help and call EMS. If someone

is with you, have them go and

call.

When calling on the phone for help, what

number do YOU use?

When you talk to the dispatcher you should tell them:

1. What happened - ex. "my brother cut his arm" or

"my Grandpa is choking"

2. Where it happened - ex. "by th e fountain in the

park" or "my address is. . ."

3. What phone num ber you are calling from (i fs

usually on the front of the phone)

4. Answer ALL th e disp atcher 's qu estio ns. Never han gup until they tell you to.

Warning! Never call 9-1-1 as a joke.

You might take help

away from someone who

really needs it. . .and

they could die.

IF SOMEONE IS NOT BREATHING:

B. OPEN THE AIRWAYHead tilt / Chin liftPlace the palm of one

hand on the victim's

forehead and press

backwards. At the same

time, place your other

hand un der th e bony pa rt of the ir lower jaw on

th e side near est to you , and lift up (forward)

on the chin.

C. LOOK INSIDE THEIR MOUTHLook inside to see if there is anything

in there that they could be choking

on. If there is, carefully take it out

with your fingers.

D. RESCUE BREATHINGBreathe for them by pinching

their nose and placing your

mouth over their whole mouth,

or their mouth and nose (if it's

a baby). Slowly blow your airinto their mouth. Take a new  breath and try

it again. Keep on breathing for them until they

can breath on their own or until help arrives.

ADULTS - Need 1 breath every 5-6 seconds

LITTLE KIDS £r BABIES - Need 1 breath every 3 seconds

ONLY GIVE BABIES LITTLE  PUFFS OF

YOUR BREATH. 0

use a mouth shield

when giving rescue

breathing.

CAN'T TALK, BUT IS AWAKE

C. Do the Heimlich Maneuver(Infant)1. 5 back blows

2. 5 chest thrusts

3. Repeat back blows & chest thr ust s until object

comes out

D. If the child/in fant becomes unconsciousl.Look in the mouth. If there is anything in there,

remove it. If not . . . .

2. Give two slow breaths. If air won't go in . . .

3. Give 5 more back blows.

4. Give 5 chest thrusts.

5. Repeat steps until breaths go in or help arrives.

E. Child or adult1. Stand behind the victim and give abdominal

thrusts until object comes out.F. If person becomes unconscious

l.Look in the mouth. If there is anything in there,

remove it. If not . . . .

2. Give two slow breaths. If air won't go in . . .

3. Give 5 absominal thrusts.

4. Repeat steps until breaths go in or help arrives.

If anything comes out, LOOK if the victim is

breathing. If not, RESCUE BREATHE for them.

from the other person's blood.

PRESS a clean cloth or

towel over the area that

is bleeding.

If you can, rest it on

something that"s higher, like a

bucket or stool.

KEEP PRESSING th e bleeding area u nti lhelp comes. NO PEEKING!

COVER the person who is hurt with a blanket

or coat to keep them warm until HELP comes.

Signs of shock are thirst, nausea, cold clammy

skin, and fast shallow breathing.

DON'T PULL OUT ANY OBJECT - place a towel

or bandage around it so it will not move.

them go to the hospital NOW! Don't Wait! It could be

The best way to help someone who is choking is to:

a. Perform theHeimlich maneuver until the airway is cleared

b. Pat them gently on the back until the food comes out.

c Tell them they will be OKd. Cough with them to show them how.

The best way to stop bleeding is to:

a. Lay down and wait for it to stop.

b. Use a tissue and keep wiping the blood off.

c Run cold water over it

d. Press firmly with a clean cloth over the bleeding area and

lift the part above the heart if possible.

If someone is having chest pains that will not goaway after a few minutes they should:

a. Try to rest and see if it gets worse
