JOIN US IN JAMAICA THIS JUNE FOR THE 5TH BIENNIAL JAMAICA - DIASPORA CONFERENCE 2013 Convened by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, (MFAFT), the Biennial Jamaica Diaspora Conference is the main forum through which Jamaica engages with the Diaspora. This year’s re-branded event places special focus on Trade and Investment. Conference 2013 seeks to build on the legacy of the Jamaica’s 50 celebrations by exploring defined opportunities for the Diaspora to expand their business interests in Jamaica through increased trade and investment - large and small. Participants will also engage in discussions about ways to expand and facilitate the Diaspora’s contribution to Health and Education in Jamaica; social partnerships both as individuals and organized groups.

WHO CAN ATTEND THE CONFERENCE Anyone of Jamaican descent who resides outside of Jamaica, can attend and participate in the conference. There are no restrictions. The event will bring together a diverse group of Jamaicans living overseas with Jamaicans at home, in an effort to facilitate and broaden the Diaspora’s engagement and involvement with the affairs of the country of their origin. Whether you are a member of an organization, or an interested Jamaican seeking an avenue to contribute to Jamaica’s development - come, join us for meaningful dialogue and action. MAIN AREAS OF FOCUS The Programme for Conference 2013 is structured around two main areas: • Business , Trade and Investment, • Philanthropy, Social Investment and Diaspora Diplomacy These will be treated within the framework of the core goals of Jamaica’s Vision 2030: Empowering our people to maximize the value of their skills, expertise and creativity Creating economic prosperity Peace and harmony to provide a safe place to live, work, do business and raise families Protecting our natural environment, using our resources to facilitate development. A) BUSINESS TRADE AND INVESTMENT Business Trade and Investment will focus on Priority Economic Projects in Jamaica’s Medium Term Socio- Economic Policy Framework 2012-2015. The following Major Development Projects and other opportunities now available to the Diaspora are among those to be highlighted during the conference: Global Logistics Hub | Agro Parks | ICT Parks & Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) Medical Tourism | Jamaica’s Stock Exchange | MSME investment opportunities Redevelopment of Downtown Kingston | Creative Industries and Sports The newly introduced Diaspora Marketplace and the participatory conference sessions, will present specific opportunities to the Diaspora for small and large investing. Options and opportunities for the Diaspora with the Jamaica Stock Exchange Junior markets, the Diaspora Bond, and Venture Capital Partnerships for MSMEs, will be presented and explored.

B) PHILANTROPHY, SOCIAL INVESTMENT AND DIPLOMACY Emphasis during Conference 2013 will be on ways to strengthen and expand the Diaspora’s significant contribution to Healthcare and Education, as well as interesting individuals and groups to invest in specific infrastructure developments related to these areas. The discussions on Diaspora Diplomacy will focus attention on the existing Policies in the major host countries of Canada, the UK and the USA - what these policies mean for Jamaicans overseas, the opportunities, and the real issues that exist: • Immigration Policies • Foreign Accounts Transaction Compliance Act (FATCA) • Air Passenger Duty (APD) Emphasis will be placed on identifying solutions and exploring the ways in which Jamaica can work with, and assist Jamaicans, in dealing with these policy issues in the countries where they reside. Discussions will focus on: • Capitalizing on opportunities | Developing strategies for dealing with challenges

The sessions will also review key socio - economic partnerships existing between Jamaica and its Diaspora, and the critical input of the younger generations to sustain these links.

3) THE NEW DIASPORA MARKETPLACE Signature daily exposition featuring targetted public and private sector participants. Exhibits, expertise, services and engagement. Business Consultations and networking for local and Diaspora Investors and with providers of goods and services of interest to the Diaspora target audience. There will also be special interactions with the Jamaica Stock Exchange, the Planning Institute of Jamaica (PIOJ), JAMPRO, the Jamaica Tourist Board, sponsoring companies, tertiary institutions, other key public agencies and exhibitors.

6) GOVERNOR-GENERAL’S ACHIEVEMENT AWARDS JAMAICA DIASPORA AWARD OF EXCELLENCE The Governor-General's Achievement Award continues to be recognized as one of Jamaica's most successful and prestigious awards programmes. In 2008, the Governor-General's Jamaica Diaspora Award of Excellence was introduced. The award is presented biennially to three (3) Jamaicans living in the United Kingdom, USA or Canada who have demonstrated active and significant service towards the development of their community of residence, and to the development of Jamaica. As Patron of the Awards, His Excellency the Governor-General, the Most Honourable Sir Patrick Allen, ON, GCMG, CD will deliver the keynote address and confer the Awards on those selected by the Awards Committee. The Awards will be presented at a luncheon on Wednesday 19th June.

7. THE OFFICIAL OPENING CEREMONY AND PRIME MINISTER’S RECEPTION The Conference will have a grand evening opening on Diaspora Day Sunday 16th June, and will take place in the Rose Hall Ballroom - The Hilton Rose Hall Resort and Spa. The Keynote address will be delivered by the Prime Minister, the Most Honourable Portia Simpson Miller, ON, MP. Attendance is by Invitation only to Registered Conference Attendees and other special invitees.
