houston. One partner told me that everyone does it and if you can’t take it, you shouldn’t play bridge. Well, I’m going to take her suggestion after the next big tournament in which I’m obligated to play. I quit!”

My gosh. And I thought I got upset about it! Yowza. I really think this gal needs a new hearing aid. Imagine her around a popcorn machine, or a gum-snapper (another of my pet peeves). Wow. At any rate, I am eager for you to be the most desirable, most pleasant, classiest players at the tournament. So stop snapping those cards. Grrrr.

Well. I feel much better having aired one of my peeves.

Okay, here’s today’s bridge tip. When the opponents are in a partscore contract and you don’t have a great lead, try a trump. Why? When the opponents are in game, they usually have the

point count and powerful hands. When they are in a partscore, they will frequently need their trumps to ruff losers. A trump lead could keep declarer from ruffi ng losers in dummy. That’s a good thing! You’re going to be amazed how often you will set the contract.

Please e-mail me with your pet peeves, bridge questions, life problems or newcomer experiences. I’m one of the few people who actually want to hear them, and as you see, I depend on you for material for these columns. [email protected]

Intermediate-newcomer players come in all ages. These three are students at UCLA. They are Julie Curtis, Bobby Liu and Michael Shindler.

Just like Mr. D. FinesseBy this time, everyone knows about Deep

Finesse, the computer program that can tell you how to make or defeat any contract that can be made or defeated, although DF has the advantage of being able to see all the cards.

It is worth noting, therefore, when a human picks the one and only card identifi ed by DF as the killing defense. The deal was played in the World Transnational Open Teams in Sao Paulo, Brazil, earlier this year. The hero was Peter Boyd of USA1.

Dlr: South 6Vul: E-W K Q 7 5 J 8 6 4 2 K 10 4 J 9 A K 10 5 4 A J 8 3 10 9 K 10 7 5 3 Q 9 8 6 3 2 A J Q 8 7 3 2 9 6 4 2 A Q 7 5West North East South Robinson Boyd PassPass Pass 1 Pass1NT Dbl 2 22 3 3 All PassBoyd led the 9, taken in dummy with the ace.

Declarer could have made his contract by simply taking the club fi nesse, cashing the A and exiting with a low diamond. It’s not as easy when you can’t see all the cards, however, so declarer played on diamonds at trick two, leading the 9 to his king and Boyd’s ace.

At this point, there was only one card in Boyd’s hand that he could play to defeat 3 – and he found it: the Q.

Say Boyd exited with a heart. Declarer ruffs, ruffs a diamond, ruffs a heart and ruffs a diamond, noting Boyd’s discard. If Boyd discards a club, declarer ruffs a heart, plays the A and exits with a club or a diamond. Boyd would be down to all trumps and forced to ruff and then lead into the A K 10.

A low spade does not do the job because declarer can take the trick in dummy, take the club fi nesse, cash the A, ruff a diamond and eventually get South down to the point where he would have to ruff one of his partner’s winners and lead into the spade tenace.

After the play of the Q, declarer can win in hand, ruff a diamond, take the club fi nesse, cash the A and exit with a diamond, but North can win a diamond, cash another and give South a ruff while he still has an out card in hearts. Boyd would still have a trump trick with 8 7 3 against declarer’s K 10 5.

Plus 100 was a 5-IMP pickup because at the other table, North-South played in 4 off two.

Safety firstOn this deal from the Seniors Bowl at the

World Bridge Championships in Sao Paulo, Brazil, England’s David Price made a 100% correct expert play in the fi fth set of his team’s semifi nal match against Indonesia. The play cost him one trick and could have cost two, but it assured the success of the contract.

Dlr: South J 10 8 7 5Vul: N-S 10 9 7 4 2 9 7 5 4 3 A 2 J 6 K 8 5 K Q J 4 2 10 8 6 3 Q 9 3 2 K J 7 4 K Q 9 6 A Q 3 A 5 A 10 8 6Price was in 4 from the North hand on the

lead of the 5. He guessed well to put in dummy’s queen and played a trump to East’s ace. East

continued with what looks to be the worst card he could possibly have selected, the K. All Price had to do was to win the ace and claim the rest of the tricks, but he called for dummy’s 3! East failed to give his partner a ruff, so Price made an overtrick and, with the Indonesians stopping short of game in the other room, that was worth 10 IMPs to England.

But why did Price duck the K? The answer is that he could afford to see the A ruffed out on the third round of the suit but not the second.

Consider the two lines of play if hearts are 4-1. If declarer covers the K with the ace and it is ruffed, a diamond switch establishes a winner for the defense, and that winner can be cashed when declarer concedes a heart to the jack – down one.

But when declarer ducks the K, the defense is powerless. If the heart ruff is not given there is no possibility for a fourth trick. If the defense does take its ruff and switches to a diamond, declarer has time to ruff out the J and that creates a discard for dummy’s diamond loser. Again, 10 tricks are secure.

Husband and wife Wendy Turk and Chris Champion are two of the volunteers staffing the Prize Desk. Prizes awarded for section tops and first overall. Hours are 8:30 to 10:15 a.m., 11:30 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. and 6:15 to 7:20 p.m.

Teachers and club owners are the backbone of the ACBL. They were honored at a reception yesterday. Attending were: ACBL Education Director Julie Greenberg, teacher Dick Morris of Portland OR, ACBL Director of Club and Member Services Carol Robertson and Club Manager Steve Shirey of Fort Worth TX.

Slow PlaySlow play, as opposed to careful or thoughtful

play, is discourteous to your opponents -- and to all other competitors as well. Players and pairs who take more than their allotted time are subject to penalty.

In general, pairs who are rarely late will be warned while pairs who are habitually tardy and/or pay no attention to time limits will be penalized.

I didn’t spot any deals worth reporting from our match but heard later of Debbie’s fi ne inference on this deal from the event: Dlr: West A K 6 Vul: N-S A 4 9 6 A J 9 8 6 4 10 9 J 7 3 Q 8 5 K J 9 7 3 A K J 8 5 4 2 7 5 Q 10 7 3 Q 8 5 4 2 10 6 2 Q 10 3 K 2 West North East South Michael R. Debbie R. 2 (1) 3 Pass Pass Dbl Pass 3 Pass 4 Dbl Pass 4 Pass Pass Dbl All Pass

(1) Natural, unbalanced, 9-13 HCP.Michael Rosenberg’s double of 4 was

intended for penalties but Debbie expected this to be suitable for spades. The opponents can hold their loss to one trick, so it was right to be in 4 despite the work required to succeed in that contract.

The defenders led two top diamonds and East signalled for a heart by pitching the 3.

West obediently shifted to the 5, suggesting three. Debbie needed the spades to be 3-2, and West had 10 red cards, so she placed him with short clubs.

Having drawn this conclusion, Rosenberg won the A and found the fi ne move of advancing the J. Had this held the trick, she would have drawn two trumps with the ace and king then unblocked clubs and pitched the heart loser on the Q.

Whether East ruffed or not, declarer could ruff

one heart and throw the other on the club ace.In fact, East covered the J, so declarer took

the trump ace and queen, set up the clubs via the ruffi ng fi nesse and made 11 tricks.

Here is another deal from the World Transnational Open Teams, actually the last of the qualifying Swiss.

Roy Welland wished to make the top eight so as to qualify for the knockouts, but assessed the need for a big swing to do so. This was the deal. Welland was playing with Mike Kamil. Dlr: North J 9 5 Vul: None A J 9 7 3 2 A 10 8 5 10 8 7 6 K 3 Q 8 4 K 5 2 8 K Q 9 5 4 3 Q J 9 4 2 K 6 A Q 4 2 10 6 A J 10 7 6 7 3 West North East South Welland Kamil Pass 1 Pass 1 Dbl 2 Dbl All Pass

The defense to 2 doubled started with the 10, which went round to the king. North let the K win in case East had the A, but took the next club to switch to a low spade to the king and ace. Back came a heart to the jack. Welland carefully avoided cashing the heart ace, fi rst leading a trump through. This told Kamil that Welland still had an entry, which had to be the J. The diamond went to the king and ace, and Kamil underled his Q to Welland’s jack. Now came the A, on which South pitched a spade, and the fourth round of hearts promoted a fourth trump trick for South for down 800.

Welland’s wish was granted. The swing was enough for his team to make the knockouts.

(no in and out). The rate is good for overnight guests of the hotel and drive-in guests. Valet parking is $22.

NABC InsiderThe Insider stayed up late last night to take in

the show of shows here at the San Diego NABC. Like everything else about the tournament, it was a phenomenal performance (see page 1). Peter Rank and David Clark put together a super cast. All the actors hit their marks and the high notes. The crowd loved it and has demanded encore performances. My Fair (Little Old) Lady will return for four more shows. If you didn’t make it last night, be sure to catch one of the next four, or, if you were there, come back for an encore of your own. The curtain rises in the Randle Ballroom again tonight following the evening session.

Ask Me Girl has established the second fl oor landing of the Seaport Tower escalator as her home base. Those of you who are NABC+ players who never left the lobby level yesterday, but failed to qualify for the second day of the LMs can take some solace in knowing they can see her on their way to the regional room. She is in her usual great mood and, so far, still has her voice.

While on the second fl oor, be sure to visit the vendors, pick up your registration gift and get your Bridge Bucks. The Insider usually spends the fi rst full day of an NABC making excuses for the things that didn’t go exactly as planned, but the hotel staff, the Tournament Services guys, the Memphis staff and all the TDs seem to have covered all the bases and the only thing the Insider had to do yesterday was deliver a box of push pins to the Registration Desk message board. As mentioned before, even the S.C. is especially mellow – blue skies, full sections, a luxury suite and a bottle of single malt will do that. Thanks for doing your part by playing some bridge.

Now that most everyone is checked into the hotel, the S.C. is looking for some really good table counts, some fi erce competition, a bunch of new Life Masters (and another bottle of single malt). Play well.

Child care availableChild care is available during the Fall NABC

from noon to 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. to midnight. Activities include swimming, art and bridge lessons (noon to 12:30 p.m.). There will be a pizza party on Thursday. For more information, contact Donna Compton in Room 631 at the Manchester Grand Hyatt.

Notice to playerswho live outsideNorth America

Participation in the Kaplan Blue Ribbon Pairs and the 0-5000 Mini-Blue Ribbon Pairs is limited to those ACBL members who have earned a Blue Ribbon qualifi cation (or for those members on the Lifetime Top 100 masterpoint list).

Foreign players must receive a waiver. They should be aware that waivers are granted on a one-time-only basis. Previous waivers can’t be used. This is a change from last year.

For waiver information, please see Tournament Director Millard Nachtwey here at the tournament. He may be contacted through the Tournament Headquarters offi ce, and he will also be available at the selling sites.

Convention cardreminder

Each player is required to have a convention card fi lled out legibly and on the table throughout a session. Both cards of a partnership must be identical and include the fi rst and last names of each member of the partnership.

If a director determines that neither player has a substantially completed card, the partnership may play only the Standard American Yellow Card and may use only standard carding. This restriction may be lifted only at the beginning of a subsequent round after convention cards have been properly prepared and approved by the director. Further, the partnership will receive a 1/6-board matchpoint penalty for each board played, commencing with the next round and continuing until the restriction is lifted. In IMP team games, penalties shall be at the discretion of the director.

If the director determines the partnership has at least one substantially completed convention card but has not fully complied with ACBL regulations, the director may give warnings or assign such penalties as he deems to be appropriate under the circumstances.

The objective of these warnings and penalties is the encouragement of full compliance with ACBL regulations.
