Thanks for picking our food! AFOP’s Health & Safety Programs VOLUME 2 / ISSUE: MARCH 2014 THANK YOU! As we approach National Farmworker Awareness Week, AFOP’s Health & Safety team would like to stop and stand in solidarity with farmworkers. To the approximately 1.8 million people who spend their days harvesting the crops and raising the livestock Americans consume, we want to say thank you for doing America’s third most dangerous job typically for less than minimum wage. The work of feeding America is vitally important and we are thankful for the sacrifices you make working long hours in harsh conditions. Some farmworkers have paid the ultimate price with their lives so that the rest of us have food to eat. We know there are many challenges you face and abuses that you have suffered. Often times, you are unable to benefit from the fruits of your labor or even the basic privileges of healthcare and paid sick leave that the rest of us frequently take for granted. You deserve better! You deserve improved living and safer working conditions, but most of all you deserve to be treated with dignity and respect. From community to community we support you and will continue to fight with you until your most basic rights are continuously met. Thank you for everything you do for us on a daily basis! VOLUME 2 / ISSUE: MARCH 2014

THANK YOU!

We know there are many challenges you face

and abuses that you have suffered.

On March 28th, 2014 the Cesar Chavez film will be released throughout the country in select theaters. Not only is this a great way to bring National Farmworker Awareness Week to a close, but a wonderful commemoration of Cesar Chavez’ life as we celebrate his birthday at the end of the month. Chavez is a first-generation American born on March 31, 1927 in the North Gila River Valley outside Yuma, Arizona. Throughout his youth and into adulthood, Chavez traveled the migrant streams throughout California laboring in the fields, orchards and vineyards, where he was exposed to the hardships and injustices of farmworker life.

The film documents the birth of a farmworker movement. Cesar Chavez tells the story of the famed civil rights leader and labor organizer and the struggles he faced being a husband and a father trying to raise a family and of his commitment to securing a living wage for farmworkers. Chavez practiced non-violence as he fought greed and prejudice in his fight to bring dignity to farmworkers. More than just a leader for Latinos, the civil rights movement, and the farm labor movement. Cesar Chavez was an inspiration for millions of Americans from many different backgrounds that never worked on a farm or fought for social justice. His remarkable journey is proof that one individual has the power to create tremendous change in the world.

FARMWORKER AWARENESS WEEK: March 24-28

March 24-28 we celebrate the National Farmworker Awareness Week (NFAW)

This is a week of action for communities and its members to bring attention to farmworker issues in our own communities. Farmworker Awareness Week isn’t just about raising awareness about farmworker working conditions but to also shed light on and bring honor to the important contributions farmworkers make to our daily lives.

Many organizations across the country will be hosting or participating in events throughout the week that honor farmworkers. HOW WILL YOU GET INVOLVED?

The Association of Farmworker Opportunity Programs’ Health & Safety Programs will be sponsoring a LONG SLEEVE SHIRT DRIVE in our participating states. If you wish to participate please check the directory on the following page or our website at www.afop.org for further information. JOIN US!

Use #NFAW2014 on Facebook or Twitter

We all can do some good and give back to the farmworker community, what are you waiting for?

Put as much fruit in water as you like, and let the water sit for at least 30 minutes before drinking. TRY MIXING THESE:

Green tea, mint & lime – fat burning, digestion, headaches, congestion and breathe freshener

Strawberry & kiwi – cardiovascular health, immune system protection, and blood sugar regulation, digestion

Cucumber, lime & lemon – water weight management, bloating, appetite control, hydration, digestion

Lemon, lime & orange – digestion, vitamin C, immune defense, and heartburn (drink at room temperature)

.

Healthy Tips! USES FOR HYDROGEN PEROXIDE

Whiten Clothes – An Alternative to Bleach: Add a cup of peroxide to white clothes in your laundry to whiten them.

Toothbrush - Soak your toothbrush in hydrogen peroxide to keep them free of germs

Fruit and Veggie Sanitizer - Use food-grade peroxide to spray down fruits and vegetables. Allow them to sit for a few minutes before you rinse and dry them. The hydrogen peroxide will kill harmful organisms, making your food safe to eat. (Make sure, of course, that you use clean water for the rinse.)
