Environmental commitment

The impact of our activities on theworld is a major source of concern forCanon and, in order to address this, wehave drawn up our own environmentalcharter. All Canon products aredesigned with a view to saving energy,conserving resources and eliminatinghazardous substances. In addition to these measures, Canontakes part in major environmentalprojects, and is, for example, a memberof the GREEN labels (greenprocurement) and the WWF (WorldWildlife Fund).Canon Bretagne is fully committed toan environmental approach, and itsoperations involving the recycling ofend-of-life products, which began in1997, are a perfect illustration of this. In addition, Canon Bretagne offers anexample of environmental excellence in the management of the Liffréproduction site. In 1995 it became thefirst industrial site in France to receiveISO 14001 certification, and it has hadits certification renewed regularly sincethen.

The Canon group has devoted many yearsof hard work to make the Canon spirit areality, and will continue to promote theprinciples of Kyosei and San-ji to makethem last.

At Canon Bretagne, this concept can benoticed through the involvement ofemployees in developing productionmethods and safety at work, through thequality of relationships with partners, andalso through the inclusion of environmentalconcerns at all levels of production. Thisapproach aims at taking social concerns(tough working conditions, job equality...)into account for the well-being pursuitwithin the company.

For Canon Bretagne, ensuring thereliability of parts and products is notjust a question of a final inspection. Allkey monitoring points (for reliability andsafety) are verified throughout themanufacturing process. Canon Bretagne is certified to ISO 9001since 1993 and ISO 13485 (medicaldevices) since 2007.

Constant innovation

Canon’s constant growth is based on thedevelopment of original products with astrong element of added value, a strategybased on diversification, and the perfectingof new technologies in line with the futureexpectations of customers. For Canon Bretagne, innovation isconcentrated in three areas: technologicalinnovation, human resources andproduction methods. Latest-generationrobots, high-performance equipment andcutting-edge techniques are used tomanufacture the products for which CanonBretagne is responsible. Each process in the manufacture ofproducts can be tackled in the workshopsof the Canon Bretagne production centre:design and mass production, manufactureof electronic boards and plastic andmechanical parts, assembly of products,packaging, after-sales service, andprocessing of end-of-life products. Thanksto this versatility, we have mastered the keyspecialisations in manufacturing.

Since 1986, Canon Bretagne hasdeveloped a solid experience inelectronic boards and in the manual and automated insertion ofcomponents. The workshop is equippedwith machinery capable of positioningup to 2 million components per weekand has a full mastery of SMCpositioning processes and through-holemount components for flow or reflowsoldering (with or without lead), and specific testing methods. CanonBretagne manufactures a wide range of electronic boards using thesetechniques.

Plastic injection and machining

Canon Bretagne has specific workshopsfor the manufacture of plastic andmechanical parts. Specialized in manufacturing of tonercartridges and bottles, Canon Bretagnehas developed know-how in design andfabrication of tools. The plasticprocessing workshop uses the injectionprocess to manufacture a great numberof parts in all kinds of materials, bothtransparent and coloured. Equipped with conventional numericallycontrolled machines as well asmachining centre, the workshop takespart in every step of the manufacturingprocess.

Assembly

Assembly forms the heart of CanonBretagne’s activities, permanentlyfocused on reliability, effectiveness andsafety. Whether production is on asmall, medium or large scale, theorganisation of the module-basedworkshop, allows flexibility (rapidadaptation to changes in models andvariations in quantities), whileguaranteeing the quality of the finalproduct.

Packaging

This stage in the manufacturing processconsists of finding appropriatepackaging options, taking into accountdesign, protection of products, cost andcompliance with environmentalstandards. Our workshops offer a largerange of services, such as co-packing,overpacking, stretch wrapping,labelling, publication of notices, anti-theft devices, and more.

In line with our pursuit of continuousimprovement, the « production reform » haschanged our production and managementmethods. Canon Bretagne’s expertise is basedon three areas : the chemical products, theprovision of services and the industrialpartnership.

- Through our activity of chemical products,including manufacturing of toner cartridgesand bottles, and recycling of toner cartridges,we show our strong commitment toenvironment.These productions are central to theEuropean market and the manufacturing ofcartridges in a “closed loop” enables us to useas many recycled parts as possible and toregenerate plastic materials.

- The services illustrate our constant concernwith customer satisfaction, going beyondmanufacturing alone.

Inspects parts before reusage

Since 1987, cartridges have been manufactured at Canon Bretagne, on premises with specially controlledatmosphere and lighting conditions. The sensitivity ofthe product requires a strictly controlled environment(temperature, humidity, dust, light). At the same time, Canon Bretagne recycles Canoncartridges collected throughout Europe. Usedcartridges are either disassembled so that the partscan be re-used or ground up for the recycling ofmaterials or energy recovery. Parts that are re-usedare thoroughly cleaned and subjected to a rigorousquality inspection before being placed in newcartridges. Grinding and automatic sorting ofmaterials make it possible to recover metals such assteel and aluminium, and plastic ; parts of these plasticmaterials are re-injected for parts manufactured fornew products.

Since 2011, Canon Bretagne has specialised in theindustrial manufacturing of toner bottles. Thesecartridges are used for the larger copier models.Several models are manufactured with the 4 colours of ink: black, blue, yellow and magenta. This production requires high tech automated and robotised equipments so as to guarantee the quality level expected for a Canon product.

Since 2002, Canon Bretagne has been using itsindustrial know-how in the after-sales serviceby setting up successively a technical callcentre, a repair workshop of office machines(which became a Canon Regional AccreditedService Centre in 2005), a refurbishmentworkshop (to repair products to make them asgood as new), and other remote supportservices for Canon France.

These services are also on offer to businesspartners, and some of them have alreadychosen Canon Bretagne as provider of after-sales services, in addition to the assemblingand logistics services for their products.

Today, the after-sales service employs highlyqualified technicians in technologies as variedas audio, office equipment, photography and

video, among others. From the telemarketingand repair call centres including return logisticsservice, Canon Bretagne offers acomprehensive range of services in its site toensure the best satisfaction of customers.

Telemarketing

Backed by its recognised experience in callcentre management, Canon Bretagne haslaunched telemarketing services to allowsalespersons to focus on their core job.

By delegating to us tedious works (such assending emails, creating new customeraccounts, and making appointments), thesalespersons can devote more time tocustomers.

Refurbishment

Canon Bretagne provides refurbishmentservices for its clients to restore theirproducts according to the requiredspecifications. Then, they are tested andpacked as new products to be shipped tothe clients for resale.

Dismantling

The European directive on "Waste fromElectrical and Electronic Equipment(WEEE)” makes it compulsory to collectand recycle WEEEs. Canon Bretagneperforms WEEE disassembly since 2004according to the regulations in force and by maintaining the policy of "no landfill".

Call and repair centre

The core strength of Canon Bretagne lies inthe versatility of its staff, who rotatebetween the call centre and repairworkshop, thus increasing their skill levels.Assistance of problem resolution by phone,without needing on-site support, allowscustomers to reduce machine downtimeand have their products quickly availableagain to their satisfaction. In case a productmalfunction cannot be remedied by phone,Canon Bretagne will arrange to take theproduct back for repair and send it back tothe customer, or replace it within 24 hours.

The workshop dedicated to after-salesservices can handle more than 300 differentmodels. With e-Maintenance system fornetwork-connected equipment, a problemwill be reported to the operators at the callcentre, which allows to resolve the proglemby phone in most cases without dispatchinga technician for on-site service.
